Dear Brothers,Last fall, I shared with you the mission, vision, and key priorities of Lambda Chi Alpha’s five-year strategic plan. In this issue I will update you on the progress we have made in each of the key priorities of the strategic plan.

Healthy Chapter EnvironmentsLast semester, nearly 90 percent of chapters across North America submitted a harm reduction report to the General Fraternity which includes information on how each chapter is taking steps to create a safer environment in the residence where undergraduates live. This was the highest rate of harm reduction reports thus far and signifies that our undergraduates are taking a greater interest in chapter safety.

TRUE Brother Initiative There are currently 33 Inner Circle chapters -- meaning they have implemented the TRUE Brother Initiative for the brothers in their bond. The staff has received petitions from three more chapters. Per the strategic plan, we hope to have 30 percent of chapters implementing the TRUE Brother Initiative by 2017. We are more than half way to reaching that goal.

Fraternal GrowthThis fall, the General Fraternity will be putting forth a tremendous effort in expanding our Fraternity to five vibrant campuses: Texas Tech University; Fresno State University; Wichita State University; South Dakota School of Mines & Technology; and Boise State University. Additionally, the average active chapter size has grown. In 2006, the average number of men in a Lambda Chi chapter was 40. Today, that number is more than 50. With a strong expansion effort and an emphasis on cultivating our existing chapters, Lambda Chi Alpha continues to spread to the lives of many young men.

Alumni Identification and TrainingOur Fraternity has been very fortunate to have a dedicated corps of alumni to assist in our outreach and operations. Last June, nearly 50 Fraternal and Master Stewards attended a three day training session in Indianapolis where they learned how to educate undergraduates on leadership skills. There were also more than 150 alumni present at the General Assembly in July. Finally, more than 1,000 alumni brothers have attended local alumni events in the last year. This outpour of alumni support shows that we have

men of all ages who are committed in aiding in the future success of Lambda Chi Alpha.

Co-Curricular FocusThe General Fraternity and partners of Lambda Chi Alpha are continuing to present data at higher education conferences and seminars including the American College Personnel Association, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, Conference on College Men, and the Association for Psychological Science. Lambda Chi Alpha is quickly becoming a leading voice in the higher education community and we continue to share knowledge to better our Fraternity.

I strongly believe that dedication to this strategic plan will guide our Fraternity into a solid future. It is through collaboration in this Fraternity that we will not only sustain our successful operations but we will continue to grow and prosper.

Regional Alumni ReceptionsThe 2011-2012 alumni reception season has concluded, and we had the ability to host approximately 700+ alumni and undergraduate brothers in 14 cities across the country. So what are these and why do we host them?The regional alumni reception serves as our ability to provide opportunities of networking and fellowship for brothers in the area to engage one another and meet members of the staff, Foundation Board of Directors, and the Grand High Zeta. This year we had the opportunity to showcase brothers who have excelled in their careers. These brothers provided insight on how Lambda Chi Alpha helped them get where they are today. Alumni Association HighlightWhat is a Regional Alumni Association?A Regional Alumni Association is specifically designated to providing networking and fellowship for all alumni, whereas a house corporation maintains the physical assets and insurance needs of a chapter house, and an alumni advisory board advises the undergraduate chapter operations in addition to the High Pi.

These regional groups are led by the Educational Foundation and are managed at the local level by key alumni volunteers. The purpose of the headquarters presence is to continue to provide a level of engagement and communication from the office to area alumni.

What do they do?The primary intent of a Regional Alumni Association is to increase the participation and interest level among regional alumni by building communication links and hosting gatherings to foster the spirit of brotherhood across North America. Each Regional Alumni Association is responsible for promoting Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity in the local community.

The reasons for participating in a Regional Alumni Association are often similar to the reason for joining Lambda Chi Alpha as an undergraduate. Some of these include social and professional networking opportunities, community service functions, and general fellowship. These are specifically broken into four major areas: loyalty, duty, service, and stewardship.

Four Areas of Regional Alumni Associations

1. Loyalty: Any event that shows the core value of Loyalty within Lambda Chi Alpha. (i.e. Hosting a dinner for local undergraduates and their parents, hosting an event for alumni new to the area)

2. Duty: Hosting events that will show pride and duty to Lambda Chi Alpha. (i.e. Attending a National HQ sponsored event or reception, participating in local chapter events, hosting an event that directly benefits the national organization, participating in the Joe Charles Mentoring Program)

3. Service: Participate and plan community service related events. (i.e. Adopt-a-Highway, Mentor/Mentee, Food Banks)

4. Stewardship: Social component of our associations. Stewarding the concept of fellowship and brotherhood. (i.e. Happy Hours, Dinner/Lunch events, Professional Networking, Sporting Events, Family Picnics)

Each of these values are represented in the types of events and gatherings that are held in the name of Lambda Chi Alpha. It is vital to remember that alumni have varying interests, sometimes based on demographics, and association’s programs differ accordingly. A Regional Alumni Association promotes “a Lifetime of True Brotherhood” no matter what chapter you are affiliated with!

Q & A with John Graham (Franklin and Marshall 1971)

On April 29, 2011, the Grand High Zeta approved a strategic plan that sets a calculated outline to fundamentally shape the young men involved in Lambda Chi Alpha.

Through a five year commitment to the strategic plan, the General Fraternity will concentrate on five key priority issues: the TRUE Brother Initiative, alumni identification and training, healthy chapter environment, co-curricular focus, and fraternal growth.

An overarching vision of the strategic plan is to lead in a co-curricular Greek movement. This vision of the strategic plan is in direct support of the TRUE Brother Initiative, a comprehensive program implemented into Lambda Chi Alpha in 2007 that actively develops and instills the Lambda Chi Alpha core values in each undergraduate member.

One of the Grand High Zeta members who unanimously approved the strategic plan last year was current Grand High Epsilon John Graham (Franklin and Marshall 1971). Graham is also the president and CEO of the Center for Association Leadership (ASAE) organization, which is comprised of more than 22,000 association executives and industry partners that represent nearly 11,000 organizations. Graham oversees a budget of $35 million and a 135 member staff. His association experience has brought a high level of professional expertise to the Grand High Zeta.

As the strategic plan continues to take root, Graham has shared his optimism about the direction the Fraternity is heading, and the steps that the Fraternity needs to take to fully implement the strategic plan by 2017.

Heading in the Right Direction


How do you describe the strategic plan?When you look at the mission and vision of Lambda Chi Alpha, the concept that stands out is the idea of true brotherhood and, to me, true brotherhood is more than just an initiative. I think it strengthens the message that Lambda Chi Alpha is working to instill leadership and value attributes in their men. While the Fraternity still needs to be social and fun, it also needs to be engaging and of value. I think Lambda Chi Alpha has been able to showcase that having these initiatives that demonstrate building an organization with values and defined leadership skills is critically important.

How does the co-curricular Greek movement relate to Lambda Chi Alpha’s strategic plan?

To me, the ‘co-curricular movement’ is an impressive title for working wtih the Fraternity and educational institutions to make the fraternal experience part of the educational experience so they consistently reinforce each other. Students have both an education curriculum and a fraternity curriculum. The education curriculum that the college or university provides enables the student to pursue the discipline of their choice. The fraternity curriculum is molded around core values and leadership abilities. I think that makes it a very powerful combination; not only are undergraduates learning their field of study, undergraduates are also learning the necessary skills to completely develop as a successful individual and an overall well-rounded human being. In my opinion, that is what the term co-curricular represents.

As a call to action for the constituents of Lambda Chi Alpha, how can alumnus and undergraduates help the General Fraternity implement the strategic plan?

The first thing everyone involved must do is understand the strategic plan. It is important to know that there is a plan, why the plan is needed, and to determine how as an individual you can help the General Fraternity achieve some of the objectives. For the Fraternity to become even more successful than it currently is, we need significantly more alumni involvement overall. And the alumni who are involved need to understand and embrace the concept of the TRUE Brother Initiative. For undergraduates, they are having those opportunities to understand what true brotherhood means; understand the values of our Fraternity; and to implement those values into their everyday lives.

As an active alumnus I knew about the TRUE Brother Initiative, but it really wasn’t something I understood until I became involved with the Grand High Zeta and I saw the Fraternity was implementing it on all fronts and taking it very seriously. I hope alumni now understand that it is incumbent upon them to learn what our Fraternity is about in 2012 and to figure out in what ways they can help.

How does this strategic plan line up with other strategic plans you have previously worked with?

Over the years strategic planning has changed dramatically, it used to be creating a three year plan and trying our best to stick to that short-term plan. Strategic planning now is more about what outcomes we are trying to accomplish and the strategies behind achieving those specific outcomes. As I look at the plan for Lambda Chi Alpha, I see that we have a defined direction and that overall direction is to get every chapter living and breathing the basic values of Lambda Chi Alpha. We also have a plan in place that allows for new chapters as well as making sure that our current chapters are continuing to follow Lambda Chi Alpha values. This strategy is going to require a significant amount of dedication, but it is where the Grand High Zeta feels we should be going.

Lambda Chi Alpha is currently involved in two long-term initiatives: the Future Leaders Campaign and the strategic plan. Why are these long-term initiatives crucial for the overall success of our organization?

The General Fraternity’s strategic plan is really its compass. The plan sets the direction for where the General Fraternity wants to go and it sets in place objectives for how we can get there. The plan will allow the team to easily measure successes and pinpoint areas of weakness. The Future Leaders Campaign that the Educational Foundation is pursuing is mostly about future sustainability. In our situation, sustainability means having the financial resources necessary to achieve the strategic plan’s objectives. In this particular case, the Foundation has set an aggressive goal of trying to have a significant number of resources in place to help the General Fraternity execute its plan. I think both the Future Leaders Campaign and the strategic plan are equally important and will rely on each other to be successful. The strategic plan is the direction in which we are going, while the Future Leaders Campaign is the financial resource necessary to accomplish it.

SOON…THE BELL LAPThank you again for being at the heart of Lambda Chi Alpha with your continued encouragement and financial support. While most of you have heard about the Foundation’s $20 million campaign, “Investing in Future Leaders,” I want to remind you of why we are taking this on.

NOW IS THE TIME to invest in our future leaders

and secure future funding for Lambda Chi Alpha. This investment will provide resources now, and endowment funds for programs that will benefit undergraduates of today and tomorrow beyond their college years—just like Lambda Chi Alpha has benefitted brothers for over a century.

TODAY, LIKE NEVER BEFORE, the Fraternity is stepping up its game by keeping seven core values constantly before the eyes of our students: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Service and Stewardship, Honor, Integrity, Personal Courage. The primary purposes of the campaign are built around this focus. Essentially, the Foundation is primarily seeking:

• $5 million to endow initiatives and programs creating and maintaining top quality, professional, educational approaches to Lambda Chi Alpha’s values-based brand of leadership development.

• $5 million to endow the vehicles to deliver this values-

based education...educational conferences like leadership seminars, general assemblies, and conclaves; and more localized opportunities for chapters at their own campuses through retreats and hands-on consulting.

• $4 million for permanent, long-term funding to create flexibility to impact new and expanded programs in the future to assure three things continue for generations: Growth of our brotherhood; Quality of programs and conferences; Access to affordable innovative leadership development for all student members.

The “Investing in Future Leaders” campaign has already doubled the amount of money raised for Lambda Chi Alpha from any prior campaign...but, we are building to a successful conclusion one alumni brother at a time.

Our campaign has reached $13.6 million in total gifts committed and dollars raised. Month by month, a growing number of alumni brothers are making their commitments to the future of our Fraternity.

Continuing the race with great strides toward the exciting future of our Fraternity.

Even with all of the great giving news there is to share, there is more!

We are not waiting until the campaign ends to see the benefits. During the first eight months of 2012, I am pleased to share there has been much accomplished.

In January, we helped underwrite some valuable training for 90 alumni advisors, most of who were first time attendees; and this winter and spring 600 student leaders attended regional conclaves, assisted by your financial support.

The Fraternity is strong, closing out the school year with 195 chapters and nearly 11,000 student members. For the last six years Lambda Chi Alpha has been growing and well run financially.

Statistics gathered relative to the True Brother Initiative continue to be impressive. Our leading chapters which have embraced our core values and are recruiting men who share them have seen steady growth. More importantly, while an “initiation ratio” (the percentage of associate members who are initiated) of 87% - 7 of 8 – has always been the mark of strong chapters, our best chapters are now initiating more than 92% of their men. Chapters with strong, shared values, which recruit men based on these criteria, are recruiting a more solid group of men who stay the course through initiation.

We are doing exciting things to engage young alumni as an outreach of the campaign. The Foundation has identified communication challenges that have hindered our outreach to this generation, which in turn, has re-focused our overall outreach to alumni. Contacts for relationship building started with our annual “graduating senior email” that went out to approximately 2,000 new graduates last month. The focus of this email was to provide a “value add” and takeaway to prepare our graduating brothers to look forward into their careers while continuing to find value in their membership with Lambda Chi Alpha. The next step consists of a survey and focus groups that will identify the wants and needs of our young alumni. This step will encourage self-organized alumni groups to provide face-to-face personal contact among alumni in their area. Lambda Chi Alpha will ultimately see an upward shift in focus in our engagement with our young alumni. This work will provide a formal process in how we engage and ultimately solicit young alumni for financial support.

620 alumni attended events in 17 cities ranging from small luncheons to receptions engaging 70 or more brothers. These men came seeking fellowship and to reconnect with the Fraternity. They left as more informed advocates about Lambda Chi Alpha today.

It consists of nine members elected by the General Assembly to fill alternating four-year terms: one or two alumni members appointed by the Grand High Zeta to fill two-year terms; the chairman and vice chairman of the Student Advisory Committee to serve one-year terms as Grand High Sigma and Grand High Theta, respectively; and the chairman and vice chairman of the Council of Presidents to serve one-year terms as Grand High Nu and Grand High Psi, respectively. Outstanding UndergraduatePatrick Vining (Southeast Missouri State 2013)

Patrick Vining (Southeast Missouri State 2013) was honored with the Cyril F. “Duke” Flad Outstanding Undergraduate Award, the highest honor bestowed upon an undergraduate. He won this award based upon the leadership he has displayed at his chapter, on his campus, and throughout his community. At the Delta-Phi chapter, Vining has served as the recruitment chairman, treasurer, Executive Committee secretary, by-law review committee chair, and IFC representative. As treasurer, he helped initiate a capital campaign that is

raising money to make improvements to the chapter house. As recruitment chairman, he was responsible for recruiting the largest freshman class to join his chapter in more than a decade. He achieved this task by developing a strategic recruitment plan before he took office that was grounded in values-based recruitment practices. In addition to Vining’s tireless efforts as a chapter officer, he also has shown he can support his brothers on a deeper level. Last spring, the chapter experienced a tragedy -- the death of one of their brothers from cancer. When they needed comfort and leadership, Vining was among one of the members to step forward. In true Lambda Chi fashion, the men transformed a tragedy into a cause. So far, the chapter has raised more than $10,000 to benefit cancer research and the family of their deceased brother, Scott Wood. Vining has played a significant role in these efforts. Outside of the chapter, he is actively involved in numerous activities and initiatives on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University. This year, brother Vining will serve his second term as the president of the student government association. In this position, he has played an instrumental role in ensuring student tuition does not increase in light of 12 percent budget cuts which his university is currently facing. He has also improved the communication between the student body and the community’s city council. Vining was also the president of the model United Nations at his campus, president of the residence hall association, and member of the hall council and college republicans. Vining is also a volunteer with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, St. Jude’s Hospital, the Special Olympics, the American Red Cross, Cape police and fire departments, the Salvation Army, and the Southeast Missouri Food Bank. Along with the numerous activities Brother Vining is involved in, he has managed to achieve academic excellence with a cumulative GPA of 3.9 on a 4.0 scale, earning him consecutive spots on the dean’s list since he first enrolled at Southeast Missouri State University and making him a recipient of the governor’s scholarship, the highest scholarship award at his university. Because of his academic success and consistent leadership among his peers, it is not a wonder that Brother Vining was named the “2011 Man of the Year” on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.

Outstanding Greek AdvisorKeith Ellis (Memphis 2002) Keith Ellis, the Associate Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at the University of South Carolina, was named the 2012 Greek Advisor of the Year for Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and was initiated at the University of Memphis where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in 2002. Two years he later graduated from the University of Kansas with a master’s degree in Higher Education. He was able to bring his expertise in the Greek system and higher learning to the

University of Kentucky where he worked in the Dean of Student’s Office. He would eventually serve as the associate Director of Fraternity and Sorority life at the University of South Carolina. In his campus leadership roles, Ellis has been a strong supporter of Lambda Chi Alpha, teaching undergraduates to rely on their core values and stand up for what they believe is right. His interaction with Lambda Chi Alpha staff members has played a crucial role in maintaining the excellent standards our Fraternity sets forth. Keith is well-respected in the field and Lambda Chi Alpha is very honored to have him as a supporter. Ellis is currently working on his doctorate through the University of Kentucky in Education Policy and Evaluation.

As a recipient of this publication, you have shown your commitment to our great Fraternity through your philanthropic giving. Your engagement and involvement has led you to give monetarily to a cause that provides you with countless opportunities throughout your lifetime. The Foundation has recognized this and has committed ourselves to the Alumni Experience and to ensure that it is one of the most influential and beneficial aspects of brotherhood within our bond. As we all know, the doors were opened to this experience when we received our bid, signed it, and began our journey through life as a brother of Lambda Chi Alpha. After the traditional undergraduate takes his first step off of campus, he enters into a world where he will need the guidance and assistance of his brothers across North America. It is for this reason that the Foundation is committed to ensuring that our brothers who have recently graduated feel as if Lambda Chi Alpha is part of their daily life.

Recently, the Foundation entered into an engagement initiative directed toward its millennial and young alumni constituency (ages 20-35) to assist them as they begin their journey through life as an alumnus. Since entering into this commitment, the Foundation has identified communication barriers that have hindered our outreach to this generation, which in turn, has re-focused our overall outreach strategy to this generation of brothers.

This initiative is being conducted in stages and the end goal is three-fold: Contact Acquisition, Engagement, and Solicitation.

Contact Acquisition started with our annual “Graduating Senior Email” that went out to approximately 2,000 graduating seniors. This email sparked a “Lessons on Leadership” video campaign that consisted of Foundation Board Chairman, Jerre Stead, and his speech from the 2011 Stead Leadership Seminar. The focus of this email was to provide a “value-add” and takeaway to prepare our graduating seniors to look forward into their careers while continuing to find value in their membership with Lambda Chi Alpha. The goal of this is to encourage graduating seniors and young alumni to update their contact information on the MyLCA portal, and follow Lambda Chi Alpha by receiving the Cross & Crescent monthly publication and following our social media outlets. Throughout the next several months, we will be


identifying different ways in which we will continue the Contact Acquisition phase by providing different

“value-add” content and generate passive interest through different levels of communication (i.e. Newsletters, Social Media, Hard Mailings).

The next step consisted of a survey and focus groups that identified the wants and needs of our young alumni. The purpose of this was to learn their philanthropic involvement, giving habits, and ways in which they measure involvement with a nonprofit. This step will encourage self-organized alumni groups to provide face-to-face contact amongst alumni in their area, and also attend Foundation sponsored alumni events. This Engagement will drive more online program content that can focus outwardly and provide career resources and ways to stay engaged with Lambda Chi Alpha (i.e. Alumni Associations, Mentoring, and Giving).

Finally, based on our research and engagement, a Solicitation is the last step. Research has shown that this generation has and will make a great impact

philanthropically throughout time. In order to provide a level of commitment to the organization, the Foundation has re-focused its efforts to effectively provide this generation of brothers with more influence in the way we communicate with our brothers and ultimately shape the way giving looks. With more time, the Foundation hopes

to increase the number of young alumni donors exponentially by optimizing the online giving process and ensuring that all of our donors know how their gift is being used to benefit our undergraduate brothers across North America.

Lambda Chi Alpha will ultimately see a shift in focus in our engagement with our Young Alumni. This work will provide a formal process in how we acquire information, engage, and involve our young alumni brothers. Remember, although it seems as if there is a significant focus on the younger generation, the purpose is to steward them to become involved and engaged alumni throughout their lifetime. We continually need your help as we work diligently to provide you with a lifelong experience as a brother in Lambda Chi Alpha.

Akron (Gamma-Alpha)At the Greek Awards ceremony, the chapter won the Scholastic Achievement Award, Campus/Greek Involvement Award, Recruitment Excellence Award and Interfrateral Award. For the second year in a row, the chapter won the Dean’s Cup for chapter excellence as the top fraternity on campus. On April 14, 2012, the chapter held an Initiation Ritual

Exemplification for five brothers. After winning best choreography and best male solo, the chapter earned third place overall at the 79th Greek Life Songfest. On April 21, 2012, the chapter held its 40th annual Bath Tub Pull charity event, which raised money for The Akron Humane Society and the Akron Rotary Camp for children with special needs.

was named Most Outstanding Chapter President and Greek Man of the Year. Abdullah Al-Gannass, Rob Wians, Justin Owens, and Tripp Ference were inducted into Gamma Sigma Alpha honor society. The chapter completed its spring philanthropy, Rockathon, benefiting the National MS Society.

Alberta (Epsilon-Rho) The chapter was named runner-up for the Campus Engagement Award. The chapter completed more than twice the number of philanthropy hours than any other Greek organization on campus. The chapter had brothers elected to the Student Council, Greek Honorary society and Order of Omega. Kevin Smith received the Greek of the Year Award, while Kyle Brant received the Honorable Mention. This honor is for excellence in community service, academics, and campus leadership.

Angelo State (Beta-Alpha)On April 21, 2012, the Beta Alpha Alumni Association co-sponsored the 2012 White Rose Formal for undergraduate and alumni brothers. The event consisted of dinner, an awards ceremony, and a grand brotherhood experience of new and old chapter brothers.

Auburn – Montgomery (Phi-Kappa)The chapter held its annual Teeter-Totter Marathon, benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The event consisted of 72 hours of teeter-tottering and the event raised more than $1,000. The local news covered the event and Josh Oates was interviewed by NBC-affiliate, WSFA-TV, during the 11 p.m. broadcast. Brothers participated in a low-ropes course on campus as part of a brotherhood event. During Greek Week, chapter brothers participated in several events and Josh Oates was selected as the winner of the Greek God competition. Chapter brothers participated in Zeta Tau Alpha’s Kicking Out Cancer kickball tournament winning first place.

Butler (Alpha-Alpha)At the Greek Excellence Awards, the chapter won the Outstanding Educational Programming Award, Outstanding New Member Education & Programming Award, Outstanding Philanthropy and Service Award, and the Innovation Award for an innovative new academic program. ews Coe (Zeta-Alpha)

The chapter participated in the Spring 500, a community service event to help elderly people around the Cedar Rapid’s area with yard maintenance tasks such as raking leaves, cleaning windows, pulling weeds, and getting rid of yard waste.

Chapter brothers participated in a charity event to support Waypoint of Cedar Rapids,

a shelter for women, children and families in need of help. The event raised nearly $250.

Denison (Gamma-Iota)The chapter won the Fraternal Commitment Award, the top prize from the Greek Awards. Joe Romanowski was named the Best President and Greek Man of the Year. He also received an honorable mention for Greek Athlete of the Year. Patrick White won the Best New Member Award. Alex Daniels was the only male to win the Distinguished Leadership Award. Dr. Woodyard was named the Top Greek Advisor while Fraternity Advisor Bill Froehlich won a prize for alumni involvement. The chapter also received the award for the most improved GPA.

Georgetown (Kappa-Omega)For the 13th time in 16 years, the chapter was awarded the President’s Cup as the best fraternity on campus. The chapter received outstanding remarks in four out of five categories, which included Academics, Community Service, Philanthrophy, and Educational Programs. Chapter President Ross Buskey was named Greek Man of the Year and Todd Bixler was named Greek Athlete of the Year. Bixler is a member of both track and cross-country teams. In only his first year in office, Chapter Advisor Alan Redditt received the Outstanding Advisor Award.

Georgia Tech (Beta-Kappa)On March 10, 2012, more than 40 alumni brothers attended the chapter’s St. Baldrick’s Celebration, benefiting childhood cancer research. Thirty-eight brothers shaved their heads in

The chapter won Greek Week and took first place in three of the five events. The chapter remained undefeated in intramural soccer. Alumni Brother Scott Ezell has agreed to become the chapter’s faculty advisor. Chapter brothers participated in Relay for Life, raising money for the fight against cancer. Michael Williams was nominated for Greek Man of the Year while freshman Dylan Clark was nominated for Greek Scholar of the Year.

Montevallo (Sigma-Epsilon)Chapter President Josh Womack won the the title of Mr. Montevallo during the homecoming celebration.

Rose-Hulman (Theta-Kappa)During this year’s charity event, Run For Kids’ Sake, the chapter raised nearly $3,000. These funds benefit the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Vigo County. Run For Kids Sake has been a charity event of the chapter for the past 41 years and this year included a 3K/5K and walk/run events.

South Dakota (Alpha-Gamma)Chapter President Tyler Tordsen was elected to the Student Advisory Committee for the Great Plains Conclave. The chapter held an Easter Egg Hunt for a local daycare center. The chapter organized food drives, raising more than 2,000 pounds for the Vermillion Food Pantry. Austin Nelson received a scholarship award for his summer internship at the state prison last summer. The chapter won the Award for Fraternal Excellence at the university’s annual Leadership and Service Awards. The award is presented each year to the one nationally affiliated Greek fraternity or sorority that symbolizes the excellence of the Greek system. The chapter was recognized for having the highest GPA on campus among fraternities, for its work with the North American Food Drive, for the development and implementation of a Bastrop Relief Effort for victims of last year’s Texas wildfires, and for the Fraternity’s non-hazing stance. During the ceremony, chapter President Anthony Linder was recognized for co-

coordinating the Tarleton Round-up event. Round-up is an annual, campus-wide community service project. Because of Linder’s leadership, this year’s round-up fielded nearly 600 volunteers who spread out across the community to perform everyday household tasks for elderly and disabled citizens, such as raking leaves, painting, yard work, and cleaning.

2011-2012 Intramural Champions recognition, and Fraternity of the Year for the second consecutive year. The chapter raised more than $8,000 for the Chattanooga Food Bank. The chapter held a BBQ For a Cure at the chapter house with proceeds going to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Texas-Austin (Alpha-Mu)Chapter brothers helped plant trees at the Dell Children’s Medical Center. The chapter’s application for the Adopt-A-Street program was approved. It grants the chapter the

responsibility of maintaining a section of roadway near the University of Texas campus.

Towson (Phi-Omega)The chapter hosted its annual Luau Philanthropy Week to raise money for the Special Olympics. The week included a Monday dinner, a banner contest, a community service trip to the Tulsa food bank, and a volleyball tournament featuring matches between the local police/fire departments and between the chapter/campus police. The event raised approximately $2,200. At the IFC awards banquet, the chapter won the Circle of Excellence Award for Responsibility, an honor bestowed on the Greek chapter that has demonstrated exceptional risk management policies. In addition, Jake Turner (2014) was presented with the Greek Man of the Year Award.

cumulative GPA. The chapter also held a volleyball tournament in early April, co-sponsored by Delta Zeta sorority. The event raised $2,300 for the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund. Three chapter brothers helped plan a 5k run for a local Community Care Center. On March 24, 2012, more than 40 chapter brothers participated in the university’s largest philanthropy event, Wake ‘N Shake. At these events, participants danced for 12 hours to raise money for cancer research.

Washington (Alpha-Psi)Approximately 85 brothers attended the Founders Day celebration on April 13, 2012. At this year’s annual event Steve Pelluer, former professional quarterback for the

Washington Redskins, the Dallas Cowboys and the Kansas City Chiefs, was the keynote speaker. The highlight of the program was a celebration of the Order of Merit, awarded to Don Hart for his 66 years of continuous service to the chapter since his initiation in 1946. Presentations included letters from Fraternity Board Chairman Drew Hunter and Fraternity Board Vice Chairman Greg Smith. Endowed Scholarships were presented to Arnold Rosario, Nick Potter and Chris Karns.

I was humbled when I received the school year closing report, collected by the General Fraternity, which showed how many young men have benefited—or in Karl’s words, “helped to be successful”- from your money given to the Fraternity. It showed that 9,084 men were

“served”—the word the staff team uses—in very hands-on ways through the Stead Leadership Seminar, regional conclaves, the Joe Charles Mentor Leadership Program, other area gatherings, and chapter retreats and extended visits of assistance. This number does not consider the 90 alumni who attended the Neville Advisors College in January (and who influence thousands of brothers a year), nor does it include the dozens of students who received direct financial assistance with school costs.

It’s pretty amazing to contemplate that the average gift amount to our foundation last year was $253, and that a gift like that can contribute to ALL OF THE ABOVE happening. If I can maybe coin a new phrase: “That is the magnifying effect of brotherhood.” First, however, let me be clear that I don’t find anything AVERAGE about these gifts to Lambda Chi Alpha. They are exceptional! And, yes, we all know that each and every gift has been part of that magnifier, not just those at this “average” level. Hence, the big THANK YOU going out to you in this magazine.

In the year ahead, however, we intend to push higher. Lambda Chi Alpha is a very ambitious fraternity which suffers from what past Grand High Alpha Lewis A. Plourd referred to 40 years ago as “incurable idealism.”


In the year ahead, hundreds of you reading this, generally those who made that “average” gift of $253 or more, will be invited to become part of the new “Charter Circle” of the alumni foundation. This will require a $1,000 or more annual investment, but we hope those who choose to help make our younger brothers more successful in this way, will find it also makes you feel more connected with and informed about your fraternity. It will absolutely expand the “magnifier.”
