Introduction:

The aim of the presentation is about to describe and analysis of a

successful and unsuccessful garments. For that purpose, we have selected some

designs from different designer’s collection. After analysing those designs, our group

find some of them designs are successful and some are unsuccessful. At the end of

assignment, we recommend how to make that unsuccessful design to a successful

design, where the design elements and the principals are working equally.

Elements:Design elements describe fundamental ideas about the practice of

good visual design that are assumed to be the basis of all intentional visual design

strategies.

Basic elements are:•Colour

•Line

•Dot

•Shape

•Space

•Texture•Form

•Value

Color:

Color is seen either by the way light reflects off a surface, or in colored light

sources. Color and particularly contrasting color is also used to draw the attention to

a particular part of the image. There are primary colors, secondary colors,

and tertiary colors. Complementary colors are colors that are opposite to each other

on the color wheel.

Line:

Line is the basic element that refers to the continuous movement of a point

along a surface, such as by a pencil or brush. Every line has length, thickness, and

direction. There are curved, horizontal, vertical, diagonal, zigzag, wavy, parallel,

dash, and dotted lines.

Dot:

It will start from centre with a pencil or gel pen .

Shape

A shape is defined as an area that stands out from the space next to or

around it due to a defined or implied boundary, or because of differences of value,

color, or texture. Shapes can also show perspective by overlapping. They can be

geometric or organic.

Texture

Texture is perceived surface quality. In art, there are two types of texture:

tactile and implied. Tactile texture (real texture) is the way the surface of an object

actually feels. Examples of this include sandpaper, cotton balls, tree bark, puppy fur,

etc. Implied texture is the way the surface of an object looks like it feels.

Form

Form is any three dimensional object. Form can be measured, from top to

bottom (height), side to side (width), and from back to front (depth). Form is also

defined by light and dark. There are two types of form, geometric (man-made) and

natural (organic form).

Value

Value is an element of art that refers to the relationship between light and

dark on a surface or object and also helps with Form. It gives objects depth and

perception. Value is also referred to as tone.

Principals of design:

These principles, which may overlap, are used in all visual design fields,

including graphic design, industrial design, architecture and fine art.

Design is the organized arrangement of one or more elements and principles (e.g.

line color or texture) for a purpose. The principles of design are as varied as attitudes regarding modern design. They

differ both between the schools of thought that influence design, and between

individual practicing designers. This are-

• Space

• Unity

• Emphasis /Focal Point

• Balance

• Proportion /Scale

• Contrast

• Movement

• Rhythm/Pattern

• Variety

• Harmony

(length and width), such as a floor, or it may have three dimensions (length,

width, and height). Space includes the background, foreground and middle

ground.

Unity

• Repetition: using the same element over and over

• Continuation

• Closure

Emphasis /Focal Point

• Contrast: Putting opposites together

• Isolation

• Placement

•  Absence of focal point

This collection is from

Mansha Winter/Spring

dress we see the vertical

style line looks taller andthe color is horizontal also.

Here pink and violate color

is vibrant - so youthful.

Red and Golden‟s

combination looks

gorgeous also. This suit isfor posh and young girls. It

has symmetrical balance

which has an equal volume

and effect. In the shoulder's

youth and the motif„s brocade looks elegant.

International:

This collection is from Elie

Saab Spring 2011 Couture gown.

Dressed in a red lace and silk chiffon. It is skinny cocktail dress. In upper

torso it has horizontal line and also

with wrapped fabric created the bust

volume. Chiffon makes a flowing

mood on it. This color is red (romantic

& enthusiasm). Here waist band in thedress separate from the lower torso. It

looks hour glass silhouette that makes

feminine impression that makes

 balance and proportion. Low neckline

emphasis and soft texture makes equal

volume and an equal effect.

Cocktail dress:Though total dress is

asymmetric, still the half portion (red)

which was drawn to ground couldn'tenhance any aesthetic value. In fact it was

unnecessary and gave an imbalanced look.

Red is a warm color which already got

emphasis a lot as rest half  – black, is a

neutral color. So imposing a diagonal

golden line on red is also unnecessary. However, asymmetric neckline got the 1st

emphasis; then visually, red color. SO,

imposing golden line on red seems

overdone. So, we can easily understand, this

design is unsuccessful.

Recommendation:

We can make the dress a successfully

designed with a little bit manipulation.

If we cut off the excess red portion &

make even hemline, it‟ll looks better. As

red portion is already very loud; so if

we impose the golden line on black

portion, it‟ll get a dynamic impression. And the emphasis will be balanced as

well.

Thus, we can make the dress successful

in designed.

Sports wear:In this picture we see

“Roger Federer” a long tennis player,

wearing a military-style jacket during2009 Wimbledon session. It was a

promotion for the sport brand “Nike”.

But it is not sport friendly attire at all. In

fact we don‟t see him in such code of

costume in tennis court. So this design

was totally unsuccessful for a sportswear. But if he used this jacket as an

occasionally purpose then it‟ll be

successful.

Recommendation:

However according to this picture style of

his V-neck or Polo-style shirts, containing

cotton blended with spandex along with

shorts are seen is best for sports wear. So

according to this picture it‟ll be a successfuldesign for sports wear.
