Pastor’s Report to the Congregation Dear friends of Faith, In 2014 you reworked your mission statement. The statement was not radically different but it was more concise: “We are an inclusive and welcoming Christian community, faithfully committed to ministries of compassion, diversity, equality and social justice.” Under that mission, you created a vision. This vision has been among us for a year and a half. I just want to talk about these points in our mission from the standpoint of examples of things we’ve done and examples of things we could yet do together as I listen to you: To lovingly share the Good News of God’s grace and love in the name of Jesus Christ, and in the spirit of Christ's life and teachings; I’ve heard it said that “we are a big tent church with Jesus Christ as our centerpole.” I think that is a pretty good way to look at it. No, we don’t think Jesus is the only possible centerpole but that’s who we are as Christians. I heard a rabbi once say “you Christians should be Christian. Don’t try to be Jews or Muslims, we have that covered.” And so it is. We express ourselves, however imperfectly, with Christ as our model. I see it in the way we open our doors of our campus to groups such as Narcotics Anonymous, Women for Sobriety, Wildflower U-U, the AISD TeenParent program, the Filipino-American Christian Fellowship, and the organization Parents, Friends, and Family of Lesbians and Gays. I see it in our member’s involvement in our community. The good news of Matthew 25 is alive and well at Faith Presbyterian Church!

To nourish, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the spiritual needs of our members, neighbors in our diverse community, and the world around us; I think we have really worked at this one over the last year or two thanks in large part to Susan Sanders’ work with adult Sunday School and the work of Marty McDougal and Kathy Green with our children’s Sunday School. From Bible Study to Spiritual Practices all the way to book club and some of the newer worship experiences like foot/handwashing service, we saw some really engaging moments in our spiritual enrichment. I hope we can offer both a Bible study and issues class every week. I think we are ready for that. To communally provide a place of safe refuge and sanctuary for all ages, allowing for participation in diverse worship experiences, Christian education, and discipleship; There wasn’t too much of a place for kids in worship prior 2014. I think Anne Wingler has really helped us open up our worship service for our kids. This is something we hope to build on in the next year. No, we can’t be a multi-program church for children but we can be a place where children are welcomed and encouraged to be part of all we do and we are part of what they want to do.

To faithfully practice the pursuit of peace, social justice, and environmental stewardship in our world; For a small church, we sure do a lot. Yes, I know we don’t have a lot of programs and events on these topics but our members are highly involved in these pursuits. While I think we have dramatic involvements in peace and social justice, it is my hope that we can get more engaged in environmental stewardship. Please thank Melissa for single handedly starting up our recycling program. That’s a start. There’s a broad conversation about the environment happening all over Austin that I’ve let drop myself. I hope you will encourage me back into that conversation and perhaps join me as we try to participate in perhaps the defining crisis of our century. We have to be active in environmental justice if we hope to be a social justice church. To joyfully encourage full participation in the life of the Church by children and those of all ages, regardless of color, gender, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, physical or mental ability, race, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. You have the most progressive inclusion statement in all of Austin, I believe. And these aren’t just words. I think we are appreciated by those we wish to embrace. Like our culture, we have a lot of work to do around race and socioeconomic inclusion. I’m confident that if we put our minds to it, we can make inroads here as well. So, we are on the road laid out by our adopted mission statement yet we have more work to do to more fully embody what we proclaim here. Everything we do from budgets to signage to how we deal with each other on good and bad days should be a reflection of this mission. This will be my challenge to us during this year: To be these things but also to embody these things. So, let’s start here: What speaks to your passion in this mission and vision statement? How is God calling you in 2016 to help our church live authentically if imperfectly into this? In what ways will you plan “to be the change you want to see in our church…our city… the world”?

I’m grateful every day for who you are. I look forward to our journey ahead.

Inclusive. Inquiring. Imperfect.

Your pastor,

Kyle

Buildings and Resources Team

2015 Annual Report for February 21, 2016 Congregational Meeting

2015 BART members: Barbara Arctur (Treasurer); George Green (Asst Treasurer), Kevin Lungwitz (Chair), John Preston, Kathy Renfro, Todd Wingler. BART meets on the second Sunday of the month, after Sunday school, subject to change to accommodate members.

PURPOSE

The BART committee guides the church in financial matters; staffing; facility maintenance, care and repairs; technology - including phone, Internet, computers, and printing; and property management including landlord-tenant issues.

FINANCIALS

BART works with the church treasurer throughout the year, reviewing a monthly financial statement prepared by the treasurer. BART oversaw a mid-2015 capital campaign to fund the sanctuary renovation and retire debt. BART defers to the treasurer on the 2015 financial statement.

PROPERTY MANAGEMENT

CDC/AISD: BART oversaw AISD renewing the contract to lease our former Child Development Center (The Rutherford/Martin Building). The lease term runs from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016 at $1950 per month. We remain blessed that we continue to use the Rutherford/Martin building for the care of children – and parents - in need. We seek to nurture and increase our outreach to AISD and Travis High School through this program.

WILDFLOWER UUC (WF): WF is satisfied with its relatively new arrangements here and has requested a two-year contract. They pay $3150 per month in 2016, which will increase to $3300 in 2017. We are waiting to get the 2016-2017 contract signed by both churches. We negotiated a new space arrangement with WF in October 2014, giving them full access to the Multipurpose Meeting room and other spaces. This arrangement seems to have made FPC and WF happier campus mates, greatly minimizing campus conflicts. We continue to be very thankful for our partnership with WF.

FILIPINO PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH: Faith made its premises regularly available for Sunday worship and fellowship, and for regular business for this budding ministry.

OTHER: A variety of other non-profit groups use our facilities on a regular basis. (Yoga, NA, PFLAG, ESL group, etc.) We also adjusted our building use fees and donation suggestions for new outside groups.

STAFFING

BART employs a pastor, secretary, music director, pianist and two nursery attendants. We have a contract relationship with our custodian and handyman.

11

MAINTENANCE AND REPAIRS

The most significant project was the sanctuary renovation. We replaced most of the south (Oltorf) and west (Schrieber) sides of the sanctuary with Hardieplank. Those sides were double sheathed with to which a foam insulation barrier was added, significantly improving our R-value and mitigating external noises. All Hardieplank was painted. The remaining redwood was repaired and stained. The final cost for the project was $29,789. Our brief capital campaign raised in the neighborhood of $40,000 (the specific amount is in the 2015 financial report), thanks to the incredible generosity of this congregation. Excess amounts were used to pay down the 2015 deficit.

We continue to encourage all repair requests to be emailed to [email protected]. This allows us to track all requests and check them off, all in one neat tidy location. Emails may also be sent to the church secretary who will forward them to faithchurchrepairs@gmailcom.

There was a steady stream of minor repair and operational requests throughout the year, some of which are noted below:

• New AC fences were installed around sanctuary • Paper dumpster was removed from parking lot to free up spaces and because it was a

magnet for illegal dumping. FPC now has a recycling dumpster in the alley. • Various upgrades were made to the sanctuary sound system. • Battled squirrels and rodents in FH/Kitchen. • Recommended revised wedding policy to session • Recommended FPC credit card to session for e-purchases, etc. • Held two campus beautification days • Secured new groundskeeper, Raul Sierra, with increase to $300 per mowing. • Added water heater to FH kitchen. • Moved commercial refrigerator from MPB to FH kitchen. • Had carpet in sanctuary and parlor steam cleaned • Delivered trailer load of mulch to AISD playground • Repaired the big kid playground • Ran Wi-Fi Internet wiring to FH and sanctuary. • Upgraded office phones • Made improvements to alarm system to curtail false alarm charges • Approved new fruit trees planted in community garden area • Installed doorbell on exterior MPB door. • Repaired floor tiles in narthex • New toilet in MPB ladies room • Wrote thank you notes to all contributors to the sanctuary project

Faith Food Pantry Annual Report The year 2015 was an eventful year in terms of the Food Pantry.

• After almost 40 years running the Faith Food Pantry, Martha Loer handed over the reins of the pantry to Kathy Renfro. Martha continues to be assistant coordinator of the pantry. Martha not only served as the coordinator of the Faith Food Pantry, but started the Faith Food Pantries. Because of her efforts and vision, pantries dedicated to helping others are located all over our city.

• In April, the Pantry had to temporarily close its doors while a rodent infestation was taken care of. It took the summer months to get the pantry back up to speed.

• The Food Pantry Checking account began 2015 with a balance of $9576.89. We ended the 2015 year with a balance of $16,246.22. Donations equaled $10,839 and expenses totaled $4,169.67. Due to a large number of generous memorial gifts, the Pantry’s financials look much better. Our income surpassed our expenses.

• Donations came from a number of memorials including those for Keith Wright, Dot Hendrick, Johnny Shriver, Gene Smith, Ken Hammer, Neville Whitehurst, and MJ Clark. Other donations came from church members as well as organizations including Safeway/Randalls. The Weatherspoon Charitable Foundation donated $1670.00.

• The pantry did make some upgrades to its facility. Donations were made so that new shelving could be purchased and repairs could be made to the storage closets. Two new freezers were purchased with donated funds and the large industrial size refrigerator was moved from the multipurpose room kitchen to our kitchen.

• Because of the several weeks that our doors were closed, our food expenses were lower than last year. We paid CAFB a total of $1909.31. 1% of the money raised by Austin’s CROP Hunger Walk in 2015 went toward helping pay our bill to the CAFB. Other food expenses totaled $245. Our AT&T phone bill totaled $556.13 and other expenses totaled $1366.45. We spent $100 on a repair bill for one of the older freezers.

• The Food Pantry provided food for 745 adults and 706 children, for a total of 1451 persons in 509 households. This number was down due to the fact we closed for several weeks in the spring.

• We have added a couple of new agencies in the last few months. Any Baby Can and Rehab Without Walls have joined with us to provide services and food for the needy.

• The Faith Food Pantry could not work without our volunteers. Many of them have been with us for many years while some are new this year. Please tell them thank you for their dedication and hard work.

Treasurer’s Report

Faith Church had a great financial year in 2015. I am proud that our small congregation could fund a major sanctuary renovation as well as carry on normal operations without going into debt. Thank you for that!

I also owe a huge thanks to George Green who helped me transition into my role as treasurer and who continues to support me with his knowledge and advice. George also steps in for me whenever I am out of town. Thank you George!

Financial Operating Report

At the beginning of the year, we expected to end the year with a $28,040 net loss. Thanks to the generosity of our church family and the frugal spending by our session, we were able to limit our loss to $8,839 and were able to pay for it using the excess contributions made to the sanctuary renovation fund. The downside of needing to be so frugal is that we were unable to pay out about $5,000 of the budgeted benevolences and did not do the maintenance to the parking lot or make the upgrades to the parlor that we had hoped to do.

Special Gifts Report

As you will see in this report, our congregation has been extraordinarily generous, giving $53,180 to special offerings and causes. Thank you all for your outpouring of support!!!

2016 Budget

As we go into 2016, we are budgeting a $30,185 net loss.

This is primarily due to an expectation that our contributions will go down by almost $18,000. I believe this is realistic based on our current knowledge. We budgeted 96% of our actual pledges based on our giving history and lowered the non-pledge budget because some people moved from non-pledge to pledge.

Our expense budget only increased $4,437 with almost half of that going to external ministries. We based other expenses on our actual experience and did not include any raises.

15

Page 18: Faith Presbyterian Church Austin, Texasfiles.ctctcdn.com/a852390a301/12c4b977-c8c9-452d-8d7f-8a4dc2f3… · AISD TeenParent program, the Filipino-American Christian Fellowship, and

Concerns for the Future of the Church

Our practice over the last few years has been to approve a large deficit budget and then hope for the best. And as experience has shown, we do achieve much better than expected. In fact, 2013 would have ended with a $5,620 loss if the CDC had not had problems that prevented them from paying most of the shared costs for that year.

Year Budget Actual

2013 -22,398 -20,020

2014 -50,037 - 2,716

2015 -28,040 - 8,839

2016 -30,185

Nevertheless, we have had a cumulative net loss over the last three years totaling $31,576, have left some things undone, and have not been able to make significant salary increases for our staff. We covered $22,737 by drawing down our checkbook balance and $8,839 from our special sanctuary/deficit campaign.

At the end of 2015 we had $58,376 in cash balances that can be used for future operations. My concern is that if we realize our $30,185 projected loss for 2016, we will take our cash balance down to an unhealthy level and will not be able to sustain losses for more than one year beyond that. I have shared my concern with the session and they are on board with strategizing for the future.

Our congregation is so generous that I hesitate to raise my concern, but feel it is important to be transparent and open with you so that we can all work together for the on-going health of our church.

Sincerely,

Barbara Arctur, Treasurer
