“Summer, summer, summertime. Time to sit back and unwind.” –Will Smith, SummertimeWe made the inaugural trip to the swimming pool, followed by lemonade, followed by food on an outside grill and finished off with a run through the sprinkler. Summer is here, friends. This time of year means longer bike rides, more daylight, more time outside and more iced-cold beverages. Sum-mertime also means picnic—family picnics, church picnics and impromptu it-is-way-too-hot-to-turn-on-the-oven picnics. Summer also means harvests of fresh berries, tomatoes and melons. The Greek myth of Persephone is one of my favorites. In this tale, Persephone ends up with Hades in the underworld. Struck by grief, Persephone’s mother Demeter, who happens to be the god-dess of agriculture, abandons the har-vest, which results in famine through-out the land. Despite their best efforts to return Persephone to the earth and restore harmony, Hades manages to trick her into eating six pomegran-ate seeds. It is then that Persephone is bound to the underworld, but only for six months out of the year. Thus, we have six months of no harvest (fall and winter) and six months of flourishing (spring and summer). I discovered yesterday so many people complaining about the heat. I won-dered if these were the same people complaining about the rain. People were lamenting over forgetting their sunglasses. I wondered if those same people were lamenting over forgetting their umbrellas (although I’ve been told that no true Northwesterner carries an umbrella). It is all about perspective.

My prayer for us this season is that we will embrace all that summer has to offer. It is a time of renewal and revival. We find a time to escape our buildings and connect with the earth and one an-other. My prayer is that we spend time in the garden, around picnic benches and with friends and strangers who are also spending more time outside. As my friend told me after we moved to the Willamette Valley, “enjoy the sum-mer because the rain is always around the corner.” Cheers! Matt

Thank You FCC!I wanted to thank First Christian Church for the use of some of your tables and chairs at the Boy Scout Scout-O-Rama this past Saturday. Our event was successful in showing Scout-ing in a positive light. We even had a few boys join Cub Scouts at the event.

I especially want thank Kevin for his help. We met on Friday to organize what we wanted and he came in early on Saturday to help us get the tables and chairs. We ended up needing a couple more tables and he had just left the Church but graciously came back when I called him. And then he was back at 5:00 p.m. to let us put every-thing back. Definitely going beyond to help us have a successful event.

Again, thank you very much for letting us use your facilities.

This June we have an exciting line-up of Sundays as school finishes and the summer begins. On June 7 we focused on two essential Jesus sayings: “Love Your Enemies” and the “Eye for an eye” passage. Then on the following Sunday June 14 we will celebrate pro-motion Sunday in church; honoring our graduates, recognizing kids who are being promoted to a new class, and celebrating with everyone as we finish up the school year. That Sunday in worship we will have a slide show featuring photos from the whole year, and Matt will recognize all the children in our Sunday School community. The next Sunday will be our first Sunday with three classes instead of two. The “middle” class (grades 2nd-5th) will be meeting in their new room on the third floor for the first time with their teacher Leah Gordon. The last Sunday of June will be an intergenerational

Sunday with kids staying in worship.

Picnics in the Park!Every Wednesday during the summer, starting June 17, we have an all-comers picnic at Willamette Park. Bring your own dinner or more to share. We meet up at some picnic tables at 6:00 p.m. There is always an activity for the kids and adults to play. Last year we played disc golf, croquet, kubb, water balloons, just to name a few. This is a fun, informal fellowship time. Also, there is a group who rides bikes most

Wednesdays out to the park. If you are interested in joining this group ride please contact Emily or Matt and we can figure out the best way to include you in the route!

Congratulations Graduates!Tom Clark Tom is Dan and Chris Williams son in law, Amy’s husband and Abraham’s papa. He is graduating from OSU with a degree in Forest Engineering. After graduation he has a job waiting for him with Campbell Global in of Gearhart, OR.

  • What’s Happening…Choir’s End-of-Year Celebration: Grease Sing-a-Long and LunchOn June 14, directly after Sunday service lunch will be served and the sing-along will commence. Come join us as we sing along to Grease. There will be some re-tired (or just tired) “Pink Ladies” to lead the singing. Wear a Fifties “get-up” and stay for as little or as long as you like. You are the one we want...(to see there)!
