MANAGER’S NOTES

The new year hasn't started off quite as planned. We have made key signings which should help us throughout the remainder of the season and I’m sure we will pick ourselves up from our negative blip during the last three games. We must improve as a collective and strive to perfect our football. The game against Cannons is a big one since its the Rock Cup and although Europe might be looking like a farfetched idea it is still always nice to have belief. The Cannon's game cannot come at a better time; now it’s time to show the doubters that we are far from being dead and buried. Just like the boxer, when we take a stumble we get back up!

EUROPA POINT 3 VS 0 FC BRUNOS MAGPIES

Ali Gonzalez’s second half goal added to first half efforts from Paul Grech and Alexis Sanchez secured Europa Point a comfortable 3-0 victory over Brunos Magpies.

The first half started with Magpies dominating possession and had an early chance to take the lead but Sam Whelan’s

shot was saved by Juan Nieto. Magpies continued to have the best chances, a corner was whipped in and met by Max Bothen whose header went just over the crossbar.

Midway through the half Europa Point took the lead, Magpies defenders failed to deal with a Antonio Jimenez cross, the ball fell to Paul Grech who smashed his effort past Fernando Diaz. Minutes later Magpies nearly equalised, Tom Hudson skipped past his marker and ran through on goal but some fantastic last-ditch defending from Jose Arana Trivino prevented the midfielder from getting a shot away.

Just before half-time Europa Point doubled their lead, in-form striker Alexis Sanchez received the ball just outside the Magpies area, drifted past Lewis Constable with ease and slotted his shot into the bottom corner with a delightful finish. The game restarted and referee Andrew Parody blew for half-time with Europa Point leading 2-0.

Three minutes into the second half Europa Point made it 3-0, Ali Gonzalez latched onto a through ball and drilled his shot into the bottom corner from just outside the area. Magpies started to dominate the game as they searched for a goal and nearly pulled one back but Juan Nieto produced a fantastic save to keep out debutant Jose Mari Ruiz’s shot.

With less than ten minutes remaining, Europa Point hit Magpies on the counter-attack, Jose Campoy Lopez played Marek Albert through on goal, the strikers shot was excellently saved by Fernando Diaz. Europa Point were able to hold on for the remaining minutes and walk away with the three points.

This win sees Europa Point sit five points clear at the top and remain the only unbeaten team in the Second Division while Magpies.

Welcome to tonight’s game. It’s a breather from the league which is probably a good thing alter two defeats and a draw in the last three. Sadly though, it would appear that our new signings cannot play a part tonight as the rule in the Rock Cup is that players must have signed at east 7 days before kick-off. We didn't achieve that.

You may have seen the Facebook announcements. We were delighted that at the time of writing, those five announcements have reached nearly 8,000 Facebook users with Toni Esponosa’s announcement leading the charge with 3,400 people reached. Facebook never ceases to amaze me with its reach. If you haven't already liked us, see page two for our social media addresses.

We are the third game of this cup to play this year. So far, Leo have beaten Boca 2-0 and Phoenix have beaten Hound Dogs 4-0. No shocks so far.

The forecast for tonight is pretty bad. We’ve braved the cold and the wind so far this season, but not rain. Hopefully the clouds will give us a miss so we can see a decent game of football.

At Chesterton, we have hit the ground running this year. If we expected a lull after Christmas this has not happened. There remains a property shortage especially at the lower end of the price spectrum and that’s whether we are talking sales or rentals.

Our new brochure should hit the streets any day now. 84 pages, our biggest and our best.

Perhaps the summer edition can include the team with the Rock Cup.

Dream onC.

Enjoy the game.

THE ROCK CUP AND THE EUROPA LEAGUE

The Rock Cup is the “FA Cup” of Gibraltar. Round one only includes the second division sides. The six winners join the Gibraltar Premier League sides in the next round. The winners of the Rock Cup enter into the UEFA Europa League in 2016/17.

The UEFA Europa League evolved from the UEFA Cup, which itself was initially conceived by Switzerland's Ernst Thommen who, along with Italy's Ottorino Barrasi and England's Sir Stanley Rous, later FIFA President, had created a tournament for representative sides from European cities that regularly held trade fairs.

This forerunner to the UEFA Cup, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, was founded on 18 April 1955, two weeks after the founding of the European Champion Clubs' Cup. The first Fairs Cup involved teams from Barcelona, Basel, Birmingham, Copenhagen, Frankfurt, Lausanne, Leipzig, London, Milan and Zagreb. The original tournament lasted three years, with matches timed to coincide with trade fairs. Barcelona, using players purely from FC Barcelona, beat a London representative side 8-2 on aggregate in the final.

For the second tournament the organisers reverted to club participation but the teams still had to come from cities staging trade fairs. Sixteen sides took part in the 1958–60 tournament, after which the competition was run on an annual basis. By 1962 the number of entrants had risen to 32; there are now over 100. In its early years, clubs from southern Europe dominated, notably Barcelona, who won it three times, and Valencia CF who prevailed twice. In 1968 Leeds United AFC became the first northern European outfit to lift the trophy, heralding a run of six successive victories by English teams.

UEFA Cup

The fifth of these was in 1971/72, by Tottenham Hotspur FC, and the first to be known as the UEFA Cup. The change of name was recognition of the fact the competition was now organised by UEFA and no longer associated with the trade fairs. During the 1970s German, Dutch, Belgian and Swedish sides began to successfully compete with the English and between 1968 and 1984 only one team from the south – Juventus in 1977 – managed to disrupt the supremacy of the northern Europeans.

But following back-to-back triumphs by Real Madrid CF in the mid-1980s, Italian clubs took control in the 1990s. Starting with SSC Napoli's success in 1989, Italian sides landed the UEFA Cup eight times in eleven seasons, with FC Internazionale Milano winning it three times, before Galatasaray AŞ claimed it as Turkey's first European club prize in 2000. With the exception of 1964 and 1965, the final had, like the previous rounds, always been a two-legged, affair. The format changed permanently to a one-off final in 1998 when Inter beat SS Lazio 3-0 at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

From 1999/2000, domestic cup winners also qualified for the UEFA Cup after the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was disbanded. In addition, teams eliminated from the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League and the eight third-placed finishers at the end of the latter tournament's group stage entered the competition. A group phase was introduced for the first time in 2004/05 involving 40 clubs playing four games apiece.

UEFA Europa League

Since 2009/10 the competition has been known as the UEFA Europa League, with the group stage expanded to 48 sides playing six matches on a home-and-

away format similar to the UEFA Champions League. Club Atlético de Madrid took two of the first three titles, sandwiching an FC Porto triumph, and that was followed by successes for Chelsea FC and Sevilla FC. From 2015 the winners gain entry to the following season's UEFA Champions League; Sevilla were the first to benefit with their record fourth coronation.

Leo vs Boca

The game both these teams were supposed to play in the league got suspended because Boca could not field a team. If Boca have their full squad ready and pumped up for this game we might be seeing a surprise result here although given the current form table Leo should have more than enough to

book a place in the next round. Cont:-

Phoenix vs Hound Dogs

An interesting match between two very different sides in Phoenix and Hound Dogs with Phoenix the favourites to progress. Phoenix are in good form in the domestic league and have the players to beat anyone on any given day although Hound Dogs will prove to be resilient as they always are.

FCB Magpies vs Cannons

Both these teams will harbour aspirations to progress to the next round although Magpies are clear favourites to make it through to the Second Round. Cannons have recently improved their squad with various new faces coming into the fray which gave them a much merited victory over Red Imps. Will we see an upset or will Magpies progress?

Europa Point vs Mons Calpe

Yet again both Second Division heavyweights meet in the first round of another cup competition (Second Division Cup) with the aspirations of one of these teams ending after the encounter. Europa Point managed a 5-2 v victory in the league although things could very well be different by January with Mons Calpe seeking revenge.

Europa Pegasus vs College 1975

A very interesting battle between two of the basement clubs in the Second Division. Europa Pegasus played well against Olympique and showed tremendous character against Europa Point putting the title contenders under tremendous pressure. College 1975 also had a great first half against Magpies although they ultimately succumbed 4-1. A tricky one to call with both teams looking to progress.

Olympique vs Red Imps

Both teams are in the midst of some horrible displays and results with Olympique losing their early momentum in the league and most likely looking like the perennial mid table team. Red Imps lost their last game against Cannons and could do with a good month leading into the Christmas break in order to alleviate the pressure on Manager Gary Lowe.
