uIllinoissoybeanfarmersparticipateinaU.S.DepartmentofAgriculturewaterwayprotectionprogramandaConservationReserveEnhancementProgram.Theseeffortsprotectwaterqualitybyremovingroughly132,000acresoffarmlandalongtheIllinoisRiver.
uIllinois’accesstothreemajorriversallowfarmerstodelivertheircropswithouthighenergycostsoralargeimpactonairquality.
uSince1988,theSustainableAgricultureResearchandEducation(SARE)programhashelpedadvancefarmingsystemsthatareprofitable,environmentallysoundandgoodforcommunities.
uIn2011,the“KeepitfortheCrop(KIC)by2025”nutrientstewardshipprogramwaslaunchedtocoordinateresearchtoreducenutrientlossesandenhancenutrientefficiency.
uDuringa20-yearperiod(1987-2007),energyuseperbushelofsoybeansdecreasedby65percentandcarbonemissionsperbusheldecreasedby38percent.
uIn2011,92percentofIllinois’soybeanacreswereplantedinherbicide-tolerantsoybeanswhichtranslatedintoreducedchemicalandfuelusage.

in each of five categories between 1987 and 2007.
Increasing yields have resulted in soybean land use per bushel decreasing by 26% during the past 20 years.

SupplyBiodiesel in Illinois
Illinoiswasoneofthefirststatestoaggressivelyfieldtestbiodieselfuel.In1990,100farmersandtenmasstransitdistrictsworkedwiththeIllinoisSoybeanAssociationtodemonstratethebenefitsofthissustainable,environmentallyfriendlyfuel.
uThestateofIllinoisforgivessalestaxonalldieselfuelthatcontainsmorethana10%blendofbiodiesel.Biodieselblendsbetween1%and10%receivea20%discountorcreditonfuelsalestax.
uSincethepassageofthesalestaxincentivein2003,Illinoisbiodieselproductioncapacityhasgrownfrom20milliongallonsto188milliongallons.Thesalestaxincentivewasrenewedin2011.
uIllinois’biodieselindustryhassupportednearly7,800jobsbetween2004and2010.
uTheIllinoisbiodieselindustrywasresponsiblefor$2.6billionofIllinoisGrossDomesticProductbetween2004and2010.

ly Illinois grows a consistent and reliable supply of soybeans.Formorethan50years,Illinoishasgrownandsuppliedincreasingquantitiesofsoybeanstomeetcustomers’needs.From1960through2011,thenumberofacresharvestedhasincreasedby78percentandinthesametimeperiod,productionhasmorethantripled.Throughcarefulproductionandadvancesinseeddevelopment,yieldshaveincreasedbymorethan80percent.

SoyIllinois: Providing historical protein and oil content of Illinois soybeans for more than a decade.ProteinandoilcontentareveryimportanttomanyofIllinois’soybeancustomers.Weunderstandhowthesecriticalcriteriainfluenceend-useresults.Eachyearsince2000,Illinoishasgatheredandreportedproteinandoilcontentofnearly600soybeanvarietiesinfiveregionsinthestate.TheresultsareorganizedandaccessiblethroughtheVarietalInformationProgramforSoybeans(VIPS),anonlinedatabasesponsoredbytheIllinoisSoybeanAssociationandsoybeancheckoff(www.vipsoybeans.org).

What is basis?
Commodity basisisamarketingcalculationthatindicatescurrentlocaldemand.Itisusedbyfarmersandagribusinessestodeterminewhethertosellacommodityinthelocalcashmarketorthefuturesmarket.
Basis = Cash Price - Futures Price Basisisthecommodity’scashpriceinthelocalmarketminusthefuturescontractprice.Thedifferenceisusuallypositivebutmaybenegativeifthemarketisexpectingashortcroporsuddenhugedemandfromaforeigncountry.
Apositivebasis(thecashpriceisgreaterthanthefuturesprice)indicatesthatlocaldemandexceedsthelocalsupply.Thegreaterthepositivebasis,themoreprofitableitwillbetosellinthelocalcashmarket.
Thecashmarketpriceandthereforethebasiswillvarybylocalebecauseoftransportationcosts.Buyers(elevators,forexample)whoarenearmajorwaterwaysandtransportationhubs–asinIllinois–willgenerallybeabletoofferhighercashpricestogrowers.

Every major railroad traverses through Illinois to connect the state to export markets in all directions.
Forty-three shuttle elevators in Illinois have enough soybean supply to load 60-110 unit trains to position soybeans for transfer onto ships for exports. Advances in making soybean meal meet customers’ demands
Soybeanmealhasahighconcentrationofproteinthatishighlydigestible.Theblendofaminoacidsareidealforswineandpoultry.
uBeginningwiththe2012crop,IllinoiswillbeginmeasuringaminoacidcontentforsoybeansandreportingtheresultsintheVarietalInformationProgramforSoybeans(VIPS).

Thesoybean(Glycine max)isanoilseed.Whole soybeanscanbemadeintosoy milkbystrainingsoybeansthathavebeenblendedandsoaked.Tofucomesfromfurtherprocessingofthesoymilkandtheadditionofkeyingredients.Tempeh, miso, natto, soy sauceandsoy nutsalsooriginatefromthewholesoybean.
Incommercialprocessing,soybeansarecleaned,cracked,dehulledandrolledintosoy flakes.Thisrupturestheoilcellsforefficientextractionthatseparatestheoilandmealcomponents.
Soybean oilisthemainingredientinfoodproductssuchasmargarinesandcookingoils.Oilisalsousedinindustrialproductssuchasplasticsandbiodieselfuel.Lecithin, extractedfromsoybeanoil,isanaturalemulsifierandlubricantthatisusedinpharmaceuticals,protectivecoatingsandmanyotherproducts.
Afterremovalofthesoybeanoil,theremainingflakescanbeprocessedintovariousediblesoyproteinproducts.Theflakescanalsobeusedtoproducesoybean mealforanimalfeeds.Defattedflakesarethebasisforavarietyofsoy protein products,includingsoy concentratesandsoy isolates.
Thesoybeanistheleadingnaturalsourceofdietaryfiber.Soybeanshaveeightessentialaminoacidsthatarenecessaryforhumannutritionandarenotproducednaturallyinthebody.
