Craig Hensley leads young people in interactive Bugs R Us demonstration at Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area.

Last Saturday, Kendall County Partnership for Parks (KCPP) hosted its first Fam-ily Fun Day at Kreutzberg Canyon Natural Area. By all accounts, it was a huge success, from the scavenger hunt designed to help partici-pants learn about local birds, animals and plants to the interactive butterfly demon-stration led by local experts Cathy Downs and Kip Kip-hart, to grilled “brats on a bun.”

Members of the Hill Coun-try and Alamo chapters of Texas Master Naturalist worked to support this fun, educational event.

Birders were at each of the three nationally acclaimed bird blinds to help people with bird identification, and master naturalists guided

walks to the example of tou-casia fossils.

Tara Randle, Hill Country Master Naturalist and leader of monthly bird census at the natural area, had binoculars on hand and plenty of pas-sion to show families with young children some of the pleasures of birding.

Craig Hensley gave his “Bugs-R-Us” presentation, which was a huge hit.

Faye Jarrell, another master naturalist, provided a wonder-ful flower identification table, Wild About Wildflowers. Young people had a choice of two craft tables, one to make bird feed and one with coloring activities to help in wildlife identification.

“Seeing the glee on the children’s faces as they ran through the park chasing

bugs and butterflies was well worth the long process of vot-ing for parks and then seeing them come to fruition,” Anne Lambert, charter member of KCPP, said.

“I can’t tell you how proud I am to have been a part of yesterday. What an incredible day with incredible people,” new board member Daneshu Clarke said.

“After setting families off on the scavenger hunt, it was great to come up the hill and see kids chasing after bugs,” board member and Master Naturalist Garry Speir said.

Participants had many positive comments, includ-ing “What a special jewel KCPP has in its treasury!” “We had a great time and we will certainly be returning to the park. KCPP has done a super job in preparing for the future.” “I was so happy I went! What a beautiful place! You guys have done an amaz-ing job!” “Our boys found some nice fossils. They are real rock hounds. I almost hated to have to tell them that they couldn’t take fos-sils home. They wanted to take the whole place home in a bag! Everybody seemed to enjoy the fossils and the beautiful setting.”

“I truly do believe our day was a complete success. Plan-ning for next year’s event has already begun,” KCPP board member Kristen Scheller said.
