FACIT: AN OVERVIEW

Page 2: FACIT UK LTD 36 Curlew Street London SE1 2ND United

WHAT IS FACIT?FACIT is an Architecture, Design and Construction company that has developed a new digital method for fabricating intricately designed buildings using computer controlled machines more commonly used in the manufacturing industry.

The ideas behind FACIT are simple ones: How can we design and make buildings better? How can we accuratley predict construction costs? How can we avoid abortive work? How can we make use of digital design information, like they do to make cars? Can we make the whole process of building quicker and easier for the customer?

The FACIT solution simple:

1) Design it all on computer (every last screw hole)2) Cut all the parts of the building using a computer controlled cutter.3) Assemble into lightweight blocks in the workshop that one or two people at most can pick up un aided.4) Assemble rapidly on site like big blocks of lego

Thats it!

The FACIT architectural team is lead by two of the UK’s leading young designers Nick Willson (architect) and Bruce Bell (designer and artist) who are highly experienced designers running their own studio Willson & Bell. The production design team is lead by Dominic McCausland who has huge knowledge of design, craft and manufacturing and has been running his own design and production company Wilder Creative. The business is managed by Andrew Goodeve who is also managing director of 3D Architectural specialists Glass Canvas.

WHY IS FACIT A GREAT IDEA?

The Use of Timber - one of the only truly sustainable building materials.

Exact costs - we know our system, and we now how much it costs, so the customer can find out early on.

Single Contract - much simpler for the customer than having lots of appointments with, builder, architect and engineer.

Accurate - the build quality is extremely high as the components are cut to engineering precision.

Lower costs - cheaper than traditional methods.

Less professional fees - as a design build service professional fees are lower

Bespoke service - everything is designed to the requirements of the customer.

Fast - the design and build process is much quicker that traditional methods

Workshop production - our workshop is compact with low overheads, which has a costsaving for the customer

No expensive cranes- building components are easily manoeuvrable

Digital templates - all the setting out for the building is produced by machine,

No mistakes - there are no paper drawings for a builder to ‘interpret’ incorrectly

Flexible design - The design is not constrained by a rigid module, it is no more expensive for every piece to be different.

BESPOKE DESIGNS

Crispin, Carly and Matilda’s Kitchen

The FACIT system can be utilised not only for the structure of a house but for other building types and interior fit-outs. Houses, kitchens, furniture, roof-top pods, garden studios, and commercial premises can all be designed and fabricated by FACIT to meet your requirements with flair.

SUPER SUSTAINABLEThe FACIT system has been designed to set a new standard for sustainable design:1. Insulated to twice current Part L of the building regulations.2. Improved air-tightness through design and control of all service penetrations.3. All materials specified to minimize environmental impact, e.g. Warmcell insulation,FSC certified plywood.4. Minimal wastage through the design of all cutting patterns.5. Reduced transportation with local fabrication.6. Grey water recycling system integrated into the environmental design.7. Heat recovery heating system, minimizes heating requirement.8. Solar water heating utilizes renewable energy resources.9. All the building services are integrated into the design allowing for future flexibility.

Q: Isn’t fire a big problem?A: No, its the same as any other timber frame building that need to meet the building regulations to prevent the spread of fire, which it does in a conventional manner using plasterboard, fire rated door etc where necessary.

Q: What about planning?A: FACIT provides planning services where necessary taking advantage of our experienced architects, to deal with the often difficult planning issues.

Q: What about building control?A: Our designs meet the all aspects of the building regulations, and applications are submitted to the relevant coun-cil for FACIT customers

Q: What material goes on the outside of the houses?A: This can depend on a number of things such as planning issues, however we prefer to design using materials that suit the building system such as treated timber or render. If necessary a brick skin could be used, however this isn’t very sustainable and goes against the concept of a fast easy build process.

Q: How is it supported?A: We use a structural graded Finnish spruce plywood for the main structure such as walls and floor, with addition support for long spans from Timber I joists, or steel if absolutely necessary. Naturally our engineer will make addi-tional calculations for each project to check loads and stability.

Q: How much does it cost? A: FThe cost of the timeber frame supply only is £250 per m of floor area. The total construction cost will depend on a number of factors such as location, fixtures and finishes. For a typical house, with a reduced professional fee, the cost saving will be around 20% compared to a traditional architect designed house of the same specification.

Q: Is it available now? A: Yes! We have been developing the project with funding from the London Development Agency over the last 3 years.

Q: How does it meet the Part L regulations?A: Yes, a typical FACIT house would exceed the regulations by about twice, due to it high insulation to structure ratio.

Q: Could i use this for a self build project? A: Absolutely, the process is ideal for a self build project as the blocks are easy to assemble.

Q: Do the walls all look like wood?A: No, generally the walls are plasterboarded, unless the client would prefer a timber finish. For more raw projects such as garden studios or if the client esepecially likes the natural look we use a clear fire rated paint.

4THE LDA FUNDING MARK

The items appearing on the next twopages are the only acceptable versions ofthe LDA funding mark (artwork files of thefunding mark are available on the disksincluded with these guidelines).

If you are in any doubt about the use ofour funding mark, please contact the LDA Communications Team.

TWO COLOUR WHITE BLOCK FUNDING MARK

This funding mark is the preferred option. It is shown here at the standard size(60mm x 38mm – measuring the width anddepth of the box). Wherever possible, thefunding mark should be used at this size on printed materials (for signage and otherapplications, please see following pages). It can be used on white (so the block itself won’tshow up), light or dark backgrounds.

Lettering: LDA green and blue(Pantone 375 and 539)

Background rectangle: white. Please note that thedotted keyline is not part of the funding mark.

TWO COLOUR BLUE BLOCK FUNDING MARK

This funding mark should only be used onwhite or light backgrounds where ‘standout’ is paramount, such as signage.

Lettering: white and LDA green (Pantone 375)

Background rectangle: LDA blue (Pantone 539)

WHITE-OUT FUNDING MARK WITH NOBACKGROUND BLOCK

In exceptional circumstances, where the blockversions of the mark may clash with thebackground or where you have not used eitherof the LDA Pantone colours or black within thedocument you are designing, a white-outversion of the funding mark may be used.

It is shown here at the standard size (55mm x30mm – measuring the width and depth of text).

Lettering: white

Background: variable depending on thedocument on which it is placed. The exampleabove shows a patterned background.

GREYSCALE WHITE BLOCK FUNDING MARK

Lettering: black and 50% tint of black

Background rectangle: white. Please note that thedotted keyline is not part of the funding mark.

GREYSCALE BLACK BLOCK FUNDING MARK

Lettering: white and 30% tint of black

Background rectangle: black
