Calcitriol, also called1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D , is the active form of vitamin D. It is involved 3in cell proliferation and differentiation and can affect some types of malignant cells. It appears to retard cell proliferation in tumors in animal models, and as such is being evaluated for anticancer potency in several human cancers. Calcitriol also stimulates a form of cell death called apoptosis. It suppresses inflammation and slows angiogenesis, which is the production of new blood vessels in tumor areas, and decreases risk of metastasis. Clinical trials for the use of vitamin D3 and other similar compounds are in progress.

Vitamin D has been recognized for some time for its role in bone development and most people are nominally familiar with the diseases of resulting from its deficiency like rickets and osteomalacia. Vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption from the intestine, and assists in the regulation of calcium and phosphorous balance. Food sources of vitamin D are limited (some fish, egg yolks, fortified cereals are a good sources) and the body can synthesize vitamin D in the skin from sunlight. QUESTION: Why are girls hitting puberty before 9?

ANSWER:

3

SOLUTION:

Here is a report on an BECRP program studying breast cancer, see the link to the picture for the original article in MSN healthy living, which is related toresearch conducted by some of our colleagues in the BCERP program.

They suggest that girls begin developing breasts around the age of 9 and those who were of more than median weight began sooner. Overall weight of young girls is greater than it was in the 1990s and according to Dr. Frank Biro, at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, this is another testiment to the fact that America has a high body-mass index. Their study was published in the journal Pediatrics in November 2013. Though body weight increase over the last two decades is important in determining when puberty will begin, there is some indication that this is not the only issue, and this led them to think of environmental factors, besides their daily intake of food, including encounters with chemicals in the environment. The link between early puberty and breast cancer is more or less indirect in its effect as an earlier onset of hormonal influences can be tied to long term health risks which not only include breast cancer but increased risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes in adulthood.

The solution might include 1) finding ways to improve our children's diet, (not necessarily meaning "more"of "less" but rather "different" foods, e.g. maybe eliminating cola altogehter, not switching to diet cola but or eliminating chips, not just reducing quantity or switching to chips with lower fat, transfats and salt, but chips altogether for . This benefit is doubled 1) it reduces the risk of disease and it increases health and lowers breast cancer risk. How many times can we be lucky enough to make a choice that not only mitigates weight problems, but benefits in amazing other ways? 2) it also brings economic pressures to bear on the companies that would, for profit, take away our good nutrition, beleager us with ill-health for the sake corporate profit. Bring personal resolve to the top of the list of activities that better our own health and the health of our children, and their children. The government can't/won't/shouldn't be asked to legislate this, it is our own personal task.

Butternut Squash soup

1.5 tbp unsalted butter1 Tbp olive oil

1 small onion, diced4 cups peeled diced butternut squash1 medium diced apple (any kind, peeling is optional)

1 medium carrot, diced4 3/4 cups chicken (or vegetable?) broth pepper for garnish

Serving size 4 (1.5 cups per serving)

In a medium pot over medium high heat, add olive oil and butter and stir until butter is completely melted.

Add diced onion and carrots. Stir for about one minute.Add diced apple and butternut squash and cook for about 3 minutes. Add in chicken broth and bring to a boil, then reduce heat. Continue boiling, uncovered, until the squash and apple are tender (approximately 25 minutes). Remove pot from heat. Transfer the vegetables with a slotted spoon into a food processor and puree in batches until it becomes smooth. If necessary, puree in several small batches. Leftover broth can be spooned into the puree until it is the consistency you like.

Serve in bowls and garnish with pepper and/ or sage. Pairs well with freshly toasted baguette. Enjoy.

The area just beneath the pale yellow skin of a butternut squash is loaded with nutrients and one of the best natural sources of vitamin A. Vitamin A is an antioxidant that exists in fruits and vegetables in the form of carotenoids. One of the common unoxygenated carotenoids is beta-carotene which is essential for vision and and may also reduce the risk of breast cancer in postmenopausal women(1).

A cup of butternut squash contains 745mg of vitamin A, 2.8g of dietary fiber and 3.1g of sugar(2). It is also low in sodium and does not contain cholesterol. In addition to vitamin A, this delicious winter squash also contains vitamin C, another antioxidant, essential to maintaining a healthy immune system. It is also rich in potassium. Give butternut squash a try and you will love it for life!

Fun fact: Butternut squash was once an essential part of certain Native American diets. It was so important that they buried butternut squash along with the dead to provide them nourishments on their final journey.

Several times recently, upon checking resources for this newsletter I have happened upon WebMD postings that really didnt mesh with the overwhelming mountain of scientific evidence and backing appear to

be, at best, a watered down statements. Instantly it occurred to me to check out the source of financial support for this large company (traded on the NYSE?) and it turned out to be Eli Lily. Anyone who has done research, collected data, knows unquestionably that bias is hard to avoid, thus, an unbiased relationship between a drug company and a news site seems far fetched . After checking on wikppedia I found this little note. " Allegations have been made that WebMD biases readers towards using drugs sold by their pharmaceutical sponsors in cases in which the drug is unnecessary. In February 2010, WebMD's financial relationship with drug maker Eli Lilly was investigated by Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa."

WORKOUTTIPs

Work with a buddy (joy and misery love company) A friend can inspire you to go forward and you can reciprocate

Set goals (both realistic and unrealistic) A goal that you may never reach is exhilarating but needs to carry with it smaller steps. Stretches and holding poses for slightly more each time can give one a sense of progress Journal your success (and your failures) Chronicle your workouts, the increase in duration of yoga poses, the number of workouts per week, the number of minutes spent in a works, measurements of progress with flexibility and strength, weight loss

Plan ahead (with flexible alternatives) Being willing to compromise, change plans, and adapt keeps one's spirit and enthusiasm for yoga alive and allows for release of anxiety when an workout gets put on the sidelines for other duties. But consider finding an alternative site, place, or quiet niche at a later time

Keep moving forward (allow for ups and downs) Record your progress over the months, as it is truly gratifying and inspirational, especially with your yoga buddies, to compare and encourage and inspire continued commitment to better physical health.
