For Your Information:Sorry, the course is full: Staff review the waitlists on a continuous basis and make efforts

to accommodate everyone interested in the course. Please add your name to the waitlists for our classes so that you won’t be disappointed.

Oops, changed your plans need to transfer? A $5.00 transfer fee for anyone wishing to transfer.There are

special cancellation policies for fitness passes and fitness consults.

Program minimum ages: For the enjoyment of all participants, children must be the

correct age prior to the first class of the program.

Oh-oh, we had to cancel: If a minimum number of registrants is not met, we may have to

cancel or combine classes. If the Department cancels program activities a complete refund will be issued. These decisions are made up to a week prior to the start date, so please register early to avoid disappointment.

Financial assistance required? If you find it difficult to participate in programs because of

financial limitations, please speak with our facility staff as we want everyone to participate! See pg. 35 for more information.

Oh-no, you have to cancel? We require 24 hours notice for cancellations. All refunds will

be pro-rated 24 hours from the date of notification. A $10 administration fee will be charged for each requested refund.

All refund requests should be in writing.

FAMILY GYM BIRTHDAY PARTIESLet us make your next birthday party “a piece of cake”! We will look after the planning, supervision, organize games, activities and clean up the mess. Parties are 90 minutes long. Families are welcome to arrive 30 minutes before the party to set up and stay 30 minutes at the end to say good-byes. We require a minimum of two week’s notice to book a party.

ECE educators, Carolyn Sharpe and Claudia Sylvester, create a safe environment for your child to make play choices, to experience art using natural and recycled materials, painting and drawing, cutting and gluing, sand and water and an imaginative play area. Daily preschool routine starts with free play choices, then snack, outside play in the enclosed garden and ends with circle time songs, stories and games.

FITNESS APPRAISALS A Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness and Lifestyle Appraisal will assist you in your quest to increase your fitness level and become healthier by:

• gathering personal information • administering a health related Fitness Appraisal and interpreting results • evaluating alternatives for change and developing a personal action plan

Join 50+ Active Living and integrate healthy activities into your daily life. We enjoy comfortable, accessible facilities at the downtown Community Centre and the Sportsplex in Willow Point Park.

vOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES50+ members who volunteer to lead free drop in programs are essential for the operation of free drop in activities. All volunteers are registered with the City of Campbell River Recreation and Culture Department. Application and criminal record check forms (required) are available at the Community Centre office.

FALL FUNDRAISERSFall is the busiest time for fundraisers and we have added something new: A GIANT Indoor Garage Sale on Oct 1. Tables will be sold to members and the public. Annual sales are the Christmas Bazaar on Nov 5 and Toy & Craft Show on Nov 26 & 27. Funds are raised for drop in programs, socials, new equipment and special events. All members can choose to contribute by donating baking, knitting, quilts, crafts and new items for Auction. Many volunteers are needed to work at each fundraising event.

Our Skate park opened in 2008. Open year round for public use. Helmets are available for people to borrow. Please see a Skate Park Host to borrow a helmet or the Sportsplex front desk. Hosts supervise the park at various times for a schedule call 250-923-7911.

The Campbell River Skate park is one of the premier skate parks on the island. The Park includes all of the standard features for skaters and bikers as well as a Taco feature and one of the largest bowl features in the northwest. The park is designed to accommodate novice skaters, experts and BMX bikes.

CR Skate Park

Discovery Pier 700 Block, Island HighwayThis award winning wheelchair accessible salt water fishing pier is 600 ft. long and is located parallel to the government harbour break-water. Operator Ben Luck offers a concession May 1 to Sept. 30 for refreshments and gear rentals. Designed for year round use.

McIvor Lake Highway 28, Gold RiverSwimming and fishing. Three beaches. Two safe swimming areas (No lifeguard on duty). Boat launch. Walking trails.

Cooper’s Hawk Disc Golf Course The Campbell River Cooper’s Hawk 18 Hole Disc Golf Course is

located in Willow Point Park. Disc rentals are available at the Sportsplex office. Pay $10 down for each disc (cash or credit card) and you will get an $8 refund when you return the disc. General all-purpose discs are on sale at the Sportsplex for $10 each.

Sand volleyball CourtsThere are four sand volleyball courts located on the north side of the Sportsplex, available for public use. Loaner volleyballs available at the Sportsplex front desk. Funded in part by CRUSH Volleyball Club.

Tennis CourtsCampbell River has 10 tennis courts. Willow Point Park has four lighted courts and a practice wall. Light Tokens can be purchased at the Sportsplex $5 for 60 minutes. Centennial Park has 4 courts and a practice wall and Robron Park has 2 courts.

Outdoor Ball Hockey CourtThe outdoor ball hockey court is located in the bottom parking lot at Willow Point Park and can be used free of charge by the whole family. Participants need to bring their own equipment.

BocceThere are two bocce courts located between diamonds 1 & 3 in Willow Point Park (off Parkway Road), available for public use. Key sign out at the Sportsplex front desk. Funded in part by the Campbell River Italian Cultural Society.

Centennial Outdoor Pool June-AugustOpen June-August. For further information on our pool contact the Sportsplex at 250-923-7911.

Lacrosse BoxLocated in Robron Park. Opened in 2011. It is a fully fenced facility. Funded in part by the CR Box Lacrosse Association.

JumpStart is a community-based charitable program that helps kids in financial

need participate in organized sport and recreation. To request funding for a

program complete an application form which is available at the Sportsplex or

Community Centre.

KIDSPORT ™ SO ALL KIDS CAN PLAY! 6-18 YearsAt KidSport™ we believe that no child should be left on the sidelines. That’s why KidSport™ eliminates the financial barriers to sport participation. KidSport™ is a community-based sport charity that provides grants for Canadian children age 6 to 18 to participate in a recognized sport, led by a qualified coach. The sport must be affiliated with a member organization of Sport BC and must be a member of the Campbell River KidSport™ organization. Grants

have a cap of $200 per year, per child. To apply go to:

L.I.F.E. Financial assistance that provides free and discounted rates for admissions and registered programs available to low income families and individuals.

Qualify LIFE is for Campbell River residents with a combined gross family income below Statistics Canada Love Income Cut Off (table on application form).

Apply At the Community Centre, Sportsplex or Strathcona Gardens if you think your family qualifies. One application form per family covers all members. Provide proof of Campbell River or Area D residency (such as a Utility bill with your address) and proof of income (such as Revenue Canada Assessment).

Receive One LIFE card per family member from City of Campbell River Recreation & Culture and one LIFE card per family member from Strathcona Regional District. All family members must be present to receive their photo card.

Conditions Application must be made every calendar year. Registration policies, cancelation policies and transfer fees apply. If anyone other than the cardholder uses the card, it will be destroyed and LIFE assistance will end. Materials, manuals, books and supplies to attend discounted programs are the responsibility of the LIFE member.

DROP-IN PROGRAMSAdult Skate & Pond Hockey - this time is for adults only. the leisure ice and a portion of arena #2 will be set up for an adult skate while another portion of the arena will be set up for a fun game of pond hockey. We have a wide selection of music to choose from including music from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. If you are playing hockey you must wear your helmet. Drop-in Hockey - full hockey gear and helmet required. Participants must sign in and pay at the reception area – remember to include your jersey color and #. Please be aware of the age categories: 16 & over, 55 & over and 65 & over.

Everyone Welcome Skate - all ages welcome. Pond hockey is only avail-able during designated times. Skate rentals are available. If your skating time says “leisure ice” discount rates are in effect because only the leisure ice area is open.

Pond Hockey - all ages welcome unless otherwise specified! A soft puck will be used and a portion of the rink will be coned off for participants to play pond hockey. Parent & Tot Skating Lessons - 2-5 year olds plus an adult: Enjoy playing a variety of games on the ice with your child while you both develop your skating skills. No previous skating experience is required for the child or their parent/guardian – the emphasis of this program is fun. Participants (adult & child) must supply their own helmets and an adult must accompany the child on the ice.

**Parent & Tot Hockey Lessons - 2-5 year olds plus an adult: Parents and tots will get a chance to develop both their skating and hockey skills during this program. Lots of fun for all.

Dash & Splash - Swimming & Skating LESSON COMBO - 2 lessons for 1 great price. 3-5 year olds for weekday classes & 2-5 year olds plus an adult for weekend classes: Want your preschooler to develop both their swimming and skating skills? This is a great program that combines both activities in one trip to the facility. The first ½ hour is spent on the leisure ice with a skating instructor, parents then have 15 minutes to help their child get changed and head to the pool for a swimming lesson for another ½ hour. Great deal and time saver. Parent participation required for Saturday parent & tot classes. Polar Bears on Tuesdays from 12:30-1:45 pm for Beginner Skaters and Penguins on Tuesdays from 1:15-2:30pm for skaters with some experience.

Ice Quest Learn To Skate ProgramPreschool option for ages 3-5, School age/Homeschool option for ages 6+: Ice Quest is our Learn to Skate Program for school-aged children. these lessons are designed with the beginner in mind! Our six-step program offers an introduction into the world of ice-skating. Participants must supply their own helmets.

***Little Rascals Hockey - 3-5 year olds: Learn basic hockey skills and play a real hockey game every class! Coaches will introduce your child to the world of hockey through drills and skill development. All participants must be able to skate on their own. Little Rascals will be playing during the intermission at the Storm Games on Nov. 25 & Jan. 27. All Little Rascal participants and their families from the 2011-2012 season are invited to the Wrap Up Party on March 29th from 5:30-7:30 pm – please register for this free event at the front desk. Please sign up each family member that will be having snacks and/or skating.

**Coolest Game on Earth – Intro to Hockey - 6 & up: If you have never played ice hockey this is the program for you. Learn basic hockey skills and have fun. All participants must be able to skate on their own.

**Puck Shooting Lessons - 6 & up: Learn about stick handling, passing and the 4 shots used in hockey. Participants must have basic hockey skills before signing up for this program.

**Girls Only Hockey Skills - 6 & up: An ice slot for practicing stick handling, passing and shooting. Instructors will organize drills that will help hockey players improve their game. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice.

***Skating Skills for Hockey players - 6 & up: this program is targeted at young hockey players that love the game but their skating skills could use some tweaking. Guaranteed to improve your crossovers, edge control and backwards skating. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice.

**Women’s Intro to Hockey - 12 & up: the purpose of this program is to introduce women to the basic skills, to make new friends and to try the game without having to make a commitment to the entire season. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice.

**Adult Learn to Play - 15 & up: Come and experience the game of hockey like never before! Our qualified instructors will instruct the basic skills in a fun, creative, non-competitive and non-contact environment. Each session will include supervised instruction and plenty of game play. this program is designed for both men and women aged 15+ who do not regularly play hockey, but would like to learn. Program will take place on the Leisure Ice.

Private Lessons - all ages welcome: Want to learn how to skate or work on your hockey skills? Private lessons only cost $17.50 per ½ hour and semi-private lessons cost $13.00 per ½ hour per person. Please call 287-9234 ext. 231 to book your time.

SKATING SCHOOL BUS Grades 1-6Check out this new afterschool program being offered to kids in local schools. This is your chance to get a ride to the rink for some fun skating with friends or playing pond hockey with your buddies. Participants must bring their own helmet and gloves to skate. Children will be supervised by skate shop staff while they skate/play pond hockey. Registration must be done prior to 12noon on the day of desired pick up and pick up time from the rink is 5pm each day. Please indicate at the time of registration if your child needs a booster seat and send your child with a nutritious afterschool snack. The Junior Lifeguard Club offers a unique aquatic alternative for those kids who really love the water. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion includes the CPR-A certification.

BRONZE CROSSBronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD SERvICE (NLS)Recognized as the standard measurement of lifeguarding performance in Canada, the NLS program develops a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment and communication skills, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard. the NLS lifeguard's primary role is to prevent injuries (and when necessary, effectively manage emergencies) and to facilitate a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience. AqUATIC FITNESS ADAPTIvE MODULEthis course is for trained instructors wanting to work with and teach aquatic fitness classes to groups with various chronic conditions (i.e. Parkinson’s disease, MS, post polio, hip/knee replacements etc.). this course includes classroom and practical study. Be prepared to be in the pool for up to five hours over the weekend.

BCRPA FITNESS TO MUSIC MODULEthis course includes classroom and practical applications for teaching a basic fitness class. STANDARD FIRST AID (SFA)Comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. Whether you need training for employment or simply want to be prepared to respond to life-threatening emergencies, this course will give you the skills and knowledge to act with confidence. Using practical activities and hands-on training, you will learn to recognize and treat injuries including head & spinal, soft tissue, facial, abdominal & chest, burns, bone & joint, and other common medical emergencies. B.O.A.T. EXAMIf you own or operate a boat you are probably already required to have a Pleasure Craft Operator (PCO) Card. All operators born after April 1, 1983, as well as anyone operating a power-driven pleasure craft under four metres (including PWCs), are presently required to have a PCO card while operating a boat. the exam-only option is available for boaters that wish to challenge the course. Each Fitness class at Strathcona Gardens is designed to include some or all of the following:

• Endurance - increases heart rate and breathing for extended periods of time, which improves heart, lung and circulatory system health. This has also been shown to prevent or delay some diseases.

• Strength - exercises help to build stronger bones and muscles for everyday activities.

• Balance - exercises help to prevent falls and improve abilities in awkward positions.

• Stretching - helps to keep the body limber and flexible.

Fluid Motion – these aquatic aerobic classes are conducted in shallow water, building endurance, strength and flexibility.

Deep H20 Motion – great cardio workout, toning muscles while avoiding impact, strengthens thighs, back and abdominal muscles. Must be comfortable in deep water. Belts are provided.

Adaptive Aquatic Programs – the following programs must have a physicians consent in order to participate.

Level#1 – this shallow water class is for people starting out in a gentle active program. Patrons that have difficulty with balance and walking or have physical limitations due to orthopedic surgeries will benefit.

Level#2 – these shallow water sessions are for people with limitations such as Arthritis, Parkinson’s, M.S., Heart/Stroke conditions, recovering from an injury or surgery (i.e. hip/knee replacement, chronic back pain etc.).

Level#3 – this deep-water class is for people with the conditions listed above, and are at a maintenance level, with regards to physical activity. A floatation belt is provided for added stability. It is optional to stay in chest deep water or move to the deep water when comfortable. Your face will not be submerged.

CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT 19yrs+This specialized program is a public recreation and health care partnership. The purpose is to help individuals maintain independence and functional conditioning through prevention and management of chronic conditions. This will include physical activity (aquatic/land based) and education. Clients with congestive heart failure, asthma, diabetes, high BP, chronic lung disease, depression, renal failure, liver disease and dementia would benefit. The program is divided into 4 (6 week) sections. The first 3 months is designed to get you on track and the second 3 months is a maintenance program which will assist you with tools for a complete lifestyle change. There are a variety of options and combinations of aquatic and land based exercise groups. Call Debra Wilson at 250.287.9234 ext. 236 to find the best fit for you. There will be an initial assessment, then monitoring throughout the six month program to assist with progression.

This twelve week program was developed in partnership with the Vancouver Island Health Authority. You will begin with an individual assessment and then receive an exercise prescription that is supervised twice a week by a Kinesiologist.

CHRONIC DISEASE MANAGEMENT & TAKE HEART PROGRAM GRADUATES 19yrs+This program is for participants that have completed the Chronic Disease Management Program (6 month) or the Take Heart Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (3 month) that want to continue with an exercise program. For CDM participants the classes will continue to focus on strength, functional movement, balance and flexibility, both in the water and in the Fitness Studio. For Take Heart participants the program will continue in the weight room. The monthly pass allows you to use the facility during all public times (at the discretion of the Kinesiologist). YOUTH wEIGHT ROOM TRAINING Ages 14+Are you 14 years or older and would you like to workout in the weight room independently? Take this educational three-hour program over two sessions, write a short exam and you'll be on your way to an individual exercise regime, you helped to design. Try a variety of equipment (i.e. balance board, athletic core pole, tubing or an exercise ball). Learn how to use your own body weight for strength.
