TRANSCRIPT
Parenting is a difficult job and every family has questions and challenges from time to time. When children are experiencing difficulties in their daily lives, reading about characters with similar problems can help them to cope.
Sharing books or stories with children that reflect difficult experiences or feelings they may face can be helpful for several reasons:
• Stories can be a way of introducing and talking about difficult subjects in a natural, safe way.
• Stories can put things into words that enable a child to make sense of their own life situation and experiences.
• Stories can put experiences and feelings at a distance, which can make it easier to think about things and remove the focus from the child. It is often easier for a child to talk about what someone else might feel rather than talk about their own feelings, especially when they may not be ready or able to do this.
• Stories that reflect the experiences and feelings of the child can often reassure them that they are not alone.

Sharing books with your child is a wonderful way to help them learn and develop. It is also an ideal way to share a cuddle at the same time!
• Find a quiet place. Turn off the TV or radio so there are no distractions.
• As well as reading the story, talk about the pictures. If there is a picture of an older person, talk about someone you know that is older.
• Give your child time to respond to what you have been saying.
• For young children, it’s recommended that you don’t read for long periods of time; little and often is better.
• It is good to share favourite books again and again. Repetition helps children to understand and remember what they have read.
• Use the library resources; as well as books children can borrow DVDs and audio books and take part in a range of activities that help with literacy and social skills.
You are never too young to join the library. It is fun and it is free!
If you can’t find the book you are looking for, you can always ask a member of staff to help you find it or recommend something similar.
NOTE: The age ranges noted are approximate and designed as a guide only.
