North Coast Aquatics February 2013 NCA Newsletter North Coast Aquatics Where each swimmer can achieve his/her highest level and attain the best college opportunity SENIOR REPORT JAN 2013 by HEAD COACH JEFF PEASE Happy New Year to all of our NCA parents and swimmers. I hope the holidays were good to you. My senior swimmers have been very busy training and competing over the last 2 months. We finished the first major phase of our season with strong performances at the Sectional Champs in Long Beach and Winter Champs in Coronado on back to back weekends in December. I was really pleased with the way our kids raced at Sectionals and the speed and underwater work we have emphasized really was apparent. We had standout performances from our veterans to our rookies and I thought we raced tough from the 1000free the first night to the 400medley relay the last night. Our kids came back the next weekend at the Winter Champs which served as a qualifying meet for the 14‐under All Star to follow in January. Our 13‐14 senior contingent of Lindsay Ladman, Cora McCelland, Jordan Payne and Josh Parmenter qualified for the All Star meet and went on to strong performances representing SI swimming against Central Calif and Sierra Nevada swimming. We finished the year with our traditional 2 week training camp during the winter holidays, also called "Hell Weeks" where I challenge each senior to train beyond what they think they are capable of doing. While most teenagers are sleeping in, snowboarding or shopping, our seniors are swimming 5‐6hours a day! I am very proud of all of my seniors who made all 13 workouts. We also welcomed home our impressive contingent of college swimmers who were home to train with us during the holidays. They included Grace Benefield (UC Davis), Mikkel‐Ane Stipe and Jamey Lyon (UC Berkeley), Monica Dornick (UCLA), Erica Rodman(UCSD), Katie and Ally Tomkinson, Allie Knight and Heren Alanis (UCSB), Jessie Schmitt and Kendyl Stewart (USC), Jenna Harris (U of Chicago), Margaret Guo (MIT), Eva Pold (Northern Arizona), Kellie Burke (Northern Colorado), and Lauren Mcclure (U of Wyoming). I also got to catch up with alums Anna Pold (U of Florida) and Gloria Benefield (Cal Poly) who recently graduated from college and Jenay Karlson, (U of Michigan) one of my distance legends from the late 90's generation. I know I am missing a few but lets just say that NCA is represented at colleges all across the country! Our seniors are getting ready for the championship phase of our short course season was they point toward the San Diego Senior Classic or 14‐under JO's coming up in February. We will conclude our short course season by taking our top 18 seniors to the American Short Course Champs in Austin Texas in early March. Hope to see you on the deck, Jeff

Some Swim Team Tidbits from Sue …

JO/JO Max Spirit Parties will be held at Monroe St and at the JCC on Tuesday Feb

19th (20th is the rain date!) See flyers posted under events online!!!

If you pay your swimming fees with a credit card or bank draft and would like your

meet fees also billed to your account. Please let me know by email. If you choose

this method I will bill you for every meet that way. You need to send a new email

after 2-1-13 for this method. Thanks!

Reminder: Anything you are turning in to me or the Boosters needs to go into the

pool mailbox. DO NOT hand it to the Coach, put it in your child’s file or any

coaches file except mine at the JCC!! Thank you.

Online meet entries seem to be going well. Remember to check the deadline as

we are holding you to that date. The coaches were reminded again to email you

when your swimmer’s entries are done. I am trying to separate the dates enough.

First date is the commitment online date, the 2nd is when the coaches will have your

entries done and the 3rd is when your checks are due. PLEASE remember to get

your checks in on time or opt for the credit card method!

Our spring/summer Age group meet schedule

will be out within the next month. Please plan

vacations around our championship meets

(end of Feb and end of July).

Thanks!

Sue’s Thoughts on Senior Development

I have heard it so many times, “Senior Development is a demotion” – “I am not going to Senior Development”. Well here is the REAL scoop on our VERY successful Senior Development group. First of all there are no groups in NCA that have as many participants on the roster! Both North and South have over 40 athletes with a wait list at each site! That is a testament to the coaches and to the program. It tells us that there is definitely a need for this level and that more 13/older swimmers than not go in this direction. Senior Development is similar to AG1/2. We are even entertaining a SD 1/2 to mimic the Age Group program in terms of time in the pool. From the upper levels of AG1 and SD come our Pre Seniors. So to be clear, you can get into the Senior program from either group! Some Seniors who need more time even come back to Senior Development and then move again into Seniors.

We have had many success stories from High School Prep, the original Senior Development in north county and Senior Development at the JCC. A little history, HS prep was a 3 day a week 75 min program. We still had swimmers move to Pre seniors from that group!!! SD north just started Sept of 2012 as the need was huge. We had to cut out Varsity and expand our High School prep group. We still could use more lanes! Coach Julie has done a great job growing that program. SD at the JCC had to move 30 min later in their schedule due to the huge amount of interest in that group. Again we could use more space. That program has been around for over a decade but blossomed in 2008 and became a huge success under Coach Greg.

Here are the kids now who can prove my point. They are in no particular order: Started in Senior Development or HS prep and moved to Pre Seniors then Seniors * means swam in college.

*Cody Jensen UC Irvine (HS prep)

*Kristina Berge USD (SD south)

*Rachel Murphy Purdue (SD south)

*Troy Marcickic UC Santa Cruz (moved to Seniors in his Senior year in HS) (SD south)

*Andre Schultz University of Michigan (NCAA Champion in the 400 IM) (SD south)

*Tony Daly Drury (SD south)

*Stacy and *Kelly Blondin Harvard (HS prep)

Kyle Moore (currently a Senior swimmer) (HS prep, AG1, SD south)

Andrew Brady (currently a Senior swimmer) SD south

Kia Bullock (currently a Senior swimmer) SD south

Jonathan Inman (SD south)

*Andrew Ireland (SD south) University of North Carolina

Cassie Wahl (SD south)

Megan Michel (college in Mexico)

*Kurt Grote – he’s the 1996 Olympian who was a walk on at Stanford started with Jeff the end of his sophomore year in High School.

The point of this article is if you want to swim with the senior team or continue swimming in High School you have the opportunity with the Senior Development program. If you want to be on the NCA Senior team, you prove yourself in Senior Development and move towards that goal. If your goal is to have a stellar HS season, train for triathlons, water polo or just to be in great swimming shape Senior Development is the place for you! I think that because we do have space for those late entries into the sport of swimming that many times the level of that group’s appearance is not elevated high enough. I dare you to go head to head with some of our top swimmers in that group.

Senior Development swimmer, Alex Chen 3rd fastest 100 breast time on NCA other 2 boys in Seniors. 6th fastest 200 breast time on NCA other 5 on Seniors.

NCA Top 10 13/14 male 100 freestyle times belong to 1 Senior, 2 Senior Development, 5 AG1 and 1 AG2 swimmers.

Girls 15/16 50 free NCA top 10. Three are from Senior Development: Gaby Thomas is 4th, Melinda Wang is 6th and Tiffany Chan is 8th there are 6 Senior girls and 1 from AG1.

100 free for 15/16 girls: NCA top 10: From Senior Development are Gaby Thomas 6th and Melinda Wang 10th. 7 Senior girls and 1 AG1 girl top it out.

You get what you put into it! If you want something you have to go for it! You can do that through all the levels in NCA. You can rise to the highest level that you are willing to train at. Ask your coaches what you need to do to move to the next level. Get specifics and then go for it. Only you can create the change or energy necessary to meet your goals!

Are you getting a weekly email regarding the Gift Cards and wonder what it’s all about?

Here are some answers to the most commonly asked questions……….

What is the NCA Annual Mandatory Boosters fee???

All NCA families are assessed an annual Booster’s fee. This is in place of any fundraising for the team. Just to clarify, you will not be mailed a bill for this and it won’t show on your account online. If you need to find out your balance you can email Sue or Cyndy.  We started this in 2010 and found it to be quite successful. NCA has an operating budget of over $30,000.00. We have two ways to generate money ‐  (1) through our hosted swim meets (but these are not guaranteed, we actually have to bid for them each year!) and (2) through our membership’s Booster fees.

Where does the money go?

This money funds many things.  Here are just a few examples: animal of the week awards, swim accomplishment patches, swimmer of the month awards, caps and t shirts for JO’s, stipends for Zone travel, Far Western travel and Senior travel, kickboards, pace clocks, our annual holiday party, end of summer party, pancake breakfasts, and college scholarships! This fee takes the place of any fundraising. No more swimathons, candy sales, ad sales and $25.00 snack bar fees for NCA hosted meets that we used to charge. The NCA Boosters funds do not go to coaching salaries or pool rental fees. These monies are used for the benefit of all our NCA swimmers.

How much do I have to pay?

As you move up in the program the fees increase.    The fees per group are as follows:   Red, White and Blue $50.00   AG3 and Senior Development (the old HS prep) $100.00   AG2 $200.00   AG1 $250.00   Senior $450.00

What if I have more than one child in the program?   Is this tax deductible?

Any family with multiple athletes pays in full for the highest level athlete then only 50% on the other athletes in the program. These fees can be paid directly to the NCA Boosters and can be claimed as a tax deduction as the Boosters are a 501(C)3 organization (tax id 95‐3825957).  You can also choose to pay for the booster fee through our gift card option.

When you participate in the gift card option a percentage of your gift card order is credited to your child’s account. For example, if the grocery stores offer 4% back and you buy a gift card for $400.00 your NCA Boosters account (again not accessible online) is credited $16.00 (4% of $400). There are many choices from gas, department stores, restaurants, hotels to airlines!  The order forms are updated as new stores come on and others go off the list. Typically the order form is sent out one week before the order is due. Orders MUST be received on the date below. Late orders cannot be processed and will be held until the next order is due!

When can I order gift cards?

The due dates to order are listed below. Please mark your calendars. We place orders at least 2x a month as it seemed to help people with budgeting for their cards.  All gift cards are good for the amount purchased. They do not have an expiration date.

Upcoming Gift Card Due dates in 2013 are as follows:

All orders must be paid for by check and need to be at the pools by the due date. They can be turned in earlier, but not later.  You can also email the order to [email protected]  and just send the check to the pool.  An order will not be processed if it is not accompanied by a check and the official form that is sent out via e mail. No scraps of paper anymore!!!!

How  can  a  few  pieces  of  canvas  make  a  difference  in  the  way  swimmers  perform?  According to Head Coach Jeff Pease, “during meets, team pride grows under those green NCA tarps”.  Beneath the NCA banner coaches hold private conversations with swimmers about goals and performance, while swimmers use the green canopied NCA clubhouses as places for needed relaxation and event preparation.

Recently the boosters allocated funds to refurbish damaged tarps, and purchased sorely needed  replacement  tarps.    Although  activities  under  the  team’s  tarps  are  designed exclusively for swimmers and coaches, parents play a critical role as tarp “lifeguards”.  As NCA  Booster  President  Mary  Kay  Barry  points  out  “,  investing  in  quality  tarps  is expensive, but worth it.  Let’s protect the investment by having an expanded role for NCA parents, who can make sure our tarps are carefully set up, taken down, transported, and stored.”

To the end of doing a better job of taking care of tarps, we are seeking a group of parent volunteers  interested  in being caretakers  of  team tarps.    This  job  requires  transporting tarps  to  and  from meets,  careful  management  of  the  set  up/take  down  process,  and working closely with other tarp volunteers.  Those identified as tarp volunteers will earn volunteer credit and be excused from other volunteer duties.

If  you’re  interested  in  taking  on  this  important  project, contact  booster  board  member  Jack  Curtin  at jklm.curtin@gmail  or  Sue  Parnes  at  [email protected]  for more information.   Thanks for your involvement!!

Let’s Harp on the Importance of Tarps!

SEPTEMBER

Max Rosen‐ Max is such a sweet boy, I love having him in the group. He pays attention to details of his swimming, always pays attention and is well‐liked by his peers. I’ve enjoyed watching him compete and grow within the program. Keep up the great work Max

OCTOBER

Allysa Dudley‐ Allysa is the friendliest girl I have ever met. She greets me with a huge hug and smile and I can count on her to make any new swimmer feel at home. She isn’t just a ball of sunshine, she works hard, listens to instructions and tries to be the best she can be. I like the fierce, friendly combination.

NOVEMBER

Adelle Vo‐ Adelle is very dedicated to being a good swimmer. I like that she takes the time to focus on her strokes, makes corrections, and swims the best she can. I also appreciate that Adelle is on time to workouts and is always ready to get in the water when I finish up my group before hers. She’s a true leader.

DECEMBER

Taylor Wassel‐  Taylor has been very determined to improve her strokes and move into the next group. I like her competitiveness and have seen a lot of growth in the last few months. She’s been paying attention, keeps track of intervals and pushes herself to finish first in the group (and not just her lane). I’m excited to see her continue to grow!

JANUARY

Dylan Le‐ Dylan has made huge improvements in his strokes and I’m excited that he’s been able to do more strokes at meets. I’ve had a couple of good laughs with Dylan because of mishaps at the meet, but he’s such a great sport, tries hard and is a true asset to the team. I’m excited to see Dylan continue to grow in the sport.

Age Group 3

SEPTEMBER

Gigi Bolton‐ Gigi always makes practice a little brighter with her gorgeous big smile. She works hard, pays attention to detail, listens, gets along with everyone and always tries to do exactly what the coach wants. It’s a given that she would be swimmer of the month.

OCTOBER

Emily Broberg‐ I really like the progress that Emily has made in this last year. I can see her strokes improving, her competitiveness shining through and she’s coming out of her shell quite a bit. I’m excited to see how far she’ll continue to grow this year.

NOVEMBER

Margaux Kelley‐ Margaux has come a long way in a very short amount of time. I attribute it to her work ethic, dedication to the sport, and willingness to make changes to help her strokes out. She started out this season brand‐new to AG3 and is now one of the leaders of the group. Keep it up Margaux!!

North Coast Aquatics February 2013

DECEMBER

Sam Weick‐ Sam is a very talented swimmer. He’s had to struggle with paying attention and fine‐tuning his strokes in order to be the best that he can be, but I like that he never gets down or feels like he’s being picked on. He takes the feedback, applies it and moves on.  I love that he gets along with all the other boys and has grown into a leadership position. He’s thinking more about his strokes and I can see him focusing a lot better than he was. Keep it up Sam!

JANUARY

Billy Yeager‐ Billy makes coaching easy. He listens to everything I tell him, knows intervals, makes corrections to his strokes immediately and is well‐liked. There isn’t one bad thing I can say about him. I’ve been blessed to have such a great swimmer in the group and will miss him when he moves on to Senior Development.

3:30 Blue Group

SEPTEMBER

Bea De Oliveira‐ Bea has been really working hard and moving up within her lane. Bea has been working hard to improve her strokes, takes feedback and tries to immediately apply it and focuses on her form. As she becomes stronger and her strokes continue to improve, I see her gain more confidence in her swimming ability and that’s really exciting to see.

OCTOBER

Sara Eckmann‐ It has been wonderful having Sara get more dedicated to the sport of swimming. She has a lot of natural talent and having her come more often to workout has really improved her endurance and strength. I’ve loved watching her grow and start taking over as leader of her lane. Keep up the hard work Sara!

NOVEMBER

Anna Poon‐ Anna is a coach’s dream. She works hard, thinks about her strokes and listens well. I can always count on her to be on task and to give the set her best effort. It’s been fun watching her challenge herself and to continue to grow within the sport. Keep it up Anna!

DECEMBER

Lan Zhu‐ Lan is very social and the kids love him, but he always gets down to business when it comes time to practice. He works hard, pushes himself to be the best, and yet still thinks about his teammates. He’s humble enough to let the other kids go first in a set where he knows they are stronger and would never run over another swimmer. I love that he’s respectful to his teammates and a true team player.

JANUARY

Ryan and Liam Gillies‐ Ryan and his brother Liam have to be the most improved swimmers I have. When they first joined the team, I couldn’t get through a workout without yelling at them at least 20 times. I had other kids on Ryan and Liam patrol to make sure they were listening to instructions and not underwater. Now they are moving into the next level, have learned tremendous amounts of self control and are becoming true swimmers. I’m really proud of the progress they have made.

North Coast Aquatics February 2013 Coach GREG Swimmers of the Month

August 2012 TIFFANY CHAN Tiffany swam some great events while representing NCA at the JO Max meet held at Palomar College. A high school teammate of Melinda, Tiffany is a great swimmer with a strong work ethic. Having some experience as a freshman swimming varsity events has given Tiffany the swimming bug. Expect to see continued great things from this NCA swimmer. September 2012 MERCEDES ROMERO One of many swimmers representing NCA at the La Jolla Rough Water, Mercedes finished 34th in the 1-mile race. Not only being a great teammate, Mercedes works hard and helps guide her workout lane through practices. Beginning her sophomore year at Mission Bay High School, Mercedes has many traits that make up a great NCA swimmer. She will tackle new events at swim meets and give everything she has for some great swims. October 2012 A.J. KRAUS Sometimes, when I start thinking I have too much going on, I always stop and think of the schedule that AJ successfully maintains. A sophomore at Jserra Catholic in San Clemente, AJ is up before our seniors and on the train to school. After school, he runs with the cross country team and then heads back down to San Diego for evening swim practices. In between, is homework time. Anytime I need a little extra inspiration, I just think of AJ. On top of all of this, AJ is a great swimmer and a great member of the Senior Development group. November 2012 CLAIRE GUANG One of the swimmers that transitioned from Coach Skye and the AG3 group, Claire has done a great job in the Senior Development group. Swim fast times at the WSST meet, Claire challenged herself and tried out many new events. An 8th grader at Carmel Valley Middle School, Claire works hard to get her academics and swimming balanced and keeps her lane laughing during workouts. December 2012 THOMAS KIM One of our new members to the Senior Development group, Thomas comes to us from the JCC Barracuda’s program. An 8th grader at Standley Middle School, Thomas is one hard worker. Loving breaststroke, Thomas works hard on every set he does. Developing into a great teammate, Thomas swam his first USA meet in December in the Holiday Dual Meet with Heartland, posting great 1st time times. Way to go Thomas! January 2013 ANDREW BIELER Always with a smile on his face, Andrew is moving up the ranks in the Senior Development program. Posting some great times at the 12/over no time standard meet at the end of January, Andrew impressed everyone. The newest member to the sub-1 minute club in the 100 free, Andrew is on his way. An 8th grader at Carmel Valley Middle School, Andrew is setting himself up for a great swimming career with NCA!

SEPTEMBER: AG3: Eric Wang One of the brightest young stars to the AG program in Carlsbad, I’m very excited to see what such a balanced swimmer in the water will contribute to our strong upper end boys when he begins his transition to AG2. Welcome aboard, Eric! AG2: Lily Sullivan Quite possibly the most versatile new swimmer to AG2, Lily is an incredible kicker with profound underwater dolphin ability. Her general knack for her body awareness makes stroke adjustment come almost effortlessly, and she puts great effort to both the intensity and technical aspects of her swimming. Excellent job young lady! AG1: Sage Homer Though Sage is still learning to coordinate his body, he is building so much momentum and growing almost overnight as he steps out of his comfort zone with transitions to the Senior program. Though he’s often more quiet than the rest of the boys, his mature attitude sets the bar of leadership up north. Superb job thus far young man, keep up the great work. OCTOBER: AG3: Courtney Cox A new swimmer to AG3 this Fall, Courtney is without a doubt a key to our future team success both as great training partner, competitive racer, and welcoming team member. This young lady is mature beyond her years and I look forward to seeing what she will provide NCA as she plugs away at her goals. Great job Courtney! AG2: Melissa Kay Melissa speaks softly but swims with an incredible kick! As she continues to work on her distance per stroke in her FR, she’ll continue to build her confidence as a strong middle distance Freestyler and Breaststoke swimmer. Way to go so far Melissa, keep it up! AG1: Tyler Sande It seems no SOM list from Carlsbad would be complete without noting the efforts of this young man. Tyler Sande once again proves himself as one of the toughest trainers in North County. Motivation in training is rarely the issue as he welcomes challenges with open arms. Tyler and I are continuing to combine his youthful energy and with the challenge of making him one of the most proficient and technically studious swimmers in the AG program. With his focused determination along with the technical specificity of such a wonderful sport, Tyler continues to establish a grand foundation in building an incredible personal legacy of swimming. Keep up the great work, Ty!

NOVEMBER: AG3: Harley Young Another new swimmer to the AG program starting in September, Harley consistently demonstrates her dominance within our challenge kick sets and middle distance Freestyle sets. She’s doing an outstanding job this season and I look very much forward to her transition to AG2. Way to go, Harley! AG2: Bella Souza: This young lady often flies under the radar with her teammates, but do not count her out when the going gets tough. Bella Souza in my opinion has one of the most propulsive, explosive, and efficient Breaststroke techniques I’ve seen. Though she’s still learning how to use her legs in a FR kick set, during Best Form work (for her, obviously Breaststroke) it is truly a site to behold. A developing middle distance Freestyle swimmer to boot, Bella has surely established her place among some outstanding swimmers here in Carlsbad. Way to go, Bella!!!

NOVEMBER (continued) AG1: Sukhman Singh: Challenged daily by a great group of boys up north, Sukhman has established himself as an up-and-coming Pre-Senior with vast potential. Gaining confidence at the AG3/2 level in Fly, Sukhman has solidified his Far Western time in the 100 & 200 Backstroke (as of Winter Age Group Champs). A FW qualifier, NCA Pre-Senior, who knows what’s next for this young man, whatever it is he’ll do a great job! Keep up the solid work, Sukhman! DECEMBER: AG3: Connor Mes Trying to communicate the importance of kicking with Freestyle swimming has been a bit of a challenge for my AG3 boys – however, Connor Mes has taken to it wonderfully. Seeing it implemented time and time again during practice, he seems to switch gears and really take off leaving his coach astonished. Having now taken on the task of his kick, Connor will use this same specific focus toward his streamline dolphin kick in order to further propel him in his Fly and Backstroke events. Fantastic job so far Connor, keep up the great work!!! AG2: Skylar Swan Skylar’s cheerful and upbeat attitude continues as she builds strength as a strong middle distance Freestyle swimmer. She’s been steadily incorporating more speed to the front end of sets showing a true dedication of not just swimming – but racing! Great job so far, Skylar! Keep up the great work! AG1: Jessie Pentlarge Jessie has also begun her transition to the Senior program. Continuing her success at meets, she once again solidified her Far Western cuts in both the 100 & 200 Backstroke at the Winter Age Group Champs. While continuing to experiment with her underwater dolphin work, her overall tempo for Backstroke and Freestyle, we will all watch as this young lady takes off to another level! Way to go Jessie! JANUARY: AG3: Catie Pentlarge What an athletic swimmer Catie is! Her versatility through all strokes is evident, but her passion for Breaststroke is even more obvious as she races (and holds her own) against those swimming Fly or Backstroke! As she begins her transition to AG2, she is one of a few 10 year olds with such a commanding force in the water. Outstanding job so far Catie, keep up the great work! AG2: Kenny Trang Though Kenny is one of the few boys in Carlsbad’s AG2 program, he nevertheless gets the job done when it’s time to race. Dropping significant time in all his races at the Solana Beach meet in January, Kenny is zeroing in on at least 4 Far Western cuts as we look forward to another stellar JO swim meet. Excellent job Kenny!!! AG1: Carlie Stipe Through the better part of the season, Carlie has quietly moved herself from the middle/back of the lane, to now consistently leading her lane both in terms of swim performance and as a young leader. More often than not, Carlie is found pushing her own boundaries of technical precision with intensity while going toe-to-toe with some of our upper-end Pre-Seniors (Carlie just moved to AG1 this season!) She had an excellent meet this month, and we look forward to see what she will do at JO’s . . . and hopefully Far Westerns! Way to go so far, Carlie!

COACH MICKEY Swimmer of the Month

SEPTEMBER 2012 AG1 Riley McDonald: Starting the first day of the season Riley has shown me she is extremely motivated and focused. She challenges herself daily and is constantly figuring out ways to get better. She is a great role model for all my age group swimmers and I see that leadership continuing throughout her career. I have no doubt that she has a great season ahead of her. Keep up the great work Riley!! AG2 Heloise LeBlanc: Heloise came into my group this month from Age Group 3 and I couldn't be more impressed with the progress she has made. She wasn't the fastest kicker on the first day but with consistent work has become better and better. I tell my swimmers that it’s easy to work at things you're good at, but hard to challenge yourself at things you’re not. Heloise has no problem with this and I anticipate a terrific short course season. Congrats Heloise!! OCTOBER 2012 AG1 Crystal Yang: Crystal has impressed me with her great attitude and willingness to do anything asked, no matter how difficult it seems. She is constantly pushing herself, with a great understanding of work ethic. Not only is her breaststroke getting better each week, but she never backs down on an endurance set. Congratulations Crystal!! AG2 Michael Damsky: Michael is everything a coach looks for: hard worker, attentive, focused and a great teammate. For these reasons he has flourished in Age Group 2 and recently moved into Age Group 1. His goals are to make JOs by the end of the season and if he continues down the same path and think these goals will be accomplished! Michael, I can’t wait to see what is ahead!! NOVEMBER 2012 AG1 Allison Liu: The great thing about Allison is that she is always looking to improve. It doesn't matter how fast her backstroke is, she always finds legitimate reasons for why it can get better. Although happy with her progress, she never settles, and because of this I see a great future for Allison in swimming and throughout her life!! Keep it up Allison!! AG2 Brian Xia: When Brian started the season I would say he identified himself as a baseball player that swam. In the last three months I would now say he considers himself a baseball player and swimmer. He is motivated, arrives at practice early and will never shy away from a challenging set. Brian recently competed in the Turkey Classic where he got not only his first JO cut, but 8 of them!! Great job Brian!!

COACH MICKEY Swimmers of the Month

DECEMBER 2012 AG1 Steven Abrahamson: Steven has made significant technical improvement of the last few months. He understands that great racers work very hard to swim more efficiently, putting just as much focus on great technique as they do the time on the scoreboard. He is becoming a leader in my group through his consistent work ethic and determination to get better. I see big things ahead for Steven!! AG2 Braedon Rawers: Brady started the season juggling football and swimming. With the completion of football season Brady has been at practice almost everyday and has shown tremendous improvement in the last month. He got his first JO cut as a 13 year old in the 200 back and has his sights set on a few more goals by the end of season. I believe in Brady and can’t wait to watch him continue to progress in the sport!!

JANUARY 2013

AG1 Christina Indudhara: An accomplished runner, Christina began the season competing on the LCC cross country team. Because she was juggling two practices a day, she was quite tired throughout the first few months. Christina never complained about her grueling schedule and kept pushing herself. With the end of the high school XC season, Christina has dedicated herself to getting better in the water, having some breakthroughs both in practice and meets. Her toughness through adversity has shown me a lot and I know it will help her succeed throughout high school!!

AG2 Mia Ryan: Mia joined the group early in the season as a move-up from Age Group 3. She has done a great job adapting to the challenges of Age Group 2 and has made significant improvements in technique and time in the past month. Winter Champs was her 3rd meet as an age group swimmer and she made several finals and got a 13-14 JO cut. She loves to compete and "sprint" and I can’t wait to she what she accomplishes in 2013!!
