Parade PreviewThe tradition of huge fun and spirited, colorful patriotism established 22 years ago by The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade continues in 2016. Taking place Monday, July 4 at 9 a.m. in The Trails Village of Summerlin, the Patriotic Parade will debut more than a dozen new entries and bring the total number of parade units to more than 60.

The Patriotic Parade is recognized for its unique and dazzling parade displays− and this year is no exception. New fl oats debuting in 2016 include “The Fourth Awakens—A Tribute to Star Wars,“ “Ferris Bueller’s Independence Day Off ,” and “Dream Big with the Princesses” featuring popular princesses on a spinning music box. Also joining the lineup are new Macy’s style giant infl atable balloons “Pac Man” and “Crush” from Finding Dory, along with children’s character mascots inspired by popular fi lms and books.

“These new additions comprise an all-star cast of beloved and popular characters that appeal to the kid in all of us,” said Lezlie Barnson-DeNardin, parade organizer and community relations director for The Summerlin Council. “What’s a parade without superstars from history, pop culture, cartoons, games, books, and movies,” she said.

Parade favorites such as “An All Star Salute to the Military,” “Aladdin’s Magic Carpet,” and “The Indiana Jones Experience,” as well as bands, performing art groups and the iconic “American Eagle” giant infl atable balloon, will make return appearances this year. And, of course, the parade will feature its original entry “Patriotic Peddlers” where young Summerlin residents decorate their bikes and cycle the parade route kicking-off the annual event

“We showcase Summerlin’s culture and engage the community on a broad level by providing entertainment for kids as well as adults,” said Barnson-DeN ardin. “We make an eff ort to include only the most creative and festive fl oat ideas and, as the parade gets bigger and bigger, we continue to focus on making it a true refl ection of our community while honoring and celebrating our country.”

There is never a shortage of red, white, and blue at The Summerlin Council Patriotic Parade. So be sure to don your stars and stripes and join us for this Independence Day extravaganza.

PAR ADE 101

School may be out for summer, but “Parade 101” is now in session! To help ensure your best parade experience possible, please take note of these helpful event hints:

• Three Announcers Tents are located along the route (see parade map to the left). These areas feature additional entertainment elements and amplifi ed sound for spectators’ enjoyment.

• Parking is limited the day of the parade. Carpool with friends, bike or even walk to the parade.

• Many spectators stake their viewing location along the route prior to the offi cial parade start time. Be sure to arrive early to identify a great spot to view the event.

• The parade route is lined with grass so bring a chair, open an umbrella or lay out a blanket to enjoy the parade comfortably.

• Don’t forget it’s hot out there! To beat the heat, drink plenty of water (one cup every 15-20 minutes) even if you don’t feel thirsty, wear protective clothing and slather on sunscreen.

• Please be responsible with your children and keep them safe during the parade. Do not allow kids—or kids at heart—to enter the parade route and approach entries during the event.

• Wear red, white, and blue to celebrate America and display your patriotism. Consider bringing a few decorations to make your viewing location extra-spirited!
