According to Christian faith and the Church’s teaching, “only the freedom which submits to the Truth leads the human person to his true good. The good of the person is to be in the Truth and to do the Truth.” (Ga 5:13; Jn 4:23-24; 14:6 )

- John Paul II (Veritatis Splendor #84)

FEBRUARY 2, 2020

I have known Ray for several years, both as my personal dentist, and through men’s’ formation on Saturday mornings at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Grove City. In the past ten years or so, men have met at Our Lady on Saturday mornings with various programs or methods of formation. Once

we began the That Man is You program about five years ago, the number of men participating grew substantially. Ray asked me if he could use the leftover coffee, as he found out that the Holy Family Soup Kitchen is closed on the weekends and he was taking sandwiches and coffee to some people in the area on Saturdays and Sundays. On one Saturday, Ray asked me if I would take food, as he was going to be out of town. I reluctantly agreed, and found out that Ray wasn’t taking food to a center to drop it off. He was meeting individuals on the street, giving them food, and having conversations with them, finding out their needs.

Over time, a few other men have joined Ray’s efforts by providing sandwiches or coffee, and some accompany him to a shelter from which the people are required to vacate by 8:30. He meets them now in that shelter’s parking lot, and still meets them one on one, giving them a sandwich, and upholding their dignity. Since some of the families are Muslim, Ray makes sure that he has sandwiches free

from pork. I mention that because I believe it shows that Ray isn’t doing what’s convenient for him, he is doing what those in need desire.

If Ray did nothing more than this weekend charity, I think he would be worthy of a nomination as a Man of the Year. However, this is not Ray’s only ministry to those less fortunate.

Ray and his wife, Debbie, also volunteer annually in the Dominican Republic, where Ray provides dental services as one of only a few Catholics among a mostly Protestant Christian healthcare outreach. Ray and his wife also participate in Asia’s Hope, a non-profit organization which provides homes and care to children who have been abandoned in Cambodia. Their support of Asia’s hope includes an annual trip to see that the house our parish supports is maintained in proper order. When there was a need for a van for transportation, Ray advertised the need in his dental office, and also posts pictures of the children in the waiting area to remind his patients that there is a need for compassion halfway around the world. In Asia’s Hope, Ray and Debbie are also a minority of Catholics in a predominately Protestant organization. I wonder how many Catholics would let such groups know of their Catholic identity, and sustain their faith when pressured to become whichever type of Protestant.

Ray and Debbie also visit many other Catholic churches and make pilgrimages, including to Medjugorje in Bosnia and Our Lady of Consolation in Carey Ohio. Ray is very open to ask about the formation of others, and is well formed, and still forming himself in Catholic Christian life. He is not afraid of starting a conversation with someone about their Faith, and about our Savior Jesus Christ.

FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD

Saint Philip Neri: I Prefer Heaven--Rocky Black

St. Philip Neri was a practical joker, full of humor and a good joke teller. He’s said to have carried two books with him: a hymnal and a book of Florentine jokes. He was also a deeply spiritual Priest, as we learn in this tour-de-force biopic from FORMED.org. This is a beautiful movie, with breath-taking cinematography, divine fresco paintings and heart-warming music. It will have you smiling and crying the whole way. The epic film (3:30:00 with English subtitles), called St. Philip Neri, I Prefer Heaven, highlights the famous “Third Apostle of Rome” (after Peter and Paul) who was a great friend of youth in 16th century Rome. One of the most popular saints of all time, St. Philip Neri was widely known for his great charity, deep prayer life, and tremendous humor. Hoping to join St. Ignatius of Loyola’s new order of Jesuits and be a missionary to India, Philip instead realized God’s will for him was to help the poor and abandoned youth of Rome, and to catechize them in the faith. He wanted to help them find a better life. He became the founder of the religious congregation, the Oratory, that worked with the youth and also labored to re-evangelize a decadent Rome. This captivating film highlights St. Philip Neri’s great love for youth, his warm sense of humor, contagious joy, deep mystical spirituality, and his amazing gift for miracles. St. Philip was born in Florence, Italy in 1515, and died at age 79 in Rome. He was a mystic, and key figure in the Catholic Revival or Counter-Reformation, which brought change to the church during the Protestant Reformation. His feast day is May 26th. This is a great film for families, although with its length, you’ll need an intermission! True Reformers- St. Philip Neri-Formed.org also offers a much shorter documentary style look at St. Philip Neri in its True Reformer series. This video is about 30 minutes long. St. Neri lived at a time of great decadence in Rome, with the City practically in ruins, and of turmoil within the Church. Within the Church, some officials had become wealthy with many servants, instead of focusing on their spiritual call. As a youth, Philip was apprenticed to a rich relative who could have made him a rich young man. Instead Philip had developed a deep prayer life and chose instead to return home and pursue training in his faith. The Holy Spirit came to him, heating his mouth and heart; he fell in a swoon. Doctors later confirmed that Philip had a large heart. He said he had been “wounded by love.” You’ll love the spirit of this video, which takes us right back to the beginning of this great Saint’s time!

PRAYER VIGIL 8 FEBRUARY 2020 - TOGETHER AGAINST TRAFFICKING

Leader: “If there are so many young women victims of trafficking who end up on the streets of our cities, it is because many men here — young, middle-aged, elderly — demand these services and are willing to pay for their pleasure. I wonder then, is the principal cause of trafficking really the traffickers? I believe the principal cause is the unscrupulous selfishness of the many hypocrites in our world. Of course, arresting traffickers is an obligation of justice. But the true solution is the conversion of hearts, cutting off demand in order to dry out the market.” (Pope Francis, Address to the participants in the World Day of

Prayer against Human Trafficking, 12 February 2018).

Reader: A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel: “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove the heart of stone from your body, and I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you and I will see to it that you walk according to my laws, and you will observe and put into practice my prescriptions.”

(Ezekiel 36: 26-27)

L: When our hearts are indifferent to the pain of our sisters and brothers,

All: Lord, free our hearts

L: When our minds refuse to want to know if what we use and consume has been produced by slave workers

All: Lord, free our minds

L: When our eyes can’t see our sister, our brother, in the other:

All: Lord, free our eyes

L: When our ears close to the cry of freedom

All: Lord, clear our ears

L: When our hands and feet become instruments of violence against others

All: Lord free our hands and feet.

In an age when life itself seems disposable, how can we follow God’s call to protect and promote the dignity of the human person in all places and circumstances? This week’s FORMED Feature is from the Augustine Institute Original Series, Symbolon: Living the Faith. To better understand the Church’s teachings on human rights, join us in watching the episode Catholic Social Teaching -

Protecting the Dignity of the Human Person.

THANK YOU!

In November of 2019, Our Lady applied to the Catholic Foundation for three separate grants to benefit our parish. From these three applications, Our Lady was very blessed to have been granted a $2,000 Responsive Grant to help replace the exterior windows in the front of the School building in the Administrative wing. These grants through the Catholic Foundation are a great example of how they continue to further our mission as well as giving back to

the parishes who support them.

BISHOP READY WINTER THEATRE PRODUCTION In a break with “traditional” theatre formats, the Bishop Ready Theatre Department will be presenting John Cariani’s Almost, Maine (Adapted Edition), a series of short vignettes, each dealing with a story about love. With a prologue and an epilogue that ties the themes together, the production focuses on the playful and surreal experiences of Almost, described as “not organized enough for a town and too populated to be a wilderness.” The cast includes students from each class, freshman through senior. Performances are Friday, February 14, at 7 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, February 15 and 16, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students ($5 for Ready students). What better way to break the winter doldrums and celebrate St. Valentine’s Day weekend that spending some time exploring love in this rom-com filled with somewhat eccentric people? Almost, Maine (Adapted Edition), is suitable for students in grade 6 and above. For more information, please call Bishop Ready at 614-276-5263.
