TRICKS TO LEARN MULTIPLICATION FACTS

With a math curriculum as extensive as it is parents

can be partners in the process that will allow for

greater opportunities for their children to succeed in

math by supporting the learning of the basics at

home. Since the third graders are working so hard

to learn their facts we are offering many tricks to

teach children in multiplying. Some tricks that are

being used in the classroom are listed here. We

truly appreciate all your help at home every night. It

is truly paying off for many of our students! Keep

multiplying those factors!!!

Deck 'Em!

1. Use a deck of playing cards for a game of Multi-

plication War.

2. Initially, children may need a grid to become

quick at the answers.

3. Flip over the cards as though you are playing

Snap.

4. The first one to say the fact based on the cards

turned over (a four and a five = Say "20") gets the

cards.

5. The person to get all of the cards wins!

6. Children learn their facts much more quickly

when playing this game on a regular basis.

The 9 Times Quickie

1. Hold your hands in front of you with your fingers

spread out.

2. For 9 X 3 bend your third finger down. (9 X 4

would be the fourth finger etc.)

3. You have 2 fingers in front of the bent finger and

7 after the bent finger.

4. Thus the answer must be 27.

5. This technique works for the 9 times tables up to

10.

The 4 Times Quickie

1. If you know how to double a number, this one is

easy.

2. Simply, double a number and then double it.

The 11 Times Rule #1

1. Take any number to 10 and multiply it by 11.

2. Multiply 11 by 3 to get 33, multiply 11 by 4 to

get 44. Each number under 10 is just duplicated.

Seeing the Patterns

1. Use a multiplication grid or let your stu-

dents/children create one.

2. Look carefully at all of the patterns, especially

when the numbers correspond with the facts e.g.,

7X8 and 8X7 = 56

3. Let students/children practice the 'fast adding'

which is what multiplication is.

4. When students can count by 3s, 4s, 5s 6s, etc.

they will automatically know their multiplication

tables.

Tales From 3rd Grade, Ms. Ginderske, Mrs. Martinez, Mrs. Sanchez, & Mr. Schneider

Continued on next page….

The 11 Times Rule #2

1. Use this strategy for two digit numbers only.

2. Multiply 11 by 18. Jot down 1 and 8 with a space

between it. 1 _ 8.

3. Add the 8 and the 1 and put that number in the

middle: 198

Another snow day? What to do?

Take advantage of days at home instead of letting your child settle in with their

video games all day:

Practice makes Perfect!

All of Weiss’s 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have been taught their multiplication and division facts in their class-rooms. Now it’s time to make sure they remember them! Here’s some advice when using good, old-fashioned FLASHCARDS to practice at home. (Flashcards can be purchased at any dollar store, Walmart, Staples)

FLASHCARD ADVICE:

• A small deck of 12 to 15 cards to work at one time.

• Only 2-4 of these cards should be “new” or “hard.”

• Practice consists of saying the whole problem AND the answer (“5 times 7 equals 35”). It should be said without any hesitation.

• When an error or hesitation is made:

ο Give correct answer immediately

ο Have student repeat problem and answer

ο Put card back 2-4 cards from front

ο Continue with deck until a “cold” run through goes three times through without any hesitations.

ο Create room for 2-4 new cards to learn by setting aside the oldest 2-4 cards to make a review stack.

Practice the review stack every 4 or 5 sessions. Practice until through without hesitation.

PRACTICE those FACTS every night, anywhere!

I can’t tell you how important it is for your child to practice their multiplication and divi-

sion facts EVERY NIGHT at home! Just five minutes a night will do wonders to improve

their ability to recall their facts more fluently. You could quiz your child in the car on the

way home from school or on the way to their afterschool activity. Quiz them at the dinner

table or as they are getting ready for bed. Any five minute opportunity is great. If you are

not set up on www.xtramath.org at home, it’s very easy to do. Ask your child’s teacher to

print their at-home code for you, and make it a daily routine!

Try these fun websites at home too:

http://pbskids.org/cyberchase/math-games http://www.aplusmath.com/

http://jmathpage.com/JIMSFractionsrecognizecompare.html

Help your child be more confident and get their work done faster during

Math!

Tales From 4th Grade, Ms. Sujkowski

Ms. Sujkowski’s 4th Grade students

started off the new year writing four

personal goals for 2014. The categories

of goals included academics, personal

behavior, positive interactions with

classmates and health and fitness. Many

students expressed their desire to

master basic math facts fluently as well

as improve upon active engagement in

classroom math activities. Students

worked on that goal as they played a

fraction action game of Cover and

Uncover the Whole using their

knowledge of equivalent fractions and

strategy. The students also relied upon a

little luck of the fraction dice as we

discussed probability.

In Physical Education classes, the

students are participating in a Jump

Rope Unit. They are using short jump

ropes to practice individual jump rope

skills and partner skills. They are also

working with the long jump ropes,

double Dutch jump ropes, Chinese

jump ropes, and jump bands. Jumping

rope is a fun activity that helps to

improve cardiovascular endurance

and is a great winter indoor activity.

Students are learning that jumping

rope can be fun alone or with friends.

Weiss students are becoming great

jumpers. Students are setting goals and

working hard to meet timed jump

rope challenges. They are practicing

jumping without stopping or

missing for 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 minutes.

If they can, they are able to sign the

poster boards posted in the gym.

This is another way to increase

cardiovascular endurance when

jumping rope. Another challenge

the students are working towards is

the 100 single bounce challenge.

Students are trying to jump 100

times in a row without stopping or

missing. It is great to see the hard

work and enthusiasm during these

jump challenges.

Math: Fractions, fractions, and more fractions! Students have been adding and subtracting unlike fractions, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, changing improper fractions to mixed numbers, and changing fractions to decimals and they are doing a great job!! Currently, we are us-ing all of these skills to solve real world problems because, as we all know, life is about the story problems. At the conclusion of this unit, we will continue our work with fractions as we move to our unit on multiplication and division of fractions. During this unit, we will introduce students to the method of simplifying fractions before multiplying so it is extremely important that students continue to work on mastering their multiplication facts! Our math program loves to use numbers that require students to know their multiples of 6, 7, and 8--typically the facts that give the students the most trouble. Please spend a bit of time each night on multiplication practice until your student is fluent (answering in under 3 seconds). Xtramath.com and sumdog.com both have fact practice that is quick and easy. Flash cards are also a great way to practice those facts that have not yet been mastered. Social Studies: In social studies, students have been learning about the development of our Thir-teen Colonies. We are wrapping this unit up with a travel project. Students are using what they have learned about the New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies to create a brochure about their colony. Students will then pose as travel agents and encourage other students to “come visit” their colony by sharing their bro-chure and all of the great things their colony has to offer.

After our colony project is completed, we will begin one of my favorite parts of social stud-ies: Our study of the French and Indian War and the events leading up to the Revolutionary War. Students will be learning about many fa-mous people, places, and events that are very important to the history of our country.

our ‘Skateboard Science’ project. It is a hands-on exploration of the physics of motion. The stu-dents have been put into ‘Design Teams’. They are learning concepts of physics and building the obstacles they will use for their final project. Our first obstacle was a chute which helped us learn about potential and kinetic energy. Each day, students rotate the jobs of architect, engineer, accountant and recorder. They’ve been doing a great job and displaying awesome teamwork skills! Thanks to all of you who donated materi-als to make this project possible! Reading: We are on unit three of Reading Street. In this unit, students are learning what people gain from the work of inventors and art-ists along with meeting the Common Core State Standards for reading, writing, speaking and lis-tening, and language. Our fifth graders sure do love to read their chap-ter books! We are impressed with the number of books they have completed this year. To con-tinue to spread the news of ‘books to read’ to their classmates, the students are going to have the opportunity to share ‘commercials’ about their books with the class. We hope this helps to build an abundance of books to read the rest of this year and into the summer! Writing: The students are just finishing up a unit on graphic novels. Students were given a prompt and then asked to create a story in the form of a graphic novel. For each frame of their graphic novel, they needed narration, dialogue, and illustrations. The students’ final drafts will be similar to an actual book. They got very creative with little details to add to their books! Some stu-dents added a title page, book summary, about the author page, more books in the series, au-thor website to visit, and even a price! Please have your child share his/her book with you, they certainly worked hard! Next, we will be doing a ‘President’s Day’ project in which students will choose a president to re-search. Look for their work in the hall around President’s Day! Science: In science, students are continuing to

learn about force and motion. We have started

PAGE 14 TIGER TALES VOLUME XI I I , I SSUE VI

Tales From 5th Grade, Mr. Bowsher & Mr. Yockey

Language Arts:- The Common Core

State Standards for English Language

Arts are divided into strands for Read-

ing (including Foundational Skills),

Writing, Speaking and Listening, and

Language. We are learning a variety

of reading strategies in order to

improve our understanding of what

we read. We are continuing with Unit

2: Doing the Right Thing. (What

makes people want to do the right

thing?) Students have also enjoyed

taking their weekly assessments in

the computer lab.

Math: February will find us adding,

subtracting, multiplying, and dividing

fractions and mixed numbers. Any

support and assistance from parents

at home in these areas of math would

be greatly appreciated. The Math is

Fun web site is a great resource for

parents(www.mathisfun.com).

Science: In February students will

be learning about Evolution. Students

will be expected to do the following:

Explain how behavioral characteris-

tics of animals help them to survive in

their environment, describe the

physical characteristics of organisms

that help them survive in their

environment, and describe how fossils

provide evidence about how living

things and

environmental conditions have

changed. Please remember that most

of what the students will be learning

dealing with Evolution will be done in

class.

Social Studies: The focus for

chapter 8 will be on the Puritan’s arri-

val at Massachusetts Bay in 1630.

Out of this settlement grew the New

England Colonies. To the south the

natural resources of the Middle and

Southern colonies also attracted

colonists. Students will learn more

about the first colonists and how they

used the land and resources they

found. Just a reminder that for every

social studies test a detailed study

guide is sent home with the students

at least seven days before the testing

date. Students are also reminded that

textbooks must be used for all

worksheets and handouts. The assign-

ments make up about 1/2 of the social

studies grade on the report card.
