Dolce&Gabbana and Cathedral angel

D&G  traveled  to  mosaic  decorated  churches  across  the  Italian  isle:  to  Cefalu  Cathedral,  the  Pala:ne  Chapel,  La  Martorana,  and  the  Duomo  Monreale.  These  Byzan:ne  mosaics  were  made  by  ar:sans  around  the  years  1100-‐1200,  during  the  reigns  of  Sicilian  Kings  Roger  II  and  William  II.

Dolce  &  Gabbana  sampled  liberally  from  many  areas  of  the  church  including  royal  adornment  (crowns,  jewelry),  Clergy  vestments,  ceremonial  instruments  (accessories,  gilt  things),  gold  ornament  in  general,  and  the  mosaic  stones  themselves.

John Everett Millais and Jean-Charles De

Castelbajac

John  EvereS  Millais  was  one  of  the  founders  of  the  Pre-‐Raphaelite  Brotherhood,  which  was  part  of  the  quaSrocento  art  period  (or  the  15th  century  Italian  art).  Shakespeare  was  one  of  the  basic  inspira:ons;  that  is  why  Millais  depicted  “Ophelia”,  a  tragic  figure  from  Hamlet  in  his  pain:ng,  in  1851-‐52.  Jean-‐Charles  De  Castelbajac’s  drew  inspira:on  from  the  pain:ng  in  his  Fall-‐Winter  2013/2014  collec:on.

Marni and Brian Rea

During  his  career,  Brian  Rea  has  been  the  Art  Director  for  The  New  York  Times  Op-‐Ed  page,  he’s  created  pieces  for  book  jackets  and  film  posters,  as  well  as  being  a  featured  ar:st  in  magazines  including  Time  and  The  Atlan:c  Monthly.        “Marni  has  been  collabora:ng  with  ar:sts  the  last  few  years  –  Kim  Gordon,  Gary  Hume,  Peter  Blake  among  others.  When  they  saw  my  drawings  for  the  “Modern  Love”  column  in  The  New  York  Times,  they  reached  out”.

Robert Campin and Alexander McQueen

Flemish  painter  Robert  Campinhas  created  “The  Thief  to  the  Leg  of  Christ”,  in  1430.  Alexander  McQueen  printed  Campin’s  pain:ng  of  the  crucifixion  on  a  jacket,  in  his  Fall-‐Winter  2009  collec:on,  by  making  it  a  kind  of  patchwork.

Maripol x Marc Jacobs With  friends  such  as  Andy  Warhol  and  Keith  Haring,  French  born  ar:st/stylist/designer  Maripol  has  been  surrounded  by  art  for  most  her  life.  She  made  waves  on  the  New  York  City  scene  back  in  80s  as  she  grabbed  the  art  world  by  it's  horns.  The  former  art  director  of  Fiorucci  created  some  of  the  most  iconic  jewelry  of  that  :me,  and  is  notably  the  woman  behind  Madonna's  iconic  "Like  A  Virgin"  look  in  the  80s.  In  2010,  Maripol  collaborated  with  Marc  Jacobs  on  a  line  of  t-‐shirts  and  jewelry  inspired  by  the  collec:ons  she  created  back  in  the  80s.

Gustav Klimt and L’Wren Scott

Gustav  Klimt  is  a  well-‐known  “Art  nouveau”  ar:st.  In  his  pain:ngs  -‐  he  used  a  lot  of  golden-‐leaf,  kaleidoscopic  kind  of  prints  and  for  thi  -‐  he  became  inspira:on  for  many  other  ar:sts.  L’Wren  ScoS,  revealed  that  he  had  “a  gold  moment”  in  his  Fall-‐Winter  2013/2014  collec:on,  looking  to  Gustav  Klimt’s  portrait  for  inspira:on.

Cynthia Rowley and Damien Hirst

Inspira:on  for  this  Cynthia  Rowley  dress  came  from  Olaf  Breuning  recent  exhibi:on  :tled  "Art  Freaks."  The  exhibit  featured  photographs  of  male  and  female  nudes  painted  in  the  style  of  defining  works  of  art  form  the  20th  century.  One  such  work  was  the  "Damien"  nude  figure  which  featured  ar:st  Damien  Hirst'  signature  spots  which  Rowley  turned  into  a  dress.    The  dress  is  exclusively  sold  at  Parisian  bou:que  ColeSe.

Van Gogh and Rodarte

The  “Vase  with  12  sunflowers”  is  one  of  the  most  known  artworks,  which  was  created  by  Van  Gogh,  in  1888.  Rodarte  was  inspired  by  the  vivid  colors  of  the  pain:ng,  giving  in  its  Spring-‐Summer  2012  collec:on  a  unique  touch.
