Fees for persons 50 years of age or older, are $56.00 (includes HST) for the calendar year.

All members, including Lifetime members, and members residing in Harrison Landing or Harrison Pointe, are issued the same type of membership card. This is a change f r om p rev ious year s . Recrea t i on membership is included in the fees paid by Harrison Landing and Harrison Pointe residents. Lifetime membership is also free to persons 90 years of age and older, provided the member paid a full year’s membership for the year directly prior. In previous years, Lifetime members, and Harrison Landing and Harrison Pointe members were not required to obtain new cards each calendar year. We have found that, in order to keep our records up-to-date, we need to handle all renewals in the same manner.

Another change effective this year is that renewing members (who were members in 2011) will not be able to get a discounted rate for 2012. ( i .e. those members renewing September 2012 or later). Thank you to all new and renewing members!

A valid membership is required to take part in most activities at Langley Seniors Recreation & Resource Centre. We encourage prospective new members to try the Centre’s activities. However, after three visits, you will be asked to join the Centre to participate in most activities and clubs. The computer lab is available to members only members only members only members only at all times. Some activities, such as Special Events, Dinners, Van Trips, and Education and Health programs, are open to non-members at a slightly higher cost. There are small annual fees for some activities and clubs (e.g. Snooker, Carpet Bowling and Table Tennis).

Our Dining Room is open to the public on weekdays from 9:00am; lunch is served from 11:00am—1:30pm. On Saturdays, the Dining Room is open from 10:00am - 1:pm. Lunch entrees, soup, sandwiches, muffins, etc. are served on weekdays. On Saturdays, coffee and muffins and soup & sandwich lunches are served. We ask that you show your membership card each time you go through the cafeteria line. *Note: Prices and dates subject to change at any time due to unforeseen circumstances .

At the Centre, we are committed to keeping our fees for programs, events and trips as reasonable as possible. Having consistent, fair ways of handling refund requests is part of what will allow us to keep fees low. We do not like to disappoint by cancelling programs and events, and we strive to offer programs and events that members would sign up for and enjoy. When we do not get enough participants, however, we do have to cancel. The following guidelines will now apply to cancellations and refunds. Van trips/Programs/Special Events & Dinners All programs, trips and events have a “registration deadline”. On this date the Senior Centre will decide if the event will be cancelled or if it will occur. If the program, trip or event does not have enough participants, we will cancel it the day of the registration deadline and provide a full refund to those who have paid. If the event is a “go” we will continue to accept registrations until the event is sold out. Important: Refunds will only be given if requested before the registration deadline. Theatre trips In the case of theatre shows, tickets often have to be paid for well in advance of the event. Refunds will be given if the tickets have not yet been paid for by the Centre. After tickets have been paid for, a refund will be given if another person comes forward to buy the ticket of the person unable to attend. In the case of theatre tickets where tickets do not have to be paid for in advance, the guidelines under “Van trips” will apply. Footcare Clinic/Reflexology appointments Payment may be forfeited unless 24 hours notice is given when cancelling or changing appointment day or time. When a participant cancels and is entitled to a refund, a $2.00 administrative fee will be deducted. If it is the Seniors Centre that cancels, a full refund will be given. Refunds will be given via the same method by which payment was received (cash, cheque, debit, or credit).

Executive Director’s Corner

I am writing this blurb as the sun is shining through my office window. As you read this in

October, we can remember that we did in fact have a beautiful summer with warm sunny

weather. As we roll into the fall months we have lots of great programs and events to look

forward to in this quarter. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner!

As many of you already know, Iris Keen has chosen not to return to her position of Director

of Recreation. This came as a shock to many of us but we understand that things change

and people move on and need to do what is best for themselves. The staff took Iris out for

dinner to wish her well. Who knows, we may see her enjoying an event or two at the centre

now…

I am pleased to announce that Christine Dembicki will assume the role of Director of

Recreation. She has done a fabulous job over the past six months. Christine is very open to

new ideas and suggestions to continue to make the Centre the vibrant place it has always

been.

I hope that many of you have had an opportunity to look at our website. We are working very

hard at keeping it up to date. We also have quarterly e-newsletters that go out with

information on upcoming programs, volunteering opportunities and much more. If you have

a story about an event at the centre or a great program you attend let us know and we will

include it in the e-newsletter. If you haven’t already signed up, go to our website www.lsrs.ca

and submit your email address.

We are asking for help from all our members to promote the centre to the community. Even

though the Seniors Centre has been open for 19 years, some people do not know what

services we offer. Lots of community members believe we are a nursing or retirement home.

FAR FROM IT!!! As valued members of the Society please tell everyone about our great

programs and events at the centre, great resources and information and of course

friendships and fun. Encourage your neighbours or friends to come over and try the centre,

have lunch and explore all the options there are for people 50+ living in Langley. Don’t forget

to let local business people, your doctors and healthcare professionals know about our

services also.

Mark your calendars for our upcoming garage sale on November 3rd!! I hope to see you all

out to it and if you are available to help, let us know.

NOTICE REGARDING VAN TRIPS Due to the high volume of traffic in our parking lot, we ask that you, whenever possible, park across the street at Blacklock School when you come for a bus trip. Public parking is available on 207 Street and in the section in Blacklock School parking lot that faces the park. In the past we have had requests to pick up people and drop them off at home for our van trips. Due to the nature of our trips, it is impossible to do this. Please ensure that you have a ride to and from the Centre. If you do not, a taxicab will be called for you at your expense. CHRISTMAS TIME @ BUTCHART

GARDENS, Victoria, BC It is the unmistakable presence and holiday legacy left by the original hostess, Jennie Butchart, that’s most keenly felt at this time of year. For though the charm of the Butchart Gardens is undeniable in the summer months, it’s at Christmas Time that their hospitable warmth shines. By night, the gardens are a magical sight as a lavish display of lights illuminates the sky. A streaming blue waterfall of lights transforms the darkness as it rushes into a quiet black lake. Pointed conifers dotted with lights become instant Christmas Trees. In the Dining Room we will have High Tea first, then it’s on to explore the gardens. The celebrated “12 Days of Christmas” are evident all around. We will have 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the gardens before boarding the bus to drive to the ferry. Be sure and allow enough time to visit the wonderful gift shop. Includes transportation, driver, tour guide, ferry costs, admission to the gardens, High Tea and HST. Note: Please bring your Gold Card. If you do not have one, add $29.70 to your costs. Remember to dress warmly as all the exhibits are outside. CLYBOURNE PARK, Stanley Theatre A comedy of Race and Real Estate. The

winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize for best play, this biting contemporary satire skewers the convent ions of pol i t ica l correctness in shockingly entertaining fashion. When young white newlyweds attempt to buy the very same house, will they face the same resistance? Date: Wednesday, October 3 Time: 12:30pm - 5:30pm Cost: $82.00 Members $87.00 Non Members

BE FRAUD AWARE! Many British Columbians have lost their life savings to risky or dangerous investments because they didn’t understand the risks, ask the right questions, do some research or get a second opinion. If you encounter a sales pitch that sounds too good to be true - STOP! It’s a warning sign that the investment might be a scam. These kind of sales pitches are designed to push your buttons to appeal to your desires or fears that can lead to an impulsive, emotional, or irrational investment decision. Everyone would like to find a great investment that provides guaranteed financial security, but unfortunately, some offers are just too good to be true. The InvestRight seminar, del ivered by representat ives f rom the BC Securit ies Commission, provides a wide range of tools to help investors develop critical thinking skills they need to protect themselves - information such as how to spot a fraud warning sign, types of scams and where to call to report a scam. Sometimes the best investment you can make is the one you don’t make.

The Seniors’ Poker Group II

It’s been quite a few years since our first rhyme Adding some great new members during the time, Alas, time takes its toll while gaining the new

On our honour role now, we list some of our crew.

Ruth has gone, leaving in the unplanned With no more awards of a beautiful afghan, Ed suddenly went right out of our midst

We still play his game called “Slaughterhouse Six”.

George left suddenly, and we missed him by heck For the dealer on his left, he’d always cut the deck, Pulling up to the table in a scooter full of tools If an argument developed, he told us the rules.

We lost a chap named Howard who never frowned If he lost he’d smile saying, “You took me down”, Cliff went quick around the age of ninety-three

If he was beat out of a pot, he loudly say “naturally”.

Max has seldom returned to the traces We’re still unsure if he’s checking five aces, Jean, Dorothy and Ben no longer attend

It’s difficult for us, like losing another friend.

The good news is, we’re still playing it’s true Bob the banker and big Bob to name a few,

Still insulting each other but without bellowing If the truth is known, we think they’re mellowing.

We have a third Bob now for an added perk

He checks out periodically to do some social work, When Doreen’s winning she’ll start to hum

But when Connie holds a good one, she tries to look glum.

The two Don’s are just about the same as ever One raises the bet often, the other almost never,

Bill is so often lucky and wins a big share Spending it travelling to see if Saskatchewan’s still there.

Marlene’s still a happy player which is a gift

We’re thinking at times she misses arguing with Cliff, Kay’s still with us and doing her best

To fill the box with chips, it’s yet quite a test.

There’s a newbie named Roger of more recent scene His favourite game’s called “Let’s chase the Queen”,

Well we’ve had a few others all good scouts With our numerous games, they soon peter out.

This then is our group of this present claim If we’ve missed anyone we’re truly ashamed,

To play poker with us, five dollars is all you pay In the event you go broke, it’s free for the rest of the day.

Bring a jar, buy a jar!

Traditionally, part of our fund-raising efforts has included the ever-popular jar sale! For those of you who may not know how this works, it’s pretty simple. Everyone is asked to bring a jar with something in it. Past year popular items have included: mini-size jig-saws, puzzles, candy, jam, nuts and new items. Unpopular items: paperclips, cotton balls, screws, rubberbands. All the jars are given a number and tickets with corresponding numbers are sold. Buy a ticket ($2) and get the jar labeled with the number on your ticket. If everyone brings a jar, and buys a jar, we’ll make almost $1000!

FINE PRINT: There are no restrictions on the number of jars you can bring or buy!
