180 The 47 Ronin Overshadowed?

One of the most 1: infamous/famous/tragic legends in Japanese history is the
story of the 47 Ronin, who gained revenge for their dead lord by killing the man
who forced his death before committing suicide. This 2: 15th/16th/17th Century tale
is enshrined in Japanese culture, but according to reports this week the temple
that has the graves of the 47 dead samurai may soon be overshadowed by a new
3: eight/eighteen/eighty-floor apartment building.

The graves of the deceased samurai are located at the Sengaku Temple in the
Minato Ward of 4: Tokyo/Osaka/Shinjuku. The apartment building complex will
be built right next to the centuries old Sōtō Zen 5: Buddhist/Christian/Shinto
Temple and the building’s plans reveal that the three-century old ronin graves
will be dwarfed by the building’s shadow. The Buddhist monks who pray daily
for the souls of the ronin have started a petition of neighbourhood
6: people/deceased/residents in an attempt to change the new buildings plans.

Kenmyo Muta a priest at the Sengaku Temple when interviewed about the new
building said, “People who come and pray here, including tourists from abroad, can’t
believe why this is being allowed.” Christopher Dimmer an assistant professor at the
University of Tokyo added, “This is 7: sad/happily/tragically common in Japan where
private gain is valued higher than the preservation of a public historical asset.” Professor
Dimmer added that because there are limited laws to protect historical buildings
similar situations are happening all around Japan where there is a desire for new

Hollywood movies in the last 15 years depicting the samurai’s tale of revenge.
The 1998 movie ‘Ronin’ was set in France whilst 2013’s 47 Ronin used some
famous Japanese actors, but was made in Bulgaria and England and starred
American film 9: star/actor/model Keanu Reeves in the leading role.
The company behind the new apartment building Daiichi Realter declined to
