FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT

Today is the First Sunday of Lent. It is the time that the Church reminds us of Jesus, who spent forty days in the desert praying and fasting, and was even tempted there by Satan. In addition, Lent is the time that the Church calls the faithful to fast, repent, and do charitable works.

It was during Lent, when I first heard Luke’s Gospel telling me that Jesus spent forty days in the desert. This led me to ask, “Who else could spend forty days in a deserted place?” The answer is simple. “Only Jesus.”

Jesus spends forty days in the desert; this leads us to think about being in a deserted place. There are some images that should come to mind: a challenging, dry, unshaded place a lack of water. A place where wild animals live, and a place of testing and temptation.

The experience of Jesus in the desert leads Him to build His relationship with the Father. Furthermore, Jesus’ experience in the desert leads Him to stay away from the regular world for awhile and to offer Himself completely to the Father. In addition, the experience of Jesus Christ in the desert is our Lent. It is the time to reject the wrong values and to choose the right ones.

Therefore, anytime we are tested; anytime faith in the Lord becomes a challenge; anytime we fail to act the way God wants; as a result we do confess, we do pardon, we do reconcile, we do fast, we do pray, we do love, we do show mercy, and we build lives up.

Throughout this Lenten Season, the Church invites us to journey with Christ on the way of the Calvary to Christ’s Passion and Resurrection. Let us walk with the Lord throughout these forty days and experience once more the joys of Easter.

The Gift of Romantic Love - SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY -

It is interesting to note the origin of “big days” that we celebrate, because each one began with some truth to be celebrated even as it changed with the times and cultures. Saint Valentine’s Day customs and traditions probably grew out of a pagan festival in Rome called Lupercalia, during which romantic love was fêted.

It also has some vague connection with two saints both named Valentine who were martyred in Rome in the third century. Over the years it has become associated with candy, flowers, romantic gifts, cards, candlelight dinners, etc. It probably is the biggest commercial boon for romantic love spending and is a big help to our economy. For people of faith, in addition, it presents us with the opportunity to more deeply understand the mystery of romantic love, and its place in God’s creation and will.

While we recognize that its origin is not particularly “spiritual,” Saint Valentine’s Day can be a “spiritual” celebration too. It gives the Christian community a natural opportunity to give thanks to God, the source of all love, for the gift of romantic love. This great gift of God energizes and powers our first playground and teen age infatuations, our anxiety fraught dating, our gradual selection (in some mysterious way) of our husbands and wives. Within the context of faith, we believe that all that might appear mysterious or accidental is in reality part of God’s marvelous plan for human happiness and our participation in the creation of precious new human life.

This romantic love concerning which so many poems have been written and movies produced, is first of all part of God’s plan for our human happiness and fulfillment. We are designed and created by God to find completion and our deepest joy in giving and receiving love that is unconditional, self-sacrificing, faithful and joyful. For people of faith, romantic love as it is lived out in marriage and family life is the “spiritual” or deeper significance of Cupid and his arrows. Growth in prayer, commitment, communication, intimacy and a shared life bring couples into

deeper union with one another and with God. Children who are the fruit of a mature romantic life seal the love and give it reality in the flesh.

So, as we celebrate Saint Valentine’s Day with the appropriate secular festivities, we should also express the more profound truth that as we live romantically in loving unions filled with joy and exhilaration, we also celebrate and say Thank You to the Source of all love. What a special joy it is, as husband and wife, to be growing closer to God with each New Year and each anniversary. What a Valentine’s Day gift!

But remember that the other gifts are important too. Especially, chocolate.

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION & FAITH FORMATION

Sister Vivian Gonzalez SJA Director of Religious Education and Faith Formation

LENT A TIME OF SILENT REFLECTIONLent has come early this year. It seems we’ve only just put away our Christmas decorations, and some of us perhaps still even have stuff out! Lent can get to be such a busy season:

In religious education we try to help the children to live the season by taking the classes to Ash Wednesday mass, preparing Stations of the Cross where all the children participate, giving opportunity for the students to go to confession, and participating in the Rice Bowl program and in the Parish Mission...

In the RCIA classes we enter the most intense phase of the journey into full Christian Initiation. There is the Rite of Sending in the parish, the Rite of Election in the Cathedral, the three Scrutiny Sundays, Confessions, rehearsal for the Easter Vigil, and preparation to live the Easter Triduum...

At the parish level, we add a 12pm noon mass, there are several group retreats, the Parish Mission, the Spanish retreat, Koinonia weekend, parish wide Reconciliation Service, and preparation of the Easter Triduum liturgies...

One can get tired just thinking about it all..

This first Sunday of Lent we see Jesus resisting temptation in the desert. Sometimes we tend to fall into the temptation of trying to do too much during the Lenten season. True, all those activities which are planned in the different areas of the Parish are important and necessary to help us live the three actions that characterize the Lenten season: PRAYER, FASTING AND ALMS GIVING, but we have to make sure that we don’t fall into the temptation of letting them become simply things we do to keep ourselves occupied. This year the season of Lent should be very special, because the year is dedicated to reflecting on the gift of mercy and the invitation to conversion. Pope Francis opens his Message for Lent of 2016 by saying:

In the Bull of Induction of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, I asked that “the season of Lent in this Jubilee Year be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy...” I sought to stress the primacy of prayerful listening to God’s word, especially his prophetic word. The mercy of God is a proclamation made to the world, a proclamation which each Christian is called to experience at first hand.

So as we prepare to participate in the different activities planned for Lent to help us grow in our spiritual life, let’s not forget to also take time to personally encounter the Lord in the silent reflection of Scriptures. This reflection should in the end lead us to practice concrete works of mercy not only in the service of our less fortunate brothers and sisters, but also as a way to strengthen our personal relationship with God who is merciful to us.

May we all have a blessed and fruitful Lenten season!

ST. JOAN OF ARC SCHOOL GOES AROUND THE WORLD!

St. Joan of Arc School held its annual Around the World Day on January 29, 2016. Each class represented a country that Pope Francis has visited or plans to visit in the future. The theme was centered on treating everyone like brothers and sisters, and Pope Francis’ plea to fight “global indifference.” The event began with a prayer service, where students processed and held banners proudly representing each of the countries. Students “traveled” from “country to country” and had their “passports” stamped. Some wore hats, flowers, and different vestments representing the colors of their countries such as Iceland, Thailand, Australia, Egypt, and yes, even Vatican City. The hallways and classrooms were creatively decorated with students’ projects of their assigned countries. What a fun way to learn about many cultures of our world!

SR. ELLEN MURPHYTeaching: 7B

Been a Catechist for: 12 years, but not recently since I was principal of SJA for over 40 years.

Why is being a Catechist at SJA special to you? “It is an opportunity to pass on the faith.”

Fun facts about Sr. Murphy: “I enjoy reading and singing.”

Our Religious Education Program has been blessed by many wonderful men and women who generously give of their time each week to teach our children and youth the faith we profess. These unsung heroes sacrifice many hours of their time preparing classes, rushing in from work without dinner on Wednesdays or sleeping in on Sundays. They do this because they

love their faith and they love the children of our parish and want to take on the responsibility of making sure God and Jesus and the Church is a living reality in their lives. St. Joan of Arc has a team of over 60 Catechists, Assistant Catechists, Teen Catechist Aides, Hall Monitors and Office Volunteers working together to make sure the programs run smoothly. Some have

been here for many years, others have just started this 2015-2016 School year but all have a passion for transmitting the teachings of the Church.

In the next weeks we will be presenting a brief profile of our Catechists. Please get to know them, pray for them and thank them for their generous work.

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)
