#ith the beginning o' a new year, am tempted to do what so many writers have done recently, that is to ruminate on what has happened to

so many 7lack men and a 'ew women and children3, murdered by law en'orcement in recent months. Their words have been illuminating

and shocking and 'reHuently well2reasoned but only a 'ew have o''ered solutions that might help to change the current status o' race

relations, as they impact and are impacted by systems that 'rame our daily lives. The criminal Justice system, the education system, the

economic system are only three that operate to maintain a society o' haves and have2nots. %ll to 'reHuently the have2nots are %'rican

%mericans who have always had to 'ight against inJustice in %merica.

/ecent articles, like so many over the years be'ore them, have talked about this history o' inJustice and the struggles we have waged against

slavery, discrimination, segregation, desegregation, a''irmative action and the relentless racism that denies our humanity. /ecent murders,

perpetrated by law en'orcement, are modern2day eKamples o' the lynchings that have taken place in this country 'or hundreds o' years.

Dillions o' 7lack lives have been lost because those in power put pro'its above people.

?istorians have documented over !! incidents o' %'rican insurrections on board slave ships 1"!221B"!3. n the struggle to be 'ree, we

have always resisted the inhumanity that brought us to the #estern ?emisphere. #hen we rebelled against slavery in the 1B!!s see (at

Turner, ;enmark, >esey, abriel Prosser3, we were saying, C7lack lives matter.E #hen we rebelled against the 7lack odes, a'ter slavery

and built strong, sel'2su''icient 7lack communities see Tulsa, 5: and /osewood, F03, we were saying, C7lack lives matter.E #hen the

entury tradition o' community

snowshoe hikes. These community events were very popular in (ew ngland up until around the early 19A!s. The hikes were historically

geared toward young and old alike, with entire 'amilies coming out to celebrate the camaraderie and 'ellowship o' being outdoors together

in the brisk winter weather. /ight around the end o' the holiday season the snow would reach a depth suitable 'or snowshoeing. ommunity

members would begin keeping an eye out 'or the announcement in the local paper which would let them know when and where the

snowshoe group would be gathering. The route itsel' was preplanned 'or the group by two or three hike leaders, but it was kept secret in

order to create a sense o' mystery and surprise.

5n the day o' the hike, 'olks would arrive at the meeting spot in the early evening, gathering in a group ranging 'rom A! to up to 1!! people

The group would be dressed plainly and practically in their cold weather woolens, guarding against the chilly night air. 8ometimes women

would choose to decorate the edges o' their snowshoes with small tu'ts o' red wool, a practice taken 'rom the local (ative %merican tribes

who would o'ten decorate their snowshoes. ?al'way through the hike, the group would stop at a local 'armhouse where there would be

plenty o' 'ood, drink, and warmth waiting 'or the snowshoers. 5nce they were thawed out and re'reshed, the group would head back to thei

starting point, with the trek homeward o'ten including a large open hill. %ll the snowshoers would then take their turn sliding down the

steep slope, trying not to be the one to catch a toe and end up a laughing and tumbling human snowball. 7right cheeks and 'ull smiles would

light the 'aces o' the group as they gathered once more at the spot where they had begun their adventure, promising to meet one another

again soon on a snowy winter evening to snowshoe through the woods and 'ields o' their neighborhood.

This winter, arth 8pirit will once again be leading our community in gathering together 'or snowshoeing on many a'ternoons and evenings

throughout the season. )ou can look on our website 'or the dates and locations o' our snowshoe outings. This year we are also eKcited to

host an old2'ashioned ommunity 8nowshoe on 8aturday, February I 'rom I to 1! p.m. at Taylor /oad Park in ?amburg. This wonder'ul

event will be complete with a post2snowshoe meal o' homemade chili and bread around an outdoor 'ire, and even a little slope sliding 'or

those brave souls among us. #e look 'orward to spending time in the snowy outdoors with you-
