PAGE 3 Segundo Domingo de Cuaresma THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS

God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burn-ing of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice conse-crated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today’s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God’s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham’s obedi-ence foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God’s prom-ise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all peo-ple for all time.

Question of the Week

First Reading — The sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith (Genesis 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18). Psalm — I walk before the Lord, in the land of the living (Psalm 116). Second Reading — God did not spare his own Son (Romans 8:31b-34). Gospel — This is my beloved Son (Mark 9:2-10). Question for Children: Name or draw a picture of a time you knew that Jesus was with you. Question for Adults: In what ways does Jesus speak today, ways in which you can truly "listen to him?"

Monday: Dn 9:4b-10; Ps 79:8, 9, 11, 13; Lk 6:36-38 Tuesday: Is 1:10, 16-20; Ps 50:8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23; Mt 23:1-12 Wednesday: Jer 18:18-20; Ps 31:5-6, 14-16; Mt 20:17-28 Thursday: Jer 17:5-10; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 16:19-31 Friday: Gn 37:3-4, 12-13a; 17b-28a; Ps 105:16-21; Mt 21:33-43, 45-46 Saturday: Mi 7:14-15, 18-20; Ps 103:1-4, 9-12; Lk 15:1-3, 11-32 Sunday: Ex 20:1-17 [1-3, 7-8, 12-17]; Ps 19:8-11; 1 Cor 1:22-25; Jn 2:13-25 Alternate readings (Year A): Ex 17:3-7; Ps 95:1-2, 6-9; Rom 5:1-2, 5-8; Jn 4:5-42 [5-15, 19b-26, 39a, 40-42]

The second Sunday of Lent every year recalls the Trans-figuration of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Mount Tabor has been the focus of devotion to this event. As mountains go, it is not particularly lofty, rising about fif-teen hundred feet, within view of the Sea of Galilee and very close to Nazareth. Scripture doesn’t identify the mountain, but in the year 348 Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said he preferred Mount Tabor to Mount Hermon as the site of the Transfiguration, and his opinion won. It has long been a strategic military site, and ancient fortresses are visible on the heights. Over the centuries, churches and fortified mon-asteries rose on the mountaintop, only to be destroyed by various invaders. Six hundred years ago, local Christians started to decorate the ruins with flags and banners on the Feast of the Transfiguration. In 1631, the Sultan granted permission to the Franciscans to live on Mount Tabor, and they have been there ever since, discovering the ruins of an old Crusader church and constructing the present church on the site in 1924. The top of the mountain is divided into Greek Orthodox and Latin (that’s us) zones. At one time, tourists arrived on the summit by bus, but this is no longer permitted. Some ride bicycles up a challenging and winding path, while oth-ers take the four thousand three hundred steps constructed for Christian pilgrims in the fourth century. It’s hard to imagine the fishermen following Jesus up this craggy moun-tain without complaint. Visitors will sympathize with Peter’s plan to construct booths and stay put with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah for a while, enjoying the view, and planning the trip back down.

Second Sunday of Lent

Today is the Second Sunday of Lent. This week is about beloved sons, Isaac and Jesus. In the first reading from Genesis, Abraham is told to sacrifice his only son. He prepares to do just that. The reading from Romans re-minds us that God’s only Son was sacrificed for us. In the passage from Mark’s Gospel, the disciples are shown that Jesus is God’s beloved Son. In each of these readings a beloved son is brought to the brink of death. Abraham’s obedience and trust in God is tested. Jesus is not tested but revealed to his disciples, who do not understand what they are seeing. Abraham and the disciples are told to lis-ten. By listening they are brought beyond death into life. Our Lenten preparation is about listening for the word of God even when, like Abraham and the disciples, we are asked to do what we think we cannot do.

TESTING TESTING TESTING Often it can seem as if our faith is being tested. We can be asked, like Abraham, how much we are willing to sacri-fice in obedience to God’s call. Abraham appeared will-ing to sacrifice his most precious gift, his son, Isaac. Abraham went so far as to take the knife with which he could have ended his son’s life. But God did not ask that of him. God asked only that he be willing and that he con-tinue to listen. In Mark, it is the disciples who are tested to understand the vision that they are given of Jesus, visi-bly transformed from an ordinary man like themselves to beloved Son of God. Peter, impulsive Peter, speaks and plans an action. He is rebuked and told to listen. The test is not about action. The test is to listen.

IMPRESSION When we try to make an impression, that’s the

impression we make. —Anonymous

GUIDELINES REGARDING FAST AND ABSTINENCE

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are both days of Fast and Abstinence. All Fridays during Lent we abstain from eating meat (meat includes poultry) How do we fast? We are allowed one full meal during the day. Two smaller meals are permitted. Eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. How do we abstain? We refrain from all meat. Age guidelines for abstinence Abstinence is to be practiced by all who are 14 years of age and older. Age guidelines for fastening Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who have celebrated their 18th birthday and who have not yet celebrated their 59th birthday.

Both personally and as a community we deliberately place ourselves in need (hunger being the most basic need) so that we can discover that for which we hunger spiritually in our lives and in our world. We do this to give concrete expression to our trust in God to give us the spiritual sustenance we require. Our joint action is intended to strengthen our deep belief that the God who raised Jesus from the dead also fills our every need.

Safeguard the Children

DID YOU KNOW? Helping children problem solve through communication Often the easiest response to complicated conversations about sensitive issues is a generic one, but these moments can be oppor-tunities to help children grow. For example, if a child comes to you and tells you that a friend is being left out of social activities, you might respond with a question: “Do you think there is anything you can do help him/her feel more included?” Or if your child comes to you for money for so-cial activities, instead of just giving them the cash or suggesting how they might get the money, you might prompt them to con-sider ways that they could earn money or fundraise on their own. In this way, you are not only helping a child find a solution to an immedi-ate situation, but also helping them to grow in wisdom and prudence. For complete VIRTUS® article name and more communication tips, visit www.archla.org/protecting.

LISTEN

Both Abraham and the disciples are called to listen. Abra-ham’s action is stopped by a message from God. Isaac is spared because Abraham listened for the ongoing word of God in the midst of the most awful moment of his life. Peter’s action is halted by the voice of God telling him to listen. The disciples listen but do not understand what Jesus tells them about his resurrection. But they do listen. How difficult is it for us to listen for the word of God amid the noise of daily life, the necessary and unnecessa-ry chatter of work and home and all the places in bet-ween. How can we hear the word of God within the caco-phony of our lives? We must listen. We listen by our in-tentional effort to create a place of peace and quiet within our lives that we main-tain despite the noise that surrounds us. We build an ark to ride out the flood. We maintain a spring to survive in the desert. We hold dear our most sacred possession, the self that Jesus died to save, while still being willing to sacrifice it for God’s call.

Community News Neighborhood Watch Association Program In partner-ship with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the City of Norwalk will host the first Neighborhood Watch Association Meeting of 2018 on Thursday, Febru-ary 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at John Glenn High School. The Neighborhood Watch Association Program organizes the community into twelve associations, with meetings scheduled twice throughout the year in each association. Meetings allow residents to get to know their neighbors, law enforcement officers and city personnel serving the community and learn more about crime trends, prevention tips and strategies that can help reduce criminal activity and keep neighborhoods safe. Additionally, meetings pro-vide an open forum for residents to discuss crime-related or quality of life issues impacting the community. Each meeting concludes with “coffee and conversation,” with community members having an opportunity to speak one-on-one with city staff, officials and law enforcement offi-cers on hand.
