Fees for persons 50 years of age or older, are $56.00 (includes HST) for the calendar year.

All members, including Lifetime members, and members residing in Harrison Landing or Harrison Pointe, are issued the same type of membership card. This is a change f r om p rev ious year s . Recrea t i on membership is included in the fees paid by Harrison Landing and Harrison Pointe residents. Lifetime membership is also free to persons 90 years of age and older, provided the member paid a full year’s membership for the year directly prior. In previous years, Lifetime members, and Harrison Landing and Harrison Pointe members were not required to obtain new cards each calendar year. We have found that, in order to keep our records up-to-date, we need to handle all renewals in the same manner.

Another change effective this year is that renewing members (who were members in 2011) will not be able to get a discounted rate for 2012. ( i .e. those members renewing September 2012 or later). Thank you to all new and renewing members!

A valid membership is required to take part in most activities at Langley Seniors Recreation & Resource Centre. We encourage prospective new members to try the Centre’s activities. However, after three visits, you will be asked to join the Centre to participate in most activities and clubs. The computer lab is available to members only members only members only members only at all times. Some activities, such as Special Events, Dinners, Van Trips, and Education and Health programs, are open to non-members at a slightly higher cost. There are small annual fees for some activities and clubs (e.g. Snooker, Carpet Bowling and Table Tennis).

Our Dining Room is open to the public on weekdays from 9:00am; lunch is served from 11:00am—1:30pm. On Saturdays, the Dining Room is open from 10:00am - 1:pm. Lunch entrees, soup, sandwiches, muffins, etc. are served on weekdays. On Saturdays, coffee and muffins and soup & sandwich lunches are served. We ask that you show your membership card each time you go through the cafeteria line. *Note: Prices and dates subject to change at any time due to unforeseen circumstances .

At the Centre, we are committed to keeping our fees for programs, events and trips as reasonable as possible. Having consistent, fair ways of handling refund requests is part of what will allow us to keep fees low. We do not like to disappoint by cancelling programs and events, and we strive to offer programs and events that members would sign up for and enjoy. When we do not get enough participants, however, we do have to cancel. The following guidelines will now apply to cancellations and refunds. Van trips/Programs/Special Events & Dinners All programs, trips and events have a “registration deadline”. On this date the Senior Centre will decide if the event will be cancelled or if it will occur. If the program, trip or event does not have enough participants, we will cancel it the day of the registration deadline and provide a full refund to those who have paid. If the event is a “go” we will continue to accept registrations until the event is sold out. Important: Refunds will only be given if requested before the registration deadline. Theatre trips In the case of theatre shows, tickets often have to be paid for well in advance of the event. Refunds will be given if the tickets have not yet been paid for by the Centre. After tickets have been paid for, a refund will be given if another person comes forward to buy the ticket of the person unable to attend. In the case of theatre tickets where tickets do not have to be paid for in advance, the guidelines under “Van trips” will apply. Footcare Clinic/Reflexology appointments Payment may be forfeited unless 24 hours notice is given when cancelling or changing appointment day or time. When a participant cancels and is entitled to a refund, a $2.00 administrative fee will be deducted. If it is the Seniors Centre that cancels, a full refund will be given. Refunds will be given via the same method by which payment was received (cash, cheque, debit, or credit).

Executive Director’s Corner

I am writing this blurb as the sun is shining through my office window. As you read this in

October, we can remember that we did in fact have a beautiful summer with warm sunny

weather. As we roll into the fall months we have lots of great programs and events to look

forward to in this quarter. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner!

As many of you already know, Iris Keen has chosen not to return to her position of Director

of Recreation. This came as a shock to many of us but we understand that things change

and people move on and need to do what is best for themselves. The staff took Iris out for

dinner to wish her well. Who knows, we may see her enjoying an event or two at the centre

now…

I am pleased to announce that Christine Dembicki will assume the role of Director of

Recreation. She has done a fabulous job over the past six months. Christine is very open to

new ideas and suggestions to continue to make the Centre the vibrant place it has always

been.

I hope that many of you have had an opportunity to look at our website. We are working very

hard at keeping it up to date. We also have quarterly e-newsletters that go out with

information on upcoming programs, volunteering opportunities and much more. If you have

a story about an event at the centre or a great program you attend let us know and we will

include it in the e-newsletter. If you haven’t already signed up, go to our website www.lsrs.ca

and submit your email address.

We are asking for help from all our members to promote the centre to the community. Even

though the Seniors Centre has been open for 19 years, some people do not know what

services we offer. Lots of community members believe we are a nursing or retirement home.

FAR FROM IT!!! As valued members of the Society please tell everyone about our great

programs and events at the centre, great resources and information and of course

friendships and fun. Encourage your neighbours or friends to come over and try the centre,

have lunch and explore all the options there are for people 50+ living in Langley. Don’t forget

to let local business people, your doctors and healthcare professionals know about our

services also.

Mark your calendars for our upcoming garage sale on November 3rd!! I hope to see you all

out to it and if you are available to help, let us know.

Our day begins with a drive down the I-5 to Marysville, where a lunch buffet at the Tulalip Casino awaits you. Then it’s onto the Pacific Science Centre in Seattle, Washington where we will see the Tutankhamun: The Golden King and The Great Pharaohs. Step into one of history’s most treasured stories. This exhibit features more than 100 objects from King Tut’s tomb and ancient sites representing some of the most important rulers throughout 2,000 years of ancient Egyptian history. With more than twice the number of artifacts than the original Tut exhibit that toured in the 1970’s, many of these objects have never toured before. Come face-to-face with the largest image of King Tuk unearthed - a 10 foot statue found at the remains of the funerary temple of two of his high officials. WALKING CLUB - MODERATE

Every Monday morning this group meets in the lounge to go for a walk. On occasion we carpool to local parks. Once a month the Club uses the Seniors Centre Bus to go somewhere in the Lower Mainland for our walk. The monthly walk is usually 1-1.5 hours with lunch (on your own) following the walk. People who like to walk up to 2k are also welcome and will have company. Remember to dress appropriately and to bring a snack. DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT PROGRAM This free program, for people with type 2 diabetes, is brought to us by the University of Victoria, Centre on Aging. This 6-week series will teach the skills needed for day-to-day management of diabetes and related symptoms to enhance daily activities. Upon program completion, workshop participants have been successful in lowering their A1c levels as well as decreasing their diabetes related symptoms. The interactive workshops are facilitated by pairs of lay leaders who have chronic health conditions themselves.

HIP JOINT WORKSHOP ConnectPhysio’s Steve Occleshaw, with 15 years of physiotherapy experience in private practice and home health, talks about the hip joint. The hip is an amazing part of the human body and is a key factor in mobility. Hip joint problems and hip fractures are on the rise and are expected to continue. Workshop topics will include common causes of hip pain, hip fractures and hip replacements. Risk factors for hip problems will also be discussed and how you can lower that risk. EDUCATION SESSION

Fraser Health Home Health is offering a 2 hour ‘Successful Aging’ information session. This session will focus on various topics to help seniors and their families and care providers learn what they can do to maintain their health and what resources are available in the community to support people living at home. FOOD SKILLS FOR SENIORS PROGRAM

Food Skills is a six session healthy cooking program that aims to teach and encourage healthy eating in a fun relaxed atmosphere. The program strives to strengthen cooking confidence and skil ls with a focus on improving food knowledge necessary to make sound meal, snack and beverage choices, and increasing fruit and vegetation consumption. Participants will: learn how to choose healthy foods and increase food knowledge; deepen their knowledge of the Canadian food system; be conscious of Sugar Sweeten Beverages; understand food safety; learn to read food labels; increase their cooking confidence; modify recipes for health and budges; attend a shopping tour; meal plan; and become mindful eaters. Gardening Circle This group helps keep the plants and flowers at the Centre looking great. The landscapers and the maintenance staff and maintenance volunteers do the heavy work. Walking Club - Moderate Every Monday morning this group meets in the lounge to go for a walk. On occasion we carpool to local parks. Once a month the Club uses the Seniors Centre Bus to go some-where in the Lower Mainland for our walk. The monthly walk is usually 1-1.5 hours with lunch (on your own) following the walk. Peo-ple who like to walk up to 2k are also wel-come and will have company. Remember to dress appropriately and to bring a snack. Even if you don’t wish to walk you can join this group and browse the areas. Please see page 22 for trips.

Everyone is asked to bring a jar with something in it. Past year popular items have included: mini-size jig-saws, puzzles, candy, jam, nuts and new items. Unpopular items: paperclips, cotton balls, screws, rubberbands.All the jars are given a number and tickets with corresponding numbers are sold. This support group is for anyone, men and women, caring for an adult family member or friend who suffers from chronic disability (physical or mental). The demands and responsibilities of care-giving can be overwhelming and very stressful. A support group helps to reduce these pressures and helps the care-giver cope. Remember that “A joy shared is a joy doubled. A trouble shared is a trouble halved”. For more information please contact the nurse at the Day Centre: 778-328-2302. Coffee & Connecting Tuesdays, 10:00am A group for seniors who are beginning again after experiencing a change or loss.
