Dear Friends,

As I typed that salutation, I realized how very true it is. You are all “friends of the Dominicans” and so supportive in a myriad of ways. We are deeply grateful to each of you. As the old saying goes, “Everything changes except change itself.” This is especially true for the Dominicans of Houston at this moment in time. We elected a new leadership team at our Chapter meetings this past spring and set goals for the next six years All goals were created to advance our mission and the common good: we will attend to our financial future with diligence while continuing our efforts to attract women to the vowed life; we will support and encourage growth of the Dominican Family (lay committed women and men); and we will expand the Dominican Center for Spirituality and continue our sponsorship of St. Agnes Academy and St. Pius X High School. A further goal for our community is to deepen our personal and communal commitment to integrity of creation through prayer, study and action. We look forward to sharing with you our progress in meeting these goals.

As with many of you, we have had to face the present economic reality. For financial reasons, we most regrettably had to move our sisters who need skilled nursing care to St. Dominic’s Village from their home at the Villa. Though St. Dominic’s Village is not far geographically from the Villa, these sisters have faced much adjustment. Fortunately, many of our sisters visit them daily. The residents at St. Dominic’s Village truly love visits from all their friends and former students.

Yet with all these changes much remains the same. We have sisters serving in schools in Guatemala and Kenya, and we are blessed to administer St. Agnes and St. Pius. We serve in schools, parishes and colleges, and as campus ministers and community organizers. The Dominicans of Houston are committed to facing the future with the same pioneering spirit that brought us to Texas in 1882. In this time of economic confusion, we remain faithful to our mission of being “women preachers of justice,” and we are even more grateful to you our donors for your precious support.

Blessings on you and your family,

Carol Mayes, OPPrioress

Walk with me Lord...The process of walking leads the body and mind through a three phase process. As Sr. Helen Arnold wrote about the labyrinth, “The sacred circle of the labyrinth can symbolize Dominican spirituality, which transforms prayer and contemplation into action. The path inward is a time for contemplation. Once in the center we ask for insight, self-knowledge and guidance. The same path leads outward for compassionate action in the service of others.”

Walking the labyrinth can be a small retreat in the middle of a hectic world. It is a place to bring burdens and gradually let go. Individuals can walk the labyrinth as a time of quiet meditation. Groups take the walk as an exercise in awareness of being part of a greater whole.

“I bow when I enter the labyrinth. It is sacred space,” notes Sr. Deb Clark. “It is walking with God, just as Adam and Eve did in the Garden. Our walk is our longing to go back to Paradise.”

Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. “Our bodies hold all of our experiences. Much of our lives are held tightly deep in our gut. Walking the labyrinth leads us to unpack our brains and our gut – our deep feelings.”

The labyrinth pattern is found throughout human history, dating back to Greek mythology. Catholic labyrinths date back to the Chartres Cathedral, built around 1200 and home to one of the most famous labyrinths. In Houston, the Dominican sisters dedicated two Chartres design labyrinths, one outdoors at the Dominican Motherhouse and another portable indoor labyrinth. Both provide an opportunity for calm, reflective prayer through the deliberate process of walking. The notion of walking intentionally is one that Sr. Deb finds significant. “I can walk the labyrinth, reflect on my life and realize the mosquitoes are bothering me, and this is my life. On some days, I may struggle to get to the center, and this is my life. It is the ability to have a safe place to walk and deal with our feelings and allow them to come to the surface.”

Walking the labyrinth is not just any walk.

It is a walk focused on the journey rather than the destination. The form of the labyrinth is rooted in sacred geometry and draws on natural designs. Some think it looks like the two halves of the brain. Others think it resembles the digestive system of a person. Both analogies bring insight to the process of walking the labyrinth, notes Sr. Deb Clark, Doctor of Ministry in Spirituality on the Labyrinth and currently the Director of Liturgy and Music at St. Angela Merici parish in the

is full of requests. Her current ministry, along with the other sisters of the Dominican Villa, is to pray for the needs and requests of others. Sr. Veronica attends morning Mass and has scheduled afternoon prayer with the other sisters who gather to pray the Office, prescribed prayers that all Dominicans worldwide share. There are many opportunities to remember the prayer intentions of others during her day. “We have monthly intentions that

Sr. Leona Castle enjoys her prayer ministry in

her retirement. “I have my own schedule of prayer. I

are sent to us. We even have a list in the elevator of those who have requested prayers,” Sr. Veronica explained.

After a full life as an educator and later as a nurse caring for AIDS patients, Sr. Veronica firmly believes in the power of prayer. “In retirement, I have more time for prayer,” she said. Sr. Veronica shared that in her youth, she and her sisters had to walk or to catch a ride with a relative to Sunday Mass, often getting sweaty from the heat. “Today, I can sit in my room and pray, or I can go to the chapel. I just walk out the door and down the hall to get there – and can stay in the air conditioning! Thank the Lord!”

think that’s what most people do. I go to the Chapel in the morning. I say the Stations of the Cross, I say the rosary, I pray for all of the people who are suffering. And I pray for the ones who will die today.”

A retired educator, Sr. Leona worked in the Austin diocese for many years. “Until I was 81, I taught school. You get so absorbed in what you are doing. I didn’t know this kind of life.” Her retirement life has brought a new dimension to her ministry. “I was busy the first part of my life. I am perfectly content to be here by myself and pray by myself. I have talks with God.”

Sr. Leona continues to find ways to grow in her prayer life. “Now I have time to reflect and be still. I make my own schedule and I stay on it as close as I can. I have time now that I never had before.”

dominican author sees god in universe

Water, oil, and fire are basic elements of life and sacrament. In her new book, From the Beginning

to Baptism: Scientific and Sacred Stories of Water, Oil, and Fire, Linda Gibler OP, PhD, takes readers on a journey into the origins of the water, olive oil, and fire, to a deeper understanding of how these elements are central to our sacramental life.

Curious by nature and gifted in the synthesis of information into a strong story, Sr. Linda leads the reader through the story of creation to a present-day embrace of life and all that comprises our universe. She knows first hand that God is constantly working in our lives, forming us as well as the world around us. Her own personal experience of being reshaped through her changed knowledge of God led her from parish work in Houston to a challenging doctoral program in Philosophy and Religion. Sr. Linda is currently the Associate Academic Dean at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio.

For Sr. Linda, the change catalysts were images from the Hubble Space Telescope revealing the vastness of our universe. She also watched the series, Canticle to the Cosmos by Brian Swimme with her congregation. “Something opened up in me,” Sr. Linda said. “I realized that I no longer understood God the same way. It was not a crushing change or a crisis of faith, but an opening to something more beautiful than I could have imagined. You know the song ‘The Heavens are Telling the Glory of God’ – I realized it was actually true, and I became much more aware of the majesty of the divine by studying the universe.”

There is an urgency to Sr. Linda’s message as well. “We are living on a planet that reveals God to us, but its ability to image God is diminished by our behaviour. There is an urgency to protect and cherish our Earth. It is all vulnerable to our decisions.”

Sr. Linda will be in Houston to discuss her book and to sign copies at the Dominican Motherhouse, on Tuesday October 19 at 7:00 pm. Join us for an engaging evening with Sr. Linda Gibler!

Sr. Miriam Oliveros reports from Guatemala on all the school children’s activities. In July the children learned about water and forest conservation and recycling during Ecology Week. In August, 40 boys and girls in the third grade made their First Communion. During September the school children celebrated their Independence Day with a week of festivi-ties, which included displays of traditional food, crafts and textiles; gymnastics events with marimba music; and a parade with the school band. Also in September, the children cel-ebrated the Feast of San Vicente de Paul. Sr. Miriam writes that “In spite of all the crime, injustices, violence and poverty in our country, school is going well; our children are happy and trying their best with their studies.”

Last spring, Eleanor Cresap, OP and Ceil Roeger, OP at-tended the Partnership for Global Justice meeting in New York and participated in the activities of the International

Once again, middle school girls joined the Dominican Sisters of Houston for a week of summer camp at Circle Lake Retreat Center in Pinehurst, Texas. Thirty girls spent the week learning and enjoying archery, cooking, arts and crafts, canoeing and much more. Sr. Thomas Ann LaCour began the Dominican Girls’ Camp eight summers ago, and with the help of many of the sisters and lay friends, it continues to be a success.

Texas Roots of the Houston Dominicans. Highlights of the pilgrimage included viewing the site of the Galveston train depot where the first 20 Dominican Sisters arrived from Somerset, Ohio, in 1882, the site of the original Motherhouse on Post Office Street, Dominican High School, Holy Rosary Parish, the former site of St. Mary’s Orphanage, and the 61st Street cemetery where some of the Dominican sisters are buried. Pilgrims from St. Pius X High School also celebrated Mass at Holy Family School with presider Father John Bok, O.F.M., Pastor of Holy Family Parish, and afterwards enjoyed lunch and conversation with one another and Sr. Barbara Ann Cernosek, OP and other Dominican Sisters who live on the Island. “Our faculty and staff seemed to appreciate the day very much and spoke of being renewed and refreshed by this Pilgrimage” said Sr. Donna M. Pollard OP, Head of School. Of special note during retreat was the panoramic theatre presentation of The Great Storm by the Galveston Historical Society at the Harborside Theatre, docent presentations by fourth generation “BOI”er Linda McDonald, Director of Communications for the CCVI’s, and Patrick Spedale, Director of Campus Ministry at St. Pius X High School. The Island pilgrimage concluded with the pilgrims singing “Queen of the Waves” in commemoration of the The Great Storm of 1900.

Spirituality and the Dominican tradition of the Catholic Church underscore the learning environment at St. Agnes Academy. In June, St. Agnes sent a group of students to the Dominican Preaching Conference in Adrian, Michigan for the 12th consecutive year. At the conference,

students learned more about the Dominican charism and issues central to the Order. In the coming school year, the four students who attended the conference will develop programming about pro-life issues, establish a Bible study group, and work on further promoting the Dominican values throughout the St. Agnes community. At the start of school this past August, St. Agnes welcomed 865 students from 98 zip codes and 27 different countries of birth.

Knowledge of the Dominican way of life began for Mary Aquilina Moratto in September 1966 when she continued her Catholic education as a 9th grader at St. Pius X High School. In September of 1973, Mary married Thomas Moratto, nephew of Sr. Marie Therese Moratto OP. “Being a member of the Moratto family I found myself engaged with hands-on Dominican events – attending spaghetti dinners and liturgies, moving sisters from one city to another, and helping with the Dominican Sisters’ annual arts and craft sale.”Mary’s Dominican way of life continues today. She is a member of the first group of the Houston Dominican Family Leadership Team, and with family and friends, she celebrated

two years of study at the commitment ceremony and liturgy on May 2, 2010. Mary noted that “It was a privilege having the second Dominican Family group host and celebrate with us.”

“As a member of the Dominican Family Leadership Team, we gathered this past June to plan the third year of study for the newly committed family members. The year of study will be divided into the four pillars of prayer, study, community and preaching. Through our gifts of diversity, each Dominican family member will choose a pillar of interest on which to

focus and plan activities in support of the Dominican way of life in our community.”When asked how she plans to live the Dominican charism, Mary responded, “Strive to be an

excellent role model and live my life based on the four pillars surrounded by peace and justice and continue to enhance my spiritual life as I continue to embrace the Dominican Family mission statement. I am excited to join with others for a third year as together we commit to actively live and embody the Dominican charism.”

vocationsKelly Biddle began to hear God’s calling while doing research in a biology lab at Texas A&M University. She began thinking and praying about the possibility of a vocation as a sister while completing her PhD in molecular and environmental plant science at A&M. Kelly visited several orders in Houston and other cities, but one day, while waiting for the light to change at the intersection of Almeda and Holcombe, her attention was drawn to the large Dominican Sisters sign on the corner. Eventually, she visited with one of the Dominican sisters and began the process of discernment.

Today, Kelly is an associate with the sisters and works full time as a professor of biology at San Jacinto College. She continues her discernment process while living with the sisters and sharing their full life experience, including their commitment to community and personal prayer. “Four mornings and one evening we meet for prayer,” Kelly said. “There is a discipline to it. I am not a morning person! But we build off of each other. There is a consistency that is very good. Life is not just God and me. It has really expanded the depth of my prayer.”

Kelly appreciates the sense of community she has found living at Genesis House with the sisters. “I didn’t know how much I missed it after living alone. There are truly benefits to sharing a house. We share meals and we share prayer. Sometimes we enjoy watching baseball on TV.” Kelly concluded, “God has been opening the door slowly for me, in a way that didn’t overwhelm me. God knew what was best for me. Women need to know there is a rich and full life in service to God. It’s not the end – it is the beginning.”

Your loyal support of San Vicente de Paul School in Guatemala helps to enrich the lives of so many children. And finally, your generosity towards our retired sisters is deeply appreciated. Thank you for honoring them for their many, many years of service in the Houston-Galveston area and well beyond.

May God bless you, heal you and fill you with light.

Page 19: FALL 2010 - Dominican Sisters of Houston · contacting Sr. Carletta LaCour, OP, at xxxxxxx S r. Veronica Borski finds that retirement life is full of requests. Her current ministry,

Germaine Trahan, OP + (July 29, 1913 – May 4, 2010)

After graduating from St. Anthony High School in Beaumont, Sr. Germaine joined the Dominican Sisters. Her teaching ministry took her to Houston, Galveston, San Bernadino, California and back

to the Golden Triangle. Sister Germaine’s personality was such that she related to all ages, but she seemed to have had a special touch with the little ones. I have heard many say, “Sr. Germaine taught me in first grade. I will never forget her.” She was a people person. Along with her teaching, Sr. Germaine had time to develop and perfect her gift for calligraphy. Anyone who has a house blessing or an award that she calligraphied knows they have a masterpiece. Sr. Germaine was devoted to her family. For many years she cared for her parents in Beaumont and also ministered to the elderly in Port Arthur. Sister Germaine lived faithful to her commitment in religious life for 78 years. Until the end she thought of others and what they meant to her. Her smile and tactful teasing endeared her to all. ~ Annette Dworsky, OP

To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die. ~ Thomas Campbell

Marge Guadalupe Bollweg, OP + (October 26, 1920 – June 29, 2010)

Marge entered religious life late in life. She began to realize how important people and her relationship with them were, and she felt that she could be God’s instrument for the kingdom. She gave away

everything she didn’t need and in her black and white convertible headed back [from Chicago] to enter the convent of the Dominican Missionary Sisters, and transferred to the Houston Dominicans in 1969. It was while she was in Guatemala that she made her vows to both Kenosha Dominicans and Houston (typical Marge). Marge taught religious education, serving at St. Philip of Jesus parish, Immaculate Conception Church in Sealy, and Prince of Peace and Holy Name parishes in Houston. She came to the Villa in 1998 and finally succumbed to retirement in 2003. In my dealings with her I found a sensitivity for the oppressed, a deep compassion to accept others, a willingness to change the things she could and to accept the things she could not, and in the end to have the wisdom to know the difference. ~ Paula Enderle, OP

Our Mission

We, the Houston Dominican Sisters, publicly commit ourselves to study and address the crucial justice issues of our time. We assume the risks inherent in preaching and teaching the Gospel.

We will work to transform social structures which oppress the powerless, ministering with them in our common struggle to remain faithful to the Word of God. 1991

Members of the Dominican High School’s Preaching Teams from St.

Agnes Academy and St. Pius X High School made a presentation of Dominican

Life and the Four Pillars to the Dominican family formation group gathered at the Dominican Sisters

Motherhouse for their monthly meeting in April. The members also shared experiences and highlights of the National OP High

School Conference and their recent pilgrimage to Puerto Rico to visit

Colegio San Antonio, a sister Dominican School.
