eptsgg Dear friends, As we leave the Book of Genesis in our weekly Torah reading and begin Exodus, we shift from the personal and familial stories of the patriarchs to the national story of the people of Israel. As Torah scholar Gunther Plaut notes, the focus of the story turns “from the level of biography to that of history.” “Exodus,” he writes, “includes the common experience of the Egyptian oppression, the dramatic escape from…the pursuing Egyptians, the first wandering in Sinai, and the collective assent there to a code of law – in short, all the constitutive elements of Israel’s emergence into a nationhood (emphasis added).” Yet, despite Plaut’s observation, we know the “common” and “collective” experiences of our people began earlier, within those personal stories of Genesis. It was articulated by Joseph when he foretold the slavery and liberation of the people and commented to his bewildered brothers, “God has sent me ahead of you…to save your lives in an extraordinary deliverance” (Genesis 45:7). Earlier than that a national theme was struck when God told Jacob, “A nation, yea, an assembly of nations, shall descend from you. …The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I give to you and to your offspring” (Genesis 35:11- 12). Two generations prior, God articulated a “common experience” in the first divine address to Abraham. “I will make of you a great nation. And I will bless you. … And all the families of the earth shall bless themselves by you” (Genesis 12:2-3). Yes, we understand Plaut’s point; the foundation stones for nation-building are set in Exodus, namely repression, redemption, and revelation. But the nation already existed – albeit in a more latent form – within the lives and families of the patriarchs and matriarchs. In those personal stories, the Israelite nation came to be. We ought to see our own lives through that prism. Our lives are the latent expression of the people Israel. We may understand ourselves as isolated worlds, distinct and independent from a larger story. But, in fact, within our lives we express and continue the destiny of the Jewish people. That national destiny largely depends on our own conduct and on what we believe. When we embrace our Jewish folkways, we enhance the collective. Each time we light Shabbat candles; each time we utter a traditional blessing; each time we celebrate a simcha in a Jewish way; and each time we perform an act of tikkun, repair, of our world, we are engaging in the common Jewish experience and building up our nation. And then, with the Jewish people thus strengthened by our dedicated Jewish lives, we will truly fulfill our grand- national destiny to bring blessings not merely to our families, but to all the families of the earth. Dear friends,

As we leave the Book of Genesis in our weekly Torah reading and begin Exodus, we shift from the personal and familial stories of the patriarchs to the national story of the people of Israel.

As Torah scholar Gunther Plaut notes, the focus of the story turns “from the level of biography to that of history.” “Exodus,” he writes, “includes the common experience of the Egyptian oppression, the dramatic escape from…the pursuing Egyptians, the first wandering in Sinai, and the collective assent there to a code of law – in short, all the constitutive elements of Israel’s emergence into a nationhood (emphasis added).”

Yet, despite Plaut’s observation, we know the “common” and “collective” experiences of our people began earlier, within those personal stories of Genesis.

…The land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac I give to you and to your offspring” (Genesis 35:11-12).

And then, with the Jewish people thus strengthened by our dedicated Jewish lives, we will truly fulfill our grand-national destiny to bring blessings not merely to our families, but to all the families of the earth.

In Loving Memory

If you wish to honor the memory of a dear one, a most fitting, traditional and dignified

remembrance is through a memorial plaque. Each memorial plaque, bearing the name and

yahrzeit date, is mounted in the Memorial Alcove in our chapel.

On the day of the yahrzeit, your loved one’s name

is listed on a tablet in the chapel alcove. For more information or to order a plaque, contact Bill Gerber in the synagogue office.

HERE’S A GREAT WAY TO HELP THE SYNAGOGUE AND IT’S SO EASY!!

If you shop at Jewel, purchase our $100 Jewel gift cards. You get full value and the synagogue gets money back for each card sold. Jewel gift cards can be acquired from Jeanette Sigler in the synagogue office.

EHNTJC offers heartfelt condolences to…

Sandi Cowen on the loss of her uncle and Rachel Cowen on the loss of her

Great-uncle, Mark Greenberg.

Adie Fuchs on the loss of her significant other, Ron Salsburg.

Cy (Sally) Jablo on the loss of his brother

and Brian (Anelyn) Jablo on the loss of his uncle, Steven Jablo.

Rudolph (Sherrine) Zaransky on the loss of

his sister-in-law, Roseland Zaransky.

The family of Howard Shimkovitz.

May G-d comfort them among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Share Your Joy! Dedicate a leaf on the Tree of Life sculpture

in the synagogue lobby.

Celebrate your happy events. Call Bill Gerber in the office.

We Had a Great Year!!

I am pleased to report to you that our Ways & Means projects were very successful this year!!

At this time I want to thank you, our members, for all you did to help us raise the much needed funds for our wonderful congregation.

We planned 5 projects this year. They were: our Purim Shpiel, "Bye, Bye, Haman", the Ad Book "Women of Valor", the Cantor's Concert "Songs from the Heart", the Honey Sale, and "Blacklisted: The Musical". In total we raised $68,065.61.

Although we did very well this year, there is always room for improvement. We depend on our members to support our activities and to encourage their friends and family to participate too.

I look forward to another successful year. Ken Dermer is already working on next year’s Purim Shpiel. The Ways & Means committee will be planning some exciting projects. Your continued support would be very much appreciated. We all care about and love our synagogue!!!

I hope you all have a wonderful and peaceful New Year!!! Ada Sutker Rabinowitz, Ways & Means Chair
