The Dilemma of Diagnosing Alzheimer’s DiseaseBy Ava M. Stinnett

When a loved one starts to exhibit signs of dementia, it can be difficult to knowwhat to do first. Are the signs typical of the normal aging process; a medical issuethat mimics dementia but is treatable and, perhaps, reversible; or cognitive declinethat indicates the onset of Alzheimer’s disease? An early diagnosis has a betterchance of being treated and, possibly, slowing the progression of the disease. Buthow does one get an accurate diagnosis?

The Alzheimer’s Association (2017) has developed a list of telltale signs to look for.· Is memory loss affecting job skills or the ability to perform familiar tasks?· Are there problems with language, such as finding the right words for

familiar objects?· Is there frequent disorientation as to where one is and what time of day it

is?· Is judgment poor or decreased?· Are familiar objects frequently misplaced?· Are there noticeable changes in mood, behavior, or personality?

If you recognize these signs in yourself or a loved one, it would be wise to see aphysician. Your family doctor may do part of an evaluation and then recommend adoctor who is experienced in Alzheimer’s diagnosis such as a neurologist, geriatrician, or other specialist to complete testing.Often, the evaluation process will start with a detailed medical history. Blood teststo detect disorders such as anemia, infection, diabetes, thyroid function, and kidneyand liver disease—which can cause dementia-like changes—should also be includ-ed. A physical evaluation to test muscle strength, coordination, reflexes, and eyemovement can tell the physician about the health of specific areas of the brain. Be-cause sensory losses can affect a person’s cognitive difficulties, the doctor will alsotest vision and hearing. Simple mental status tests such as asking a person tocount backward by sevens, obey written instructions, and memorize a few wordsallow a physician to assess memory, comprehension, and language skills. A brainscan—using either computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)—can reveal changes in the anatomic structure of the brain. These imagingtests are also used to rule out tumor, hemorrhage, and stroke and to show any lossof brain mass associated with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Finally, adoctor may ask family members about a loved one’s behavior and thinking skillsand whether there have been noticeable changes over time.

Although the only current definitive diagnosis for Alzheimer’s comes from an autop-sy, early testing can help a physician determine if Alzheimer’s is a likely factor, al-lowing the individual and family members to plan for the future.

Dear Residents, Families, Friends and Staff,

Happy Month of Love. This is one of my favorite holidays of the year. To me it's a day toremind all of your loved ones how important they are to you. My husband tells me hedoesn't need a day to tell me he loves me, he does that 365 days a year. He thinks it's just aday for Hallmark. I in return tell him this day is to remind the people you love howimportant they are in your life, and how much you appreciate them and love them. I hopeyou agree, that love just makes everything better.

Some of you may have already heard the exciting news that we will be going back to a bulkcable account with Comcast. What this means is that Comcast will be installing cable boxesin all of our apartments and also Wi-Fi in the entire community. I will keep you all postedonce we have dates of when this change will occur. Don't do anything at this time with yourexisting cable accounts.

I am sure you have all either read or have heard how bad the flu is this year. At this time wehave had a few residents with confirmed cases. I am reminding you that you must wash andsanitize your hands many times in a day. This is the best way to prevent catching orspreading this terrible flu. Please remember if you have a cough, running nose or fever letthe staff know your not feeling well and stay in your apartment until your symptoms aregone. Also, if you are a visitor and have these symptoms please don't visit in the communityuntil you are symptom free. we still have about 8 weeks until the flu season is over. Lets doare best to all stay healthy.

I wish you all a month of love, happiness and a joy.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Warmly,

Lisa Schumann

American Heart Month is sponsored annually by the American Heart Association toraise awareness of heart disease across the nation during the month of February.Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women and itaccounts for more deaths in women than all cancers combined?

Family history and age are factors that affect the likelihood of the disease, but thegood news is that there are ways to reduce your heart disease risk. Manageable riskfactors that contribute to heart disease include high blood pressure, high cholester-ol, diabetes and smoking. You can reduce your risk by managing your health andmaking healthy lifestyle choices like eating right, exercising and by not smoking.

You may be surprised to learn that lack of exercise is one of the highest risk factorsfor developing heart disease. Exercise programs like Live 2 B Healthy® are knownto reduce these risks; it improves your weight, blood pressure, cholesterol andblood sugar.

Exercise helps your heart by:

● Strengthening the heart muscle and cardio-vascular system

● Making the heart more efficient● Improving the flow of blood to the heart● Improving the heart’s ability to handle stress● Improving heart failure symptoms

The American Heart Association recommends at least two and a half hours ofmoderate intensity aerobic exercise a week. In addition to aerobic activities, yourexercise regimen should include stretching and strengthening activities. Exercisesshould be personalized and tailored to your abilities as well as progression of yourfrequency, duration and intensity.

Get involved in raising awareness of the heart disease epidemic by educatingyourself on the disease. Learn how to exercise safely and correctly and, if possible, seek help from a certified exercise instructor who can develop a customizedwellness program to meet your health needs and fitness goals.
