Welcome to the February issue of the Carryduff Focus

There are lots of reasons why people may be feeling a squeeze on their finances at present. Whatever they are, I’m sure we could all do with a bit of advice to help us save money. I’ve a great article on this topic on page 20 - I’m sure you’ve heard some of the advice before, but there may be a few new nuggets in there too.

When I saw the gardening article this month was about growing your own potatoes, I really wanted to include it (page 30). We’ve been growing our own earlies for quite a few years (well, I say we, but what I really mean is my husband does all the hard work and I ‘help’ with the harvesting which is the really fun bit). They don't last long, just a few weeks (we don't grow loads), but they really taste amazing. Even if you have very little room, I would recommend growing some, for the superb flavour and the sheer satisfaction! If you’re not sure which potato varieties to buy, you usually can’t go wrong with any varieties that are stocked locally - we’ve found they’re usually right for heavy County Down clay soils. We’ll be out buying our seed potatoes this month, to be planted in March and harvested in July. Looking forward to it already! I’ll let you know how we get on...

Until next time... Deirdre

Moneyreagh Community Centre Lough Moss Centre, Carryduff 9:30am til 12:00pm 9:30am til 12:00pm 1st & 3rd Thursday of every month 2nd & 4th Thursday of every month

Castlereagh Borough Council has secured an additional £5,000 for advice services which has enabled Advice NI to provide additional face to face services in Moneyreagh and Carryduff.

The additional outreach services operate in Moneyreagh Community Centre and Lough Moss Centre, Carryduff. The service is available in Moneyreagh every 1st and 3rd Thursday morning of each month, and in the Lough Moss Centre every 2nd and 4th Thursday morning of each month.

Advice NI provides a comprehensive service on subjects including social security benefits (including tribunal representation), money & debt, consumer issues, employment and administration of justice.

Advice NI provides face to face service advice services locally deployed to service the Castlereagh outreach venues. Appeal tribunal representation services and dedicated money advice services are in place, a dedicated Freephone line has been established and an email advice facility is also in place.

Bob Stronge, Advice NI Chief Executive said: “Council recognise the increasing difficulties facing many families in terms of welfare reform, increased unemployment, the rising cost of living and the uncertain financial climate. We know that advice services can be a lifeline for people struggling to cope and for this reason more resources have been made available to Advice NI in order that greater access to advice can be provided to people across the Borough.

“Advice NI’s mission is to develop an independent advice sector that provides the best possible advice to those who need it most. We now have a proven track record in providing excellent advice services across the Borough and we acknowledge Council’s efforts to increase access to advice services at this time. The additional funding will enable Advice NI to make advice services available on a fortnightly basis for the people of Moneyreagh and Carryduff.”

Focus on Movies

By Peter Stevenson

AT THE CINEMA: Les Miserables 12A, (158 mins) Movie musicals have been hit-and-miss over the last ten years, and whether good or otherwise, they are huge box office draws. So the bigwigs in Hollywood decided that now was the time to cash in on an adaptation of long-running musical Les Misérables. Adapted into the movie medium twice in the late ’90s (not as a musical), these productions were more interested in Victor Hugo’s depressing tale of post-revolutionary Paris. This is a full-blown, unadulterated and unapologetic version of the perennially fresh (despite being grim and decidedly bleak) West End musical. Big name actors playing lead roles in musicals is a dangerous gambit (who could forget Richard Gere in Chicago?), but sometimes they get it right. Hugh Jackman takes on the principal role of Jean Valjean and performs admirably. His voice is emotive and strong but it waivers slightly as he reaches the big notes and his performance of the notoriously difficult ‘Bring Him Home’ just doesn’t quite cut the mustard. Russell Crowe’s Javert is adequate. His vocal range and mannerisms are sufficient as Valjean’s eternal pursuer, but never does he excel. Javert is portrayed as an irritation to Valjean, not the morally upright and perpetual seeker of justice he should be. The surprise performance comes from Anne Hathaway as the tragic Fantine. Her time on screen is only about half an hour but is transcendently powerful. Her solo ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ (a.k.a. that Susan Boyle song) is sublime; revealing a voice we did not know existed. Director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) deals in extremes; from the big opening scene launching huge ships into the sea, to the claustrophobic ‘Parisian’ sets. His bravest move however, is to have the cast sing live on set; a bold and daring move which doesn’t always pay off, but sets this movie apart from its rivals. 4 / 5

On DVD: The Campaign 15 (85 mins) Will Ferrell can be one of the funniest comedians in Hollywood. As proof, I would recommend Anchorman: the Legend of Ron Burgundy or his wonderful performance singing ‘Haben Sie gehört das Deutsche band?’ in Mel Brooks’ 2005’s remake of his farce The Producers. It all depends who Ferrell teams up with. In this case, he works with director Jay Roach, the man behind the hugely successful Meet the Parents. How could it fail? The first thing to understand about this movie is that is approximately 30% satire and 70% comedy. Long-time Congressman Cam Brady (Ferrell) is involved in a scandal so business men The Motch Brothers (Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow) spy a way to insert their own corporate shill/patsy into Congress: Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), facilitating their shady business deals.

This is as complicated as the plot gets; the remainder of the film focuses on the dirty tricks campaigns of each candidate. Each political trick used seems exaggerated; hyperbolic even, but is scarily close to the truth and Roach squeezes all possible comic value from each preposterous idea. Ferrell and Galifianakis work well together, allowing each other enough room to be truly funny while remaining a close enough acting team to prevent the other stealing the show. A special word must be given to Dylan McDermott who shines as Marty’s oily, amoral campaign manager. The biggest disappointment though, is the lacklustre ending; jokes and parody end, and predictable sentimentality is ushered in. Had this been avoided, this movie could have been much better. 3 / 5

There’s no better way to create a fresh look than with a change to your hair colour. A new hue can take years off your age, emphasise your best features and leave your complexion looking radiant.

It’s crucial to think carefully before doing anything drastic or making a hasty change though, because if you pick the wrong colour you can be left with an unflattering and disappointing result.

Here’s our guide to what to consider before you reach for the hair dye.

Start with your Skin Tone Whether you fancy being a blonde, brunette or redhead, it’s important to identify whether your natural complexion is warm or cool. This determines what colour base you should look for when you pick your shade.

To find out which category you fall into, try this simple test:

Stand in front of a mirror in natural light with no make-up on. Hold a white garment by your face, then do the same with a cream coloured one. Decide which looks better with your colouring, does the white enhance your eyes and skin? If so, you’re cool. If the cream looks best, then you’re warm.

Consider your jewellery; does gold suit you better than silver? If so, your skin tone is warm. If silver looks stunning, then you’re cool.

Cool Colours If your skin colouring is cool, you should choose an ash, mink or even platinum blonde shade if you fancy a blonde hue.

Brunette colours with an ashy base work best with cool skins. Think coffee coloured browns, medium brown with ashy highlights or even black.

Stick to burgundy, mahogany and purple based reds - they will look fabulous with your skin.

Warm Colours If you have warm colouring, then you’ll look great with golden blonde colours and caramel highlights.

For brunettes, choose chestnut or golden browns with warm tones for a stunning look.

If you fancy standing out from the crowd with vibrant red locks, go for copper and auburn shades. Any red with a golden or orange base colour works well.

Have a Good Hair Day We’ve all had our fair share of hair disasters over the years and one of the main causes is changing our hair

colour at home.

If you plan on going more than two shades lighter or darker than your natural hair colour, then it really is essential that you visit a salon to have your hair done professionally.

Remember that many colours bought for home use won’t necessarily look the same on your hair as they do on the box. If you have been dying your hair a dark shade for a long time there may be a build-up of colour on the lengths that could leave you with uneven results.

Blonde hues are very fashionable at the moment but lightening dark hair can be damaging. Invest in a good conditioner and have a toner standing by in case your at-home highlights turn out looking brassy.

Red hair colours are great but they have a tendency to fade quickly, so be prepared to find the time and money to regularly spend on your colour.

St Joseph’s Primary School The children in Primary One enjoyed making fruit smoothies as part of their ‘Me’ topic. They helped chop up lots of bananas and strawberries and then added some orange juice. The best bit was blending them all together. Our smoothies tasted delicious. Mr Donnelly & Miss Maginn really enjoyed them too!

Ryan O’Neill P5FM entered a Christmas card competition at the Armagh Planetarium. He won a family day out for his brothers and sister. Well done Ryan!

P6 visited the War Memorial Museum on Fri 14th Dec and had a very informative visit which began with a Power Point presentation about life in WW2. The children then perused a range of different artefacts and got dressed up in WW2 uniforms. Before returning home they heard stories from Bob Wright, a veteran of WW2 who is now 90 years old.

Fundraiser of the Year Award The Mayor of Castlereagh, Alderman Michael Henderson, recently presented a local fundraiser, William Steenson, with the Infertility Network UK’s ‘Fundraiser of the year Award 2012’ at a ceremony in Moneyreagh Community Centre.

Mr Steenson, a member of the charity’s More to Life branch in Northern Ireland, has raised a mammoth £10,000 in 5 years with his collecting tin outside shops, supermarkets and football stadiums.

He has faced all weathers - rain, snow, fog – and sometimes even the sun – to support More to Life, which offers help and support to the involuntarily childless in Northern Ireland and across the UK.

Mr Steenson was unanimously voted the 2012 Fundraiser of the Year by the charity.

More to Life embraces all of those who are involuntarily childless irrespective of whether they are people who have moved on from treatment, have never had treatment or are perhaps in a relationship where their partner does not want children. We recognise that individuals and couples need to grieve, and we offer them support to help them to do so and to adjust to this new time in their lives. Our main goal is to help our members to move on and to find a new way of life that is joyful and satisfying.

Statement from Mayor of Castlereagh Alderman Michael Henderson MBE re Closure of Ulster Bank, Carryduff

"I was extremely disappointed to learn of the closure of the Ulster Bank in Carryduff. The branch has provided a valuable service to people in the area and now leaves the town without any banks, following the recent closure of the Northern Bank. My thoughts are with the staff who have worked diligently to provide an excellent service to the local community and are now faced with an uncertain future."

Millennium Primary School Over the past few months some of our KS2 boys have been designing and building their own Go-Karts. They boys began with creating the design. Bernard Mullen from Bernard Mullen Joinery came to school and helped the boys cut their design out of wood. The individual pieces were painted with gloss paint and assembled into the basic go-kart shape. The metal frame of the go-kart was taken to Steelman Engineering who helped the boys to join the framework together to create a base for the wooden structure. The framework was powder-coated, the wheels added and the go-kart was assembled and ready to go. As part of the whole experience, Paul McLaughlin brought in his petrol go-kart to show the boys. They also had a day out at Lyon’s Go-Karting where they raced against each other. Many thanks to Bernard Mullen, Steelman Engineering, Paul McLaughlin and Lyon Go-Karting for their involvement and especially to Mr Gardner for taking on this mammoth task and for making this such an exciting experience for the boys.

Ormeau Concert Band A musical evening was organised by the Ormeau Concert Band under their conductor Mr Gary Shields M.A(MUS),BA(HONS),DIPMUS,on 2nd Nov 2012, to raise funds for the Children’s Hospice. 240 people attended the concert which was held in Glenburn Methodist Church. A £2000 cheque was presented to Jenay Doyle from the Hospice.

The Ormeau band has been in existence since the early 1900s. It is a cross community band and the instrumentation is both brass and reed. Secretary Raymond Smyrl says “We perform a wide selection of music and were busy over the Christmas period with carol concerts etc,. In the summer season we also perform regularly in Belfast parks. Currently we have vacancies in all sections- both brass and reed and would be delighted to welcome interested persons from any age group.”

Rehearsals are on Monday evenings 8pm to 10pm In Glenburn Methodist Church Hall -adjacent to Knock Dual Carriageway (between Castlereagh and Cregagh) For enquiries, please ring 028 9070 2644.
