Dear Friends,

Generous people give to see the impossible become possible. In the Gospel of

Matthew, we hear of a boy with a few loaves and fishes for his lunch. In Jesus’

hands, these scant items became food for 5,000. What a beautiful inspiration

to think of our gifts in this way and to realize their greater potential. Thank you

for your support, given in faith, and multiplied for the spiritual, educational and

charitable needs of people in Northeast Ohio.

In this Annual Report, you will read how your investment continues to impact

Catholic ministries in our Diocese and change the lives of people in our

community. Since my installation as Bishop of Cleveland in September 2017, I

have come to know the generous spirit and deep love for people shared throughout

this region. I am humbled to be your Shepherd and grateful for your commitment

to the good work of the Church.

Thank you to the Catholic Community Foundation, its board of directors, and the

faithful for your stewardship of God’s many gifts. Let us continue to work with

each other – and together with God – to see the potential of our own lives through

generous giving.

I remain,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Nelson J. Perez, D.D.

Bishop of Cleveland

One of the great joys in leading the Catholic Community Foundation Board is to be so close to the many stories behind the generous giving from the faithful of our Diocese. These gifts of all types are given in humility, with joyful hearts, and with the hope of impacting lives in a positive way.

In 2017, people of our Diocese entrusted $28.5 million to the Catholic Community Foundation to carry out their charitable intentions. Individuals and partner organizations provided more support than ever for Catholic Charities, Catholic Education, and Catholic Worship and Formation. Thank you to those who have been inspired by love and support the good and important works of the Church in Northeast Ohio.

Thank you to the staff of the Catholic Community Foundation and its board of directors for their

leadership in assuring that all funds raised are directed exactly as donors intend, and that accountability and transparency are paramount in those efforts.

Welcome and thank you to our new Shepherd, Bishop Nelson Perez, whose presence and inspiration has already made an impact on the Church in Northeast Ohio. Our Catholic community is strong and vibrant and will continue to come together under his leadership and with the generous spirit and commitment that defines our region.

Sincerely,

Tim Panzica Board Chair, Catholic Community Foundation

GIVING TO CATHOLIC EDUCATION CREATING MISSIONARY DISCIPLES.

supporting students with tuition assistance“Catholic schools, which always strive to join their work of education with the explicit proclamation of the Gospel, are a most valuable resource for the evangelization of the culture.” - Pope Francis, The Joy of the Gospel

In 2017, the Catholic Community Foundation disbursed more than $2.3 million to provide Diocesan Tuition Assistance to 3,091 students in Catholic schools throughout Northeast Ohio. Additionally, $108,587 in Emergency Assistance was provided to 69 students.

In supporting a family’s desire to educate their children in Catholic schools, you are providing the “Catholic school advantage,” the formation of the whole person into a missionary disciple.

The 111 Catholic grade schools and high schools serving nearly 42,000 students in the Diocese embody a spirit of joy, gratitude, and hope. These small faith communities are harbors of excellence where students receive a quality education, encounter the living Jesus, and are prepared to transform our world.

Amanda always knew she wanted to send her children to Catholic schools. “I enjoyed my experience in Catholic schools, and I wanted my kids to have the same experience,” she says. With five children, tuition is a concern for Amanda and her husband, Michael. When their oldest child, Dylan, was in kindergarten, the parents learned about tuition assistance.

“It makes a huge difference,” says Amanda, especially now that Dylan attends Elyria Catholic High School and two of his siblings, Jasef and Elaine, attend St. Jude

School in Elyria. In addition to a solid Catholic foundation, Amanda appreciates the individualized attention her children receive at school. “The teachers are so involved,” she says.

Amanda and Michael encourage other parents to look into tuition assistance. “Fill out the forms. You may qualify,” Amanda says. Through the tuition assistance program, more children are able to receive a quality Catholic education, she adds. “Without that help, students can’t get the opportunity their parents would love them to have.”

A DREAM COME TRUE FOR dylan, ELAINE and JASEF“Without tuition assistance, my children would not have this opportunity.” - Amanda

GIVING TO CATHOLIC WORSHIP AND FORMATION SPREADING THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL.

our sacramental future “I am deeply impressed with the vocation work that the Diocese has done; the engagements of priests on a parish level, the commitment of parishes. The work of God and the work of the Spirit here is strong. We need to pray for that and sustain that.” - Bishop Perez

Eight men were called to Holy Orders in May 2017 and ordained to the priesthood to serve the Diocese of Cleveland. Borromeo and Saint Mary Seminaries currently have over 75 men studying for the priesthood, embracing theological disciplines that deepen their personal faith and help them come to a greater understanding of the person of Christ.

Through the Catholic Community Foundation, your support of the seminaries has a meaningful and long-lasting impact on the future of the Church, preserving the sacramental life and treasures of our faith for generations to come.

In May 2017, along with seven other men, Anthony Simone was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Cleveland. Fr. Anthony Simone now serves as parochial vicar at St. Sebastian Parish in Akron.

Fr. Anthony began diving deeper into his faith after graduating from the University of Akron and while working in customer service at Sherwin-Williams. He eventually discerned a call to the priesthood and entered Saint Mary Seminary & Graduate School of Theology in Wickliffe.

Along with the theology and formation, what Fr. Anthony most appreciates about his time at Saint Mary is learning “how much I need God.” His involvements in ministries and mission trips were

also greatly impactful: teaching, working locally with hunger centers, RCIA, homeless shelters, and the disabled, as well as working abroad with the people of El Salvador and Tanzania. A love for people drew him to the priesthood in the first place; these seminary experiences further developed that love. “The seminary strengthened my gifts and my desire to serve.”

Fr. Simone truly enjoys his priestly responsibilities: “Confessions are my favorite because I don’t matter at all; God just uses me—it’s awesome. RCIA has been another favorite.”

“I’m busier than I’ve ever been, but it is in a very real, fulfilling way.”

FR. ANTHONY: JOYFULLY SERVING“The seminary expanded my heart and revealed where my passions are.”

GIVING TO CATHOLIC CHARITIES YOU DID IT FOR ME.

catholic charities 2017 annual appeal

“Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for the least among us, you did it for me.” – Matthew 25:40

More than 50,000 faithful donors across Northeast Ohio pledged $14.1 million to provide services and programs for the most vulnerable people in our region. This generous response represents the seventh straight year that the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal has surpassed its fundraising goal. Thank you to those who give to Catholic Charities, providing help and inspiring hope for our brothers and sisters in Christ who are the face of the suffering Jesus on earth.

More than 400,000 people turn to Catholic Charities each year for food and shelter, treatment for opioid addiction, a companion to accompany them through their final hours, or compassionate care for their child with disabilities. Catholic Charities proclaims the dignity of every person by providing help and inspiring hope for people in need, regardless of their background, race or creed.

In 1998, Kevin was released from the VA Hospital and came to Catholic Charities’ Matt Talbot for Recovering Men, where he entered residential treatment for overcoming addiction. “I wanted to stay sober,” explains Kevin, who completed 90 days and then moved into a sober-living home. Kevin continued to visit Matt Talbot every day: “God kept bringing me back.”

Kevin knew he wanted to give back and help others fighting addictions. In 2005, he was hired as a residential assistant at Matt Talbot and was promoted to senior residential assistant

in 2014. Recently, Kevin started a Heroin Anonymous recovery program that reaches out to addicts of this deadly drug. “God gave me this opportunity. Now I can help others see a better life.”

Matt Talbot for Men and Matt Talbot for Women offer intensive residential treatment for people fighting addiction. In 2016, Matt Talbot for Women expanded, opening a second treatment facility to meet the growing needs of the community.

GIVING TO BENEFIT ALL GOD’S CHILDREN ALLELUIA BALL LAUNCHES NEW INITIATIVE.

“We were looking for exactly what other parents are looking for. I just want my kiddo to meet her maximum potential,” says Camryn’s dad as he speaks about his daughter’s education.

Camryn, who was born with Down’s syndrome, attends St. Anselm School in Chesterland. “The school embraced her. What the other kids get is another form of diversity. They learn that ‘let’s not look at the disability, let’s look at the ability,’” says her dad.

“What better way to answer Jesus’ command to ‘Let the children come to me’ than to provide quality schools, grounded in Gospel values and evolving to meet the needs of today’s families,” says Bishop Perez.

The 2017 Alleluia Ball raised $974,546 to provide startup funding at both the diocesan level and individual school level so that the academic, social and spiritual needs of all God’s children can be met.

This bold, new initiative, named Better Together, is a systematic approach designed to increase the number of Catholic schools in our communities that are able to serve the needs of students who learn differently or face unique academic challenges. Forty-seven Catholic schools are part of a pilot program which is currently acquiring resources to launch in 2019.

View a short video of Camryn’s story at www.CatholicCommunity.org/Camryn.

On Tuesday, November 28, St. Vincent – St. Mary High School (VM) in Akron joined 174 other Catholic organizations and ministries throughout Northeast Ohio for #weGiveCatholic, Northeast Ohio’s online day of Catholic giving.

“We were all over Facebook and Twitter, on the phone until 9 o’clock at night, leveraging matching gifts, incentivizing teachers with a dress down day, and asking alumni to participate in class challenges,” says Gino D’Andrea, VM Director of Advancement. Their efforts paid off as St. Vincent-St. Mary raised $34,875 in one day to support their Annual Fund, which this year is being used to revitalize and repair classrooms that have not been updated since 1973.

For the second year in a row, #weGiveCatholic was celebrated by the Northeast Ohio Catholic community with a spirit of gratefulness and generosity. This 24-hour crowdfunding event elevated awareness for Catholic schools, parishes, ministries, Catholic Charities sites and programs, and other Catholic nonprofits that make a positive impact through the variety of programs and services they provide.

A total of $702,379, which included $60,000 in prize money, was raised from 4,860 donors for 175 participating organizations.

Thankful for all they’ve received, Tom and Elsa Pavlik, married now for 52 years, are in turn passing on a legacy of service and support. Their parents gave them a Catholic education and an example of charitable giving; Elsa’s parents emphasized: “To those who are given much, much is expected.”

Tom attended St. Edward High School and Elsa, St. Augustine Academy in Lakewood. Her school’s motto, “In all things, charity,” hit home for Elsa when visiting the DePaul Infant Home as a sophomore, leading her to later become “a professional volunteer.” Tom’s law practice flourished, allowing Elsa to stay home with their son and serve multiple organizations, including

35 years as a Catholic Charities board member.

Tom and Elsa are leaving another legacy through the Heritage Society, which recognizes people who have made provisions in their estate plans for the Church. “It’s important to leave something for the Church so that it can go on for generations to come,” says Elsa. One beneficiary will be their parish of 20 years, St. Christopher Church in Rocky River. They also remembered Catholic Charities and have left a designation “for the greatest need at the time,” says Elsa.

“Catholic Charities does so much good,” Tom adds. “Whatever we can do to help is well worth it.”

Members of the Heritage Society understand the importance of passing on the legacy of our Catholic faith to the next generation. By making plans for a bequest or other future gift to strengthen the ministries of the Diocese of Cleveland, these dedicated Catholics inspire others to help build God’s kingdom on earth. We gratefully recognize and honor the individuals who have included their parish or a diocesan ministry such as Catholic Charities, Catholic Education, or Priestly Formation in their estate plans.

“Carrie and I are motivated to support the work of the Church, knowing that this is what Christ asks us to do. We have been greatly blessed by God in both our personal and professional lives. All of our gifts, talents, and opportunities are given to us by God, passed from Him to us as the body of Christ in His Church. We believe that these gifts have been shared freely and feel a responsibility to share what has been generously provided to our family with others, especially people in need. The Catholic Community Foundation assists us in making an impact in the areas of greatest need in our community. This is a stewardship opportunity that cannot be ignored.”

As parishioners of St. Michael Parish in Independence, Tom and Carrie Kurtz are longtime supporters of the Church in Northeast Ohio and their local community.

tom and carrie kurtz“This is a stewardship opportunity that cannot be ignored.”

“In our mind, philanthropy is an extension of the beliefs we were raised with. We each grew up with parents that showed mercy and dignity, and stressed the need for community. We see the Church not as a building, but as a maternal family that helps to build community and a sense of well-being. One of the things that Catholic Charities does well is building a sense of community and fellowship – people to talk with and people to interact with. This is what gives purpose to life and a sense of positive worth that brings people back into community.”

Mike and Jennifer Saxon are members of Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Copley. They provide leadership support to the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal as well as other initiatives of the Diocese and Northeast Ohio.

GIVING WITH JOY AND GRATITUDE LOOKING FORWARD.

CELEBRATINGGod’s People Coming Together in Faith + Hope

Students from Metro Catholic School

Nearly 10 years ago, the Church of Northeast Ohio embarked on an historic campaign: Rooted in Faith – Forward in Hope. From kick-offs to pilot parishes, pledges to fulfillment, the faithful of the Diocese of Cleveland inspired by their pastors and priests responded in generosity to raise $170 million to support their parishes and serve the spiritual and corporal needs of the Church.

As the active phase of the campaign came to a conclusion in 2017, the Catholic Community Foundation created a publication to commemorate the tremendous success of Rooted in Faith – Forward in Hope. “Celebrating” features stories of impact – how the funds raised and distributed made a difference to both those who received, and those who gave. In early May 2018, this capstone publication was mailed in tandem with the Northeast Ohio Catholic magazine to every Catholic household in the Diocese of Cleveland. Congratulations! And, Celebrate!

ROOTED IN FAITH – FORWARD IN HOPECelebrating God’s People Coming Together in Faith + Hope

Giving in faithful philanthropy is to carry out Jesus’ mission on earth. We give to preserve the future of the Church. We give to meet injustice with service. We give to uplift the lives of people – many of whom we will never meet.

Because of you, the Catholic Community Foundation is positioned to provide great impact on the life of our community. As 2018 unfolds, we will continue to assist Bishop Perez in getting to know the Diocese of Cleveland and its benefactors. We see the Church in Northeast Ohio inspired by our new Shepherd and strengthened by faithful philanthropy.

At its heart, giving is a selfless act of love. We thank you for your partnership in this work and pray with joy and gratitude for all that you make possible.

Stay connected with us throughout the year online at www.CatholicCommunity.org and on Facebook and Twitter.
