    Greetings!

Happy Fall! Where did the end of summer go? I’ve realized summer itself doesn’t end abruptly; it slowly fades away like a spectacular sunset. But for us camp folks, camp 2007 ends and simultaneously we start right away on 2008. Technology helps us stay in touch with 2007 and with our campers, parents, alumnus and staff. Technology also lurks in the forefront of every budding teenager and college student’s lap top. Our mul-titasking campers with their camp group chat in one window, homework in another, instant messaging in another and six other screens cropped onto their computer are still very busy chatting about their summers. Have you checked lately to see what the buzz is about your camp? There are great conversations going on about your camp, no doubt. Hopefully, you have crafted an online policy for your camp community to help

them to stay in the spirit of summer and be respectful of themselves and others. If you have yet to do this there is still time to connect with your staff and campers and figure out what is best for your camp and the people that make up the community in your camp. Many camps have created great policies so feel free to ask other camp people what they are doing to keep Internet content positive. I hope to see you at our Fall Professional Seminar with Fred Miller so we can learn in 2007 what is best to apply to 2008!

Welcome back! (I won't say "welcome home," because for many of us camp IS our home!)

I hope this past summer was a good one for you, your camp staff and, of course, for your campers. The change of pace fall brings cer-

tainly offers us all a moment to reflect on what has been and to rev up for what's to come. Because we at ACA New England want to stay on top of any is-sues, challenges or concerns you might have, we would love it if you'd let us know what's on your mind and if there's any way we can be of some assistance. Always feel free to email me at [email protected] or call me at 781-541-6080. It's so im-portant to know what our camp professionals are thinking since you are the eyes and ears of our industry.  I look forward to hearing from you and congratulations on another successful camp season!

Accreditation Reflection Accreditation is so much more than Standards! This past year the new Accreditation Process Guide was distributed by ACA, and more than 300 ACA New England Camp Professionals attended a stan-dards course or update course to ensure a positive transition into the revised Accreditation Process. We are constantly reminded about the wonderful commitment we have as professionals within the American Camp Association. Over this last year we really dug our heels in to understand interpreta-tions and support each other on compliance. Camp Directors and Visitors from throughout New Eng-land worked together through Written Documentation Previews and Site Visits for 124 camps this summer.

As our section continues to grow with the number of camps that have become accredited we have really recognized the need for more visitors! We will be offering the Associate Visitors Course in April and you will find a brochure available on our website: www.acane-camps.org Standards Course Saturday, Dec. 8th 10AM – 3PM Worcester, MA Standards Update Course Saturday, Dec. 8th 10AM – 1PM Worcester, MA Visitor Update Course Saturday, Dec. 8th 1:30PM – 3:00PM Worcester, MA More courses to be posted in the next Communicate and on our website.

Capital Campaign & Development Task Force

Hello to All our ACA New England Colleagues, Here is a quick update on the progress of the Capital Campaign and the 80 Westview Office. Pledge payments continue to come in relatively consistent order. Our auditor is very pleased with the progress and record keeping. At the end of last year, great strides were made in new landscaping and we have a plan in place to continue that project. Over the summer staff put camp pictures up on the walls in public areas to decorate our new home. Final decisions are being made on the commemorative plaque and dedi-cation plaques. If you have not okayed your current listing, please contact Diane at the

office. If you have not as yet made a gift to the campaign, it is still not too late to do so. Feel free to con-tact me at [email protected] or Diane at the office [email protected]. Many thanks, Rob Grabill, Chair, Capital Campaign & Development Task Force

News from State Associations The Long & Winding (Legislative) Road – Maine 2007

Maine has been hit hard with two taxation issues and a number of other bills that have kept camps on the phone to legislative decision makers during 2007. The Maine Youth Camping Association effectively deflected (for now) a bid by the State of Maine to collect a 5% tax on each camper meal served during the summer. This was a reinterpretation of an existing law on “prepared food” which was never intended to include camper meals. While pleased with the tax reprieve for summer 2007, MYCA seeks a permanent exclusion for camps. The MYCA legislative committee plans to submit a bill in the legislature for January

2008, exempting all camps from a sales tax on camper meals. Also, a comprehensive tax reform proposal that included a 7% tax on camp tuitions as “recreation and amusements” was defeated due to opposition to the bill from many business sectors, as well as due to efforts by camps and MYCA’s legislative commit-tee and counsel Jack Erler. MYCA had a chance to do some good advocacy and education with legislators about how such a tax unfairly targets camps. A new law requires a Commercial Applicator’s License To Use Pesticides in Licensed Food and Eating Es-tablishments, which further limits the application of pesticides in camp kitchens by persons other than li-censed commercial applicators. This has implications for many summer camps who do not at present con-tract outside firms for pest control.

    MAINE

The Massachusetts Camping Association invites all camp directors and staff to a Round Table Discussion on Thursday, September 27th at 10am at Camp Cedar Hill in Waltham, MA. Discussions will be broken out for day and residential camps and will include topics such as: enrollment trends, staffing trends, Mass regulations, 2007 highlights, etc. Discussions hosted by: Nat Saltonstall, Emily Parker, Meghan Schafer & Mark Toporoff. Lunch included free for MCA Members. RSVP is required. Please contact Eric Arnold at: [email protected] for more information. Legislative Update: Remember, ropes courses and climbing walls must be regis-

tered with the state as of Sept. 1, 2007. Let us know if you have questions by emailing [email protected]. The process, although a bit time consuming, is not overly challenging – especially if you are already an ACA Accredited Camp!

Online Advantages for ACA Accredited Camps By Lucy Norvell

If you do nothing else to benefit from the online advantages that ACA accredited camps now enjoy, dou-ble check and update your camp’s basic information in Find-A-Camp, ACA’s searchable data-base. Find-A-Camp now comes up in more online camp searches than ever before. HOW your camp’s information looks within the tool is important—and it’s under your control! Check out what online camp seekers will see about your camp on a results page. The best way to do this is by using Find-A-Camp as a parent would. Enter key attributes of what you offer and check to see that your camp really appears on the results page. The camp information you provided in past years appears in Find-A-Camp New Eng-land on the ACA New England website (www.acane-camps.org/camp/findcamp.php) and in the national version of Find-A-Camp (www.campparents.org & http://find.acacamps.org/finding_a_camp.php.)

You may not like what you see! Common problems include:

Incorrect contact information such as zip codes, phone numbers, email addresses, and websites. Day camp? Make sure zip code searches yield your camp’s website for Find-A-Camp users: http://www.acane-camps.org/zip/finding_zip_code.php http://find.acacamps.org/finding_zip_code.php

Names of camp personnel who are no longer with your camp Incorrect categorizing. [Girls camps coming up in coed camp searches. Special populations-only

camps (medical needs or specific disabilities) should not come up in general camp searches] Major programs or activities missing. Highlight activities and session lengths you offer. (If you are

a riding camp, appearing with comparable riding camps is not automatic; it’s a function of how you complete your camp’s profile.)

Steve Sudduth of Wyonegonic Camps received the prestigious Halsey Gulick Award at MYCA’s Annual Meeting on July 11. To know Steve Sudduth is to know the second generation of the remarkable Sudduth family—from George Sudduth to Carol Sudduth—both icons in camping—to Steve. He arrived at Wyonegonic Camps in 1964 for his first camping experience in Denmark, Maine at the ripe age of 16 months. Forty years later he was co-directing Wyonegonic with his mother, Carol Sudduth.

June Gray, a life-long Sudduth family friend, presented the award. June outlined a life of dedica-tion to Maine, to youth camping, to the natural environment and to advocacy for maintaining quality camps in Maine. Steve’s determination, his tenacity in following through on legislative matters, and his integrity make him widely rec-ognized as a camp leader and conservationist in the State of Maine.

Steve has been a familiar face in Augusta, and has served on the MYCA Board as Legislative Chair for a number of years. He also is chair of the Legislative Priorities Committee for ACA-New England and serves on the ACA National Public Policy Committee. Was a recipient of the ACA National Service Award in 2006.

In the words of his colleagues: “Steve is in the forefront for any legislative issue that impacts the quality and charac-ter of camping for children in Maine. His willingness to mentor, guide and support his fellow camp peers epitomizes what a camp leader is all about—integrity, facilitator, and faithful friend. His energy, his comprehensive deliberations on protecting and preserving the quality of Maine camps… offers a confident and reassuring presence to all of us as we face new challenges….” Congratulations on this Honor, Steve!
