Interview with the Recipient of the 2014 PMI Chapter Award for Leadership

Thousands of people make time in their busy lives, amidst their careers, families and other obligations to volunteer for PMI. Why do they do it?

Asia Pacific eLink gets up close and personal with Anca Slușanschi, PMISocial Media Advisory Group (SMAG), to find out more.

Asia Pacific eLink: Over the years, in what ways have you beenvolunteering with PMI?

Ms Slușanschi: I have undertaken various roles over the last decade that Ihave been involved with PMI. I have served as branch chair, vicepresident andthen president for the PMI New Zealand Chapter.

I have also served with the PMI Strategic, Planning and Reporting (SAPR)Committee, then with the Governance Committee. I then worked as RegionMentor for Region 10 (Australia and New Zealand) and most recently Iparticipated in the PMI Social Media Advisory Group.

I have also been involved in the teams working on the PMI Standards, leading the team for theCommunications Chapter for the second edition of the Program Management Standard. Most recently, Iserved as the Chapter Lead for the Project Stakeholders Management in A Guide to the ProjectManagement Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) – Fifth Edition.

Asia Pacific eLink: What made you decide to become a volunteer and stay involved with PMI?

Ms Slușanschi: The people I have met through my volunteering journey with PMI are the reasons that Ibecame a volunteer and have stay involved. The more I volunteer, the more opportunities I have to meetand work with great people. It is also amazing and satisfying to see that what I do and how I can help tomake a difference for other volunteers and contribute to the advancement of the project managementprofession through my global roles.

Asia Pacific eLink: Could you share with us how volunteering with PMI has helped you overcomechallenges during the course of your project management career?

Ms Slușanschi: Working with volunteers to achieve results requires emphasis of different skill sets fromthose of a typical management approach in hierarchical organisations. Motivational and social skills areexamples of such skill sets. Volunteering has helped me to develop and improve on these skills. As such, Iam able to engage fellow volunteers and colleagues better to build and foster good relationships andmotivate them in different ways.

In addition, enthusiasm and passion are also required to inspire volunteers. These attitudes, combinedwith the right skills, have significantly improved my performance in my daily work life.

Asia Pacific eLink: What advice or tips do you have to share in order to become a successfulproject manager today?

Ms Slușanschi: People will be inspired when they see that you are doing what you do with passion. So,show passion and be passionate in everything that you do. I believe that passion is vital for a satisfyinglife, both professional and personal. Passion is an emotional choice that makes what you do moreenjoyable. Passion focuses your attention so you forget any weariness and you go above and beyondmore frequently while enjoying the journey at the same time.

Passion is also infectious; it can spread like wildfire. When people witness your passion, it becomes mucheasier to inspire them. People then develop passion themselves; they become energised; they join you onthe journey; they become more creative; they get better at innovating and improving their ways of doingthings. Ultimately, you will get better at both driving the boat and making it go faster. And best of all, everyone gets to enjoy the process as well.

A strong relationship based on trust is a key success factor. Trust is the foundation of every goodrelationship, which allows you to form a powerful bond that helps you work and communicate moreeffectively. If you trust the people you work with, you can be open and honest in your thoughts andactions.

Mutual respect is also important. When you respect the people you work with, you value their input andideas and they value yours. This promotes an environment conducive to developing solutions based onyour collective insight, wisdom and creativity.

Stay tuned for more interviews with the award recipients in the next issue of the Asia Pacific eLink.

Get involved. Make a difference. Be a volunteer.

CCR Update Will Align Project Management Skills with Industry Needs

On 1 December 2015, the Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) programme will be updated toensure PMI certification holders are equipped to remain relevant in a continually changing businessenvironment.

The updates will require certification holders to focus their learning in the areas of technical projectmanagement skills, leadership skills and strategic and business management skills — the PMI TalentTriangle.

Why?

CCR was designed to help active PMI certification holders grow and develop with the profession. Demandfor project management talent remains strong. However, organisations still struggle to find the right peoplewith the right skills. In fact, four out of five organisations report difficulty now in filling open projectmanagement positions with qualified personnel.*

Our market research team surveyed both employers and project practitioners to learn what skills andabilities they need to deliver results.

The research demonstrated that technical skills are not enough. Employers want practitioners whounderstand their industry and organisation’s strategy and have strong leadership skills to successfullynavigate project complexity.

The CCR program must adapt to provide development of new employerdesired skills.

What are the updates?

Practitioners told us the programme would be more relevant and valuable by: focusing on differentknowledge areas; identifying trends; providing directed learning; and ensuring the acquisition of domainspecific expertise.

We responded by enlisting subject matter experts and stakeholders to design an integrative, experiencebased, competencydriven programme that accomplishes these goals and more.

The new CCR program will continue to require you to earn and submit 60 professional development units(PDUs) for PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMIPBA (or 30 PDUs for PMIACP, PMIRMP or PMISP) over a threeyear cycle. You will be required to earn a minimum number of education PDUs among employeridentifiedskill sets. The system will also give you the flexibility to determine what is most relevant for yourdevelopment among the employeridentified skill sets.

In addition to earning traditional education PDUs, certification holders will still have the opportunity to earnPDUs by giving back to the profession through: volunteering; creating knowledge and working as apractitioner.

Learn more about CCR by visiting PMI.org/CcrInfo

*Source: Pulse of the Profession® InDepth Report: The Competitive Advantage of Effective TalentManagement.

PDU RequirementsThe total number of PDUs required to maintain an active certification status has not changed:

PMP, PgMP, PfMP and PMIPBA require 60 PDUs to renew.PMIACP, PMIRMP and PMI–SP require 30 PDUs to renew.

Only how PDUs are classified will be different. Please refer to the infographics for details.

Renewal RequirementsThere are different renewal requirements for the Education and Giving Back categories based on theexpiration date of the certification cycle. Please refer to the table below.

* Compliance with the new format is encouraged, but not mandatory to renew during the current cycle. Infuture cycles, the new CCR programme requirements must be satisfied to maintain active certificationstatus.
