FAROMany people say that Faro – the capital of the Algarve – islocated on Europe’s most scenic coast. Here beautiful, longsandy beaches stretch away into the distance, framed byrocks on either side.

THE CITY #THECITY#
Faro’s old town is not so old (it was burneddown by English troops in 1596, laterrebuilt, and then destroyed by theearthquake of 1755), but beautiful andpedestrian-friendly. Next to the citadel’sring-wall is the small harbour from wherethe newer and livelier town stretches awayto the north and east.
The gardens next to the harbour, JardimManuel Bivar, are a good starting point. Atthe upper end the city’s main shoppingarea begins – a little network of pedestrianstreets with all kind of shops, cafés andrestaurants. From here, going north youcome to some of Faro’s famous churches –for example, Igreja do Carmo – or goingnorth-west via the Largo 25 de Abrilroundabout you arrive at the fresh producemarket. Going straight to the west, youwill eventually reach the slightly uphillAvenida 5 de Outubro, which ends in frontof Faro’s magnificent Liceu (grammarschool). Here you are rewarded with abroad vista of Faro, the wetlands of RiaFormosa and the sea.

Faro CathedralFrom outside, Faro’s cathedral is low andsquat, a mixture of Renaissance andBaroque as a result of protractedrenovations and additions following thedevastation of war and naturalcatastrophes. The interior is equally mixedbut with interesting features, including alarge organ from the 18th century withChinoiserie decoration.
Address: Largo da Sé
Igreja Do CarmoOf Faro’s churches, this Baroque broadsideis the most popular, but not so much for itsfantastically over-elaborate, gold-leafladen interior as for its Capela dos Ossos, a“bone chapel” which was added in 1816and which is entirely decorated with theskeletons of monks.
