'Taking Ownership' In The Life Of A TempWorkWise Advice™ by Mildred L. Culp

T he rush to temporary agencies won’t stop as the recession grinds on.

People may feel more anxious than ever, having survived open-ended unemployment, underemployment and partial employment. How can they adjust to the uncertainties of temporary work? For many, the temp-to-perm dream might be just that as businesses ramp up a temporary workforce.‘HESITATION’ Some people have reservationsabout temping. Stacey Snodgrass certainly did. She’d been away from the workplace for a year to raise her son and wanted to go back full-time. “I started applying and wasn’t having a lot of luck getting response,” she says. “My aunt told me to go to Express, now Express Employment Professionals in Bellingham, because my cousin had found a job through them. I was uncertain about what a staffing service was and what it could do for me. “I applied,” she continues. “No response. Then I called them. I had an interview that day. By that afternoon they called and offered me a job at the front desk to work as a temp for a week.” However, a week wasn’t what she’d had in mind. She had no idea how that could help her reach her objective, but this was the only offer on the table. Snodgrass reasoned with herself that “I wanted something, and I wanted them to help them find something permanent.” She signed on for the week. At the end, she says, “I asked if they wanted me back.” Over the next three weeks, either she asked them or they volunteered that they wanted her to continue. Then came an offer as receptionist. “It felt

like a really good fit for me,” she comments. Within five months, a staffing consultant created an opening by leaving. The company offered the job to her. She agreed. In about two years, Express needed an office manager. She filled it.. The owner, who was developing franchises in British Columbia, subsequently hired her to travel there and help with six franchise sales and first-year transitions. A change in ownership in the Bellingham office presented a potential hitch, but that transition went smoothly. Now the office manager/developer representative, Snodgrass has worked there 14 years.

Tina Chen, director of Operations at Carlisle Staffing Ltd., in Westmont, Ill., observes another form of uncertainty, “pay range hesitation,” among upper-level workers who fear that when they’re placed, their temp positions won’t reflect their high-earning skills. They also worry about their resumes if assignments don’t work out. “Your resume doesn’t get docked,” she says, because you’re still with the agency. Chen advises viewing temporary work this way: “Take away the ‘temp’ title. Hours aren’t shorter. The job isn’t any easier. The workload isn’t any lighter. You’re working as a full-time employee at a company you would have sought

full-time employment with. The only difference is that you’re being paid through an agency.”AGENCY AS ORGANIZATIONPeter Cappelli, a professor of Management and director of the Wharton Center for Human Resources at Philadelphia’s University of Pennsylvania, advocates a changed mentality, replacing “temp” with a “leased employee. At least with temping, you more or less know going in when the job will end. With regular employment, it may end just as soon,” with little, if any, notice. He also states that some agencies offer more longer-term affiliations than

many traditional employers. Cappelli adds that “there’s some evidence that the agencies may actually treat employees better. They’re interested in getting your skills up, because they can charge more for your time.” They also strive to make certain you don’t leave because of poor management practices. Once on assignment, minimize anxiety about obtaining full-time employment, recommends Lisa McCarty, vice president of Client Services at OnDemand Resources L.L.C., headquartered in Great Falls, Va.:• “Learn the organization quickly;• “Make an immediate impact; • “Sell yourself as a do-er for

many of these deliverable-driven assignments; and• “Network.” Snodgrass did exactly that. “I tried to take ownership of any position I had,” she remarks. “I was always early, willing to do what no one else might want to do, market myself on the job and try to develop relationships with everyone on the staff.” (Dr. Mildred L. Back-to-school safety: Follow these tips to keep your child safe and healthy

KID TIMEKID TIME

The back-to-school season can be both an exciting and anxious time. As a parent, you can teach your child a few lessons, and take a few precautions yourself, to put your mind at ease when children leave home to go back to the classroom. From the lunch container you buy to teaching your child about playground safety, you can do a lot to prevent your child from falling ill or getting hurt. "Parents need not worry about sending their children back to school. By doing a few little things to ensure your child's safety, you'll put your worries to rest and allow yourself to have a fun and stress-free start to the school year," says Dorothy Drago, child product safety expert and author of "From Crib to Kindergarten: The Essential Child Safety Guide." Drago offers the following tips to consider as your child goes back to school: • Food safety: When packing a lunch for your child, make sure you keep items that need to be

cold (like cheese or yogurt) at the proper temperature by storing them in an insulated container. • Transportation safety: Make sure to check with the school on approved walking or biking routes. • Product safety: Make sure any products, from art supplies to lunch boxes, are certifi ed under the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). • Playground safety: Playgrounds are fun areas for kids of all ages but they can be dangerous. Take a look at how much protective surfacing is under equipment. There should

be at least nine inches of mulch, and it should be replenished or re-spread as needed to ensure that the depth is maintained. Encourage kids to play with the existing play structures and to never add jump ropes or other toys because they may introduce a strangulation risk.

With these safety issues talked about and taken care of, nothing should stand in the way of a great start to the school year for you and your child. Courtesy of ARAcontent

Personal Branding: A New Focus In Job Searching A record number of people across

the nation are unemployed and look-ing for work. As competition among candidates grows, it becomes more and more difficult to stand out in a crowd. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Feb. 5 that 14.8 million Americans were unemployed, a num-ber that hasn't changed much since the beginning of 2010. This translates to an average of six people now compet-ing for each job opening.

Career development profession-als are creating new strategies to help clients increase the chances of getting noticed among the throngs of job appli-cants vying for positions. One such professional is Martha Schottelkotte, director of career services at Brown Mackie College - Cincinnati. She guides students and graduates regu-larly as they create resumes and seek employment to begin new careers.

Schottelkotte introduces students to the concept of personal branding. Branding is a term borrowed from marketing, where brand names are carefully managed. In marketing, a

brand is an intangible collection of per-ceptions in the consumer's mind about a product or service. A brand name helps to raise awareness and build trust in a crowded, competitive market-place. Personal branding is the process of distinguishing the essence of an individual's relevant career attributes and communicating them consistently throughout the resume and interview.

"We begin work on personal brand-ing by looking at brand icons that we all know, like the McDonald's arches," Schottelkotte says. "The icon repre-sents the business and how they want to be perceived." The same principle works for individuals. The resume becomes a personal marketing tool to communicate core attributes, not just as a medical assistant or paralegal, but also as a human being. "For a truly effective resume, you must know who you are and what you stand for," she says.

To this end, she next asks students to develop a personal statement of philosophy. Schottelkotte shares the one she wrote for herself with students

as an example to guide them in writing their own. "So many resumes out there are overblown, copied, or misrepresenta-tive of the person applying," she says. "Writing a personal statement of philoso-phy helps students crystallize who they are and how they want to be perceived by the world. It gives them a launching pad for how they can effectively and authentically market themselves."

In developing the statements, key words come up for each student as they describe themselves. When they distill their life views into five or six key words - such as integrity, enthusiasm, account-ability, or reliability - students can devel-op a greater understanding of themselves and what drives them as a professional. "It truly helps them to focus on them-selves, and personalize the content in a resume," says Schottelkotte. "It's not just about where you worked and what tasks you did. It's about your range of skills, what you have accomplished, and how you accomplished it. It comes down to who you are at your core, and translates to what you bring to your work and your employer."

As students read their personal statements of philosophy aloud in class, Schottelkotte says, "There's always hugging, and sometimes tears, as they see each other in a new light. It reminds people to be conscious of other people's stories." In an interview, they can weave attributes from their personal philosophy into the conversa-tion.

"The dominant interview questions are behavioral," Schottelkotte contin-ues. "What you've overcome, how you would take action in a given situation. Students get a heightened sense of con-fidence when they're able to respond to interview questions in a more authentic way."

Recent college graduates and expe-rienced professionals alike can benefit from personal branding during a job search. The discipline and soul-search-ing required to develop a personal statement of philosophy seems to be well worth the effort.

Five ways to ensure your older car costs less to keep runningFollowing these simple steps will help you avoid expensive repairs:

1. Get to know the owner's manual. Your owner's manual will provide vital infor-mation on your vehicle's systems, and should include a maintenance schedule. If you no longer have the owner's man-ual or want more detailed maintenance information for your car, you can buy a factory service manual online. Auto parts retailer RockAuto.com sells manuals for $12 to $50 - money well spent if it helps you avoid a repair that costs hundreds or even thousands

2. Take care of the timing belt. Most cars newer than 20 years old have timing belts that need to be changed, sometimes as often as every 60,000 miles.Look in your owner's manual to see if your car has a timing belt and when it must be replaced.

3. Check your fl uids. Make sure you know the manufacturer's recommenda-tions for what type of oil, antifreeze, transmission, power steering and brake fl uid your vehicle uses.Check your owner's manual to determine what kind of fl uid to use and when each needs to be changed.

4. Pay attention to shock absorbers and struts. Consult your service manual or mechanic to get recommendations for your specifi c vehicle.

5. Stay on schedule. The maintenance schedule in your owner's or shop manual will also list important inspections to perform periodically, and repairs or maintenance you can expect the vehicle will need throughout its serviceable life. It will often be cheaper to replace auto parts before they break than after. Use the chart in your manual to keep track of completed maintenance.

Performing regularly scheduled mainte-nance also will allow you to anticipate expenses and budget for them - a tactic which will always save you more money than paying for emergency repairs.

Online Education Puts Nurses on the Right Track

The United States doesn't have enough nurses, and the nursing shortage will only get worse. Due to new health care legislation, an estimated 32 million Americans will enter the health care system by 2014 -- according to the U.S.

Department of Health and Human Services, the national nursing shortage will increase 29 percent by 2020. Many Americans want to earn their bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) but are turned away. According to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, schools turned down more than 54,000 qualified applications to professional nursing programs in 2009. The reason? Program capacity is too low due to a lack of nurse educators. But some nurses are advancing their training through self-paced, online education programs like those offered through The

College Network and its partner institutions. Online programs provide nurses with the ability to earn a valuable BSN while continuing to work full time in their current nursing job, gaining valuable hands-on experience while also providing for their families. Advantages of online BSN programs include:1. Self-paced education. Those with significant work experience might be out of practice when it comes to studying in a traditional school environment. Companies like The College Network ease the transition by allowing adult learners to take their time or move more rapidly through their courses than would be possible in a classroom setting.2. Ability to work and study

simultaneously. Students can take courses and study on their own timeline. Without needing to take off work, drive to campus and sit in a classroom each week, students can earn their degree while working full time and keeping family commitments.3. No waiting lists. A nurse who wants to earn a degree at a traditional college is often placed on a waiting list until a spot becomes available. In the two to three years it can take to get to the top of a waiting list to start a program, that student could have completed the entire program from an online education provider. The changing weather shouldn't mean packing up your seasonal clothes or breaking the bank by shopping for completely new outfi ts you will wear for only a few months. Alison Deyette, nationally recognized lifestyle and personal style expert, explains how you can look and feel great by investing in classic items that will complement any wardrobe regardless of season, occasion and budget.

"Timeless, all-weather clothing and footwear are a must for everyone," says Deyette. "Building a simple, core collection of closet staples, like a solid-colored pencil skirt, a tailored trench, black or neutral dress pants, a great pair of dark denim jeans and a tailored white blouse, offer versatility and fl exibility throughout warm and cool weather months."

Once you have a solid wardrobe foundation, Deyette recommends adding less expensive, yet chic and contemporary accessories including handbags, necklaces, earrings and belts as modern touches to your collection. To round out your look from top to bottom Deyette, a self-professed footwear fanatic, suggests purchasing smart, stylish and comfortable footwear to complement classic attire that can be worn for any occasion.

"Comfort should be a key consideration when buying men's and women's footwear. The good news is that you don't have to sacrifi ce style for comfort," says Deyette. "It may be surprising to some that Crocs offers more than women's and men's sandals, as they also manufacture great looking shoes that come in classic designs

such as sling-backs, fl ats, wedges and loafers. These shoes are very comfortable and affordable, and are perfect for any occasion you may be headed to - whether it be to the offi ce, running errands or out to dinner with friends."

Deyette is quick to point out that while black is often an obvious color choice for footwear, a fresh splash of color will spice up any outfi t. "Color is an expression of you and how you feel. Therefore, it's always in season and in style. Try a bright red, rich green or dark plum fl at to add a bit

of personal fl air and style to a classic striped shirt or a solid dress, no matter the time of year."

Deyette also advises that before you pack away clothes and shoes as a new season rolls in, check your closet for "hidden gems." "I recommend people take a fresh look at what's in their closet before storing a season's clothes away. You might think that fl owy dress is only wearable in the summer, but lightweight pieces are perfect year-round when paired with your favorite cardigan, a smart jacket or layered with tights," suggests Deyette.

"Also, look for shirts, pants and fi tted jackets that come in basic colors, as well as seasonless prints in blues, greens, reds or purples. These types of clothing are the workhorses of your closest. They can be worn in a variety of different ways for a range of occasions throughout the year," says Deyette. "Such pieces are also great for layering and creating new looks."
