Facts about May
The month of May was named for the Greek goddess Maia.
She was the goddess of fertility. The Romans had a similar
goddess named Bona Dea. They held the festival for Bona
Dea during the month of May. The Romans called the month
Maius. The name changed over the years. It was first called
May in the 1400s near the end of the Middle Ages.
Birthstone: Emerald
Flower: Lily of the Valley
Zodiac signs: Taurus and Gemini
Mental Health Awareness Month strives
to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental illnesses. Nearly
450 million people worldwide are currently living with a
mental health impairment, yet nearly two thirds of people with
a known mental illness never seek treatment. Nearly 1 in 5
American adults (44 million) will have a diagnosable mental
health condition - including Depression, Anxiety, PTSD &
Bipolar - in any given year.
Depression: Contrary to stereotypes about aging, depression is not a “normal” part of getting older. It is a medical
problem that affects many older adults and can often be successfully treated. A recent study from the American Journal
of Geriatric Psychiatry found that 27% of older adults assessed met the criteria for a diagnosis of major depression, and
31% had symptoms of depression that didn’t qualify as a diagnosable disorder, but significantly impacted their lives.
Anxiety: Anxiety is a common illness among older adults, affecting as many as 10-20% of the older population, though it
is often undiagnosed. Phobia—when an individual is fearful of certain things, places or events—is the most typical type
of anxiety. Untreated anxiety can lead to cognitive impairment, disability, poor physical health, and a poor quality of life.
PTSD: Seniors may be at a higher risk for developing PTSD following a
traumatic event or having symptoms re-emerge later in life, compared
to other groups of people in our society. Research suggests that there
is more compelling evidence that older people are at higher risk of
developing PTSD, specifically as a result of a fairly common occurrence
that affects one in three seniors over the age of 65 each year: falling.
Bipolar: 10% to 25% of all individuals over age 50 suffering from a
mood disorder are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. Additionally, due to
high rates of misdiagnosis, this is considered to be an underestimate.
In older populations, those diagnosed with bipolar disorder are twice
as likely to be women.

EXTENDED CLOSURE UPDATE
We hope you’re feeling safe, and taking care in this trying time. Like many of you,
we are closely following the news around COVID-19, both on a national level and
what it means for Central Indiana. Our priority continues to be focused on our
community’s future safety and health, and we continue to look for guidance from
our state and local leaders on when it would be best to reopen our center. Current
data indicates that Governor Holcomb will continue to implement social distancing
policies well into May, resulting in The Social of Greenwood remaining closed
throughout the month. While we hope to reopen by June, The Board of Directors
will remain proactive in monitoring the situation and will reopen The Social as soon
as it is safe to do so.
We understand that now, more than ever, people need connection, partnership,
hope, and community. Please do not hesitate to call The Social if you have ques-
tions, concerns, or if you are in need of assistance.
