Frequently asked questions...How do I start?

to take a course at dutchess community college, simply register. Read through this booklet and select the class or classes of your choice. then, select the method of registration that is easiest for you.

Do I have to take a test?

You will need to take a placement test if you are: registering for your first english or math course; declaring your major or selecting a certificate program; or if you have not earned your high school or equivalency diploma. for more information on placement testing, see page 36.

Should I declare a major?

it’s not required. however, you certainly can declare a major. see page 5 for a complete listing of degree and certificate programs. to make your selection, fill out an application for admission available in both the Registrar’s and admissions offices and at dutchess south. special note: You must declare a major if you anticipate receiving financial aid.

Will an advisor help me select classes?

Yes. advisors are available when you register in person or you may meet with them in the academic advising center.

How much does it cost to take classes?

a full listing of tuition and fees can be found on page 43. Make sure to ask about scholarships and financial aid.

Scan this QR code for a quick link to the part-time section of our website, or visitwww.sunydutchess.edu/admissions.

if you want to study part-time at dcc, you don’t need to apply for admission to register for your first classes. if you are undecided about what to study you can take a class or two, see how you like the college atmosphere, decide on a degree program, and then apply when you are more comfortable with a particular area of study. if you would like to speak with an advisor before enrolling in your first course, come to speak to an advisor at registration.

almost half of the students at dcc attend classes part-time, which means that they take 11 credits or fewer. Many of our students have other responsibilities, such as work and family, and therefore cannot attend college full-time.

our class schedules are organized to help part-time students fit education into their lives. students who wish to take courses but who have not yet decided to enroll in a specific curriculum simply register for their desired courses, assuming they meet the course prerequisites, if applicable. (such students are technically designated non-matriculated.) college advisors are available at all registrations to advise all non-matriculated, part-time students.

once enrolled, a part-time student is given the opportunity to preregister early for courses in the next college term. enrolled students are notified through their e-mail account and Mydcc about early registration. Part-time students desiring to become candidates for degrees in specific programs (desiring to matriculate) should contact the Registrar’s office at 431-8020 or apply for admission through www.sunydutchess.edu.

if you would like to attend dcc as a full-time student, simply call the admissions office at 431-8010.

Architectural technologyArchitecture is the imaginative blend of art and science in the design of environments for people. People need places to eat, work, live and play. The Architecture program prepares graduates to become draftspersons, engineering aides, building materials and manufacturing representatives, planning aides, and for many other professions within the field. Placement Testing dcc utilizes coMPass and asset placement tests to determine a student’s proficiency in writing, Reading, and/or Math. course placement is determined by appropriate scores on these required placement tests. students who have english as a second language should request to take an additional placement test for writing. Placement testing is also provided for students enrolling in spanish courses and for the anatomy and Physiology course sequence (biology 030, 130, 131) necessary for the nursing Program. You must obtain a Placement test Referral form from either the admissions or Registrar's office prior to testing.

Placement testing is required if:

• You have a high school diploma or an equivalency (Ged), and you are enrolling for the first time, as a full-time student.

• You do not have a high school diploma or an equivalency (Ged), and you wish to enroll as a full-time or part-time student requesting financial aid.

• You are a current part-time dcc student, and you wish to matriculate (declare a major area of study).

• You are enrolling in your first english or Math class at dcc. You will need to take the appropriate portion of either coMPass or asset. for some students who have english as a second language, the Michigan test of english as a second language may be required.

• You are transferring to dcc from another college; an evaluation of your transcript will determine the need for placement testing.

However, if you want to take just one or two courses for personal enrichment or intellectual curiosity, no placement test is needed.

You can find information about placement testing including sample placement test questions at http://www.sunydutchess.edu/academics/academic_services/. Please call the office of Academic Services and Testing if you need more information, 431-8090.

New Directionsnew directions at dcc is for those who have been out of school for a number of years and wish to take advantage of orientation, advisement, and other support services designed especially for them. all adult students, full- or part-time are eligible to participate in new directions.

the decision to return to formal education is a monumental one for most adult students. and, along with the excitement of taking that first step, come real concerns. Many returning students ask themselves the same questions:

• will i be able to compete with younger students?

• will i be able to juggle coming to class, studying, work, and family responsibilities?

• will i be the oldest person in the class?

You will have to make some adjustments to your schedule of course, but the benefits of fulfilling your dream of going to college will far outweigh any challenges that come your way. class schedules are flexible, allowing you to take just one or two courses a semester, if you wish.

new directions advisors will assist you with enrollment, course selection, schedules, study skills, and educational planning. they continue to provide advisement to you until you graduate.

General Informationthe information that follows is provided as an overview. see the college catalog for full policies and procedures.

Academic Advisementdcc is dedicated to each student’s success, and offers a number of services designed to help you. dcc provides students with assistance on matters ranging from class choices to curriculum selection, academic counseling, and much more. Part-time students are encouraged to begin their registration process by visiting the academic advising center. for information call 431-8020.

AuditingGenerally, dcc credit students enroll and complete classes to earn a grade that is figured into their cumulative average. however, there are other methods of learning available. students can “audit” a class — take the course for a grade of “u,” and earn no college credit. the student simply needs to register for audit status on the first day of the semester, august 29, 2011 at the Registrar’s office. if a student decides to audit a class, that status cannot normally be changed after the third week of the class. all normal tuition and fee charges still apply.

Automobile Registration and Parkingall vehicles that are driven and parked on campus must be registered. to register your vehicle(s) at the campus security office, you will need to know the license plate number, year and make of your car and to show your dcc sunY id card. Permits are valid for the life of your vehicle. Parking permits issued allow parking for students in lots d and e and for faculty/staff in lots a, b, c, d, and e.the security office is in the student services center, Room 114.

Course Cancellationalthough dcc makes every effort to plan course offerings appropriately, sometimes it is necessary to cancel a class before its scheduled start. students will be notified immediately by mail. if a student does not choose a replacement course, a refund will be made. Refunds will usually be sent to the student approximately 30 days after the start of classes.

DCC Tuition Reimbursement Deferred Payment Programstudents eligible for tuition reimbursement by their employer may apply to have their tuition deferred. the deferred Payment application form, completed by the employee and employer, should be submitted at the time of registration. the forms can be obtained from the office of student accounts, at dutchess south, and online at www.sunydutchess.edu. upon receipt of a final course grade, the student must submit the grade and a company reimbursement form to the employer. Payment is required within 30 days from the day grades are available. when the employer reimburses the student, it becomes the student’s responsibility to pay dcc in full. if the student withdraws or fails to qualify for their employer’s tuition reimbursement program, the student is responsible for paying dcc in full.

Directory Information/Release of InformationPersonally identifiable information generally is not given out without the student’s written authorization unless it is directory information. directory information may consist of name, city or town, dates of attendance, date of graduation, degree and enrollment status. if a student does not wish directory information to be released, he/she must submit a written request to the office of the Registrar before the beginning of each semester. Early Admissions Programone of the unique components of the dcc campus is the diversity of the student population. our students have a wide range of age and experience. Most enroll at dcc as high school graduates, or as holders of a new York state General equivalency diploma. however, currently enrolled high school students, generally those who have completed 10th grade, may want to consider dcc’s early admissions Program. students must be at least 16 years of age in order to be eligible, and the program does require permission of, and coordination with appropriate personnel at the student’s high school. the courses taken at dcc will earn college credit, and in some cases, can also fulfill high school requirements. the procedures for early admission to dcc can be explained by the dcc admissions office staff, the Registrar’s staff, or by your high school guidance counselor.

MatriculationMany students enroll at dcc without having decided on a curriculum or specific degree program. these students may choose to take several classes without a specific, or declared, program of study. however, in order to become a candidate for graduation and to qualify for financial aid, a student must be “matriculated” — meaning that a degree program has been declared. Matriculated students are given preference for enrollment in classes that are in keeping with their chosen curriculum. (to matriculate simply fill out an application for admission available in the admissions office, the Registrar’s office or at dcc south or online at www.sunydutchess.edu.

Proficiency Examsstudents may earn dcc credit for most required courses by taking proficiency exams. exams are given two times each semester according to a schedule which is available in the Registrar’s office. the cost for each exam is $45. the Registrar’s office can provide more information and explain the procedures associated with proficiency exams. dcc is a test site for the college board’s college level examination Program (cleP).

Student I.D. Cardsthe college provides each student with an id card at no cost, but a replacement due to loss or theft will carry a fee. the id cards are issued during registration periods along with parking permits and can also be obtained at the security office, orcutt student services center, Room 114. call 431-8070 for information, days and times. the card includes a photo of the holder and a bar code for use in the dcc library when borrowing books and for debiteK. a student id card also is used for equipment sign-out, fitness center, instructional media equipment, and student activities events.

School Closing Due To Inclement Weatherwinter in the hudson valley can offer many weather-related surprises! weather conditions may, at times, necessitate the early closure of the campus, or a delay in the start of classes. announcement of class delays or cancellations will be made by 6:30 a.m. for day classes, and 4 p.m. for evening classes (those that begin after 4:30 p.m.). students should listen to local radio during inclement weather — cancellation notice will be given by nY-aleRt, a service of the new York state emergency Management office or over the radio. stations carrying notices are in beacon, brewster, highland, Kingston, Millerton, newburgh, Peekskill, Poughkeepsie and sharon, ct. notification will be given several

times each hour on local radio. normally, weather-related class cancellations on the main campus also apply to off-campus sites. Remember: cancellation of day classes does not automatically extend to evening programs. students can also check the college web page for class cancellation notices or call the dcc Recorded information line at 431-8001.
