From the Editor

Welcome to the February Edition, and with thanks to Rowan Johnson and Keith Pritchard for contributing their Mini Biographies. In addition to all the regular items, I have added Cross Country Rankings up until the final East Yorkshire League meeting, and the English Schools Championships, partly for interest, but also to achieve transparency as regards how Club Awards will be decided. In future I will publish the latest standings in every edition from the start of the season. After the Race Diary is some information regarding Biathle There is also news about a special screening of a film about running at the Thirsk Cinema on the afternoon of the Thirsk 10 Road Race I have also added an additional column in the Road Ranking item, which is the best performance of the previous year 2018. This will serve to indicate the amount of improvement achieved over the year as now, but also as compared to the previous year. Please as always, let me know of any ‘omitted’ or inaccurate results after please checking on Power of 10 website. I strive to report on every event that club members compete in, but please let me know of any races I have not included in my weekly Race Reports, so that I can include in the following week’s submission to the Scarborough News, who very pleasingly, publish more or less verbatim all that I send in by 10.00 every Tuesday morning. .

Biathle

Information from Yorkshire Biathle Club

For those new to this sport, Biathle is a continuous run/swim/run event with a transition between each element as you

are not allowed to swim in your running shoes. Distances vary depending on your age group which ranges from 7-70+

(so parents can take part as well).

Our 1st event is on Sunday 24th March at the Ennerdale Leisure Centre in Hull which starts with a training session in

the morning (ideal for beginners) at 10.00am and a competition in the afternoon.

Our 2nd event is on Sunday 23rd June and is called the "Biathle of the Roses", a joint event with a team from

Lancashire. This year the Lancashire team are organising and hosting the event and is due to take place in Lytham St

Annes.

Our 3rd event is on Saturday 27th July and is the Yorkshire Biathle Championships starting at 10.30pm at Allerthorpe

Lakeland Park, near Pocklington, which includes an Open Water swim. There is a team competition included in this

event. Entry form attached.

Our 4th event is on Sunday 1st September at the York Sport Village in York and the event commences at 2.30pm.

This is also a GB Series event which is open to all.

For more information on Biathle and membership, please go to the website www.pentathlongb.org , the calendar lists

all the competitions, and entry forms are also available.

Online entries are also available this year for all 4 events. These can be found

at https://www.pentathlongb.org/events/list/competition

Those that have completed all 4 events of the Yorkshire Biathle Series will receive an award.

We thank you for your continued support in 2019 and look forward to seeing you at one or all of our competitions.

Post Thirsk 10 Film. Message from Thirsk and Sowerby Harriers

As fellow runners I wanted to alert you (your members) to an exciting event being organised on Sunday 17th March 2019. I have organised a special screening of a film called Skid Row Marathon www.skidrowmarathon.com The film will show at the wonderful Ritz Cinema in Thirsk on Sunday 17 March 2019. Doors open 2pm for a 2.30pm start. The Ritz team have been very supportive and helpful of this project. We are charging £9.50 per ticket (including booking fee) To book visit - https://www.wegottickets.com/event/463719 I greatly hope this will be a popular afternoon and a good turnout can be encouraged - with all profits going to Bendrigg Trust - www.bendrigg.org.uk

Page 7: February 2019 Athletics Monthly Magazine... · February 2019 Athletics Monthly ... 30 Jun Southport Half Mara Also, a 10K 12 Jul. Walkington 10k Club favourite. May sell out

Skid Row Marathon is a documentary about a criminal court judge in Los Angeles who starts a running club. He hopes to change the fortunes of recovering addicts, the homeless and paroled convicts, some of whom passed through his court. It is quite an uplifting documentary that follows a group as they marathon train together. Three years ago, I participated in the junior Great North Run with my friend Ewan Harrison. The 'run' entailed me pushing Ewan around the course in his wheelchair. His form of celebral palsy means he can't walk. That year and since then I have also taken part in the Great North Run half marathon with a team raising funds and awareness for The Bendrigg Trust. Now that Ewan is seventeen, we are able to enter the full half marathon together for the first time and we have already signed up for the race, which takes place on Sunday 8 September 2019. I think (and hope?!) the film will appeal to a wide range of people including, of course, runners. The Thirsk 10 mile road race takes place on the morning of 17 March, so I'm hoping a few stick around in town for the afternoon and come along to the film! www.thirskandsowerbyharriers.co.uk/thirsk-10 The attached flyer contains further details about the film, Bendrigg Trust and Ewan's & Paul's Adventures. Follow us and share the event on social media here: www.facebook.com/ewanandpaul ALL TICKETS ON-LINE £ 9.50 (inc Booking Fee) - No Concessions and seats allocated on arrival. To book visit - https://www.wegottickets.com/event/463719 If you can share this with your fellow runners, I would be very grateful - feel free to share on any media channels or pass on to other folk you feel might be interested, the more the merrier. I hope to see you there! Many thanks, Paul & Ewan www.facebook.com/ewanandpaul

Special General Meeting held on 31 January 2019

The meeting was opened by David Field, club Chairman, who introduced the purpose and format of the meeting, to appoint the new Trustees and a new Treasurer. Apologies for absence: Ralph Broadley, Melanie Padgham, Neil Scruton, Margaret Scruton, Tony Tomaszewicz and Jane Hamp. Election of new Trustees: David Field announced that five members had been nominated and seconded for four available places on the club committee, these being Dale Hepples, Alan Whelan, Tony Rawling, Glenn Shelton and Hiede Wilson. A personal statement from each nominee was read out and members present then voted for their preferred candidates. As a result, Alan Whelan, Dale Hepples, Glenn Shelton and Hiede Wilson were elected as trustees. Election of new Treasurer: David Field announced that one member had been nominated and seconded for the position of club Treasurer, Rebecca Dent. A personal statement was read out and members present then voted for or against the nominee being appointed. By majority vote, Rebecca Dent was elected as Treasurer. David Field thanked the nominees for their support of the club and welcomed the new Trustees and Treasurer. The meeting closed at 8.36pm.

Committee Meeting held on February 7, 2019

Present: David Field (Chairman), Harry Forkin, Shaun Tymon, Chris Wade, Simon Valente, Tony Tomaszewicz, Hiede Wilson, Rebecca Dent, Dale Hepples, Glenn Shelton, Alan Whelan, Mick Thompson Apologies for absence: Melanie Padgham, Ralph Broadley David Field welcomed Rebecca Dent as the club’s new treasurer and Dale Hepples, Hiede Wilson, Glenn Shelton and Alan Whelan as new Trustees to the meeting. Correspondence: No statement has yet been received to clarify and substantiate concerns previously raised by a club member about the club’s processes and activity. In these circumstances the club’s trustees resolved to draw a line under the matter if possible and the member concerned will be communicated with to this effect. Chris Wade has raised the fact that a one-day training course for track and field officials is being made available. This will be offered to club members, the number of officials available currently being quite low. Club Website: Club member Katie Wilkinson, who was previously tasked with updating the club website, attended to update the committee on this matter. To date, work on establishing a new website has covered securing a domain name for 10 years, hosting arrangements, template design and obtaining security certification. Further work to complete the website is required by a specialist company. Katie has investigated options for this, the average cost for such work being over £3,000. However, a local company, Colour Creation, has been identified who would undertake the work required for £500 plus VAT. The committee agreed to proceed with this agreement in principle, pending confirmation of any on-costs and the freedom for the club to manage the site. Screenshots of the proposed new site will be forwarded to the committee. The intention is to have the new website in place by April 1

st, 2019. Katie was

thanked for her work on this project. Safeguarding: Jo Monty, the club’s welfare officer, attended to address the committee. She felt that some good safeguarding measures are in place but that there is room for improvement. Some aims for the future are for coaches and run leaders to have DBS checks, ensuring the use of incident report forms and identifying all run leaders, coaches and first aiders in the club. The safeguarding policy will be reviewed. Jo will set out the mandatory and advisable steps for the club in terms of safeguarding provision. It was confirmed that run leaders and coaches will be required to undertake the online safeguarding course provided by England Athletics at the time of renewing their licences. This costs £10, which the club will fund. Finance Report: The club’s account balances are currently as follows: Current account: £10,230.80 Race account: £7,549.01 Savings account: £41,710.07 Tony Tomaszewicz and Rebecca Dent will communicate and work together to introduce Rebecca, as the club’s new treasurer, to the club’s accounting processes. Social Events: A social meal at Tricolo’s on February 8

th has attracted around 25 members. A ten pin bowling

evening is planned for March 15th. A truffle making event may be held in May.

Junior Section Issues: Letters have been sent to parents of junior members regarding the need for rowdy behaviour to be eliminated at training sessions. Numbers of juniors attending sessions are now thriving, and there is a need to

Page 15: February 2019 Athletics Monthly Magazine... · February 2019 Athletics Monthly ... 30 Jun Southport Half Mara Also, a 10K 12 Jul. Walkington 10k Club favourite. May sell out

juggle available coaches and helpers to cover the sessions. Some equipment has gone missing from the storage facility at the rugby club, and there is a need for a lockable facility on site, controlled by SAC. This will be raised with the rugby club. Chris Wade mentioned that the cost of hoodies will increase slightly, the meeting agreed that the selling price will be £17/21 for juniors and adults. Membership: A query regarding the payment to UK Athletics for each member was discussed. The new fee is £16 per member; the club will cover this increase without increasing membership fees for the present. The question of members failing to renew their membership but continuing to avail themselves of the club’s facilities, and entering races under the club’s name, was discussed. This issue will be taken forward at a future meeting to try to ensure that all concerned are treated fairly. New Track Development in Scarborough: No news to report on this matter. McCains 10k and Fun Run: No report. Any Other Business: The potential of resurrecting and reviewing the criteria for club championships was introduced and will be discussed further at the next committee meeting. The possibility of an award for most competitive miles in a year was raised. The need to consider how many run leaders the club needs, and how a longer-term rota system might work, was discussed. Alan Whelan intends to undertake an Off-Road Leaders Course. Date and Location of Next Committee Meeting: This will be held at Scarborough Rugby Club on March 14

th, 2019.

Mini Biographies

Keith Pritchard

Years as a runner: I never considered myself anything but a social runner, but I guess I’ve been running forever, particularly as a supplement to football training for well over 40 years. Best performance: I ran a half-marathon in East Leeds in 1981 sub 1 hour 20 and Leeds Abbey dash 10k circa 1990 around 38 minutes. Favourite race: GNR I think, 1986, because I had only run a few races ever, the experience was quite humbling and overwhelming. Oh! And I ran 1.28. Favourite female athlete: Jess Ennis-Hill. A fantastic athlete and a truly lovely person.

Favourite male athlete: David Hemery. Tokyo 1964 piqued my interest in athletics as a 11-year-old so that by 1968 I loved watching as much as I could on tv. I remember sitting in front of the tv with my fingers crossed for longer than the 48 seconds it took for him to win gold. I remember crying I was so proud and even when I watch it now it makes me feel emotional. Targets: This year to be well under 50 minutes for 10k, sub 1.50 for a half and better than 4.30 at Manchester full marathon. Ambitions: Like most of us older ones just to keep running forever. The likes of Harry, Ralph and Neil and the ladies too (no names it’s not polite) are a real inspiration. I am slowly realising that just doing it, is as important as the time. Funniest moment: Has to be my first race as a SAC club member at Langdale End in 2017. All kitted out in spotless gear (some of it new) I tripped and fell, face first after 2 miles, in a foot of cold wet slimey mud. Someone from another club helped me up, and then a few hundred yards further on I fell again. Some people never learn. However, I can honestly say it was a fantastic day out and team SAC made me feel so welcome. Joining the club is the best sporty decision I have made in a long time. Thank you, Lynn Watson, for inviting me along.

Years as a runner: I have been a runner for 39 years having started as an 11-year-old when my primary school teacher asked if I wanted to be in the “jogging team”, otherwise known as taking part in the muddy Sheffield Schools’ Cross Country Championships in Graves Park in my white lace up plimsolls. join Hallamshire Harriers and began training three times a week at Hillsborough with coaches Graham Naylor and Roland Heathcote, making lifelong friends. I have also been a member of Cambridge University Hare and Hounds and Athletics Club and Portsmouth AC. Best performances: Junior. Least favourite: Finals of national athletics/English Schools 1500 metres and all the psyching out that goes on putting on your spikes altogether. I wouldn’t have the psychological backbone to be a sprinter! Favourite female athlete: Well known: Jo Pavey. Less well known: Jasmin Paris, (job as a vet, mother of a one year old and outright winner by 15 hours of the Spine Challenge last month!) Favourite male athletes: Well known; Haile Gebrselassie Less well known: Toby Tanser, is founder and director of Shoe4Africa, a charitable organisation that promotes AIDS awareness in Africa through sports and is responsible for the building of the first public children’s hospital in Kenya . He is also a director of the New York Road Runners, the world's largest running organisation and author of More Fire about Kenyan running. He was the year above me at school in Sheffield and used to catch the bus to training with me before moving to New York and becoming so successful at both his own running and his philanthropy. Quite inspirational! Target: to do the Three Peaks this summer Memorable Moments: Being billeted with random families at English Schools Athletics and XC Championships in the 1980s with no checks about their suitability.
