DRAWING AND PASTELS AUTUMN FARMLANDS IN PASTELwith Robert Carsten, PSA Capture the beauty of rural northeastern farms in autumn. Our goal is to render scenes with vibrant color and expressive mark making to create stunning, painterly impressions. Learn how color and form can be as much intuitive as it is descriptive. This is a very fun way to create and it opens up numerous possibilities for exploring concepts and subjects. Demonstration, exercises, at-easel and group critiques as well as plenty of painting time will make this an educational and enjoyable experience. All levels welcome, beginner through advanced. INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED PASTELwith Carolyn JusticeStudents will learn to interpret more complex subjects, explore contemporary directions in drawing, and continue to develop a mastery of technique. There is also more emphasis on originality and the development of a personal style. Students will further develop their skills and abilities, and be encouraged to find increasingly creative solutions for

CARTOONING PRIMER with Jon Chad Do you like to draw? Do you have a story to tell? Well, making comics might be just the thing for you! In this class, we’ll be talking about the language of comics,

how it works, and how a couple simple changes to our cartooning practice can make our comics better than ever. Vermont cartoonist Jon Chad will cover character design, acting, staging, as well as some of his favorite comic tips! We’ll wrap up with talking about book-making; how can

LANDSCAPE AND MORE!with Tom O’Brien

Landscape usually refers to an expanse of rural scenery but why limit yourself? Include animals and people or try seascapes, cityscapes, clouds and storms. In this workshop for artists of all levels, in any medium, you will learn the basic elements of design and composition inherent in a variety of different landscapes. Students will also learn the basic rules for color mixing and techniques for applying paint and preparing the paper through demonstration and one-on-one instruction. This class is open to all media but students should bring several photographs for references. A complete supply list can be found online.

PAINTING CHINESE BRUSH PAINTINGwith Linda SchultzNature is the heart of Chinese Brush painting. It is

intended to be a meditative and spontaneous art form, capturing the essence of an image or idea with very little attention to precise details. Come and learn the basics for this meditative art form. Using the “Four Treasures”, the brush, ink stick, ink stone and the paper, you will learn the techniques to create the “Four Gentleman”, the bamboo, orchid, plum and chrysanthemum. Each “Gentleman” introduces a new stroke or idea and reinforces techniques already learned. Continual demonstrations will be provided through out the classes, along with individual attention and feedback. A supply fee of $38 will be due at the beginning of class to the teacher and will include paper, ink, a brush, a palette, felt, copies and a newsprint pad.

EXPLORING WATERCOLORSwith Tom Ryan In this workshop for beginner to intermediate watercolorists, students will learn how to mix and paint clean, transparent, and vibrant watercolors. Topics will include elements of good composition, values, and the importance of light in your paintings .The class will also feature a step-by-step demo of a colorful fall scene that participants can follow, and the each individual will work on a painting of their choice by using their own photos or reference materials with one-on-one feedback. WATERCOLOR PROBLEM SOLVINGwith Tom RyanArtist and Instructor, Tom Ryan, will review common technical mistakes made in watercolor paintings and discuss and show the best way to correct them. Exercises, demos, and individual attention are included. Each participant is asked to bring in one particular issue they are with which they are struggling and would like assistance. Learn to paint the beauty of doors and windows in this fun and creative watercolor workshop. Students will learn elements of composition and perspective, painting light and shadow, and how to render the unique beauty of doors and windows in a realistic manner. The class will begin with a demonstration by the instructor followed by class painting. A critique and class discussion will be held at the end of the session. THE FIGUREALL MEDIA PORTRAIT WORKSHOPwith Corey PitkinWorking from a live model students will receive instruction on achieving a likeness and creating the illusion of depth. This full day workshop will start with an oil painting demonstration in the morning and allow participants to work from the model with one-on-one instructor guidance in the afternoon. THE NUDEwith Corey PitkinThe practice of drawing the nude model from life has been a cornerstone of artistic development for centuries. Join artist and instructor Corey Pitkin as he peels back the mystique of this scholarly tradition. Using the media of your choice students will be guided through the process of developing a composition, capturing the gesture, determining proportions, and describing the underlying structure and anatomy from a live nude model. After a morning demonstration students will be given one-on-one guidance to bring their artwork to a finish. Students are encouraged to work in whatever medium

INTRODUCTION TO THE FIGUREwith James D’Andrea

This class is designed to help students gain a better understanding of drawing strategies and an improved confidence and sensitivity to aesthetics in the figure.

Students will focus on handling materials, observational skills, the understanding of anatomy and overall drawing proficiency. Poses will be shorter and focus on the gesture.

This course is open to every skill level but is particularly an excellent opportunity for high school students hoping to build and strengthen their portfolios. A complete supply list can be found online. Model fee is included in registration.

OPEN STUDIO FIGURE DRAWINGThe Open Studio sessions offered by Saratoga Arts are great practice for any artist interested in working from a live model, without the formality of a class. Open Studio sessions are informal group meetings where artists can talk about their work, share ideas and discuss a variety of methods and mediums. There is no teacher or moderator for these sessions. Sessions are recommended for ages 15 and up. Participants can work in the medium of their choice. Please bring your own supplies. Pre-registration is encouraged for the Open Studio sessions, but not required. Drop in rates: $12 for members / $14 for non-members or you can purchase a session and save money:

THE SCULPTED PORTRAITwith Tom O’Brien

Discover that the basic principles used in creating a 3D portrait are not so different than drawing one in 2D. Using clay to create the volume of the head, neck and shoulders with correctly placed features will produce an exhilarating portrait bust. The principles learned in this class will also help you draw better! All materials for this workshop will be provided but students are welcome to bring additional sculpting tools. Registration fee includes sculpting medium and model fee. This workshop is for students of all levels

PHOTOGRAPHY SMALL STILL LIFE PHOTOGRAPHYwith Harry WirtzIn this workshop, Harry Wirtz will teach his system of making sharp, well-lit photographs of plants, flowers, and

small artifacts for fine art or documentation. Students

will learn to control the quality of light from an affordable compact strobe with a soft box, reflectors, and other

light control accessories. Hands-on demonstrations will include photography of a small still life subject and image enhancement using Affinity Photo. Beginners are welcome,

but intermediate and advanced level photographers with a DSLR camera or high end mirrorless camera will probably benefit most from this one-day course. Students should

bring with them their camera and are welcome to bring a few small objects to possibly photograph.

Saturday, October 13: 10am–4pm$80 for members / $90 for non-members

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY with Harry Wirtz The first day of this workshop will be spent exploring your

camera’s adjustments and controls to work with light, subject

matter, and time: focus, aperture, shutter, ISO settings, and auto exposure aperture or shutter priority modes. Day one will end with putting into practice what has been covered and taking photographs in Congress Park. Day Two will be spent reviewing your photos and then seeing how basic photo editing software techniques can refine those images.

Other topics include color balance, light control accessories (including on -and off- camera flash), image file formats, and

optimizing images for print and web publication. Students should bring their camera and corresponding instruction manual.

INTRODUCTION TO HDRwith Greg Cuda HDR or High Dynamic Range Photography is simply the ability to record more detail in an photograph than a camera can normally capture. The resulting image can be a realistic representation of what the eye sees or a wildly surrealistic work of art. In this workshop, students will learn all about HDR: when to use it, how to capture it, and the software suggestions to optimize it. Students must have a basic knowledge of using a DSLR camera in order to benefit from this class. Students should bring a camera

and tripod to the workshop with them as a limited amount will be available for students to borrow.

SILVERSMITHING & METAL FABRICATION WORKSHOPwith Matt Balint

Have you been looking for that perfect piece of unique jewelry? This workshop provides an introduction to a number of techniques and approaches to two and three-dimensional design and establishes a foundation for the fabrication of jewelry with a primary focus on lamination (soldering),

piercing, bezel making, and stone setting. Participants will have the opportunity to create a pair of earrings, pendant, or ring in sterling or fine silver. All of the necessary tools will be

provided but students may bring their own stone if desired. Class size is limited to 7. There will be a $35 materials fee due to Matt at the beginning of the workshop.

EXPERIMENTAL PRINTMAKINGwith Amanda Kravolic This class will be all about experimental techniques of printmaking. Focusing on hand-pulled prints we will explore both wet and dry traditional relief printmaking techniques using all types of surfaces to create colorful works using layers, patterns, and texture. This course is great for those who enjoy painting and drawing as well as those who want to add a new medium to their list of artistic talents. Students should bring with them flat textures, such as lace, netting,

sandpaper, etc. This is a course for students of all levels and ages. A complete supply list can be found online.

PRINTMAKING HOLIDAY CARD WORKSHOPwith Amanda Kravolic We will explore traditional printmaking techniques to make holiday cards. Creating and making our own collagraph plates using a variety of mixed media and textures, you will create your own original image and learn how to ink and print the plate to create your own card. Students should bring with them flat textures, such as lace, netting,

sandpaper, etc. This workshop is open to students of all levels and ages. A complete supply list can be found online.

FRAMING ARTWORK ON A BUDGET:TOOLS FOR THE ARTISTwith Jennifer Duke AnsteyPerfect for artists interested in solutions for framing work for submission or those who need economical solutions for displaying their collection, this workshop will help teach you how to properly and creatively mat and frame your artwork without breaking the bank. Bring a piece of artwork that you

are interested in finding a framing solution for.

of class. All materials and necessary tools will be provided for student use. Finished pieces will be available for pick up about 7 - 10 days after the workshop at Saratoga Arts. All skill levels welcome!

FUSED GLASS DISH WORKSHOPwith Patrice Mastrianni Learn how to create beautiful artwork from colorful pieces of glass which are fused together in a kiln. Artist Patrice Mastrianni explains the science of fusing glass, designing with opaque and translucent colors and basic glass cutting techniques. Supply fee covers enough materials to make one 6” dish. A $20 per student supply and firing fee will be

due at the beginning of class. All materials and necessary tools will be provided for student use. Finished pieces will be available for pick up about 7 - 10 days after the workshop at Saratoga Arts. Anyone from beginner to experienced glass fusers are welcome to take this course.

SCHOOL BREAK CAMP FOR KIDSOur full-day Visual Arts school break camp for children ages 8-14 and our half-day program for children ages 5-7 are a perfect way to get kids off the couch and get them creating! Each week ends with a show of the artwork that our campers have created - friends and family are welcome to come and enjoy! During our February and April Breaks, we also offer Theater Camp where

campers work on a production from start to finish

throughout the week, with a performance for family members at the end! Taught by a faculty with over three decades of teaching experience, we strive to provide a safe and comfortable environment where our campers can truly enjoy learning about the arts.

Students wishing to register for a class or workshop can do so through our website, saratoga-arts.org/education, stopping by The Arts Center during regular business hours, mailing a registration form in to 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs 12866, or

by calling 518.584.4132. Payment for classes and workshops is due to Saratoga Arts at the time of registration. Payment, in full, must be made before the first meeting of class. Checks should be made out to Saratoga Arts.

Cancellation Policy: Students wishing to cancel a scheduled class or workshop must do so in writing, either by mail or by e-mailing [email protected]. This will allow for proper processing and proof of cancellation. There will be no exceptions to this policy. Registration is required for all classes and workshops unless otherwise specified. Our cancellation

Students who cancel one week or more before the start of a scheduled class will receive a refund of their tuition minus a $15 cancellation fee. Students who cancel less than one week before the start of a scheduled class will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given if a class is cancelled by an individual the day a class or workshop starts or after the first scheduled

class. There will be a $20.00 charge for all returned checks. The Arts Center is not responsible for classes missed due to illness or other commitments of students.

Saratoga Arts reserves the right to cancel any class due to insufficient enrollment. Students who do not wish to transfer will

receive a full credit or refund of their class tuition. If Saratoga Arts must cancel a class because it has not met minimum enrollment requirements, Saratoga Arts staff will contact registered students 24-48 hours prior to the scheduled start of the class or workshop. Students wishing to know the status of a class before then may contact Saratoga Arts via e-mail or phone.

Winter Weather Policy: Saratoga Arts follows the cancellation schedule of Saratoga Springs School District during snow days and inclement weather. For weekend workshops Saratoga Arts will cancel if the weather is deemed to dangerous to travel. You can find updates about inclement weather cancellations on all major regional radio and television stations and

websites, on Saratoga Arts’ Facebook page, and on our website, www.saratoga-arts.org. All make up classes are at the

discretion of Saratoga Arts.

WEAVING - FULLwith Nancy Sharples For both the beginner and the experienced weaver, this class focuses on the diversity of weaving techniques. Working on a 4-harness floor or table loom, projects might

include a wall hanging, scarf, table runner, or small rug. Please bring a good pair of scissors. A materials fee of about $15.00 (depending on project) will be due at first

class. Class size is limited to 11. Saratoga Arts’ Weaving

Studio is open to all registered weaving students. Weaving Studio hours are: M-F, 9am - 4:30pm and Saturdays 11am - 4:30pm.
