The Faculty of Major Language Studies (FPBU) emphasizes the importance of possessing multidisciplinary knowledge and expertise and this vision is materialized in our degree programmes. The Faculty was established in 2004 with the first intake of Bachelor of Arabic Language and Communication in the academic session of 2005/2006.

The programme emphasizes the combination of two important subject matters; which are Arabic Language and Communication. We are also offering Bachelor of Education (Islamic education) programme that accentuates the combination of Islamic education and Education.

Here, teaching and learning are intertwined with the integration of Naqli (Revealed knowledge) and Aqli (Human knowledge) as well as extensive research in critical areas in language and education.

WHY STUDY AT FACULTY OF MAJOR LANGUAGE STUDIES

The Integration of Naqli and Aqli KnowledgeThe faculty aims to be the central reference centre in Asia as well as the world in terms of the integration of Naqli and Aqli in the development of language and education. Ultimately, the faculty aims to produce graduates and researchers who are knowledgeable, skilled and professional in the field of language studies that would contribute to the development of local, national and global citizens.

In addition, the expected language learning can be open to researches and educators to study research and disseminate relevant knowledge, thus allowing USIM to produce human

resources that are global, confident and competitive. Mastery of various languages enables students to study and learn the culture and civilization, and create a tolerant nation, dynamic, visionary and high-minded hopes and aspirations according to the government in making Malaysia a developed and competitive country.

Innovative Teachingand LearningFPBU focuses on courses and curricular activities that are relevant to the industry’s requirement. The faculty is dedicated to educating the next generation of leaders in Arabic and communication, as well as Islamic education and education. We utilize a student-centred learning approach with continuous updates on the quality and

relevancy of our curriculum. The faculty is committed to producing promising and excellent students with Islamic principles reflecting from the integration of Naqli and Aqli knowledge as stated in the university’s philosophy.

Novel Research AreaDynamic changes in the global and regional economy have taken place that has impacted the society in a massive way. Such changes are seen as the driver for faculty members to be innovative in teaching and learning activities as well as provide direction for researchable areas. Novel and invaluable research outcome are always emphasized by academics in fulfilling the national agenda of transforming Malaysia into the region’s Islamic Finance Hub.

Graduates in Bachelor of Arabic Language and Communication have wide career opportunities. One can work as academicians, researchers, language consultants, module writers and editors. Graduates can also venture into communication fields as reporters, customer service, copy editors; public relation officers and corporate communication executives. Graduates who wish to pursue postgraduate degree will have an option to continue studies in Arabic Language or Communication or a combination of both offered at the faculty.

Graduates in Bachelor of Education (Islamic education) have wide career opportunities. One can work as teachers, academicians, researchers, language consultants, curriculum designers, module writers and editors. Graduates who wish to pursue postgraduate degree will have an option to continue studies in Education or Islamic education or a combination of both.

Graduates of Master in Arabic and Communication prepares students for careers either in private or government sectors.

DEGREES AT A GLANCEUNDERGRADUATE

Bachelor of Arabic and Communication with (hons) Credit hours: 149Program lengths: 4 – 6 years

Bachelor of Education (Islamic education) with honours Credit hours: 138 Program length: 4 – 6 years

Bachelor of Arabic and Communication with honoursBachelor of Arabic Language and Communication is the first programme offered by Faculty of Major Language Studies. The curriculum is designed into three phases to ensure holistic that includes the learning of theories of subject matter as well as soft skills that develop the student graduate employability attributes.

Phase I (Generic courses)At the first stage of learning, students will learn generic subjects such as Ethnic Relations, Islamic and Asia Civilisations, Creative Thinking and Problem Solving as a basis for their studies and life in the modern society. In upholding the integration of Naqli and Aqli , students will take subjects such as Halaqah studies, Sirah Rasul, Introduction to Qiraat and Hafazan , Information and Communication Technology, Business Administration, Entrepreneurship and Research Methodology. Learning these subjects will assist the students to understand praxis through Islamic paradigms.

In the quest of ensuring graduates that possess multidisciplinary knowledge and expertise, students from the faculty have to

take six credits of the English language subjects. They also will have the options to take electives such as Mandarin and French.

Phase II (Arabic Language)The second phase focuses in strengthening the students’ knowledge in Arabic language. The faculty offers subjects such as Balaghah, Tatbiqat Sarfiyyah, Tatbiqat Nahwiyyah, Tadhawwuq Adabiy, Maajim wa Masadir Arabiyyah, Maharat al-Tarjamah, Aswat wa Lahajat Arabiyyah and Baht Ilmiy that would enhance the students’ Arabic language abilities.

Phase III (Communication)The third phase of the programme ensures students would have the expertise in another subject matter which is Communication areas. The faculty offers subjects such as Creative Media Writing, Principles of Journalism, Text Production, Intercultural Communication, Communication Laws, News and Feature Writing. Through this the students would have the opportunity to integrate their knowledge of the Arabic Language in practice.

Bachelor of Education (Islamic education) with honoursBachelor of Education (Islamic Education) with Honours is a programme planned by the Ministry of Education Malaysia and implemented by USIM in the year 2007. The curriculum is designed into three phases to ensure holistic that includes the learning of theories of subject matter as well as soft skills that develop the student graduate employability attributes.

FOR GCE ’A’ LEVEL / STPM/ STAM HOLDERS OR EQUIVALENT

FOR MATRICULATION/ DIPLOMA HOLDER OR EQUIVALENTS

A pass at the SPM/ GCE ‘O’ Level or equivalent with at least :

• STPM / STAM / GCE ‘A’ Level or equivalent and recognized by USIM Senate; and At least CGPA 2.00 or equivalent; or Jayyid and above or equivalent; and

• Credit in English Language subject at least at ’O’ Level degree; AND

• Fluent in English Language equivalent to MUET Band 2 and above; or IELTS Band 4.0 and above or obtained 510 score (PBT)/180 score (CBT)/64 score (IBT) and above in TOEFL or any equivalent tests proficiency recognized by USIM Senate; and

• A credit in Arabic Communication and Language / Higher Arabic Language or equivalents; and

• Credit in ONE (1) subject relating to Islamic Studies; and

• Credit in at least ONE (1) subject relating to the program applied (based on the special requirement of the program applied); and

• Financial statement / scholarship statement to USIM.

• Matriculation / Diploma Certificate or equivalent and recognized by USIM Senate; and

• At least 2.50 CGPA and above for Diploma graduate; or

The faculty offers subjects such as Pendidikan Tilawah al-Quran, Psikologi Bilazim, Pendidikan Kreatif, Rekabentuk dan Penghasilan Bahan Pengajaran, Psikologi Pendidikan, Sosiologi dalam Pendidikan, Teknologi dan Inovasi dalam Pendidikan dan Kurikulum dan Pedagogi Pendidikan Islam. Through these the students would have the opportunity to integrate their knowledge of the Islamic education in education.

GRADUATE PROGRAMMEThe faculty offers Masters in the areas of Arabic and communication, and PhD programmes in the areas of English language and Education, Educational Methodology, Teaching Arabic as a Second Language, Teaching English as a Second Language, Teaching of Arabic for Non-native Speakers, Testing, Measurement and Evaluation, Arabic Linguistic Studies, Educational Pedagogy, Educational Management, Al-Quran translation and transliteration, Arabic Morphology and Grammar, Pengajian Linguistik Arab, Arabic Rhetorics, Islamic Education, Technology in Islamic Education, Arabic Language, Arabic Phonetics and others.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE GRADUATE STUDIES

Master Degree• Suitable Bachelor’s degree with Honors

and CGPA greater or equal to 2.75 from USIM; or

• Suitable Bachelor’s degree with Honors CGPA greater or equal to 2.75 from another institution of higher learning recognized by the Senate; or

• Other qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor degree and relevant professional experience recognized by the Senate.

•Doctorate/Doctor of Philosophy Degree• Suitable Master’s degree with good grades

from USIM; or• Suitable Master’s degree with good grades

from another institution of higher learning recognised by the Senate; or

• Other qualifications equivalent to a Master degree and relevant professional experience that is recognised by the Senate; or

• Master degree candidates that are recommended by the Graduates Studies Committee to convert their study to Doctoral programme with the Senate’s approval.

We are proud of our 254 hectares university campus, which is strategically situated at Bandar Baru, Nilai, Negeri Sembilan approximately 20 minutes by car from the Kuala Lumpur international airport and 40 minutes’ drive to downtown Kuala Lumpur.

The USIM Chancellery building is one of the iconic landmarks of the University. This building is inspired by Islamic architectures, with onions-shaped dome as its most highlighted features. From the bird’s eye view, the building which consists of three building complexes forms the letter ‘U’ and facing towards the sacred house of the Kaaba in Mecca.
