Come Watch Miss Representation on March 2

A local screening of Miss Representation will be held at Old Dominion University Webb Center in the River Rooms. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women

to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself. Miss Representation includes stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics like Condoleezza Rice, Lisa Ling, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Rosario Dawson, Jackson Katz, Jean Kilbourne, and Gloria Steinem. The film offers startling facts and statistics that will leave audiences

shaken and armed with a new perspective. Doors will open at 6:00. The movie will start at 6:30. www.missrepresentation.org

Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. All advance tickets are sold electronically via Eventbrite: http://missrepaauwvirginiabeach.eventbrite.com/

The Invisible War Nominated for An Academy Award

Back in August, several of our branch members, along with our sisters from other Hampton Roads AAUW branches, attended the showing at NARO in Norfolk of The Invisible War. This documentary highlighted the epidemic of rape in the U.S. military and featured plaintiffs from several lawsuits supported by the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund. The Invisible War was just nominated for an Academy Award for documentary

features. Stay tuned for the award show on February 24.

Let’s Help!

WHRO, the public media station for Hampton Roads, is about to launch its February Radio Membership Drive and is looking for volunteers to join in answering pledge phones. Our branch has signed up to help during the shift on Thursday, February 21 from 2:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and we need 5 volunteers. WHRO is a treasured community resource whom our branch has worked with in the past. They very graciously allowed us to use their facilities for last month's branch meeting and speaker so this is a good way to "pay back." Pledges constitute a substantial portion of their incoming revenues. Contact Leslie T. ([email protected] or 410-4812) if you would like to participate in this community service project. Even if you can only volunteer for part of the shift, please sign up and come out and help. WHRO is located at 5200 Hampton Blvd., in Norfolk.

Theatre Fundraiser Scheduled for Sunday, March 24th

Born Yesterday is our annual theater fundraiser for 2013, again in partnership with the Little Theater of Virginia Beach.

Mark your calendar and plan to join us on: Sunday, March 24 at 2:30 pm

The theater address is: 550 Barberton Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

There is general admission seating, and doors open at 2pm.

Following the play, as is our tradition, we will have a reception in the theater lobby for our members, their guests and the performers. Our branch members donate the wine, beverages, hors d’oeuvres, and desserts for the buffet table.

Tickets are $23, and proceeds will benefit the AAUW Educational Opportunities Fund.

Contact Ginny Werner for tickets or about bringing food or drink for the reception: [email protected] or 757-623-2345

Tickets will be sold at the January and February branch meetings, and our goal is to have each branch member purchase two tickets to this performance. Remember a pair of theater tickets makes a lovely gift, if you cannot attend yourself.

The play Born Yesterday was written by Garson Kanin, who was husband to legendary actress Ruth Gordon, and writer of many famous scripts, including the Hepburn/Tracy films Adams Rib and Pat and Mike. When the play premiered in 1946, it was more than entertainment: it offered models for reforming attitudes about ethical behavior, the pursuit of knowledge, and male-female relationships. In 1950 a film version of Born Yesterday was produced with Judy Holliday and William Holden. This year that 1950s film was selected by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Film Registry – designating it historically, culturally and aesthetically important enough to be preserved by the library, guaranteeing that it will become part of the nation’s permanent visual record. The play had successful Broadway revivals in 1989 and 2011. In 1993 it was adapted a second time for film, with Melanie Griffith,

Don Johnson and John Goodman starring.

Don’t forget that our next Community Outreach Project is the School Supply Drive to provide Virginia Beach students who are homeless with required school supplies. Gay Thomas, coordinator of school social work services, works with homeless students in the Virginia Beach Schools. Local Scholarship

As you all know, one of the main goals of our Branch is to help advance the education of women in the form of a scholarship. Each year our goal is to present at least one $500 scholarship and currently we have raised $1365 (this includes $200 from the budget). If you were unable to participate in the Norfolk Florist Fundraiser or the Wine Tasting, don't worry because we still have one event planned that you can support. In addition, making a straight donation is always an available option; the form is on our new website: http://virginiabeach-va.aauw.net/scholarship/donations/ or Tammie Rice will have forms at the meetings.

Thank you to all our members who participated in the Wine Tasting fundraiser. This was the first time we held this event and an enjoyable evening was had by all. Total Wine and More did a great job presenting "Taste of the Southern Hemisphere". We raised $240 in

ticket sales and $45 on the silent auction items donated by Martha Sorenson.

It’s That Taxing Time of Year

The Association publishes the following in AAUW National Dues, Fees, and Tax Deductibility online. “AAUW national membership dues are $49. Of that amount, $46 is tax deductible [emphasis added] as a charitable contribution, and $3 is not deductible because it supports the AAUW Action Fund’s section 501(c)(4) Lobby Corps and get-out-the- vote activities. Student affiliate dues are $17. Of that amount, $16 is tax deductible, and $1 is not deductible. AAUW National Life Membership is $980 and is fully tax deductible. Note: [Our] Branch/state portions of dues are not tax deductible... Remember, the tax deduction relates specifically to the member’s personal federal tax return for the amount of the dues allocated by AAUW to support the programs of our charitable 501(c) (3) organization. The IRS does not require receipts for tax-deductible dues or contributions of $250 or less.” Refer any questions to your tax advisor. Connie Davis, Treasurer

And Some More on Tax Deductions

In addition to being able to deduct a portion of AAUW national membership dues on personal federal tax returns, all contributions to AAUW Funds or to any of the specific funds that are included within AAUW Funds (Legal Advocacy Fund, Educational Opportunities, Public Policy, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Leadership Programs) are fully tax deductible as a charitable gift on your personal federal tax return. If you bought tickets for our 2012 Little Theatre of Virginia Beach show and reception, $13 of each ticket price was a donation to the AAUW Educational Opportunities Fund and tax deductible for you.

It’s Time for VAWA

On January 23, 2013, a bipartisan group of senators announced the reintroduction of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This is essentially the same bipartisan bill that the Senate passed in April to improve VAWA programs and ensure all victims get the services they need. Because the House didn't pass this version of VAWA before the end of 2012, we must renew our efforts today to protect victims of domestic violence. Since its enactment in 1994, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) has saved lives and saved money. Though the programs continue to run, the current authorization expired almost two years ago. VAWA reauthorization is long overdue and should be a priority in the 113th Congress. S. 47 is a well-crafted bill with strong bipartisan support. AAUW is particularly pleased that S. 47 includes campus safety provisions which will ensure that institutions of higher education have comprehensive procedures in place to address domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. Urge Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to cosponsor VAWA and move this bill forward! Have You Seen the AAUW Member Survey?

Recently the AAUW Outlook Winter 2013 issue came in the mail and had a 2012 AAUW Member Survey enclosed. However, some AAUW members have opted to receive the Outlook via email. Those members received no notice of the Survey. If you go to www.aauw.org and scroll down, on the bottom left, you will see a link to the survey: “Have an Opinion? Let us Know!” Click there and fill out the survey. Or, you can enter this link into your browser:

www.aauw.org/membersurvey2012 . Either way, you will need to login with your member number. Even if you threw away the postal survey, you can submit the online version. Deadline for submissions: April 2, 2013. I hope all Virginia AAUW members will fill out the survey and send it back in the enclosed envelope, or submit it online. Special Message from AAUW President, Carolyn Garfein

Happy New Year! I am delighted to begin 2013 with an exciting announcement: AAUW will be unveiling a new logo and a new website in February! Over the past few years, AAUW has undergone many changes to ensure our continued strength, growth, and nationwide leadership on behalf of women and girls. The new logo, developed cooperatively by a board working group and the national staff, introduces a bold, bright look that complements our reinvigorated branch activities and expanding international efforts, and it works well with our lively publications, robust social media presence, and soon-to-be-updated website. The new website will enhance our thriving online community, offering members and supporters a variety of new and improved tools to engage with each other and our issues. We will launch both the new logo and the website on February 20. They will also be featured in the February 21 issue of Mission & Action, which is e-mailed to all members who have given us their e-mail address. Beginning February 21, members will be able to download the new logo from the AAUW website. In March, AAUW state and branch officers will be able to download customized logos created especially for their state or branch. We’ll also provide a variety of other tools to help branches and states easily, efficiently, and cost-effectively update their own materials. And we’ll be making presentations about the new logo at state conventions and at the AAUW National Convention in New Orleans. Please stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks about these new initiatives. And if you haven’t already registered for the convention, make sure you do it right away—our best-value rate ends February 3. It’s going to be a fabulous event! In the meantime, if you have any questions, please e-mail [email protected]. Sincerely, Carolyn Garfein AAUW President

Another AAUW Southeast District Meeting--Another Interesting Program

Judy K. Stewart, Co-Founder of the Virginia STEAM Academy, will be a speaker at the AAUW Southeast District Meeting on Saturday, February 23, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., at the Hampton University Library. The Virginia STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Applied Mathematics) Academy is a proposed residential (boarding) school for approximately 1,000 9th-12th graders. The founders hope to establish the school at Fort Monroe and open in 2014. Each branch is responsible for bringing several food items to share with the 30-35 people expected to attend. Suggestions include fruit, biscuits, fruit bread (e.g. banana), muffins, bagels & cream cheese, pound cake, donuts, quiche, etc. No one has to cook unless they want to! Please let Leslie T. ([email protected] or 410-4812) know by February 18 if you plan to attend. Also, let her know what you are planning to bring.
