Report Number 4, and still counting……
Hi All, I promise, just a quick report this time. Honest!
So here we are in a new year and I’m wondering what presidential words of wisdom I can offer.
Yep, I’ve got nothing. Perhaps don’t drive your car over a gully and nearly fall in. “Safety in
numbers”, a valid quote from the last newsletter. OK, I hope that everyone’s festive season went
well and it is again time for a new year of Subie 4WD fun.
So what have we got planned for this year. Firstly, the committee is down a Social Director as
Luke decided to resign due to the impending birth of the bub in a few weeks. I would like to pass
on the committee’s thanks for his efforts to date and he and Cherie made a great start propagating
a calendar for this year. The committee will be asking for a volunteer at the upcoming Club
Meeting on the 28th January. And whilst I remember, best of luck to Cherie and Luke with their
upcoming birthing fun.
In the absence of a Social Director, Dave Martin and Yarney have continued with the calendar in
the interim and all trips will be listed through the Editors and on the web site. The bigger club
events such as the Club Birthday Party & Detailing Day and the Xmas Weekend Camping Trip are
close to being finalised and we will also be holding a new event at the end of the year. It will be the
Calendar & BBQ Night and will be run just before Xmas similarly to the impromptu one held last
year. We had a great turnout for the night and it was enjoyed by all (especially Grant). And the
calendars are GREAT too, thanks M&M.
The Australia day weekend trip is set for 26th to 28th January at Booloumba Creek. Cherie and
Luke have pre-booked an area and still have 4 vacancies, i.e. 4 people. Please call them if you
want a camp site. If you cannot make it for the whole weekend, there are a few members intending
to drive there for the Sunday and join up with the campers for a trip around the local area. Those
attending the Sunday drive will need to make their own travel arrangements to Booloumba Creek
and be there for a 9am trip departure.
The 25th February club meeting will be a Special Meeting and our Treasurer will be delivering his
Financial Projection Report. In a twist of fate, the committee has also decided to spend some coin
and provide a free BBQ (scandalous, isn’t it!), enabled through the savings made via the electronic
Newsletter. The free BBQ will start at 6pm but the drinks will be the normal price and pay as you
go. The actual meeting will take place as per normal at 8pm.
An Easter trip is being planned for Jondaryan Woolshed with tentative bookings being confirmed
this week. The dates will be 29th March to 1st April and details will be sent out once finalised.
So, that is it for now and I hope to see you at the upcoming events.

Welcome to a busy trip year, thanks to Luke who kicked things off with a trip calendar, there will be plenty
to do. First off is the Oz day long weekend trip to Booloumba Creek, we have some great creek side camp
sites booked. Going into February we have 2 day trips, kindly run by Jan K the harder Glasshouse
Mountains and the easy southern Border Track and Rabbit Fence trip. Also about mid month we have the
new Gen 4 Forester preview night at Subaru Qld HQ Murarrie. At the special Club finance review general
meeting in February we will be having a free sausage sizzle. This sizzle has been changed from the
January GM.
Looking further ahead to March we have the National 4X4 show and Pub dinner and this year's Easter trip
will be the Jondaryan Woolshed. So there is no reason to stay home, get out and about and enjoy our great
outdoors.

For Big John McKenna in his Rodeo and myself in the Brumby, we set off on Friday afternoon for Gallangowan,
with the aim to arrive before a sit down pre paid roast dinner that had been planned for the crews and helpers.
First I had to collect David Bargen from the airport, he was on his way between Wagga Wagga and home. He
was stopping off for the weekend to help out at the rally. Also, I had a load of four new tyres for Keith Peter's
wide load Colorado pilot vehicle, who we would meet up with at Gallangowan. Once on the road we encountered
a fair bit of Friday afternoon traffic, we eventually made it to the BP travel centre and meet up with Big John.
We had a good run for the rest of the trip, we all thought the 30 odd kms of dirt from Jimna was in good
condition, the best we can remember. We soon made it to Gallangowan and found our camp site that John and
Val Conniff had reserved for us all. They arrived on Thursday and had helped out with the practice and prologue
on Friday. Big John set up his Tray On, David his tent and Keith his super quick alloy tray back camper. Then it
was off to dinner and finally bed for some rest for a big rally day ahead. Also at the dinner the rally's starting
order was drawn out of a hat.
After a mild night we were up bright and early, one of the first of our crew to arrive was Dwayne Boyton in his
diesel Surf, more soon followed with Rob Moulton and Debbie in his work 4X2 Hilux, still with a load of ladders
on the roof rack, and Paul Ashton in his 00 auto Forester. Paul has recently rejoined after a 15 year break, when
he owned a mighty dual range MY Touring Wagon.
Gallangowan 2012 was a new concept for what we have become used to. We were told it was how the early
rally’s were run in the good old days. It was to be timed under old simpler A to B system, simpler maybe for the
scorers, it took a bit of getting used to out in the field. For the crews it was also a very different event where, they
worked down from the top 20 fastest times to 15 then 10, 5 and the final 2 to find the outright winner on a shoot
out stage. First off they would do 6 short loop stages around the 5 to 6 km mark all close to the oval. The first 3
passes were in one direction and the final 3 were in the other direction. We were all going to stay at the same
controls for the day, we just changed jobs. The final shoot out stage was to be pace noted.
After the briefing we were soon off to our stage where Dwayne, Big John and myself did the time control, Rob
and Debbie did the start control, John and Val did the stop, David and Paul did the flying finish. With the change
of direction it would give everybody a chance to have a go at different jobs that we don't normally do. Once
under way everything worked out well, we had a bit of a bank up of cars at the time control on the first run. John
and Val were kept very busy at the stop doing the times. As the stages were run, I think HQ streamed lined the
system a bit and did more of the stage time figures themselves. On one of the reverse runs we had one WRX
limp through with a broken left hand rear strut, his rally was over. Also we had a few flat tyres.
For a big change we were all back at the oval all packed up and sorted around 5.30ish. It gave us a chance to
speculate on the final shoot stage that finished right at the oval. The cars come down the fast downhill to the
flying finish and stop. It was a good when it got dark as you could see the brake discs glowing red and the
flashing exhaust flames.
It was another big team effort, we all got the job done, thank you to everyone who helped out.

Dave Martin, Dave Bargen and Big John were camped out at Gallangowan from the rally event the day before
and it was only Phil and myself who did the drive up for the day run with both of our journeys beginning just after
dawn for the run up to the meeting point. We both arrived within minutes of each other to find the others almost
finished packing up.
After a bit of a brief, it was in the cars and off we went. Phil had organised with a friend to cross into his property
and do some of the many tracks in the property including the site of a plane crash, his Father’s resting place and
some nice testing downhill runs leading to a lunch stop on a flowing creek. With a stop for lunch done and Dave
Martin’s worms happy we were off again heading north east-ish and off the property,
As the temperature started it’s climb well into the thirties we arrived in Amamoor Forest and headed into some of
the areas done on a previous trip that need more investigation, it was heading the way that John left us to head
home. We did a nice loop track in the heavy undergrowth that was much fun indeed and then onto a recent
harvest area with a myriad of tracks weaving through it. After doing a few loops it was decided to head for home
although the way back kept getting further away as previous tracks had ceased to exist since the last trip this
way, lucky for us we met up with a forestry officer who pointed us in the right direction and we were on our way.
Heading into Amamoor for a drink and end of trip ice-cream and also to re attach Dave’s mudflap on his brumby,
we headed down the Bruce Highway and towards Brisbane. The trip back soon got down to a crawl for a good
few kilometres as a result of Queensland’s high quality highway system. Soon enough it was time for my turn off
and I headed home having done just over 400kms since leaving home early that morning

We met up at Hungry Jacks Beaudesert at 8.30. Five vehicles all up. Namely Jan in his GT Forester, Dave M in his Brumby, Mick and Marion in their 99 Forester, Paul in his Forester and Bob in his “Subacat” aka Pajero. With satisfied tummies we headed out through Rathdowney and down to Urbenville. A couple of vehicles went for a fuel top up then we maintained a southerly direction for maybe 19km before turning right to dirt. Yum. The Tooloom Forestry area is huge with heaps of tracks, hill climbs, creek crossings with steep entry/exits with lots of pretty countryside. No one lives in here except the mountain cattle. There were patches of lantana so we put Bob's ''sharp" machete to work and were delighted to see how easily and quickly the lantana was trimmed back, it made all the difference. Later in the day we found a rather steep, long hill. Paul and Bob skidded their way down to trim some lantana and what a steep climb it was to walk back up. Paul chose to sit this challenge out so four vehicles slowly descended for fear of a slide away but the return up hill was done in attack mode and most enjoyable.
We were surprised there was no sighting of kangaroo/wallaby or snake (yippee) but thousands of Cicadas making a LOT of NOISE in the afternoon. Apparently this time of year is peak season for them. You know they start life underground then hang out in the trees? We also heard the much preferable sound of the elusive Bellbird aplenty. This whole area is mostly tree plantation, growing straight up like long shafts of wood. It was a pleasant day with cloud cover to keep the sting of the summer sun away and cooling sea breezes too. About 4 pm Paul had to leave the party for the drive back to Brisvegas for work. What a champ to do all that driving in one day. The remaining four vehicles ventured up the mountain to make camp for the night. A sensational spot, with 360 deg views. This no name mountain is now affectionately named Subaru Mountain! It stands at 687 metres so was fresh breezy and the night revealed a clear starry night...just perfect. Out came the track pants and jacket ...... in summer! Jan has some smart technology and could name the stars and even told us the (ISS) International Space Station was due to pass over us at 8.06 pm. We were watching intently and saw many high altitude aircraft and then right on time there it was, lights a blazing and easy to see. Jan thought it travelled at 27,000 kph. I wanted to know more, so looked it up at home and include some data, from Google, so you know it's true??? This ISS is the 9th inhabitated space station with five participating space agencies. It has been continuously occupied for the last 12+ years conducting research and experiments. It maintains an altitude between 330 km to 410 km above the earth and orbits 15.7 times per day! Average speed is 27,743.8 kph. It's 72.8 m long and weighs approx 450,000kg and is funded to 2020. Interesting eh?
So after a lovely cool sleep we awoke to a thick swirling fog all around us. How good is this? We enjoyed a lazy brekkie then packed down to light the fires in our 4bys and took to the tracks again. Different hills and creeks, presenting their own challenge. Mick then Bob got diagonally opposing wheels spinning water all over in one creek. Some extra rocks under the wheels had them away. Marion also did a stint at the wheel. Dave's worms were on duty again ensuring we did not miss a feed. Kinda handy that, or you could miss a feed when you’re having so much fun. We were regularly being watched by herds of mountain cattle amongst the trees. Wait a minute, this time we came to the hill of hills. As we climbed the approach it became evident just how steeep it was so we stopped, but Jan was not put off. Two cracks at it got him hopping and spinning to the top with a radio call saying, "I think I broke an engine mounting". Bob chickened out and found a place to turn around. But wait, Mick is turning around too. Now here's the mystery to ponder. During the Vic Hi Country trip Mick’s Forester climbed Mt BBQ at 1500.5 m (.5m for the steel bbq) near Mt Hotham when no one else would do it. So why was he turning back from this hill? Anyway, Dave (I'll have a go) went on and up that hill in style. It was amazing to watch these two guys.
And so 3pm rolled around and we made a move to return to civi duties and headed out of this vast playground. So ended another successful adventure with the Subaru 4WD Club of QLD, safe in the hands of Jan and Dave M. Thanks guys.
