ORANJESTAD -- In view ofthe precarious situation of theSATA Company during thesedays, and because of the poten-tial consequences for Aruba, the government instituted acommission to deal with thesituation. The commission ispresided by government Medi-ator Anselmo Pontilius, with alawyer of the employees, AAANV, and the Aruba InvestmentBank as financial advisor.

In the past days SATA hasbeen talking to various partiesinterested in taking over thecompany. The company re-quested at least one more weekto try to come up with a solu-tion that would benefit all theparties involved. While saidnegotiations are ongoing, thegovernment was successful inlifting the tax embargo of thecompany so that employeescould be paid their salaries. This obviously was a tremen-dous relief for the employees, though temporary.

There are serious negotia-tions taking place with a groupthat has demonstrated an inte -rest in taking over the com-pany. They have requested onemore week to finalize the ne-gotiations.

Everyone hopes that the ne-gotiations will be fruitful so thatthey can save the many jobs atstake and that the governmentwould be able to ultimately col-lect the overdue taxes thatSATA owes the government.

TEHRAN (AFP) - Iran an-nounced new strides in its nu-clear program yesterday in adefiant blow to US and EUpressure to rein in its atomicactivities, and amid signs of anincreasingly vicious covert warwith Israel over the issue.

President Mahmoud Ah-madinejad unveiled on statetelevision what was describedas Iran's first domestically pro-duced, 20-percent enriched nu-clear fuel for Tehran's researchreactor.

He said 3,000 more cen-trifuges had been added to hiscountry's uranium enrichmenteffort, and officials said new-generation, high-capacity cen-trifuges had been installed inIran's Natanz facility.

And he ordered Iran to "gobuild" four more nuclear re-search reactors.

Iran's Atomic Energy Or-ganisation chief Fereydoon Ab-basi Davani also said that

the jail -- frustrated at beingleft in the dark about the fate oftheir loved ones -- clashed withpolice and then stormed theprison gates early yesterday.

Some 300 men, women andchildren rushed through thegates of the prison in the cen-tral town of Comayagua whenpolice withdrew in face of thecrowd.

President Porfirio Lobo an-nounced he was suspendingthe officials who ran the prisonwhile an investigation was un-derway into what caused theblaze, which he called "a lam-entable and unacceptabletragedy."

Photos published by localmedia showed grisly images ofcharred bodies scatteredthroughout the corridors of thefire-ravaged facility.

Honduran officials said thenumber of dead could surpass300, and that of the more than850 inmates housed in theprison, 357 were still unac-counted for, although theynoted some might have es-caped during the fire.

The prison, located some 90kilometers (56 miles) north ofthe capital city of Tegucigalpa, held almost double its officialinmate capacity.

COMAYAGUA (AFP) - A fireswept through a Honduranprison killing at least 272 in-mates, officials said yesterday, warning the toll could rise withmany inmates left trapped intheir cells by the fierce inferno.

Survivors described wren -ching scenes of inmates clutch-ing each other in desperationwhile being engulfed by chok-ing smoke and flames, in whatis the world's deadliest prisonblaze in a decade.

"They tried to save them-selves by hurling themselvesinto the shower, sinks" and anyother source of water theycould find, one survivor said.

"We are pulling out bo -dies," said prison directorDanilo Orellana. "The situa-tion is serious. Most have as-phyxiated."

Witnesses said some of theinmates escaped by jumpingfrom the prison rooftop, andthere were reports that somehad fled the crowded facilityand were on the loose.

Officials were unclearabout the cause, at first surmis-ing that the blaze was sparkedby a short circuit. But laterthey did not rule that the firemight have been deliberatelyset by inmates.

The inferno broke out ataround 10:50 pm Tuesday, andtook about three hours to bringunder control.

(AFP) - About 450 millionchildren will be physicallyand mentally stunted over thenext 15 years unless the worldtakes action to tackle malnu-trition, a report from Save theChildren warned this week.

Every hour, 300 childrendie due to a lack of nutrientsin their diet, while those whosurvive are permanently dam-aged in a way that impacts ontheir lives and the economicprospects of their countries, the British charity said.

The problem has becomeurgent due to volatile foodprices, economic uncertainty, climate change and demo-graphic shifts.

In Asia, for example, where100 million children arestunted, the report predictsthat climatic changes to foodyields will result in seven mil-lion more stunted children by2050.

Save the Children saidthere were some straightfor-ward remedies, including for-tifying foods with vitaminsand minerals and promotingbreastfeeding.

A child's body adapts to thelong-term lack of nutrients bygiving priority to the needs ofvital organs and functionsrather than to physical or cog-nitive growth -- and the dam-age is largely irreversible.

India is home to half of theworld's rapidly shrinking wildtiger population but has beenstruggling to halt the big cat'sdecline in the face of poach-ers, international smugglingnetworks and loss of habitat.

The Sariska national parkis in the Aravalli mountainrange and located about 167kilometres (104 miles) fromthe national capital NewDelhi.

Currently home to just fivetigers, officials in the desertpark are working on relocatingmore villagers in the monthsahead, Shekhawat said.

"We expect to relocate allfamilies in different villagesinside the reserve by 2013," hesaid.

India has employed a seriesof measures recently to stemthe decline in the number oftigers.

Last month officials an-nounced that armed comman-dos would be deployed in thejungles of southern India toprevent poachers from captur-ing and killing the big cats.

India has seen its tiger pop-ulation plummet from an esti-mated 40,000 animals in 1947,when it gained independencefrom British colonial rule, tojust 1,706 in 2011.
