    Introduction

The church of St Leonard, Farleigh Hungerford A notice in the porch of the church gives a brief history of the building: The church was built during the reign of Henry VI by Walter, Lord Hungerford, Knight of the Garter, to replace the village’s former parish church, which he had appropriated as his private chapel within nearby Farleigh Castle. It was consecrated on November 6th 1443, St Leonard’s Day, and is a good, if simple, example of the perpendicular style. Quite remarkably it has undergone almost no structural alteration whatsoever since that date, despite some restoration work in 1856.

The roofs of both porch and chancel are of the wagon-head variety, more common in Devon and Cornwall than locally, and both have finely carved bosses, that in the porch featuring 3 interlinked sickles, one of the Hungerford Family’s heraldic badges. The nave roof has similar decoration, assumed to date from 1856. The oak chairs in the sanctuary are 17th century and came from the castle chapel, while the pulpit and altar rail are early 19th century. The ironwork of the chancel gates is worthy of

note, but was reduced in height during the 20th century. The font is modern, and replace ne now in the castle chapel, the history of which is uncertain. It may have come from the church which preceded the castle chapel, or from the long destroyed church at Rowley, just over the river at the bottom of the hill.

Over the doorway of the porch is a Latin inscription, though to come from the earlier church, referring to St. Leonard’s position as patron saint of the imprisoned.

The church’s ancient glass is one of its joys, containing fragments of windows from the pre-1443 church. IN the centre light the east widow depicts St Leonard in bishop’s vestments. With a cosier in his left hand, and prisoners’ manacles in his right. St Christopher, patron saint of travellers, occupies the left light, carrying the infant Christ on his shoulders. In the right are a female saint and a child, said to be St Anne and the Blessed Virgin.

The window also contains some small panels of later foreign, probably Flemish, glass, including a representation of the Day of Judgement and an incident from St Leonard’s life when a hunted deer fled to him for protection.

In the south-west window of the chancel is a shield of arms, described in heraldic terms thus:-

“Quarterly 1st and 4th Heytesbury, 2nd and 3rd Hungerford, impaling 1st and 4th Zouche, 2nd St Maur quartering Lovell and 3rd Cantelupe”

These were the arms of Sir Edward Hungerford (d. 1521) and his wife Jane Zouche, and came from a cottage in Wellow.

On the north side of the nave, in the window nearest the pulpit, is a soldier’s head, thought to be that of Sir Thomas Hungerford, Speaker of the House of Commons in its earliest manifestation, who purchased Farleigh, appended his name to the village, and died in 1398.

St Leonard’s boasts a fine set of bells, the most recent of which was commissioned to celebrate the millennium.

The burial register 1674-1758 notes the death of various parishioners without being explicit about the burial. Also about 1720: I have searched this Register & made an enquiry amongst ye inhabitants of this parish & find a neglect for several years in ye Register: since ye time this parish has been under my care which is from . . . 1717 I have set down an account of all Birth Marriages & Burials Roch: White Rectr

While the register has a series of entries from 1718-1726, there is then a gap to 1736. In the burial register 1759-1812 is: Memorandum. The Roman villa in the Temple Field in this Parish was opened by the Revd John Skinner, & the Rector, in the years 1822. It extended from North to South nearly; 55 yards long by 27½ broad. B. Richardson Rector N.B. This villa commanded Iford, & had a full view of another villa, in the same Parish of Farley, which commanded Stowford.

In the register is also a count of the baptisms, burials and marriage for the period 1811-1823 ‘answers to the act of 1st George 4th for taking the population on the 28th May 1821’. This has:

From Munk’s Roll of the Lives of the Fellows of the Royal College of Physicians Vol II, p412:

Edward Fryer, M.D., was born at Frome in Somersetshire in 1761, and educated at the grammar school of that town; on leaving which he was placed with a medical practitioner in Wiltshire. He then spent some time at the London hospitals, and went thence to Edinburgh, and eventually to Leyden, where he proceeded doctor of medicine 29th January, 1785 (D.M.I. de Vitâ Animantium et Vegetantium). After travelling for some years upon the continent, he returned to England, and settled in London. He was admitted a Licentiate of the College of Physicians 30th September, 1790. Dr. Fryer, who held the appointment of physician to the duke of Sussex, died in Upper Charlotte-street, on the 9th January, 1826, in the sixty-fourth year of his age. " Distinguished ability, various and extensive knowledge, strict probity and unsullied honour, united with the most prompt, ardent, independent, and generous feelings, adorned by the most engaging and gentlemanly manners, combined to render him beloved and admired by all who knew him." . . .

The death notice for John Spencer Hobhouse on 11 Jan 2010 has:

John Spencer Hobhouse, who died on Christmas Eve 2009 aged 99, was responsible for a major change in animal policies after the Second World War which saved the lives of many stray animals. The decorated war veteran - one of only five air gunners to be awarded the Air Force Cross during World War Two for bravery and skills - began campaigning for animals after he and his wife Mary 'adopted' a Welsh collie called Sewin, which had been owned by a wing commander who died in action, and rescued another dog called Mouse, who was going to be destroyed. They moved to Bath and joined the committee of the city's RSPCA branch in 1948, with Mr Hobhouse becoming the chairman the following year. He was able to convince the city council that it could save money by sending strays to the charity's kennels instead of paying a vet to put animals down. After three years as chairman of the Bath branch, he became convinced that the Bath no destruction policy should be rolled out nationwide. He was elected to the RSPCA's national council in 1955 and started the long battle to achieve this, forming a Homeless Animals Committee, which he also chaired. This committee persuaded the RSPCA council to spend the £100,000 necessary to build modern kennels across the UK. Within a year these new kennels were saving the lives of 10,000 dogs that would otherwise have been destroyed. In 1966 he became the chairman of the RSPCA council, and was kept busy visiting the main RSPCA branches, and travelling to London twice a week. In his spare time he became interested in horse racing and bought a racehorse. At a race in 1982, Mr Hobhouse won £150,000, which he used to set up the Hobhouse Animal Trust to help small animals. He stepped down as national chairman in 1972 and then threw himself into more work at the Bath Cats and Dogs Home. In 1995, the home received three legacies totalling £500,000, which enabled new buildings to be built. Mr Hobhouse was born at Oakhill, near Shepton Mallet in 1910 and educated at Old Malthouse School in Langton Matravers, before moving to Eton College in 1923, and then Christ Church College, Oxford, in 1929. After leaving university, he worked in the insurance industry in Scotland and Bristol before his war service. His wife died before him and he was survived by a niece.
