These are the steps for building disciples. Build Relationships: - Meet people where they are, in coffee shops, in our community, our neighborhood, government, and schools. Our lives are transformed by participating in experiences not by observation. Our lives are changed when we act and engage. - Pay attention. Look around you, and see people. Interruptions become moments of ministry. - Get to know people as people, not as instruments. - Create intimate, close, honest, loving, trusting community within the teams you are involved with whether in worship or music ministry, classes, or committees. Equip, Teach, Train: - Build a pathway, guide, mentor, lead people in growth. Always lead people to the next thing. Growth is not about numbers it is about growing people. Invest in them by providing training, and model behavior. Set an example by being real, emotional, and honest. Provide experiences that are moving, connectional, and life changing. - Help people identify their gifts, then identify the right people for their leadership gifts. Do they love Jesus? Do they love people? Are they good communicators? Do they have the gift of hospitality? Empower: - When people have grown in their spiritual development. When they have built a relationship with God. Let them go and let them use their gifts. Let them lead singing or speaking, let them use their gifts. Delegate. Give everyone a part. Share responsibility. If there is a vacancy, show it. Let people know there is an open place waiting to be filled. - Healthy teams and leaders have joy have fun, celebrate, laugh and they have intensity focused on a mission, a purpose, the promise, the why. Learn and follow, teach and lead, then empower and let go. If this does not happen, the cycle is broken; we do not grow personally, and our neighbors do not grow. These are our missions: “The mission of the church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.” “Where your relationship with God will grow through Prayer and Praise, Study, and Service.” What we learned at the Leadership Institute is how to accomplish these missions. LI Learnings - Part 2 by Catherine Kavasch

I heard a common core message supported with a variety of specific examples in the sessions that I attended at the Leadership Institute (LI) held at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Kansas with Kolo and Aud-rey Liku, and Tracy Zapata September 27-29. The core message comes from Jesus’ life. Jesus learned and followed the example of his teachers, then he taught and was a role model, then he instructed his disciples to go and do what he had done. - Healthy teams and leaders have joy – have fun, celebrate, laugh and they have intensity – focused on a mission, a purpose, the promise, the why.

Our Shared Ministry

PART 2 - Behind the Scenes with Trustees: What We Do!

Our primary purpose is to enable the vision and ministry of the congregation. We do this in many ways. Good

stewardship, common sense and prudence dictate that the church, parsonage, facilities, property, equipment, fur-

nishings and other physical property be well maintained. This provides a more welcoming, safe, and hospitable

church image. In addition, we oversee the Trustee and other church investment resources.

Note: we encourage all church attendees and staff to help with our responsibilities by letting us knows

your concerns and issues that you notice.

Here is what your church Trustees manage to support the ministry:

Our Church facility at 1600 Bancroft has nearly 33,000 square feet of usable area that provides church services

in Sanctuary and Chapel. Also included are classrooms, offices, meeting rooms, Hale Hall, kitchens, and

Your Child Is Mine Preschool, Inc. (YCIM).

We have 16 others (examples; French African Church, AA type organizations, etc.) that use church facilities.

Our local church owns a parsonage in San Leandro that is 2400 square feet with 3 beds and 2 baths that is

presently rented. That income is presently used to pay housing allowance for our pastor.

We also manage the cash and investments assets held for Trustee oversite and designated Endowments and

Benevolence investments, such as church maintenance funds, Petree Education endowment, memorials

and music endowment.

Finally here are our valued Trustees: Lynn Vann, Chairman, Carolyn Keeney, Vice Chair, Rob Clark, Treasure,

Dennis Borruso, Treasurer, Dawn Teske, Aggie Smith, Kolo Liku, and Loranne Shoptaw.

Donna Fay Bower has been a quilter for 8 years. She joined the Amador Valley Quilters Guild

(AVQ) in 2012. As part of the guilds mission they distribute community quilts to nonprofits 3

times a year..All together the Guild produces over 800 quilts to fulfill their goals.

For instance, AVQ annually participates in ,“Quilting In the Garden” which was held in Septem-

ber in the Alden Lane Nursery in Livermore. At the event this year they raffled off a quilt and

raised $700.00 with the proceeds going to UMCOR.

Donna Fay and her group have reserved Hale Hall in November where their objective is to sort

400 quilts which will be donated to 15 nonprofits.! Spreading a little joy!
