TEHRAN (AFP) -- A fruitlessvisit to Iran by UN nuclear in-spectors raised tensions yester-day, with Russia warning of"catastrophic" consequences ifit leads to a military attack onits Middle East ally.

France said Iran's refusal toallow the inspectors to see akey military site used for sus-pected atomic weapons re-search was a "missed oppor -tunity" that could underminechances of reviving wider talksbetween Tehran and worldpowers.

Iran's supreme leader, Aya-tollah Ali Khamenei, was defi-ant, however.

He made no mention at all

of the failed bid by the Interna-tional Atomic Energy Agencyinspectors. Instead he reite -rated the assertion that "theIranian nation has never beenseeking an atomic weapon andnever will be."

Possessing a nuclear bomb,he said, "constitutes a majorsin," he told a group of nuclearscientists.

But nuclear energy, he said,"is in Iran's national interest."

Khamenei added: "Pres-sure, sanctions, threats and as-sassinations will not bear anyfruit and Iran will continue itspath of nuclear scientific de-velopment."

According to a Guizhentangspokeswoman surnamedWang, Chinese journalistsbegan visiting one of the com-pany's bear farms on Wednes-day as part of attempts toaddress the controversy.

She said they were promisedfull "transparency" to inspectthe premise, but the state-runBeijing News reported thatjournalists would not be al-lowed to ask questions duringthe visit.

The company refused toallow AFP journalists to takepart in the tour, saying theevent was not open to foreignreporters.

BEIJING (AFP) - A traditionalChinese medicine company atthe heart of an angry Internetcampaign accusing it of cru-elty to animals opened one ofits controversial bear bilefarms to journalists.

Bear bile has long been usedin China to treat various healthproblems, despite skepticismover its effectiveness and out-rage over the bile extractionprocess, which animal rightsgroup say is excruciatinglypainful for bears.

The Guizhentang pharma-ceutical company in the south-eastern province of Fujian lastyear announced plans to raisemillions of dollars through astock exchange listing in orderto increase production of thebile.

But the announcementsparked a noisy Internet cam-paign against the listing thatbrought into question the med-

Other photos show the blackbears in small, narrow cages, and employees wearing surgi-cal masks, hats and gloves, sticking draining tubes in theanimals' gall bladders and ayellow liquid flowing into aglass.

The cages are raised highabove the ground so that em-ployees can access the bearseasily.

Animals Asia, which since1988 has been campaigningagainst the practice, on Tues-day published a report andvideo exposing what it saidwas the "brutal truth" behindbile extractions, in anticipationof the visit.

It said that around 7,000bears still languish in bilefarms across China, but manymore could be used in illegalestablishments.

Bear bile is used in Chinaand other Asian countries totreat fevers, liver disease, eyeproblems and other healthproblems, but activists havefor years tried to stop the prac-tice, citing it as a form of tor-ture for the bears.

Guizhentang farmed 470bears last year, and had de-cided to list to increase thenumber to 1,200 in order tostep up annual production ofbile to 4,000 tonnes.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - UShealth authorities said Tuesdaythey will import a drug to treatovarian, bone marrow andAIDS-related skin cancerfrom India in order to ward offa worrying shortage.

"Lipodox will be importedas an alternative to Doxil," theUS Food and Drug Adminis-tration said in a statement, not-ing that a temporary deal hasbeen made with Sun PharmaGlobal FZE in India to supplyUS patients with the drug.

"Temporary importation ofunapproved foreign drugs isconsidered in rare cases whenthere is a shortage of an ap-proved drug that is critical topatients and the shortage can-not be resolved in a timelyfashion with FDA-approveddrugs."

Another drug that has beenin short supply, methotrexate -- needed for treating a varietyof cancers including childrenwith leukemia -- was ap-proved in preservative-freegeneric form for maker APPPharmaceuticals in Illinois andshould be available by March, the FDA said.

In the meantime, a ship-ment of 31,000 vials, or onemonth's supply, is being sentright away to hundreds of UShospitals and treatment centersby Hospira, the agency added.

Prescription drug shortagesin the United States nearlytripled from 2005 to 2010, ac-cording to the Department of

Health and Human Services. Many drugs are falling out

of production because drug-makers cannot profit whenmedications go generic andcarry extremely low pricetags. Profit-incentive for doc-tors to prescribe more expen-sive cancer meds has alsocontributed to the problem.

In October 2011, US Presi-dent Barack Obama signed anexecutive order directing ac-tion to head off shortages inlife-saving prescription drugs.

Obama's order strengthenedthe FDA's power to predictand tackle potential shortagesof prescription drugs and tohalt illegal price gouging oflife-saving medicines duringsupply shortfalls.

Since then, the FDA hasbeen able to ward off 114 drugshortages, compared to a totalof 195 drug shortages pre-vented in 2011, the agencysaid.

The change is mostly due toa six-fold increase in compa-nies complying with a requestto give early warning to theFDA if they foresee a short-age, so that health authoritiescan seek other suppliers.

The FDA on Tuesday also"issued draft guidance to in-dustry on detailed require-ments for both mandatory andvoluntary notifications to theagency of issues that could re-sult in a drug shortage or sup-ply disruption," it said.

(AFP) - A Chinese computermaker on Wednesday asked aShanghai court to bar the saleof Apple's iconic iPad in thecommercial metropolis in along-running trademark dis-pute.

Proview Technology(Shenzhen) says it owns theChinese rights to the "iPad"name and is seeking legalbacking to force the US tech-nology giant to stop selling itstrendy tablet computer in thecity, where Apple has threestores.

It is very rare for a Chineseenterprise to accuse an over-seas firm of trademarkbreaches -- although foreigncompanies frequently com-plain of intellectual propertyrights violations in China.

In a half-day hearing at thePudong District People's

Court, lawyers for both firmsexchanged evidence and force-fully presented their cases, prompting the chief judge tointerrupt several times, specta-tors said.

The district court will de-cide whether the case shouldproceed to formal trial, a courtofficial told AFP.

The Shanghai case marksthe latest round in a lengthyand multi-pronged legal battlebetween Apple and debt-ladenProview, which has been badlyhit by the financial crisis, overthe rights to the iPad name.

The Taiwan affiliate ofProview Technology (Shen-zhen) registered "iPad" as atrademark in several countriesincluding China as early as2000 -- years before Applebegan selling its product.

The US titan subsequently

bought the rights for the globaltrademark, but Proview Tech-nology (Shenzhen) claims theTaiwanese affiliate had noright to sell the Chinese rights.

Speaking after the hearingWednesday, Proview's lawyer,Xie Xianghui, said he hopedthe Shanghai court wouldmake a decision soon to movethe case forward.

Apple last year took thefirm to a Chinese court, claim-ing trademark infringement, but the court ruled the UScompany lacked "supportingfacts and evidence" for itsclaim -- even though a HongKong court had previouslysided with Apple.

Apple is now appealing thatcase but Proview, which makescomputer monitors, has itselffiled trademark lawsuitsagainst Apple in China and isthreatening to sue the technol-ogy giant in the United Statesfor $2 billion.

But Xie said Wednesdaythat a settlement was possible.

Apple's law firm this weekwarned Proview of possiblelegal action over "defamatorystatements and unlawful ac-tions" aimed at interfering withApple's business, according toa letter seen by AFP.

There was little sign the dis-pute was having an impact onApple sales in Shanghai withthe Apple store in the city's fi-nancial district reporting briskbusiness.
