FINISHED INTERIOR STAIRS UP TO 48” WIDE

EZ Stairs eliminates the need for custom fitting risers, treads and skirt boards which is time consuming and expensive. EZ Stairs can be completed in a fraction of the time required for traditional stairs using semi-skilled labor.

THE DIFFERENCE

TRADITIONAL STAIRS EZ STAIRS

• Traditional stringers follow the contour of the studworks which is often warped.• Studwork causes the skirt board to be uneven, neither straight or plumb.• Valuable time is spent custom fitting each rise and tread to the uneven skirt board.• Usually 3 to 4 cut stringers used requiring 96 to 126 cuts for a full flight.• Center stringers are usually un-supported down the length of the stair causing treads to flex.• Traditional stairs squeak as a result of flexing.• Stringers are rarely all cut the same causing alignment problems which the finish crews must correct.• High degree of skill required due to custom fitting.

• EZ Stairs stringers can be set straight, correct-ing the studwork. • The EZ Stairs stringer is also the skirt board which is automatically set straight and plumb when the risers are attached.• No custom fitting- rise and tread lengths are pre-cut with square cut ends.• Only two stringers required, 6 cuts total.• EZ Stairs risers are structural – carrying the load across the stair like joists, eliminating flex and squeaks.• No center stringers, therefore, no alignment problems.• No custom fitting means a short learning curve using semi skilled labor.

Studwork naturallywarps.

Tread and riser ends require custom fitting.

Center stringers normally un-supported causing squeaks.

Risers carry load across stair act-ing like joists which straightens stringers.

EZ Stair stringers help straighten stud-work.

No custom fit-ting for riser and tread ends.

SETTING THE ADJUSTABLE STRINGERS

Two oak or pine stringer members are used with patented, self adjusting brackets to form a stringer in minutes. When the stringer members are brought together they form one solid continuous stringer with a decorative bead along its center.

THE BRACKETS DO THE WORK

[A] The brackets are positioned using spacers and attached with pivot screws.

[B]

The spacers are removed and the brackets are rotated to form the exact custom rise and run. Fixing screws are added to the bottom stringer only.

[C]

Pivot screws are removed from the top string-er member. The two members are brought together, closing the gap and the remaining screws are inserted.

[D]

The end cuts are made and the stringers are ready to install. When cutting, allow for any top riser thickness at the header or finished floor thickness top or bottom.

STAIR INSTALLATION

EZ Stairs may be pre-assembled and set in position or built in place. Stringers, risers and treads may be built from solid finished material such as oak, eliminating much of the trim work. Unfinished materi-als may also be used and trimmed out later.

When building in place, the following steps are suggested:

1. Set stringers in position against studwork and header. Do not attach to header at this time.

2. Pre-cut all risers and attach to brackets. Clamp across stair if necessary to assure riser ends are in full contact with stringer before inserting screws. NOTE: If some studs are warping inwards towards the stair, force out with a 2 x 4 cut to the appropriate length.

3. Pre-cut treads 1/32” shorter than risers. Install treads from bottom up for rise up to 7 1/4”, attach with 2 1/2” finish nails every 6” and one 3/4” #8 screw through bracket into tread (see diagram below).NOTE: A right angle drill is useful for inserting the 3/4” screws.

For rise over 71/4” rip riser to height for installation between treads. Attach back of tread with 21/2” #8 screws every 9” and front of tread with 2 1/2” finished nails every 6” (see diagram above). Rise and tread may be pre-assembled before installation. Insert the 2 1/2” #8 screws through the tread into the bottom of the riser to form one single “L” shaped piece and install as one unit. Make sure that top of riser is aligned with top flange of bracket before attaching to bracket with screws.

4. Attach 2 x 4 back tread support for top tread against header between stringers and install top tread. Attach stringers to header.

5. Install the sheet rock to run against the top of the stringer and finish with appropriate molding. For open sided stringers cap with top molding, either channeled or plain for baluster attachment.

Alternative for temporary risers & tread during construction:

3/4” plywood risers and treads may be used during construction. Joints should be glued and nailed with 21/2”- 8d common nails every 6”. After construction face the rise with 1/8” oak and top the tread with 5/4 finished material. When making stringer end cuts, allow for the additional thick-ness of the finished riser and tread material.
