TO JESUS THROUGH MARY
The Diocesan theme for 2017-18 is To Jesus through Mary.
October Focus – Joyful Mysteries
October Virtue of the Month – Obedience
Have you ever been surprised by an unexpected guest? The feeling of sheer joy in greeting someone whom you
had not seen for awhile creates both energy and excitement in us. Imagine the joy felt by Elizabeth when her
cousin, Mary, arrived to be with her after both women learned of their pregnancies. One would think that in
their time together, Mary and Elizabeth laughed, cried, shared joys, discussed fears, etc.
Elizabeth greeted her cousin with the words, “And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord
should come to me?” She recognized that Mary was the Christ-bearer, one who carried God within her.
The second Joyful Mystery – the Visitation – reminds us that we should reply to one another with Elizabeth’s
greeting, “And how does this happen to me, that the mother (father, sister, or brother) of my Lord should come
to me?” Each of us, like Mary, is a Christ-bearer. The Lord lives within us and so we can greet one another as
Elizabeth greeted Mary.
This week, let us consider how we greet everyone we meet. Do we speak as if we recognize that others carry
Christ in their hearts?
Diocese of Wilmington Principal Notes
THE BIBLE
The Church accepts and venerates the Bible as inspired. The Bible is composed of the 46 books of the Old
Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament. Together these books make up the Scriptures. The uni-
ty of the Old and New Testaments flows from the revealed unity of God’s loving plan to save us. A Catholic edition of the Bible should be in every classroom in school and in every Catholic home. En-
throning the Bible in a special place in the classroom highlights the significance of the Scriptures in our
beliefs and in our instruction. Reading passages from the Bible as part of daily prayer in the classroom
teaches young people the importance of sacred Scripture as well as the manner in which the Word of God
is reverently handled by those using the Bible.
THANK A PRIEST ON PRIESTHOOD SUNDAY!
This year, Priesthood Sunday is October 29. It is a time to show appreciation to our parish priests for all
that they do for us. Is there a better way to say “thank-you” than to remember Father in prayer? The Dioce-
san Vocations Guild (DVG) of the Diocese of Wilmington invites you to commit to praying for your parish
priest, seminarian, or our Bishop. Then download the free spiritual bouquet certificate, print it out, fill it
out, and present it to your priest on Priesthood Sunday, or any time of year! The certificate is available at
www.cdow.org/DVG.
My confidence is placed in God
who does not need our help for accomplishing his designs.
Our single endeavor should be to give ourselves to the work and to be faithful to him, and not to spoil
his work by our shortcomings.
