She is the daughter of Gloria Simpson and has most recently been the elementary librarian in Leavenworth, Kansas. Jonathan Miller and Shalee Myers were selected as Winter Homecoming King and Queen at the game on Friday night. Homecoming royalty also included Adam Smith and Courtney Nemechek, Stephen Houston and Haylie Greeson, crown bearer Corbin Bockwinkel and flower girl Payton Walk, Kaylie Schneider and Clay Robertson, Heather Harper and Troy Wineinger, and Michaela Blakley Tubbs and Elijah Stone. On November 2, 2010, voters in Greeley County USD #200 voted to approve the issuance of up to $4,810,000 in general obligation bonds for the updating and remodeling at the schools. The 10 th annual Walk Kansas Health and Fitness program is scheduled to begin Sunday, March 13 th . In this team-based program, you are challenged to walk the distance across Kansas, which is 423 miles, or 1200 miles, which is the perimeter of Kansas, or a minimum personal goal this spring. Evelyn Schneider will celebrate her February 21 st 80 th birthday with a reception February 20, hosted by her children and their spouses, and grandchildren. Poster winners for the Conservation District this year are Caela Ibarra, Maria Tovar and Arely Yanez. In the kindergarten coloring contest, Isaac Schneider, Julianna Tarango, and Karlyn Woelk were winners. Greeley County received some much needed snow this past week. The weather station reported a total of 6.2 inches of snow and .54 inches of precipitation at their Wednesday reading. This puts the year-to-date precipitation of 1.00 inches at .24 inches above normal of .76 inches. The Tribune Jackrabbits dominated their game with Wheatland/Grinnell, winning the Homecoming game 53-26. High scorers were Jonathan Miller, Stephen Houston, and Chaz Schneider. ++++ TWENTY YEARS AGO February 14, 2001 • Carrie McPhail, Cindy Barkdoll, Bobi Wegener, and Kevin Wineinger were winners in the Farm Bureau Check-out Day at Gooch’s Foods. Sheriff Brad Clark and Mike Lester answered questions from about 21 community members at a community informational meeting held February 7. Clark Harris celebrated his “Fifty and Still Nifty” birthday recently. Three Jackrabbits – David Arnold, Evan Firner and Jay Young – signed letters of intent to play football at Garden City Community College next year. Snowfall of 3.3 inches fell in Tribune February 8. County commissioners are Paul Shafer, Marj Hornbaker and Mike Thon. Kansas governor is Bill Graves. Mr. Gary DuPree is this week’s Notable in Town. Yvonne Folsom retired after working 23 years at the local bank. Tribune youth placing in the Knights of Columbus annual free throw contest were Kaman Schneider, Lindsay Wineinger, Ben Pierce, Henry Sloan, Megan Cavenee, Bronson Baber. ++++ THIRTY YEARS AGO February 13, 1991 • Max and Sharon Steele have donated a large post rock sign for the Horace Greeley Museum. The sign was erected Monday in front of the museum. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Cheney were named the 1990 Conservation award winners at the annual Soil Conservation Service district meeting Feb. 7. Troop 37 will be having their spring court of honor at the scout house on Sunday, Feb. 17. The following new boys will be joining the troop: Mark Kingsley, Adam Younger, Troy Riley, Sky Hoffman, Casey Young and Drew Thon, according to Scoutmaster Max Younger. Roena Helmbold, Audrey Hunter, Judy Young and Arlene Daniels represented Greeley county at the Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging meeting held Feb. 4. ++++ FORTY YEARS AGO Feb. 12, 1981 Mr. and Mrs. Walt Mintener and Betty were chosen as winners of the 1980 Soil Conservation Bankers award for Greeley County. Richard Vester, county key banker, made the award at the 32nd annual meeting of the Greeley County Conservation District meeting held Thursday in the 4-H building. About 60 persons braved the inclement weather Monday evening to hear Barbara Booker’s piano recital, at the Presbyterian Church. It was sponsored by the Tribune Progressive Club. Rodney Jones did his shopping uptown in Tribune Saturday morning, and was not present when his name was called at the PRIDE- sponsored community cash drawing Saturday afternoon. The amount in the drawing will be $100 this week Saturday. The World Day of Prayer is planned for Feb. 14, at the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Dale Johnson is chairman of the committee in charge of arrangements. ++++ FIFTY YEARS AGO Feb. 11, 1971 • Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Young and Mr. and Mrs. Owen Sleigh received the 1970 Banker’s Conservation awards at the 23rd annual meeting of the Greeley County Soil Conservation District held in the 4-H building. Paul E. Myers, Wayne Waggoner and Jess Mishler returned from Winnipeg, Canada, where they attended a new products show sales meeting at the Versatile Tractor factory. Alfred E. Nelson 72, a former Tribune resident, died Feb. 2 in a fire at Omaha at the home of their daughter, Alpha Burns, and her four children. A meeting of parents and some youth was held in the high school auditorium Monday evening, to consider the drug abuse problem, and possible ways to solve it. A large number were present, with Benton Stewart presiding. One man said he’d heard that all children should be given a dose of LSD (love, security, and discipline). Mr. and Mrs. Howard Huddleston, Jerry and Catherine and Mrs. Sarah Huddleston attended the graduation of 2nd Lt. James Huddleston, class 7105, at Webb AFB, Big Spring, TX, on Feb. 6. ++++ EIGHTY YEARS AGO Feb. 13, 1941 Harold W. Leffingwell. principal of the grade school, has resigned his position to accept employment with School Specialty Supply at Sauna. He will continue teaching here until Feb. 22. The Tribune Farm Bureau unit met Feb. 4 at the Mrs. Mable Tucker home. Nineteen members and two visitors were present. The unit voted to give their share of the County Federation fund to the library fund; also voted to send at least one delegate to the Mother’s camp next summer. The local YWCA and Girl Reserve Club have their plans made to observe Community Week Feb. 17-23. Mrs. Manford Kuttler taught for Mrs. Gweneth Linn Kiefer recently in Dist. 21, while Mrs. Kiefer had the flu. Mrs. Edna Moore reported that her mother, Mrs. Pyles, was improving in health. President Joyce Huddleston opened the meeting. After the flag salute the minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Committee Reports were read and reviewed. The treasurer’s report was given and approved. Sugar cookies and Valentines will be given to LTC residents for their “in-house” Valentine’s Day party on February 12. Donations for Auxiliary Cemetery markers are being accepted, if one would like to donate. We draped our charter for our members, Ethel Hetzel and Rita Rine, who have passed away recently. We are doing a fundraiser in time for St. Patrick’s Day, March 17 - we will be selling Sugar cookies in the shapes of Buddy Poppies and flowers. We will be selling them for $12.00/ dozen.
