Grand Knights Report Fr. Paul J.F. Wattson Council 8919 would like to send out a big welcome to Fr. Rob Rocheleau as our new Parish priest and now, chaplain for our council. Welcome Fr. Rob, we are so happy to have you with us. Wishing all brother knights and parishioners, Fr. Rob and church staff a Happy Easter from me and my family. God Bless all of you. Congratulations to Vincente and Sandra Buglisi and their three children for being chosen Family of the Month for March 2014. Thank-you Vincente, Sandra and kids for all you do in our church community. It is nice to see that all of your family in one way or another participates in church and community events. You are role models and an inspiration to all of us. God bless all of you! On Friday, February 7 was the Annual Substance Abuse Poster Contest Awards night in the Family Centre. Eduardo Aguilar and his beautiful wife Angeline hosted the event. This event featured a guest speaker RCMP Constable Wally Silver whom talked about drugs and alcohol and the effect it has on our society. Constable Silver was very informative he used a slide show and props to explain the negative effects substance abuse can have on a person. Trophies and medallions were presented to first, second and third place winners from both participating schools: L.A. Desmarais and H.J. Lassaline. Certificates of Appreciation were given to all participants at their respective schools on the following day. Afterwards there were some light snacks and refreshments. Thank you, Greg MacDonald and Mike McLellan for serving the drinks and snacks. Thank you Eduardo and Angeline Aguilar for all you do to make this program run smoothly. Congratulations to Brother Eugene Trepanier and his granddaughter, Cecilia Trepanier who attends L.A. Desmarais on winning first place for the girls. Congratulations also to Brother Keith Campbell and his granddaughter, Alyssa Campbell for first place in her category. On Saturday February 22 was the 27th Anniversary for Knights of Columbus Sacred Heart Council in Lasalle. Past Grand Knight Art Huggins and his beautiful wife Sylvia accompanied myself and my wife Angelina to the Anniversary Banquet that evening. We were greeted by their Grand Knight, Brian Moore and Deputy Grand Knight, Earl Laframboise. They both expressed their appreciation and happiness for Council 8919 in being part of their big event. After a wonderful dinner, some speeches were read. First was Fr. Tom Blondin who was very funny in his opening statement. He is surely a great joke teller. Fr. gave his blessing to everyone in the hall and mentioned how happy he was to be the new priest there. Fr. Tom also praised the Knights of Columbus for all they do for the parish and community. He also expressed that he is very happy to be a part of this organization. The next speaker was former Master Jim Farrand. He spoke about how Sacred Heart Council started 27 years ago and what a task it was. Mr. Farrand mentioned how our very own Bob Cayea helped start their council. Bob was involved with some recruiting and went to Toronto to register the Council. Now here we are 27 years later celebrating with them. Thank you, Mr. Farrand for sharing your stories. Deputy Grand Knights Report Greeting Brother Knights, We are now into Lent, a time set aside time for reflection on Jesus Christ, his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death, burial and resurrection. In the weeks ahead, we will a number of spiritual days: Palm Sunday (Passion Sunday): The celebration of Jesus entry into Jerusalem prior to his arrest. As noted in scripture, people lay palms on the road before the donkey Jesus road into Jerusalem. We observe this day by distributing palms and reading aloud the Passion of the Lord, during mass. Triduum : The Great Three Days: Beginning with the Mass of the Lords Supper on Holy Thursday, Celebrating the Passion of our Lord on Good Friday, and concluding with the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday. Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday): The celebration of the Last Supper which includes the washing of the feet of the Apostles. Good Friday: The day our Lord was arrested, tried and crucified for our sins. Holy Saturday: The day the faithful wait at the Lord’s tomb, reflecting on his Passion, death and decent into hell. As Mary held vigil, we too wait with her. This prayerful symbolic waiting has been called the “Ora della Madre” or “Hour of the Mother”. Easter Sunday: The Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ, his triumph over death, leading us to ever- lasting life. As with each of the reports within this newsletter, it is obvious our council has again been quite active. In addition to those mentioned by our Grand Knight, Directors and Chairs, I would like to mention the following Events which occurred during the past two months, and those looking ahead: On February 15/16 we held our annual Maternity and Baby Shower in conjunction with the Catholics Women’s League of Our Lady of the Atonement. All donations of clothing, infant needs and monies were presented to Birthright of Windsor. This year money donations amounted to $510.00. Thanks to Deanna Leveque (CWL President) and Brother Tom Becksmith for their hard work and devotion to this program this year. On Sunday March 16 we welcomed 2 new Brother Knights to Council 8919, having completed their 1st and 2nd

Degrees at St. Gregory’s. Welcome Brothers Patrick Caulfield and Gavino Seu. Looking ahead we have a number of events coming up: On March 30 Francis J. Clarke Council 5350 in Harrow will be holding a combined 2nd and 3rd Degree. Any 1st

or 2nd Degree Brother who is available on this date and is interested in advancing their degree’s, please contact Brother Greg MacDonald, Mike MacLellan or Grand Knight Sam DeRose, to get registered and receive all the details. We are closing in on the submission deadline for the Knights of Columbus Bursaries Applications. If you, your wife, child or grandchild will be entering the first year to a full time University or College, you may qualify. Please visit the following website to get further details and instruction on submission, or speak to one of the current or past executive members to assist in obtaining an application: http://www.ontariokofc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/Bursary_English.pdf In April / May we will begin accepting nominations for candidates for the 2014/2015 Council Executive. If you have considered running for a position, or would like to learn more about what a position on the executive en- tails, please speak to our nominations chair Allen Topliffe, or any current member of the executive or plan on attending the General Meetings in the upcoming months to have your name added to the ballots. This past month, our parish was honoured to have Fr. Phillip Chircop with us to celebrate the Parish Mission. I was fortunate enough to attend on the last evening, and one comment he made stuck with me. It dealt with giving up one’s life to our faith. He prefaced this, by saying, “... what is life, time – and how can we give our lives to our faith, by the giving of our time.” He went on to say we should set aside time for our families, for our church and in servitude. In this thought I will again invite each of you to consider giving of yourselves in any capacity you are able, whether it be in one of the ministries or volunteer organizations within the parish, or one of vast programs our Knights of Columbus council is also committed to. Many of our programs are still in need of new members and individuals who may be interested in becoming a Director or Chairman. If you would like lead or just join a current program, or have an idea for a prospective new program, please do not hesitate contact an executive member to discuss. Vivat Jesus, Dan Pergolesi, DKG.

LIFE MATTERS… Andrew J. Despins, Field Agent

We Stand Strong On Ethical Ground

Some people believe that ethics in business is a contradiction in terms. They think that in order to be profitable, a company and its leaders must abandon morality and embrace the dark, greedy side that they see so often in the news and in movies.. At the Knights of Columbus, we know this isn’t true. A business can be both ethical and successful. We are. As a Catholic organization, we understand the value and importance of our core beliefs and the original mission of Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney. In fact, much of the strength and financial security we provide to members and their families can be attributed to our ethical, moral standards.

More than 96 percent of Knights who buy our life insurance keep it, year in and year out. The Order takes this commitment to our members very seriously. This means carefully planning when it comes time to invest. Our professional staff researches all transactions to insure that they fall in line with Catholic values. If a transaction makes them uncomfortable, they don’t make it.

“We exclude any company engaged in activity that conflicts with Catholic moral teaching: companies directly involved in abortion, contraception, human cloning, embryonic stem cell research, for-profit health care that pays for any of these, or pornography,” said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. “There are many companies in the pharmaceutical and communications industries that would undoubtedly provide excellent returns for us, but which are not in our portfolio because they engage in research and development or programming in ways that violate the sanctity or dignity of human life.”

In the end, the Knights of Columbus investment strategy is motivated by morality, not money. Yet, each year we remain profitable, increase our assets and stay dedicated to this vision that will keep the Order financially sound for generations to come. “Faithful Catholics have choices when buying life insurance,” said the Supreme Knight. “But they know that at the Knights of Columbus their policy is supplied by an insurer that shares their moral and ethical values and is guided in all of its investment and sales practices by those values.”
