Architecture On The HillOkay, did I miss one month or two? No excuses, but I did recently run into that “Wizard” fellow on a walk through the neighborhood. He confronted me with sparks streaming from his hat and a sparkle in his eye, and invited me for coffee at the Metropolitan. I must have upset him somehow, as the next thing I remember is waking up on the uppermost ledge of a high-rise, staring at a couple of falcon chicks while their mom pecked me on the head!

Moral of the story – don’t mess with the Wizard, as I lost a month or two in the meantime and am still wearing band-aids on my sorry crown. Anyway, this column about “Architecture on the Hill” does not seem to be going too well. Likely all my fault, but “if no one shows up, do something different!” Therefore, this will be the last of the series and will simply be limited to noting a few examples of the great variety of Federal Hill store and restaurant fronts, including:

1. 1000 Block of South Charles Street: Brothers Sushi, Crystal Moll Gallery, Vanessa’s, Noble’s Bar and Grill, Mark Cottman Gallery, Fat Larry’s, Dolche Vita,

2. 1000 Block of Light Street: Regi’s Bistro, Blue Agave, Grilled Cheese Company, Blue Moon Too, Himalaya Bistro, Thai Yum, 1000 Light Street.

This is a real basketful of both good and better! At least, I believe so. Federal Hill is one of Baltimore’s most charming and walkable neighborhoods. This has to do not only with the historic ambiance and human scale of the buildings, but also with the fact that there are so many places to which one may walk. Destinations with an anticipation of joy upon arrival make Federal Hill the wonderful urban neighborhood it has become. Kudos to all who participate.

Finally, please email photos, suggestions, comments, complaints, threats – whatever you wish – to me at [email protected], or peruse the Facebook page “Federal Hillsider” to post any of the aforementioned. My photos of

the list above will be posted on the Facebook page soon. Have fun with it, and ALWAYS be nice to “The Wizard”!

The Rowhouse Grille by The Wandering Minstrel

This month The Minstrel wanders to The Rowhouse Grille in Federal Hill, located at 1400 Light Street at the intersection of Gittings and Light Street. Owner Patrick Dahlgren has operated the Grille since October 2009, and two years ago he applied for an entertainment license to have live music. Patrick says that once we get past Restaurant Week and the Superbowl he will get back to having live music on the weekends – from 9 pm until midnight and featuring acoustic solo performers and duos. So by the time the February Hillsider comes out, The Rowhouse will be gearing up for some live music. Check their website at therowhousegrille.com for specific dates and performers. Patrick also mentioned that he’s looking forward to the start of the Orioles season because he wants to feature live music on Sunday afternoons starting after the conclusion of the O’s games. He also said that he wants to do it for all Sunday home games and hopefully away games as well.

The Rowheouse offers weekend brunch and a weekday Happy Hour from 4-7 pm, with daily specials. The menu is considered New American and features mussels eight different ways in addition to $1 oysters. Mussel Monday offers mussels and beer specials, Tuesday is half-price wine night, Wednesday is $8 burger night, and Thursday is mac and cheese night. The restaurant uses fresh meats and fish, and has a second floor bar and a thirty-seat dining room.

It is refreshing to see places in the neighborhood within walking distance for many of us that are willing to support live music and feature both old and new favorite foods on the menu.

Ditch the Deprivation in 2017

Today we’re going to talk about one very pervasive attitude that people have surrounding food and diet, and how that attitude is making success very difficult. As a fitness coach, when it comes to movement, we have the luxury of being able to give real-time corrections for clients working out with us in the gym. Diet, however, is another story; we are almost never there for our clients meals, so we need to give them the tools to have success on their own without real-time corrections. One of the most powerful tools we can give them is to change this one pervasive attitude.

The holiday season was a whirlwind of stress, parties, and lunchroom cookies, and the new year is a prime time to get re-focused on self improvement. Our current clients received guidance on how to manage the holidays and don’t have to play catch-up. New clients, on the other hand, are feeling the full effects of the holiday hangover, and often want to talk about diet right off the bat. As a coach, this is a great thing to hear, since we are keenly aware of how the diet can either accelerate or completely derail fitness improvements. However, their enthusiasm is often accompanied by an undercurrent of self-doubt as they wonder how they’ll manage. These sorts of questions swirl in their brain…

“Will I have the willpower to stick with this new diet, and be hungry all the time?”

“How will I be able to stay away from the foods I love?”

...and so on.

The pervasive attitude is that a successful diet is a result of deprivation, and this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Let me say again: a successful diet is NOT based on deprivation.

When we sit down with clients to talk about diet, we have them review what they’ve been eating prior to working with us. In working with hundreds of clients, it’s far more apparent to us what their diet is lacking than what there is too much of. Often, their diet is lacking fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as good sources of protein. Our guidance is often to eat more, but eat more of the right things.

Not convinced? A 2014 study by the University of Illinois sought to determine whether disabled adults had worse nutrition than the average adult (“Nutrient intake among US adults with disabilities”). What they found was, yes, disabled adults had slightly worse nutrient intake, which was not too surprising. However, what was surprising was the incredibly low bar set by the “normal” adults, who were lacking in a whole host of nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. That’s right, people who think they are eating too much are not actually getting enough nutrition!

So, although we feel that diet is highly individual, there is one thing that’s for certain: it’s far more productive to think about what you should be adding to your diet than what you should be subtracting. Add nutrient-rich, fresh and unprocessed fruits, vegetables and protein to your diet. Cook it yourself, and eat until you’re full. If you do this on a consistent basis you’ll be far less likely to take a trip to the vending machine, and you’ll find yourself miraculously eating less of those things you know you shouldn’t, all without ever feeling deprived.

Go Green To Cure Those Winter Blues Ah, February. A month filled with love songs, chocolates, and cold, dark, dreary days. Whoever decided to celebrate love and gallantry during an endlessly depressing month of cold, wet conditions must have known we’d be all-to-willing to snuggle up (or should we say, hunker down?) in hopes the bright colors and full foliage of spring will soon arrive. Luckily, we aren’t solely married to the weather when it comes to maintaining healthy, happy houseplants year round. Here are a few of our low light, low maintenance varieties available at Federal Hill Ace.

Airplants: Love is in the air, which is where you’ll find these plants in the wild! Air plants are epiphytes, using a series of modified leaves to absorb water and nutrients from the air as opposed to soil. Native to tropical forests, airplants prefer a fairly humid environment, which is the one thing you can be sure you won’t find during a Northeast winter. Luckily, taking care of these plants is as simple as a spritz of water every few days, and a dip in a water bath every so often as needed. A sunny window is appreciated, but they’ll thrive practically anywhere with natural light.

Houseplants: There are endless varieties to choose from when it comes to houseplants, but its light you’ll have to consider when selecting the best plant for your home. Refer to this chart, or ask an Ace associate for help before purchasing a plant.

The Mechanic’s Bell by Joseph Wehberg

South Baltimore has always been an area of change. Buildings and streets have come and gone with the growth of industry and the construction of houses needed for the workers who labored in the shipyards and factories of the area.

Thanks to a few manuscripts and memoirs that have survived the passage of time, we are able to glimpse the past through the eyes of those who actually lived through those times.

For the immigrant workers who labored in this area, life was hard and pay was low. Most could not afford anything more than the bare essentials. Something as simple as a timepiece, a clock or watch, was considered a luxury and few of the people in this class owned one. About 1850, in order to standardize and communicate to the workers the work day schedule, a high tower, large at the bottom and tapering toward the top, was erected at on the east side of Covington Street near the foot of Grindall Street.

A large bell was acquired from the Clampitt & Regester Foundry at 53 Holiday street, near the City Hall. On this tower was placed the bell, which became known as the “Mechanic’s Bell”. The bell was

rung four times on each of the week’s six working days: Seven A.M. for the workman to start, at twelve noon for dinner and at six P.M. for them to stop work.

Contemporary historical accounts state that the cost of this service was borne cooperatively by the master-shipbuilders, who paid the bell-ringer $200.00 annually. It has been speculated that the ringing was probably done by the wife of the paid bell-ringer, while the husband was more gainfully employed at one of the shipyards.

While the service may have initially begun as a cost borne cooperatively, an 1872 Report of the Baltimore City Register and Commissioners of Finance show an allocation of $100.00 for the cost of a bell-ringer on Federal Hill. It also reported that it provided an equal payment for bell ringing at foot of Caroline Street, across the harbor. This report proves that the position of bell-ringer was, as of that date, a civil job and not paid for with private funds.

An 1883 Ordinance of the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore shows that the expenditure for bell-ringer at Federal Hill was $100.00 per year in 1882 and that an additional $100.00 was budgeted for the position in 1883.

“A short distance from the belfry was a wooden stairway that reached from the top the hill to the road that was on level with the shipyards; which enabled the workmen to go down direct to their work instead of having to walk the distance around the hill. Close by the stairway was a small cottage, occupied by a Mr. McCutcheon and his family. Mr. McCutcheon’s occupation was painting figureheads on the ships and their names on the sterns.”

This first belfry was eventually torn down and was replaced by a similar tower built further south at the foot of Cross Street. It is believed that this last tower was still in operation into the early twentieth century.

William J. Kelly, a lifelong South Baltimorean and local historian, tracked down the Mechanic’s Bell and found that the bell had come into the possession of a Mr. Peter Fritz, who kept a bar at the corner of Riverside and West St. Mr. Fritz, a parishioner of Holy Cross Church, donated the bell to the church cemetery where it stayed until 1987 when it was then donated to the Baltimore Museum of Industry, where it can now be seen on display.

My adoption fee is $150 and includes all of my routine vetting, rabies and distemper/parvo vaccinations, deworming, spay/neuter surgery, heartworm testing, monthly heartworm prevention, microchip, boarding and transportation costs if applicable, along with an offer for 30 days of free 24PetWatch pet insurance.

QUEENIE:Just like my name, I like to be the queen of my domain. I spend my day sunning on my foster mom’s screened-in porch, and I prefer to reign over a house with my own kind—cats over dogs, please (though I’ll tolerate them if they leave Her Highness be). I love food, just like Henry VIII, and I’ll try to get up on counters to steal it, but I can be taught that’s not proper royal etiquette. I raised a few princes and princesses myself, and now I’m ready for my very own castle. If you’d like to take me home, please fill out an adoption application at this website - http://www.animalalliesrescue.org/adoption-application and choose me - Queenie!

If Not Jewelry, Then What?By: Chandra Koy, Phina’s Fine Linens & Gifts

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Baltimoreans are bound to be scrambling for the perfect gift for that special someone. Don’t worry! If gift-giving ranks high on your stress-o-meter and you think jewelry is a little too far of a stretch, we’ve got you covered.

If you’ve landed a first date with someone you just recently met, congratulations! Nothing is more exciting than new-found romance in the air. When going out for the first time, try not to go overboard with gifts, as you probably don’t know your date well enough to pick out something personal. Here are some suggestions:

• A wonderful bottle of good champagne from Federal Hill Wine & Spirits or Smitty’s Wine & Spirits may do the trick to set off the date.

• You also can’t go wrong with a box of delicious gourmet covered strawberries from Berries By Quicha, a business new to the Federal Hill neighborhood. This unique box of chocolates will leave your date wanting more.

• If your special someone prefers something other than chocolates, stop by Punch, where you’ll find a cute box of champagne-flavored gummy bears. (Don’t worry, these bears don’t contain alcohol!)

• If edibles won’t do, make a trip to Phina’s Fine Linens & Gifts for a vibrant silk scarf hand-painted by Denise D’Aoust (a local artist), or consider an exquisite silk robe or a message of love on a

pillowcase. Any one of these would leave your date with the impression that you put a lot of thought into her gift.

• Sweet-scented candles are also a good way to show your special someone that there’s a spark going on between the two of you. These can be found in several boutiques on Federal Hill’s main streets.

• If you’re planning a date with your wife, chances are you’ve already “wowed” her. To get back into the romantic groove plan a couples spa date to create a little time to destress as a couple. Nothing says relaxation better than a spa experience,

• With a family, sometimes things can get a little hectic in the kitchen at dinnertime. If your special someone is a diehard foodie show them you appreciate their cooking skills by giving a fun cooking class at Schola with Chef Jerry Pellegrino.

Treat your Special Someone for Valentines Day

• A perfect way to get your kids involved with Valentine’s Day fun is to take them to Scraps where they can create hand-made Valentine’s Day cards and crafts for their mothers, grandmothers, aunts and uncles! Their special gift of creativity will be cherished by their loved ones for years to come and make you the hero of the day.

• To top off the gift, add a thoughtful card. Brightside Boutique has plenty of cards that will leave your significant other filled with warmth.

Sure, jewelry can make a person feel special, but there are lots of other lovely gift options your sweetie may

appreciate just as much. No matter what you get your first date or significant other, it’s sure to be appreciated. After all it’s the thought that counts – don’t stress too much about it. Happy Valentine’s Day and amour to all!

Hidden Gems by Peggi Powell

There are many “gems” in our Federal Hill area that are sometimes hidden from the casual glance. This column will highlight some of these “Hidden Gems” so that you can plan future excursions.

THE VISITORS CENTER:Located in the heart of the Inner Harbor, this beautiful 7,000 square foot building is filled with information about things to see and do in Baltimore. There are individuals in the building who act as tour guides to help direct people to the many attractions available to the visitor. You probably have seen them around town in their red, white and blue star-spangled shirts (these are available for sale at the Gift Shop in the Visitors Center).

This is a great place to bring out-of-town guests to get them started. There is an 8 ½ minute free movie about Baltimore that will get people excited about all there is to enjoy in our city. It can also act as a refresher course for those of us who live here to remind us of what a fabulous city we live in.

There is also a Gift Shop at the Visitors Center. Here, you can purchase souvenirs at reasonable prices, such as the usual keychains, shotglasses and coffee mugs. Also, the start-spangled polo shirt that our “tour guides” wear. Postcards are available along with Baltimore-themed accessories. You can find lots of great gifts for remembrances from Baltimore.

There is also a CPU located in the Visitor Center. For those of you not familiar with the term, it stands for a Contract Postal Unit – in other words, a Post Office. You can buy stamps and mail packages. It is open now Tuesday through Sunday, and beginning in March, it will be open 7 days a week.

The 14th Annual MammoJam Music Festival will take place on Saturday, March 4th at the 8x10 in Federal Hill featuring Mid-Atlantic blues and funk act Spirit Parade with Ursula Ricks a return engagement with Baltimore’s Brooks Long and the Mad Dog No Good, coming off their 2016 hit "Got Soul". Otterbein neighbor Russ Causey and his band Roses and Rust will join the festival fresh of off their appearance at the Federal Hill Chilli Cook-off. Local artists 33 West will be making their MammoJam debut

MammoJam is an all volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to supporting breast cancer awareness, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment programs for uninsured and low income women through live music and artistic performances. Since 2004, supporters have come to top local venues like Federal Hill's 8x10 to enjoy outstanding local and national bands, talented artists, and food provided by some of Baltimore's best restaurants.

“What’s makes our event so much fun is the way our neighbors and the local businesses come together with our bands to celebrate the those touched by breast cancer,” said MammoJam founder and Federal Hill resident Bill Romani.

MammoJam was created in October, 2003 to celebrate the courage of breast cancer survivors and the compassion of friends and family members who are all personally touched by the impact that the disease has on their loved ones.

MammoJam is proud to be working with great organizations like the Hoffberger Breast Center at Mercy Medical Center and the Breast and Cervical Cancer Center at Harbor Hospital to provide diagnostic and treatment services for uninsured and homeless women in the Baltimore area. Since 2009, MammoJam has funded a Translator at Harbor Hospital who helps arrange screenings and reviews test results for. In 2016 over 400 women were served through this MammoJam funded program. “Advance” tickets are $45 and can be purchased through at www.mammojam.org.

The Wizard and LegerdemainBy John Ginovsky

It had been a while since I saw my neighbor, the inestimable Wizard Awry, and that concerned me. I had become used to his banging on my door with his exasperated exclamations about one or another outlandish event, issue, or whatever.

But no. It had been more than a month since I had seen him. Here it was January and I feared that the onset of the new year with its dreary weather and the stumblings reported in the daily news may have sent him into some sort of unimaginable wizardly depression. I admit, selfishly, since I lived right next to him, that any potential wizardly reaction could cause me property damage.

So, toward the end of the month, I took the initiative. A six pack of imported beer under my arm, I knocked on his door, intending to extend a neighborly shoulder on which he could find solace.

Wow. The door opened and there was the Wizard Awry, smiling broadly, with a little kitten, all cute and big-eyed, in the crook of his arm.

“Do come in!” he boomed, so I did.

First, though, some background to explain why I was so astounded at this point. For years it was common knowledge in the neighborhood that the Wizard Awry had a special understanding of, and influence over, dogs. The wizard was certainly not a dog sitter and not really a dog whisperer. He was more of a dog consultant, meaning, he consulted with the dog directly, not with its owner. After a session with him, for example, the dog would know to deliver its poop directly into a bag and trot it over to the nearest trash bin.

But cats, never. I had asked him about that, years ago.

“Cats? No. I remember, back with Pharoah, I mean, in Egypt, they are, or were, considered gods, so they have always been out of my league. And then there was the time of the witches—Let’s just say, cats and I have always kept a professional distance from each other.”

I was speechless, then, as I stepped inside, barely noticing him deftly relieving me of my beer.

“I suppose I should introduce you to my new friend,” he said. “This is Legerdemain. Or Leggy, for short.”

Legerdemain mewed a little kitten mew and started to purr.

“Isn’t he fantastic!” cried the wizard even as he opened two beer bottles. It took me a bit to respond.

“He certainly is something,” I said. The wizard took note of my hesitation.

Sometimes you need someone who represents you and only you. Buying a home is one of

those times.

A Celebration of The Best of Federal Hill

Dress to Impress

LIVE MUSIC!

“Let no one accuse me of living entirely in the past. I do know how to access the internet,” he said, in an apparent non sequitor.

“Do you realize that there are cats that can play the piano? It’s true! I saw videos of them! Also cats that can curl up in boots! So cute! And cats that can sleep on a dog’s back! And cats that can cling to a basketball and roll around endlessly on a kitchen floor…Ho Ho Ho! It astounds me every time I think about that!”

“Uh, yeah,” I said as he opened two more beers.

“Well, one day last month I was looking out my front window and for the first time I noticed all the cats wandering around the street. Now, I understand these are not stray cats, nor feral cats, but actual pets that neighbors let out so they can do their cat things. I even knew some of these cats. There was Jeremiah from down the street, and Booties from the lady who lives behind us, and Mr. Whiskers from the veterinarian’s office…”

“Yes, I know these as well,” I said.

“Anyway, as I watched, Goo Goo, the tabby from the other neighbor lady, darted to the curb and came back with a mouse in its jaws.”

“No!”

“Yes! Well, you know I’ve never been warm to cats, but right then I thought I might reconsider.”

Light dawned. “You don’t have mouse problem here do you?”

He waved his hand. “Of course not. In fact, I really don’t dislike mice at all.”

He considered my very confused face. Two more bottles popped open.

“I went to the rescue center, filled out all the forms, paid the fees, checked things out with the vet, and now here’s my little Leggy…Now where did he go?”

Just then we heard a tune from the piano down the hall: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

“Heh, heh,” chuckled the wizard. “You must excuse him. Leggy’s just starting to learn.”

With that, I no longer had property damage fears.
