MANAGER’S NOTES

5 Games won in a row in the league sees us enter the Easter period 3rd and a few points off the promotion contenders. We are still behind them but with games coming up fast we could claw our way back into the mix. Our attention drifts from the league now as we focus on the semi final of the second division cup vs Phoenix, a tough match indeed! We hope the fans are there to cheer us on and help us in the way only they know they can. If we win we are in the final and the chance of silverware will be a real possibility!

FEATURED PLAYER - LEWIS CONTSTABLE

Full name: Lewis Constable

Age: 26

Place of birth: Somewhere in London

Position: The last pure position in football...centre back. Alongside the calm, ref-loving, non-confrontational Michael Macias

What brought you to Gibraltar: The rainy weather. Can't get enough of it - and work.

Best Magpies moment: Every time I win a header is my best moment...it's what I live for.

Worst Magpies moment: Every time I put a header off target.

Pre-match meal: You can't beat Pasta as a pre-match meal. Followed by a banana

Favourite Gibraltar restaurant: Brunos is the best. Try their salmon main course and treat your palate something rotten.

What’s your favourite type of cheese: where do I start. I think cheddar tops the list, but then I'd be ignoring Mexicana, Brie, Camembert, Devon Blue etc. I'm going to say cheddar though. Tough question though.

What are your hopes and dreams for 2016:I hope Brunos get promoted. I dream that one day I can fly without wings

We are under pressure from the paparazzi to start a Magpies “WAGS” club. Could you / who would you contribute: I probably could contribute. But you'd need to expand the stadium capacity.

What’s top of your playlist at the moment: Check out Los Campesinos. Decent band. Or The 1975.

Biggest influence on your football career: Phil Bardsley. Hits the ball hard and the player harder.

Message for the fans: Fans are easily best in Gibraltar. It's brilliant playing in front of you every week.

Who do you nominate in the team to take this interview next?: Luke Watts

They don’t get much bigger than this—the semi-final of the Second Division Cup in Gibraltar! Europa Point await the winners of tonight’s fixture having despatched Cannons 10-0 last night.

Meanwhile, many of us will have attended the two internationals in the last week versus Liechtenstein and Latvia.

Various observations come from those two events:

1. The new VIP area is a welcome facility. Hopefully it can be used in domestic games if there is a commercial advantage to those running it. Saving it for just internationals would be a waste of space.

2. The second half versus Latvia was hugely disappointing. The other 3 halves across both games were 0-0. The problem in my mind is that as most of the GFA players turn out for Lincoln, they do not have sufficient experience of going 1-0 then 2-0 down in quick succession and knowing how to regroup and bounce back. The sooner the international lads are spread across the premier league so that every domestic game is fiercely contested, the better for our national side. Polarising the national team into one league team serves little long term purpose in my view.

3. It was great to see a nearly full stadium. Reminded me of the Magpies games.

4. Lisa’s Chesterton branded crisps cartons stole the show in block E during the second half of the Liechenstein game. Made the second half palatable.

Finally, best wishes to Oliver Cox who misses tonight’s game as he is on duty as mascot for Norwich v Newcastle on Saturday. That fixture is nearly as important as tonight’s,

Enjoy the game.

EVA SPECIAL

Eva Carneiro was back in a football stadium on Tuesday night as the former Chelsea doctor took in Gibraltar's 5-0 defeat by Latvia.

Gibraltar-born Carneiro was a guest of her hometown's Football Association for the international friendly at the 5,000-seat Victoria Stadium.

She remains locked in an employment tribunal with Chelsea and their former manager Jose Mourinho having failed to reach an agreement over personal damages following her departure from the club last year.

But despite the difficulties she has experienced this season, the 42-year-old seemed in good spirits at a venue that would usually represent a place of work for her.

Carneiro is suing Chelsea for constructive dismissal, with the two parties currently trying to thrash out an agreement before a public tribunal is set to commence in June.

The former Blues doctor and her one-time employers were described as being 'far apart financially' following six-and-a-half-hour discussions earlier this month.

Against West Ham last weekend Chelsea physio Jon Fearn has made a first return to the dugout since he and Carneiro were labelled 'naive' by Mourinho. He had not been with the squad on match days since he and Carneiro ran on to the pitch to treat Eden Hazard back in August during a match against Swansea.

Mourinho, who was sacked in December, was furious and criticised the pair for their actions, but they received widespread support, particularly from the medical profession.

Minnows Gibraltar held Latvia in the first half of Tuesday night's friendly but conceded five times after the half-time break to crumble to a heavy defeat. Metz midfielder Janis Ikaunieks scored the first and last goals in the first minute of the second half and later in the 84th.

Beware low flying footballs warning for aircraft landing at Gibraltar.

The Gibraltar government has announced that following serious and genuine concerns regarding the fact that there has been an increase in the number of footballs entering the runway from pitch No 2 at the Bayside Sports Centre, roof netting which covers just under a third of the playing area has been installed.

The net which starts from the airport boundary fence heading in a southerly direction was the solution that was deemed both suitable by the Ministry of Defence, the Royal Air Force and Air Traffic Control whilst remaining practical for the Gibraltar Sports and Leisure Authority to install in a short space of time.

When assessing the works the Minister for Sport the Hon. Steven Linares said that “Although it is unfortunate that there has been an element of disruption to the normal use of the facility, after considering options and actually testing some interim measures, the netting was the

only option left to mitigate the initial concerns.

The safety of those on board both inbound and outbound aircraft cannot be compromised however this project has shown that whilst working within certain

parameters a solution can be found that meets all requirements.

Walking Football is a fun version of the 'Beautiful Game' aimed at getting the over 50's both involved in football and physically active V

GLACIS– 15 FEB

The Gibraltar FA today showcased walking football at the Victoria Stadium's Pitch Number 3 together with the GSLA and charity PAAMOA.

The turnout was great with over 20 male and female players taking part with the matches being extremely competitive as well as having a great social side to it too.

Alex Lopez from the Gibraltar Referees association was on hand to keep everyone in check!

The Gibraltar FA's Grassroots Manager Leslie Asquez is delighted with the launch and this is just the beginning of the process of promoting Walking Football to get as many people involved in playing it as possible.

Gibraltar's Minister for Sport Mr Steven Linares, Michelle Turner of the GSLA, representatives from PAAMOA & the Gibraltar FA's Head Physio Iain Latin were all on hand at todays showcase launch.

GIBRALTAR FRIENDLY INTERNATIONALS

Gibraltar 0 - 0 Liechtenstein 23rd March 2016

International Football returned to Gibraltar on Wednesday with Liechtenstein the visitors to the Victoria Stadium, in the first of the March 2016 "Homecoming" double header.

Gibraltar Head Coach Jeff Wood handed 17 year old Jayce Olivero his International debut, with Joseph Chipolina moving into midfield and Kyle Casciaro joined up front by George Cabrera in the absence of talisman Lee Casciaro through injury.

Both teams cancelled each-other out with Aaron Payas in the holding midfield role for Gibraltar providing the stability to allow the influential Walker to impose himself more and more on the game as time went on. A shot wide of the post from Joseph Chipolina and a stunning 30 yard volley from Payas which drew a great save from the Liechtenstein 'keeper were Gibraltar's first half highlights, in which Liechtenstein had a goal ruled out for an infringement in the wall.

In the second half both teams made changes. For Gibraltar Sergeant, Bosio, Guiling and Barnett replaced Bardon, Olivero, K.Casciaro and Roy Chipolina respectively. Robert Montovio also replaced Cabrera up front in to make his International debut after an impressive domestic season so far. Gibraltar remained solid for the duration of the second half - something which no doubt will please the Coaching staff given recent tendencies throughout the European Qualifiers and neither team could force a breakthrough meaning the game finished 0-0.

None the less an impressive result, back on home soil for Gibraltar. It's the third draw to add to the one win notched up already in less than three years of playing International

football. www.gibraltarfa.com

Gibraltar 0 - 5 Latvia 29th March 2016

The Victoria Stadium was witness to a 0-0 draw last week between Gibraltar and Liechtenstein and today it was the turn of the Latvians, a country with a proud footballing history. Having been the only ever Baltic State to qualify for a Euro Cup, Latvia came into the game on the back of an impressive 0-0 draw away to Slovakia, ironically, the same result Gibraltar obtained against similar opposition.

The game began slowly with both teams testing the waters although the Latvians did have the first clear cut chance of the game as Kaspars Dubra headed the ball from point blank range only to be denied by a great reaction save by Jordan Perez. Another great chance fell to Hamburg striker Artjoms Rudnevs, who lingered at the back post waiting for the cross which so nearly fell to him but JC Garcia was on hand to toe poke it away for a corner. Latvia had the clear height advantage over the considerably smaller Gibraltar side and this was proving a handful for the locals.

Vladislavs Gabovs had a good chance to make it 0-1 for the visitors but his one on one shot was deflected by Jordan Perez who had once again come to the rescue of Gibraltar (how many times has he done this throughout his career?) Moments later it was the same protagonists as Gabuvs once again burst into the area but his strike was stopped by Perez with his legs, the St Josephs keeper the saviour once again! Latvia pressed on for the initial goal which would give them a considerable advantage over the locals, especially with tiring legs showing for the last 10 mins of the first half. Gibraltar managed to hold on though and took a very creditable 0-0 draw into the break and with plenty of ammunition on the bench, Jeff Wood could mix it up come the second half.

Latvia made a brace of subs at the beginning of the second half and the game restarted with the Latvians kicking off and scoring straight from the Kick off as Ikaunieks silenced the Victoria Stadium. Zjuzins pinpoint pass found Ikaunieks in acres of space as the winger crept past the makeshift FB Jamie Bosio (still don’t understand why they keep on playing him out of position) and the winger comfortably placed the ball past Perez. This was not the start Gibraltar wanted or needed and reminisce of the EURO Qualifiers came back.

Gibraltar were indeed shocked and Latvia made it 0-2 shortly after with a header that struck the post but the rebound fell kindly for big centre back Kaspars Dubra who slotted the ball into an empty net. Moments later Latvia had another fantastic chance as a cross, again coming in from Bosio’s flank was headed towards goal but Perez saved. Ikaunieks, who was causing Bosio all sorts of problems again found himself alone with Perez but his shot was palmed away although moments later Latvia did make it 0-3 as Sabala pounced on a rebound inside the area and smashed it home.

In all fairness, Gibraltar were woeful at the beginning of the second half, it was like men were playing around with the boys and it was showing. The crowd had gone silent, the whole atmosphere had gone, the passion was non-existent. It was as if Latvia had turned up late for the party and were finally putting the minnows in their place! A moment of pure comedy ensured as Gibraltar made two substitutions; Sergeant was to be taken off, the number that popped up was that of Joseph Chipolina and the Lincoln player trotted off. Sergeant remained on the pitch much to the anger of Gibraltar Manager Jeff Wood who remonstrated against the 4th official.

Latvia continued to dominate and control the second half as the changes began for both sides. The scoring didn’t stop here though as Latvia continued to pepper the Gibraltar goal and made it 0-4 thanks to a Visnakovs header at the back post. They soon made it 0-5 as Ikaunieks bagged his second of the night to add further misery to the local side who had been completely lost for the entirety of the 45 minutes.

The game ended with the Latvians winning 0-5 in what was, as we are used to, the standard collapse during the second half. Gibraltar can play a good 45 minutes, but that is it.

My beautiful niece Casey was born with a ventricular septal defect (VSD) which was discovered when she was 5 weeks old. A VSD is a hole between the two ventricles in the heart which often causes problems with incorrect blood flow meaning that the flow to the lungs is too intense. A child with VSD can often become breathless and find feeding difficult as well as find it hard to gain weight as they expend a lot of extra energy breathing.

At 3 years old Casey had surgery at The Royal Brompton Hospital where she underwent a substantial operation to resolve the VSD. The Royal Brompton Hospital is the largest heart and lung specialist in the UK and one of the largest in Europe and is well-known for undertaking some of the most complex surgeries around the world.

I am raising money for The Brompton Fountain. They are a charity that support the children's unit of the hospital by providing vital resources and support services as well as funding pieces of medical equipment and improvements to the hospital facilities.

They do a huge amount of work to support families at very difficult times to which my family are very grateful.

Did you know?

According to Spanish website www.marca.com, the match between Gibraltar and Liechtenstein set a new UEFA record as the smallest combined population of the two national sides playing (69,507). This replaces the current record of (70,055) between Liechtenstein and San Marino. Should Gibraltar play San Marino, a new record would be set (64,936).
