Judy was in Denton, Texas to give a seminar on Intarsia at the 2009 Texas Scroll Saw Picnic April 17th & 18th. The presen-tation included a step-by-step instructional slide show on how to shape the Scarecrow, I-222. This project was featured in the fall issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking and Crafts. After the seminar, Judy was on hand to answer the many questions from visitors throughout the day. Thank you Lyndal’s Backyard Workshop & DFW Scrollers for the wonderful time. The last week in July, Judy packed her van and headed out to Richland Center, Wisconsin for the Midwest Scroll Saw Trade Show, July 30th and August 1st. Many Intarsia enthusiasts came

Frequently Asked Questions Q. What is the best way to transfer the pattern to the different shades of wood? A. When I first started working with my dad back in the 70’s we used carbon paper to transfer each part onto differ-ent shades of wood. This is a viable method, especially if you have a very large project. In the last 15 years the technique has changed, I use multiple copies of the pattern. Most projects will use around 5 cop-ies. I cut each part that has a different color or grain direc-tion from the patterns. I like to leave at least a ¼” of excess paper around each pattern piece. This gives you a “lead in” line to get your blade aligned before you start cutting the actual part. This also gives the pattern a little more “staying power” as you cut out the parts.
Q. What kind of glue do you use to hold the pattern on the wood? A. Make sure your wood is as dust free and smooth as pos-sible before applying the pattern. I started out using spray adhesive, one of our students told us about the 3M repo-sitionable glue stick. This is not your typical glue stick. It is not paste-like at all. Recently another student brought a Xyron “glue machine” that works great. You place your pat-tern, right side up, in the slot then crank the handle and the pattern comes out the other end with clear acetate on top and adhesive on the backside of the pattern part. You peel the clear acetate off first. Then you can peel the pattern off of the nonstick paper and place it on your wood.
Make multiple copies of the pattern, glue the pattern pieces to the wood. Give yourself at least a 1/4” around each section for a “lead in” line.
Use a repositionable glue stick, spray adhesive or a Xyron glue machine to apply the pattern pieces to the wood.
Q. How do you determine which piec-es will be more contoured.A. First you need to decide what your goal is. Are you trying to make it look re-alistic or do want a more decorative intar-sia project? My goal has been to make my projects as realistic as possible. Just be-cause the color changes does not mean the contour changes. I sanded the parts (like the spots above the eyes) consistently with the head. To make it easier to accomplish this I use what I call sanding shims. These are pieces of scrap wood, like plywood, cut approximately the size of the parts I want to sand as a unit. I use a light duty double-sided carpet tape to hold the parts onto the sanding shim as I sand them. Now if you want a decorative project you can sand each part individually. I have seen many projects in which each part is heavily rounded. This gives the intarsia piece a quilt like appearance. When each piece of wood is heavily rounded you tend to notice the pieces of wood first then realize it’s a dog. As opposed to seeing a dog, then upon closer inspection you notice it is made from different pieces of wood. To get dimension on your project you need at least three different thicknesses of wood. This is achieved by sanding some wood thinner and the use of raising shims.
Rounding each part can make your project have a more “quilt-like” appearance. Rounding some parts as a unit gives the proj-ect a consistent contour.

ouglas Johnston of Norton, Kansas has completed over 750 Intar-sia pieces from Judy’s patterns. The story “She Paints with Wood” in the August 1988 Better Homes and Garden’s Wood magazine introduced Douglas to the world of Intarsia. His first project was Judy’s pattern, “Oh Hoot”. From that point on, he has been hooked on Intarsia. Douglas and his wife, Doris stopped by Judy’s shop in Lufkin, Texas. They spent a memorable time visiting and seeing the Intarsia work-shop not to mention they got a first hand look at the pieces pictured in the magazine. When asked what he has done with all of his art, he said, some pieces are displayed in various libraries, in shows, and in his daughter’s restaurant in Kansas. He has introduced many woodworkers to Intarsia and Judy’s patterns. Douglas has also given away several hundred pieces to family and friends. He is a retired band director in the public schools and still keeps his fingers into music. For the last nineteen years he has directed a thirteen member English Hand Bell Choir and this past winter he gave each member a piece of Intarsia. While spending the winters in Texas, he has entered Intarsia proj-ects in the Chip-o-Tex Woodcarving Show in Harlingen. In February 2009,

confess I am obsessed. Yes, obsessed with Intarsia, having com-pleted over 300 pieces to date. Yes, ob-sessed with finding and hording that per-fect piece of wood turning my shop into a small lumberyard. I wonder how many intarsiaists are just like me. I hope I am not the only one!!! My preference for intarsia is to use western red cedar. My reasons for this are several. Western red cedar is relatively cheap and easy to find in my area of the country. Cutting and shaping western red cedar is much easier than hardwoods, but this can also be a nega-tive since it can break very easily since it is a soft wood. Visualizing a project utilizing a particular piece of wood has an artistic element to it. The myriad of colors and the different grains available in cedar lends itself perfectly to intarsia. This is something I have recently begun to develop with Judy’s guidance since the artistic side of my brain has been hiber-nating for my entire life. I would have to say that this challenge is the major rea-son why I use western red cedar. I frown on using hardwoods. Now this is just my personal preference and there is nothing wrong with project done with hardwoods. I admit on occasion I

im and Marianne Vander Voord are working on having a wood-working trade show in the Smoky Mountain area. The tentative date will be around the third week in October 2010. This show will include related products for intarsia, scroll sawing, wood carving, wood turning, in short anything wood related. The goal is to open the doors to all forms of woodworking for everyone from teens to old timers. The enjoyment of watching wood “come to life” takes on many forms. This is still in the planning stages, more information will be available as soon as possible. The Smokies are beautiful in the fall. Hope everyone can join us!

“Bears Eight” (I-274) You can never have enough bears. As per many requests for special occasions, especially Valentines day, I have three more to add to the set. The Halloween bear was a treat (smile) to make. The pumpkin is all cut from the same piece of wood mak-ing it much easier than inlaying the eyes and smile. The ghost outfit was fun to sand. I used aspen for the outfit, western red cedar (WRC) for all the other parts. It’s amazing the different shades of WRC. On the New Year bear I used some yellow heart for the star and the safety pins, aspen for the diapers, hat, and the year, the rest is WRC. The most challenging part is inlaying the year and cutting out the safety pins. The pattern has a whole set of numbers, this would make a great “new baby” bear too. The Valentine bear has blood wood hearts, which is very hard, aspen for the wings, yellow heart for the bow and part of the arrow, the rest is WRC. You could eliminate the wings to make it a little easier cutting and sanding. “Poinsettia” (I-275) Speaking of special oc-casions this pattern is designed to go over the door. However, it would look great anywhere. I used paduak
for the flower portion, WRC for the leaves, walnut for the frame, and made some yellow heart dowels for the centers of the poinsettia. I sanded the leaves very wavy, if you look at pictures of a real poinsettia you can see how many waves and dip there are. You can make just the center flower, or the smaller flowers can be made into ornaments. This is a very versatile pattern. This has more than 60 pieces, each petal/leaf is numbered like 12a and 12b. “Great Dane” (I-276) The Great Dane can be made as pictured or if you prefer, there is an “uncut” ear on the pattern. I used some northern white ce-dar, walnut, and WRC. This is more traditional color however you can make the Great Dane any color combination. “Lhasa Apso Puppy” (I-277) The puppy looks great with texture. I used the Wonder Wheel to make the wood look more like a shaggy coat. I used aspen, WRC, and some walnut for the eyes and nose. “Mule Deer” (I-278). We have many requests for a mule deer. From the research I did to create the pattern they are a magnificent deer, larger than whitetail deer (not to mention how large the ears are). I used aspen, WRC, and some walnut. Have fun, Judy

have gone over to the dark side and used hardwoods in my proj-ects. Cost, added effort it takes to shape, and difficulty cutting are some of my reasons for using hardwoods sparingly. Once you over come theses minor negatives the hardwoods make quality looking intarisa pieces. After giving the reasons for the wood I use, I can better ex-plain why my basement shop resembles a lumberyard. If my house were ever to catch fire, I think my basement, would burn for years. How did this come about? That is a question my wife would like answered too, but that is for another time. You can never throw away even the smallest piece of wood because you will need it some day, right? I have gone as far as to keep knots that have really neat patterns in them. You never know when the right project may come along. I guess that ex-plain that box of material scraps in my wife’s sewing room. I cannot tell you how may times that trip to Home Depot or Lowes on a household errand results in the addition of a special piece of wood for the next project. Does anyone ever go to Home Depot and not check out the lumber isle? Like I said, I hope I am not the only one! Now these trips alone have resulted in more than enough wood but there are also the all day excursions to the real lum-beryards. I am fortunate enough to have two great lumberyards close and more times than I care to admit I’ve filled the SUV with special gems. Why own an SUV if you can’t fill it with wood. I would encourage anyone living in the northeast and central Ohio to visit Keim Lumber (www.keimlumber.com). It is the Super-K of lumberyards. I would be remiss if I did not mention the excur-sions to Jefferies Lumber on my trips down to Roberts Studio. I am always so limited on the amount of wood because of those darn suitcases in back. Finally there is that source for lumber on E-bay. All you have to do is type the kind of wood you want and you get hundreds of results from which you can choose. It’s easy and they take PayP-al too. At least you save on gas, right! My wife will never let me forget the week long deliveries of Splated Hackberry I received several months ago. Her response to that was “more wood!”My conclusions to these ramblings are:1. I prefer western red cedar2. Hardwoods make great projects too, but they are from the dark side3. I horde wood4. I am obsessed5. Despite all else I love the challenge of Intarsia and will con-tinue despite my faults. And last but not least I have a great and understanding wife!Pete

Intarsia Detail Sanders
#IS-F Flat Sander only $12.00ea. #IS-B Bow Sander only $12.00ea.
Invented by an Intarsia enthusiast in Florida, just for Intarsia projects. You will find these sanders hard to replace, and use them every step of the way on your Intarsia projects, from start to finish. The bow sander works great for those “hard to get to” areas, and the flexible flat sander is great for contour sanding. These sanders do not require special sandpaper, and use your favorite grit cloth backed sanding sheets, cut into strips. The bow sander will also hold abrasive cord. The set comes with some pre-cut strips of sandpaper to help get you started.

Kirjes Inflatable Sanders • Use with the Foredom Lathe aboveThe Kirges sanders are soft on the edges which makes getting into tight places without tearing up the rest of the piece much easier. I would not recommend these sanders for your heavy sanding, the larger diameter drums work better for that. These little sanders have saved me time when adding extra detail to my intarsia projects. The air is pumped in through the stem. Be sure to place the sanding sleeve over the edges of the black rubber bulb. If you start seeing black streaks on your wood it’s best to stop and move the sanding sleeve. It is easy to sand a hole in the rubber. I use a rougher grit on the K-120 (like a 80 grit) and a smoother grit on the K-140 (220 grit).
Set includes one bow sander and one flexible flat sander.
Comes with a clamp that will mount the unit to a table top, bench, etc. Can also be removed from the clamp and inserted into a drilled hole.

Gel Finish We use three coats of this gel on our projects which produces a very nice finish, easy to get professional results. We coat each piece before gluing down.
Intarsia Whiting Gel if using white pine or any white wood that yellows. The white pigment will help keep the wood a lighter shade. This whiting is the same basic formula as the regular clear, with a white pigment added. The pigment makes the gel look more lumpy. For more natural results just use one coat of white followed by two coats of clear.
Old Masters is only available to those living in the contiguous U.S. One can of gel is $8.00 shpg. charge, two - three cans of gel is $12.00 shpg., four cans is $13.00 shpg., five cans is $14.00. Sorry for the price increase, UPS and USPS have raised their rates.

The classes are held in our Studio/Woodshop located in Seymour, TN (note map on page 22). You will take home a project that is completely shaped/sanded and a backing cut out for it. We do not put a finish on it (takes too long to dry). This year we are asking students to help clean up their area at the end of each day. It doesn’t take long, we really do appreciate it. BEGINNER Class: We will cover basic skills required to get you started on the right foot with Intarsia. You should have some skill using a scroll saw. If not, we suggest you take a scroll saw course or at least practice on your scroll saw before attending the class. We will cover each step, using an easier pattern to help you have a good understanding of this technique. This is beginning Intarsia, not beginning woodworking.Scroll Sawing for Intarsia Class. For those of you brand new to scroll sawing we now have a Tuesday afternoon (the Tuesday before class day) scroll sawing class. The goal of this class is to learn basic intarsia scroll sawing skills that are needed to make your pieces fit. The class will start at 1:00pm and finish up at 4:30pm. The dates of the beginner scroll sawing classes will be May 4th, and Sept 21st. The fee for the Scroll Sawing Intarsia class is only $40.00.
INTERMEDIATE 1 Class: We will spend a little less time on the wood selection and layout. The project will be a little more complex than the beginner project. The main focus will be on improving your scroll sawing skills to help ensure a good fit on your projects, plus we will spend more time on shaping and adding texture to your project. You should have at least 8 to 14 Intarsia projects before this class. If not, we suggest you make more projects before attending the class, or take the beginner class first.
INTERMEDIATE 2 Class: Will move quickly through the wood selection and layout. We will get more detailed about colors and grain selection, you should have experience scroll sawing. The majority of the time on shaping and adding texture to your project. You should have made 14 to 24 Intarsia projects before this class. If not, we suggest you make more projects before attending the class, or take the beginner or intermediate 1 class first.
ADVANCED Class: You must attend an Intermediate 2 class before you can take the Advanced Class. We will send you the patterns and scroll saw blades for the project, you will cut the project out before class using the wood of your choice. Having the project cut out before class will enable you to have three days with Judy contouring the project. This class has been focusing on the human face, the complexities involved in making a realistic face will make all other projects seem like a piece of cake. The class will cover how to have a successful project using lots of raising shims for added dimension. It will be interesting to see the choices of wood each student uses. The project will be something that Judy has designed just for the class.
TUITION $475.00 Three Day Class: All classes will be held from Wednesday through Friday. This will be a “hands on” class. All classes will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 5 PM with a 1 hour lunch break, we will provide picnic lunches. We will also pro-vide refreshments and snacks during the day. PAYMENTSTo register for a class we require a deposit of $200.00. FULL PAYMENT FOR THE TUITION MUST BE RECEIVED THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE BEGINNING OF YOUR CLASS. Due to long waiting lists, we ask that you notify us as soon as possible if you have a change of plans so that we can fill your class space. There will be a $50 fee to transfer from one class to another. Class payments will not be transferred to future classes outside the current year’s class schedule. REFUND AND CANCELLATION POLICYTo be eligible for any returned money, you must notify us as soon as possible. There will be an automatic $50 cancellation fee for any canceled registration, regardless of the date of withdrawal. If you withdraw from a class more than 60 days in advance, the school will refund the deposit on the class, less the $50 can-cellation fee (refund of $150.00). If you withdraw 30 to 59 days before the class, the school will refund only 50% of the de-posit on the class, less the $50 cancellation fee (refund of $50.00). If you withdraw within 29 days of the class, there will be NO REFUND ON ALL PAID MONEY FOR ANY REASON. If you cancel a class and are eligible for a refund, the available refundable money can be applied to another class in the same year (less the $50 cancellation fee).
