Influence… Now that’s an interesting word. The dictionary defines it as “The capacity of per-sons or things to be a compelling force.” But what about the idea of influence as it relates to the Church? At our District Coun-cil a few months ago, dur-i n g t h e o p e n i n g n i g h t I s p o k e o n “ T h e C h u r c h -His Cause, Our Mission.” If you weren’t there, you can go to our website to listen to the full message. There were four key words that I used to challenge us to consider our mission, which were Awareness, Awakening, Alignment and Actualization. In order to help us process these, the following questions were posed for us all to consider.

• How long has it been since you had a face to face, one on one, conversation with God about you and your church?• Is there an alarm in your heart calling you to awaken to what God wants to say to you about your church and ministry?• If God was writing a letter

to you today about your church, what would He write about?• Is the church you lead or serve fulfilling the mission God has given to us?

In Matthew 5, Jesus says that we are, “the salt of the earth and the light of the world!” Now that’s influence! In Acts 1:8, Je-sus says, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Then following Pentecost, we see the church’s influence as an incredible compelling force released through the people of God. We see it through Phillip in Gaza, Peter in Caesarea, Paul in Antioch, Paul and Barnabas in Lystra, Paul in Thessalonica, etc. Obviously time and space don’t permit us to tell these stories. But what about the sto-ries of the church’s influence in your community? While our churches and communities vary greatly in size, every church can be and is called to be a church of

influence.

• We have the message of hope. Proclaim it!• W e a r e t h e l i g h t o f t h eworld. Shine!• He f irst loved us. Show His love!• He has empowered us. Be His witness!• Opportunities are every-where. Make a difference!• We are God’s people. Be the church!

Churches, they come in all shapes and sizes and forms and styles. But the challenge is the same for us all, wherever God has placed us…Let ’s be The Church, a church of influence!

Every church can be and is called

to be a church of influence.

SECRETARY-TREASURER MARCUS McCLAIN

I am certain by now that you are aware of the controversy that has occurred because Dan Cathy, President and CEO of ‘Chick-fil-A,’ spoke person- ally of his support for a Biblical marriage model. The national media, pol- i t ica l pundits , and those self-appointed cultural com-mentators who believe that they are the voice for societa l standards have weighed-in on the subject with their predictable talking points. It seems as of late that the Body of Christ, the Church, is no longer surprised at the behavior of the world but the world is certainly surprised, shocked, indignant, and even outraged if and when the Body of Christ, the Church chooses to express itself. Certainly, if we behave by their definition of tolerance we would have to remain silent or even worse: surrender to the world’s influence and begin to adopt their conversation, wor-ship, attitude and appearance. Then, and only then would they be ‘comfortable’ with us.

The Body of Christ, the Church, has always faced the challenge of “being in the world, but not of it” (2 Corinthians 6:14-18). That is never truer than today. In a torrid season of change when just about “any-thing goes” we need to be reflec-tive of some time-proven if not eternally expedient principles from God’s Word. First, we need to remember that what we do in our physical body and with our body needs to proceed only after

we ask permission from God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Secondly, we need to be extremely careful that we do not do anything that might cause someone to lose faith (1 Corinthians 8:9). Third-ly, remember to be conscious of what and who we worship (Ro-mans 12:1-2). My mother told us when we were kids growing up in the ‘parsonage’ while trying to shape our character this simple little phrase. “Don’t go where you wouldn’t take Jesus, don’t say anything that you wouldn’t want Jesus to hear, and only do things Jesus would approve

of.” I used to think that state-ment was too restrictive; I have lived to learn that what she was providing was solid counsel for maturation. Sharon and I live in the shadow of a tourist mecca. We can always pick out the tourists because they stand out. They look different; they talk differ-ent; they are obviously not from northern New Mexico. Well, similar to out-of-place tourists, the Word of God tells us that this is not our home, that we are cit-izens of heaven, aliens if you wish. Shouldn’t the Body of Christ, the Church, have a vocabulary that is different, a look that reflects righteousness, a behavior that models Jesus, and priorities that rever- ence our Heavenly Fa- ther? As the Body of Christ, the Church, contends with the immense changes and challeng-es of the 21st century—just like Dan Cathy did when he took a stand for righteousness—let us hold true and faithful to God’s Word, the love of His Son, and the Power of His Spirit. As al-ways, God Bless You Big!

The Body of Christ, the Church, has always

faced the challenge of “being in the world

but not of it.”

NM MINISTRY NETWORKYOUTH.DAY9/16/12

The New Mexico Ministry Network places a high priority on student ministry. We not only want to be a part of ministry to students, but ministry through students as well. Here in New Mexico we have a variety of churches, youth groups and Network youth events that are worth celebrating. Please join us across New Mexico as we celebrate our annual Youth Day on September 16th, 2012.

As you celebrate the ministry to youth and the youth in ministry, don’t forget to honor and affirm those who participate in these ministries. Many of those who serve give large amounts of time, money, and effort to make a difference. Based on the monetary reward, they obviously don’t do it for praise. Honoring them is obviously the right thing to do.

Much of the youth ministry connection and many of the large events in New Mexico exist because of New Mexico Student Ministries. Please make Youth Day a day of partnership by receiving an offering in your church for New Mexico Student Ministries. Your financial partnership is what allows the New Mexico Ministry Network to continue to focus on developing ministry to and through the youth of our state.
