On April 6th, 2009, a peaceful protest was called in Moldova in reaction to what some claimed
were fraudulent parliamentary elections that led to the reelection of the incument !ommunist
"arty. !haracteri#ed as a $flash mo,% the gathering on April 6th &uic'ly swelled to a large
protest on April (th with an estimated )0,000 participants. *he events gained international
attention as many +ournalists and technology pundits egan asserting that they were organi#ed
using the social networ'ing tool, *witter. eadlines included $Moldova-s *witter evolution,%
$"rotests in Moldova /plode, 1ith elp of *witter,% and $Moldovans *urn to *witter to
Organi#e "rotests.% ow central was *witter and other social networ'ing technologies to the
organi#ing of these events ow did participants perceive the events 1hat was the political
motivation ehind them1ithin this paper 3 will try to approach these &uestions aout the events of April, 2009 ut also
to situate them in the contet of Moldova-s comple history and identity the role of 3nternet
!ommunication *echnologies in a single event.

81hile only a fraction of the content, the tweets
from the three users in the appendi>( are
indicative of @pman on April (th. Many of the
original tweets come from evisoft, Moscovici,
and others that are in !hisinau ut not always in
the D *weets that are not
direct or secondhand reports appear to e coming from those with access to omanian television,
which, in contrast to Moldovan state television, covered the events in detail. Once pictures, video,
logposts, and 1e articles egan appearing, lin's to this content egan to ta'e up an increasing
ma+ority of tweets. As with any partially anonymous 3nternet discussion, delierate disinformation
and provocative commentary is also in evidence. For eample, user $gr% tweets:

response, and warnings over agitators in the streets. 3n later days, some dissenters appear in the
content maligning the protestors- actions, generating heated deate. *hough there are a few renewed
calls for moili#ations, the crowds never reappear to the degree they did on April 6th and (th9.
1hile it seems that *witter could not have played much of a role on the ground organi#ing, the

CONCLUSION
Moldova *witter revolution from 2009 demonstrates in a clear and comprehensive way the
political capacities of social networ's as *witter and Faceoo' if handled y profesionals.
As a result of April 2009 manifestations Moldovan "resident7 5ladimir 5oronin, leader of the
iggest governing party8 resigned and snap elections too' place, where proeuropean parties
too' ma+ority in "arliament and composed a new democratic ;overnment that engaged into
road reforms and vowed to integrate Moldova into /.
Jast ut not least 3* technologies ecome more and more sophisticated and important for
usiness, politics and other social spheres of life which can not e neglected.
